You Can Now Check Which Games From Your Steam Library Are Compatible With the Steam Deck

Valve has released a new tool that will let you see exactly which games from your Steam Library will be compatible with the Steam Deck.

Those interested in seeing which games Valve’s upcoming handheld gaming PC will be able to run can head over to the Steam Deck Compatibility page and log in with their Steam account to see if their Steam Library games are Deck Verified, Deck Playable, Unsupported, or Untested.

Deck Verified games will be “fully functional” right out of the box, Deck Playable games will work but “might require extra effort to interact with or configure,” Unsupported means a game is currently not functional on Steam Deck, and Untested means Valve simply hasn’t checked the game for compatibility yet.

As an example, the games in my Steam Library that are Deck Verified are Vampire Survivors, Stick Fight, Disco Elysium, Half-Life 2, The Messenger, Return of the Obra Dinn, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Stardew Valley, Portal 2, Sonic Generations, Super Meat Boy, FTL, and Left 4 Dead 2.

My Deck Playable games include The Forest, Among Us, Before Your Eyes, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Final Fantasy VII, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Civilization VI, Valheim, 7 Days to Die, Loop Hero, Path of Exile, Kerbal Space Program, Pillars of Eternity, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, Antichamber, Don’t Starve Together, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, and Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection.

My Unsupported games are Lost Ark, Duck Game, New World, Half-Life: Alyx, Scavengers, and Bright Memory: Infinite. Lastly, I currently have 78 untested games in my Steam Library.

Valve notes that the Steam Deck review team is “testing more games every day, working our way through the Steam catalog.”

The Steam Deck will be released on February 25, and you can check out everything you need to know about Valve’s upcoming handheld gaming PC with our Steam Deck explainer.

Horizon Forbidden West is $10 cheaper on PS4, still PS5 compatible

Those who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will get access to a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version of the game, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said in September. As such, it appears that the PS4 version of the game is secretly the cheapest way to buy it, since the PS5 version costs $10 more.

One big caveat, of course, is that we only have the CEO’s words to go on. Meanwhile, the descriptions of the two versions of the game on Sony’s own storefront are a bit confusing. Sony is offering a PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West for $59.99, while the one listed for PS5 costs $69.99. Both products indicate that they are compatible with both platforms.

By pre-ordering the PS4 version — available by scrolling down to the pre-order boxes lower on the page — you’ll be able to access the PS5 upgrade, per Ryan’s promise last year. As The Verge points out, the listing on Sony’s website mentions that version working only on PS4, but a bullet point above the box implies that it works on the new console, too. This could mean that the PS4 version of the game will work on PS5 consoles in backward compatibility mode — i.e., not the PS5-upgraded and -optimized experience. This confusion extends to the information on Horizon Forbidden West’s FAQ page, which still says that “dual entitlement does not apply to the Standard and Special Editions,” where the phrase “dual entitlement” refers to buyers being able to access both the PS4 and PS5 versions. We’ve reached out to Sony for clarification.

Another curious issue: You’ll have to buy the digital version of this game on the Sony website or through the PlayStation app; it isn’t visible on the PS5’s own digital storefront, according to The Verge.

Sony’s whole approach to its upgrade paths for Horizon Forbidden West has been confusing. In September, Sony announced there was no upgrade path from PS4 to PS5, despite suggesting these would always be free. Days later, the company reversed course and decided that it could, after all, give players the upgrade for free. Future games, though — including March’s Gran Turismo 7 — will still have the $10 upgrade fee.

Apple Watch Series 7 to Come in 41mm and 45mm Case Sizes, Will Be Compatible With Older Bands

Apple hasn’t released full details on the Apple Watch Series 7 as of yet because it’s not set to launch until later this fall, but the new Apple Watch bands that came out today confirm that the Series 7 will be available in 41mm and 45mm sizes.

The 41mm ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌ replaces the 40mm Apple Watch Series 6, while the 45mm ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌ replaces the 44mm ‌Apple Watch Series 6‌.

41 and 45mm size updates were rumored, as was the significant redesign for the display, but the design of the Apple Watch itself came as a surprise. Multiple rumors from Jon Prosser, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Bloomberg, and other sources suggested the ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌ would see a flat-edged design similar to the iPhone 12 models, but that did not happen.

Instead, Apple highlighted the soft, rounded corners of the ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌, which looks similar to the ‌Apple Watch Series 6‌ but with a wraparound design that offers seamless integration with the body of the device.

The new Apple Watch models have an edge-to-edge display with super slim bezels, best illustrated in Apple’s image comparison of the Series 7, Series 6, and Series 3.

According to Apple, the ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌ offers 20 percent more screen area than the Series 6 with a 40 percent reduction in border size.

Despite the increase in size to 41 and 45mm, the ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌ is compatible with older Apple Watch bands. New 41mm Apple Watch bands are backwards compatible with the 38mm and 40mm models, so the reverse should be true as well, while the 45mm Apple Watch bands work with the 42mm and 44mm Apple Watch models.

Existing 38mm and 40mm bands should be compatible with the 41mm ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌, and the 42mm and 44mm Apple Watch bands should be compatible with the 45mm Apple Watch.

Android 12: Is your phone compatible?

Recent Google Pixel phones like the Pixel 5 will enjoy an update to Android 12.

Juan Garzon/CNET

Android 12, Google’s latest version of its mobile OS, is just around the corner. With it comes one of the biggest overhauls Android has seen in years. In fact, Google expects the software to be the fastest, smoothest and flashiest version yet.

So when can you officially get your hands on that Android 12 goodness? Right now, it’s in the late stages of beta development. Although Google has not announced an official release date, we’re expecting Android 12 to release in either August or September based on release times of previous versions.

The big question is whether your phone will actually receive the massive update. At launch, only a select few models will. And to qualify for an upgrade at a later date, each handset must meet the hardware requirements. So if you’re eager to enjoy Android 12 on your own phone, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s everything we know about how that will likely play out.

Google I/O launches Android 12, ‘Project Starline’ and…

The power to perform

According to Google, to get the most out of Android 12 a device must qualify as “performance class.” Specifically, for Android 12 a handset needs a “performance class 12” minimum qualification. According to Google, a performance class “defines a set of device capabilities that goes beyond Android’s baseline requirements.”

Performance class 12 won’t necessarily exclude “performance class 11” devices for running Android 12, however. Performance class 11 Android phone owners can, in theory, install Android 12: They just won’t see all the OS bells and whistles available. Google has also said it will publish the requirements for performance class 11 when it releases Android 12.

Google Pixel 3 phones and later will get Android 12 when it launches.

Google will put Pixels first

Perhaps the biggest perk of buying a Google Pixel phone is the promise of timely updates. Google has pledged to provide three years of Android OS updates for each Pixel handset. The clock starts ticking from the moment each device goes up for sale in the Google Store.

That means the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, unveiled in 2018, are the oldest Pixel phones able to get Android 12. All newer Google handsets also qualify, including the Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5.

The flagship Samsung Galaxy S21 will certainly receive an eventual Android 12 update.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Samsung phones

Details for an Android 12 rollout on Samsung handsets aren’t as clear. Android 11 made its way to Samsung phones in December as part of the UI 3 update. The Samsung products currently capable of running UI 3 include the Galaxy S21 line, the Galaxy S20 line, the Galaxy Note 20 line, the Z Fold2, the Z Flip, and the Note10, Fold and S10 series.

Using this timing and precedent as a guide, it’s fair to say that we can expect UI 4 (along with Android 12) to hit the same premium Galaxy and Note phones in December 2021.

Other high-end phones like the OnePlus 9 Pro will likely get updated to Android 12 too.

Andrew Hoyle/CNET

Other high-end phones

Similar to the beta release of Android 12, we expect a slew of high-performance handsets to receive Android 12 updates besides Samsung. According to the website GetDroidTips, the tentative list includes devices from LG, Motorola, Nokia, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi, Vivo, Sony and Asus.

The Android 12 beta program is available to a group of premium phones such as the OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro, Asus Zenfone 8, Oppo Find X3 Pro and TCL 20 Pro 5G — just to name a few.
