SoCalGas: Worried about your sky-high gas bill? Customers urged to voice concerns to California Public Utilities Commission

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — As Californians struggle to pay sky-high natural gas bills, utility access activists are encouraging people to contact state regulators.

Mark Toney is the executive director of The Utilities Reform Network, a nonprofit also known as TURN that is working to ensure utilities are clean, safe and affordable.

He said people who are upset about the sudden jump in their SoCalGas bills need to call in to Thursday’s upcoming California Public Utilities Commission meeting and voice their anger.

“We’re just very concerned that this is out of control and something needs to be done to moderate these type of price spikes,” he told Eyewitness News.

SoCalGas said the wholesale price of natural gas has skyrocketed this winter, now up 128% just from December to January. The company is warning customers that if their peak winter bill was around $130 last year, it will most likely jump to roughly $315 this year.

Crestline resident Dennis Duvall is recovering from triple bypass surgery and suffers from Lupus. Those health issues keep him in the house around the clock with the thermostat set at about 75 degrees.

His latest bill was $918.75.

“I’ve got to pay it,” he said. “I’ve got to keep the heat on. It’s going to be very hard.”

Dave Miner of Crestline just saw his gas bill shoot up to $700.

“It’s taking money away from my kids, it’s taking money away from my grocery bill,” Miner said.

Toney said many California residents with medical problems qualify for programs like Medical Baseline to help bring utility costs down.

“They can sign up for Medical Baseline for the gas and get a reduced price and additional protections against shut-off if you fall behind on your bill,” said Toney.

Other tips to save gas?

“Turn down the thermostat if your health and your family’s health allows it, rely a little bit more on sweaters, blankets, closing off the vents in rooms that you’re not using,” Toney advises.

Bahamas Securities Commission says it seized $3.5B in FTX assets ‘for safekeeping’

The Securities Commission of the Bahamas said Thursday the agency seized all digital assets under the control of FTX’s Bahamian subsidiary FTX Digital Markets Ltd. — to the tune of more than $3.5 billion — “for safekeeping” following the cryptocurrency exchange’s collapse.

The regulator said in a press release that the funds were transferred to digital wallets under its exclusive control on Nov. 12, the day after FTX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, after determining “there was a significant risk of imminent dissipation” of the assets under FTXDM’s control based on information disgraced founder Sam Bankman-Fried provided concerning cyberattacks on the system.

FTX CUSTOMERS FILE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SAYING ASSETS BELONG TO THEM

The funds are being held “on a temporary basis,” the SCB said, while it waits for instructions from the Supreme Court of the Bahamas on whether the assets should be “delivered to the customers and creditors who own them” or to the court-appointed Joint Provisional Liquidators (JPLs) in charge of unwinding FTXDM.

The seizure of the funds by the Bahamian watchdog has been a source of contention between the agency and FTX’s new CEO, John Ray III, who replaced Bankman-Fried and filed FTX’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. after taking control of the firm. Bahamas-based FTXDM separately filed a Chapter 15 bankruptcy which has been rolled into the Chapter 11 – and both sides have been butting heads throughout the proceedings thus far.

US PROBES HOW $370 MILLION VANISHED IN HACK AFTER FTX BANKRUPTCY

The Security Commission of The Bahamas admitted last month to seizing the assets of FTXDM, but did not put a dollar amount on the figure at the time.

During his testimony before Congress in mid-December, Ray accused the Bahamian officials of taking the funds with the assistance of former FTX leadership, and claimed the authorities were being uncooperative.

“We’ve repeatedly asked them for clarity about what they’ve been doing,” Ray said of the Bahamian officials. “We’ve been shut down by them.”

Ray also said it appears Bankman-Fried, who was arrested hours before the hearing on several charges related to the FTX collapse, had attempted to undermine the U.S. bankruptcy process by moving company assets to accounts under the control of the Bahamian authorities.

Bahamian officials said in court filings that they requested a criminal investigation into FTX on Nov. 9 after then-FTXDM co-CEO Ryan Salame tipped them off in a phone call about alleged transfers of client funds from the exchange to sister company Alameda Research.

Mike Pence Federal Election Commission filing a fake, spokesman says

A spokesman for former vice president Mike Pence’s campaign denied reports on Monday that the Republican had filed to run for president in 2024, responding to an apparent hoax after screenshots of a Federal Election Commission posting began to circulate.

“Former Vice President Mike Pence did not file to run for President today,” Devin O’Malley wrote on Twitter. When reached for comment Monday, O’Malley confirmed his tweet and added: “You’ll have to reach out to the FEC for answers about the filing.”

When asked to comment Monday night, an FEC spokesperson wrote: “We cannot comment on specific filings.”

The report came as Republicans have made efforts toward running in the primary election against former president Donald Trump. Pence, who served as Trump’s vice president between 2017 and 2021, had planned to use the holidays in Indianapolis to consider a presidential campaign, an aide told The Washington Post last week.

Since refusing to try to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss, Pence, 63, has feuded with Trump and his supporters. Pence has recently hired fundraising aides but plans to continue his book tour in January for his autobiography, “So Help Me God,” an aide told The Post last week.

European Commission responds after Microsoft Activision comments from staffer receive backlash

The European Commission has clarified claims of perceived bias in the probe into Xbox Game Studios (Microsoft) [2,292 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/microsoft/”>Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard [1,162 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/activision-blizzard/”>Activision Blizzard deal, following comments from a senior staff member on social media.

Ricardo Cardoso, the Deputy Head of Unit Interinstitutional & Outreach at the governing body, tweeted earlier this week that the “Commission is working to ensure that you will still be able to play Call of Duty on other consoles (including my Playstation)”.

The statement, while factually in-line with the remit of the body, was met with criticism from some players over perceived Sony Interactive Entertainment [2,646 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/sony/”>Sony bias, especially following repeated assurance from Xbox [6,009 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/xbox/”>Xbox claiming Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation [6,517 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/playstation/”>PlayStation for the foreseeable future.

Now, the European Commission has clarified in a statement to Tweaktown that Cardoso is not involved in the process whatsoever.

Accolades Trailer | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

“Mr Cardoso works in the Director General for the Internal Market and not in the Directorate General for Competition,” the statement reads.

“Mr Cardoso is not involved in the assessment of this transaction. Furthermore, as indicated clearly in his Twitter profile, he tweets in a personal capacity.”

On Saturday Cardoso tweeted the following: “To clarify: I am not involved in the assessment of the merger and don’t even work in the department dealing with mergers. As is clear from my profile my comments are personal and not a Commission position, whose decision will be taken on the basis of the facts and the law.”

In the replies to the original tweet, the use of the word “my” when referring to PlayStation seems to have irked fans the most, however, Cardoso was seemingly referring to the console he owns, rather than an allegiance to a platform.

The European Commission has officially launched an in-depth probe of Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As expected, following its initial inquiries into the $68.7 billion deal, the European watchdog said on Tuesday that it had opened a ‘phase II’ investigation due to competition concerns.

“The Commission is concerned that the proposed acquisition may reduce competition in the markets for the distribution of console and personal computers (‘ PC [6,536 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/pc/”>PCs’) video games and for PC operating systems,” it said.

While the deal has been approved by regulators in Saudi Arabia and Brazil, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority recently expanded its investigation to a second phase. It is in the process of inviting members of the public to share their views on the acquisition before giving its final decision by March 1.

The US Federal Trade Commission could reportedly make its ruling on the deal this month.

Microsoft’s head of gaming Phil Spencer [487 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/people/phil-spencer/”>Phil Spencer recently said he believes heavy scrutiny from regulators is “fair” and “warranted”, and that he remains confident the deal will be approved.
