12 Upcoming Movies & Shows Marvel Kept Hidden From Comic-Con 2022 Event

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige gifted fans with a slate of Phase 5 projects including six blockbusters films and six Disney+ live-action series at this year’s Hall H panel on Saturday evening. With a rejuvenated roster of veterans and rookies, the MCU is primed for The Multiverse Saga to tell a story that could rival the magnitude of The Infinity Saga.

And while it may seem like the day after Christmas for most MCU fans, there is still plenty more yet to be announced about the MCU’s future. September’s D23 Expo is Disney’s own announcement showcase where many expect even more major announcements about future Marvel Studios projects. With less than 50 days until D23, what projects have Feige and Co. left unannounced in The Multiverse Saga?

Deadpool 3

Marvel

It takes a special IP to survive a reboot. Fans have seen legacy Marvel movie characters like Spider-Man and Professor X carry enough weight in their respected projects to transfer over to the MCU and bring their actors with them. Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is like peanut butter and jelly. Something that Marvel Studios could not pass up.

Reynolds is so vital to the success of this character he was even able to bring his director in his last two projects, Shawn Levy, into the MCU to direct the third Deadpool movie. While the timeline of this project is less certain than some of the specials, it is a matter of when and not if. With so much happening in the MCU with the Multiverse and crossovers with Fox and Sony Marvel projects, Deadpool will surely play a key role in exploration as one of the only characters capable of looking in the camera and telling the audience what is what.

Status: Sure Thing

Armor Wars

Marvel

One of the only remaining projects announced before Phase 4 that has yet to be given a release date is Don Cheadle’s first solo project.

Armor Wars is expected to do for James Rhodes what WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier did for Wanda Maximoff, Vision, Sam Wilson, and Bucky Barnes, respectively. If there is one thing Disney+ has proven it can do for the MCU, it is developing characters.

Armor Wars is intended to be War Machine’s time to shine, but it is also rumored to help foster Riri Williams as Ironheart. With the delays of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is Riri Williams’ MCU Debut, the buck kept getting passed, and Armour Wars is feeling the effects. If Riri is a player in this series, it cannot be released until after Ironheart, which is set for Fall of 2023.

It is interesting that Cheadle appears in 2023’s Secret Invasion. A role that will surely develop his character in a big way given the context of the story and Rhodey’s high-profile status in the American government. Still, another top contender to get a major update at D23.

Status: Sure Thing

Shang-Chi 2

Marvel

A shining star of Phase 4 that is sure to receive a sequel is Simi Liu and Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. With a post-credits scene actively setting up Shang-Chi as a future member of the Avengers, Shang-Chi 2 is sure to play a huge role in the overall narrative of The Multiverse Saga. Marvel Studios has a history of sequels like Captain America: The Winter Soldier to take advantage of a character-focused origin story and use that character to expand the universe.

Simu Liu will be back as Shang-Chi at some point. Maybe even in a surprise appearance before his sequel. But the sequel is coming, it is just unclear exactly when.

Status: Sure Thing

Spider-Man 4

Marvel

There was a time when Spider-Man 3’s future was unclear. The best caveat fans had was that the story had not been finished. Well, after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Jon Watts’ Homecoming trilogy is one of the best the superhero genre has ever seen. And despite Peter Parker’s amazing place left for future stories, it could end there, and fans would understand.

Nonetheless, like death and taxes, they will keep making Spider-Man movies, and Sony is showing no signs of letting go of the movie rights. This means that Marvel Studios will surely partner up to bring Tom Holland back for another go as a new and improved Peter Parker.

Rarely does an actor get a chance to play a character for a fifth time with a virtually clean slate of story ahead of him. The “reset” vibes of No Way Home have allowed the future of Spider-Man to be taken in any direction. What is that? No one knows. But it is going to make a lot of money.

Status: Your Move, Sony

Wakanda Series

Marvel

With Wakanda Forever releasing a teaser trailer that has taken the internet by storm, the Black Panther franchise has moved into a position to take over the MCU. The loss of lead man Chadwick Boseman is a tragic and devastating loss for Marvel Studios, fans, and the world. Thankfully, when Ryan Coogler directed the first Black Panther in 2018, he put special care into so many things beyond just his leading man.

The country of Wakanda, the supporting characters, and the culture surrounding Black Panther are one of the best examples of world-building the MCU has to offer. With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever set to reset the franchise’s course, expect the anticipated Wakanda series to be announced shortly after.

Status: Waiting on Wakanda Forever

Okoye

Marvel

General of the Dora Milaje, Avenger… solo project candidate. Danai Gurira is reportedly in talks to star in an “origin spinoff series” on Disney+ as Okoye. A scene stealer in her MCU debut Black Panther, Okoye became a key player in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. After a Dore Milaje appearance in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, the want for more Dora content is there.

To see the origin of one of the MCU’s best-supporting characters is the kind of thing that will generate instant buzz from fans. Much like the Wakanda series, this one is on hold until Okoye’s next appearance.

Status: Waiting on Wakanda Forever

The Ten Rings

Marvel

The Ten Rings was the first project on the list that was unofficially teased in a post-credits sceneLooking to capitalize on the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios is looking at Daniel Destin Cretton to bring more of that juice into the MCU.

Along with the Shang-Chi sequel, Cretton is expected to bring back Meng’er Zhang’s Xialing and the Ten Rings to Disney+. It is unclear when this show will take place in the MCU but much like the Wakanda-focused Disney+ content, it feels like this series is waiting for updates from its original franchise.

Status: Waiting on Shang-Chi 2

The Mutants

Marvel

Kevin Feige could have walked off stage after announcing the majority of the Phase 4 slate at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and fans would have rewarded him with thunderous applause. But of course, the showman he is, he left the audience with a slew of “oh, by the way”s. The least of which is the announcement of mutants coming to the MCU.

After the shocking finale of Ms. Marvel revealing Kamala Khan to be a mutant, the fuse has been lit. Now is just a waiting game of when the mutant era of the MCU goes boom.

With the development of The Multiverse Saga spanning three phases before 2026, it is possible that Marvel Studios practices patience and dedicates an entire saga to mutants. If no mutant projects are announced by the end of 2023, expect San Diego Comic-Con 2025 to announce The Mutant Saga.

Status: It Might Be A Minute

Nova

Marvel

Secret Wars is coming. And with that storyline, the MCU has an inherent crossover vibe. There is a balance to be made between introducing new characters to add depth to the roster and developing characters on the roster to have an even bigger impact by the end of Phase 6.

Introducing a character like Nova would greatly expand the cosmic branch of the MCU. It comes down to the decision to bring someone like this in late in the game only to play a huge role in the final quarter. After the response to Carol Danvers’ role in Endgame after Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios might decide to hold their Nova card just one more Saga.

Status: D23 or Phase 7

Wonder Man

Marvel

Another project that has been hot in the rumor mill for Marvel Studios is Wonder Man. A classic less than third-tier Marvel character that is begging for Marvel Studios to make him a household name. Wonder Man has comic book ties with the majority of 2000s Avengers stories. The kind of piece that can be adapted to fit any shape that is needed to best fill out the MCU puzzle. But with so many characters in need of development and more prominent names yet to make a debut, Wonder Man would be a surprise addition to the Multiverse Saga.

Status: Rumors for now

World War Hulk

Marvel

The Incredible Hulk vertical of Marvel Studios will finally be reprised in the upcoming She-Hulk series. While Jen Walters is best known for her work with street-level and Avengers-level characters in the comics, more Hulk means more opportunities. And one of the biggest opportunities still on the table for the MCU is World War Hulk.

With Planet Hulk being adapted in Thor: Ragnarok, there is still plenty of meat left on the bone for Mark Ruffalo to bring one of the biggest comic book stories of all time to life. The Hulk has always been on our side with only glimpses of what could happen when the table turns. WWH would bring that reality to light and, in the Multiverse Saga, it has never been more possible.

Status: We can only dream

Scarlett Johannsson-Produced MCU Project

Marvel

Last on the list is a mystery project teased by Kevin Feige that is set to bring one of the foundational members of the MCU back in a producer role. Scarlett Johannsson and Disney have settled their differences, and there is word of an MCU project that ScarJo will have major input on. The best bet will be Thunderbolts if it ends up starring her Black Widow costar, Florence Pugh.

Status: Up In The Air

BONUS PROJECTS

Werewolf By Night

Marvel

Arguably the biggest shock from the Marvel Studios SDCC panel was the lack of an official announcement for the rumored Werewolf By Night. Halloween Special is expected to release this fall; this project is set to be MCU veteran composer Michael Giacchino’s directorial debut. Filming began in March, and Giacchino told the Phase Zero Podcast in June that they hope to have something to share “very soon.”

So while it’s a surprise that Werewolf By Night did not get announced along with the rest of the Phase 5 slate, it is the biggest “sure thing” on this list. With the Supernatural Branch of the MCU officially starting up with Moon Knight, Werewolf By Night is expected to be the next spooky chapter. With Fall right around the corner, the expectation is for this special to be officially announced at D23. ‘

Status: Sure Thing

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Marvel

Another special that is expected in 2022 was surprisingly left out of San Diego Comic-Con. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was announced in December of 2020 and was filmed during the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Director James Gunn has called this project some of his best work, with rumors of a new fan-favorite MCU character being introduced.

Along with Werewolf By Night, it is possible that the classification of these specials kept them out of the SDCC Phase 5 slate. Marvel Studios had previously included animated projects like What If…? on their SDCC lineups, but this year Marvel Studios animation received a separate panel. Perhaps these projects fall under a different branch of the MCU, and all specials will be announced at D23. That is where the smart money is.

Status: Sure Thing

The Multiverse Saga has been happening for a year and a half, and already it feels like the end is near. So many possibilities to bring even more content into an already packed Phase 5 slate. With at least 8 open spots in Phase 6 ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars. Which of these projects will make their way into this story, and which ones will be kept until the next era of the MCU? Only the man in the hat knows, and all eyes are on D23 for answers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s Villain: Who Is the High Evolutionary? | Comic-Con 2022

We’re blasting off once again, as James Gunn reassembles the Guardians of the Galaxy for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The long-awaited-threequel is pitched to round off this cosmic roster of rag-tag rogues, and thanks to San Diego Comic-Con, we finally have confirmation that Peacemaker’s Chukwudi Iwuji will be playing the Marvel character known as the High Evolutionary. (The actor even showed up at SDCC 2022 in costume!)

Fans already knew Iwuji would have a part to play in Vol. 3, with reports indicating he’d appear in the film as a “deeply complex” and “extremely powerful” addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following in the footsteps of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Living Tribunal and Thor: Love and Thunder’s Eternity, this cosmic character from the MCU is welcome addition. But just who is the High Evolutionary?

Who Is the High Evolutionary?

Back when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 started casting, many thought the Vol. 2 post-credits tease of Adam Warlock meant Will Poulter’s character was the villain of the movie. But now it seems the High Evolutionary, who started off as an obscure Thor foe, will be stepping up as this movie’s de facto big bad.

Introduced in 1966’s The Mighty Thor #133 and #134, the High Evolutionary is also known as Herbert Edgar Wyndham. A scientist with a great interest in, you guessed it, evolution, Wyndham’s mission in life is to artificially accelerate mankind’s evolution.

Thor #134

An X-Men Connection

The comics tell us that the High Evolutionary took an interest in the works of Nathaniel Essex – better known as X-Men villain Mister Sinister – but he took things even further.

Much like Essex, Wyndham wanted to perfect human genetics through experimentation, meaning he inadvertently created a race of talking animals called the New Men in his “citadel of science” that was placed in Wundagore. Tying back to the MCU, Mount Wundagore was a major point of interest in Multiverse of Madness, and where we last saw Wanda Maximoff before she may or may not have died (she’s totally not dead, come on). After being abandoned by partner Doctor Jonathan Drew (father of Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman), Wyndham gave himself a suit of silver armor to protect him from werewolves (comics!). This gave the character his signature supervillain look (which Iwuji showcased a variation of at SDCC). The High Evolutionary dubbed his experiments the Knights of Wundagore, and used them to ensure the demonic god Chthon was trapped there (that’s a Wanda Maximoff connection right there).

6 Comics Teased at Marvel’s Next Big Thing Panel at Comic-Con 2022

The High Evolutionary and the Scarlet Witch

The character does have a variety of ties to familiar characters in the MCU. Eventually he was revealed to be the puppet master behind Pietro and Wanda Maximoff’s getting their powers in the comics. The movie franchise has established that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch gained their abilities via the Mind Stone and experimentation done by HYDRA, but this could still be retconned to include the High Evolutionary.

That said, it seems likely the High Evolutionary of Vol. 3 will connect to Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) and her people the Sovereign, who we first met on the big screen in Vol. 2. His evolutionary skills could connect to Ayesha’s creation of Adam Warlock (not to mention any possible revenge plot she might have against the Guardians). Speaking of…

Pietro and Wanda Maximoff’s complicated origin story involves the High Evolutionary.

The Adam Warlock Connection

Back in the comics, having had enough with our Earth, the High Evolutionary established Counter-Earth with the New Men, and then bestowed the Soul Stone to Adam Warlock. But with the Infinity Stones seemingly destroyed in the main canon of the MCU, we’ll have to wait and see whether Gunn has adapted this aspect of Warlock’s origin story.

Eventually, the enormously powerful cosmic beings the Beyonders eventually tricked Warlock into murdering the High Evolutionary. With Secret Wars just announced as the current, uh, endgame of Phases 4, 5, and 6, this could be a significant fact to remember since the Beyonders were a key part of that comics storyline. Could the High Evolutionary stick around for several phases before buying it at the hands of Warlock in that sure-to-be epic?

Of course, in typical style, death was only temporary. Later issues saw the High Evolutionary try to take over Earth and catch the attention of the Avengers. A super-evolved Hercules was sent to stop him, which again could tie to the post-credits tease of Zeus’ son in Thor: Love and Thunder. Hercules and the High Evolutionary eventually evolved themselves out of existence and were imprisoned by the Celestials. More recently, he battled Ultron and Phalanx warriors who wanted to seize Warlock for themselves. Although it looked like Warlock perished, his consciousness lived on and the High Evolutionary knew he’d survive to lead the “new” Guardians of the Galaxy. Given that Gunn said this is “probably” the last time we’ll see the current team, this all sort of fits into place if we’re looking at a brand-new lineup for a potential fourth Guardians movie.

The Cosmic and the Rocket (Raccoon)

The character also has ties to the cosmic side of Marvel, like Galactus and the Silver Surfer, who of course are tightly connected to the Fantastic Four. An FF movie might seem a long way off, but if the High Evolutionary is sticking around for a little longer, we could see the comics story of him draining the Silver Surfer’s powers for himself.

As for where you might’ve seen the High Evolutionary before, he had a small arc in X-Men: The Animated Series, was in Spider-Man: Unlimited, and was then voiced by Nolan North in Disney XD’s Guardians of the Galaxy series.

In that latter story, he captured Rocket Raccoon. And there’s plenty of backstory left to explore with Rocket in the MCU, with the first footage of Guardians 3 from SDCC revealing that we’ll be seeing a young version of the character. It seems pretty clear that the High Evolutionary must’ve played a part in Rocket’s origin (remember all those cybernetic implants on his body?).

Disney’s Star Wars Costumes Make the Jump to Comic-Con

The High Evolutionary has also crossed paths with everyone from Spider-Man’s Dr. Miles Warren (the Jackal) to Hulk, trying to accelerate the latter forward by a million years in evolution. If anything, his abilities as a leading geneticist should at least raise a few eyebrows given a recent X-Men hint in the MCU. The franchise loves a “mad scientist” stereotype, and even if this character’s comic origin isn’t necessarily linked to the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn is set to put his own spin on the source material. Whether the High Evolutionary is a one-and-done villain remains to be seen, but either way, fans are ready to welcome Iwuji into the MCU.

What do you hope to see from the High Evolutionary and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Interview with the Vampire trailer drops at Comic-Con ahead of upcoming AMC series

A trailer for the upcoming AMC Interview with the Vampire series was released Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, as the forthcoming adaptation of the 1976 Anne Rice novel heads to the small screen this fall.

The gothic horror series will consist of seven episodes and star Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt, Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac, Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy, Chris Stack as Thomas ‘Tom’ Anderson and Kalyne Coleman as Grace De Pointe Du Lac.

In the preview for the series, which is set in New Orleans in 1910, Lestat is seen lurking near Louis, who is heard saying, ‘I was being hunted and I was completely unaware it was happening.’

The latest: A new trailer for the upcoming AMC Interview with the Vampire series, starring Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid, was released Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, as the forthcoming adaptation of the 1976 Anne Rice novel heads to the small screen this fall

Lestat tells Louis, ‘I’ve been watching you for sometime now, Louis. I could swap this life of shame. Swap it out for a dark gift. You just have to ask me for it.’

In the preview, Lestat is seen converting Louie into a vampire biting his neck, later on murdering a priest who Louie speaks to about being a vampire.

Series showrunner Rolin Jones described the series at Comic-Con as ‘an aggressive, beautiful love story,’ that will be more ‘even more reverential’ to the novel than the hit 1994 film which starred Tom Cruise as Lestat and Brad Pitt as Louis, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Molloy, the journalist in the story who interviews Louis, ‘is much better at his job than in the books’ in the series, Jones said, and ‘that some version, primordial version, of the Brat Prince has been put back into this.’

Anderson plays Louis de Pointe du Lac and Sam Reid plays Lestat de Lioncourt in the series, which is set in New Orleans in 1910

In the preview, Lestat is seen converting Louie into a vampire biting his neck

Eric Bogosian plays journalist Daniel Molloy in the adaptation of the Anne Rice novel

Lestat is seen lurking near Louis in the trailer for the series

Bogosian opened up about details in the storyline of the series, as his character had previously tried in vain to interview Louis as a rookie reporter.

‘The script is very clear that it’s 40-something years later, and Daniel is no longer the boy who was a novice journalist, just starting out, making tapes of this vampire interview,’ Bogosian said. ‘Now he’s getting a second crack at it. He’s been very successful, he’s actually on the downside of his career, and this is his last chance to grab the brass ring. It’s dangerous, but he wants to go get that story.’

He continued: ‘He’s much craftier than he was when he was a kid. He won’t let Louis lie to him. He’s going to get the story. He’s afraid, of course, he’s afraid. And he’s trying to scare me.

‘There’s also the temptation. It’s always sitting there. He says, “I can make you one of us if you want,” and that’s always there as a temptation. It’s very complex, and it was wonderful playing that.’

Reid, Anderson and Rolin Jones were on a panel during 2022 Comic Con International: San Diego at the San Diego Convention Center Saturday

Bogosian and Bailey Bass were seen speaking on the panel

Bogosian said of his role on the series, ‘It’s very complex, and it was wonderful playing that’

Interview with the Vampire is slated to debut on AMC October 2 at 10/9c, and will stream on AMC+

Executive producer Mark Johnson said that hopes are high the series will lead to more content from the book, as well as Rice’s other material.

‘The books are so much fun, and they’re so different,’ Johnson said. ‘It’s hard to believe sometimes that they’re connected, but they are. While one might be about vampires and one might be about witches and one might be about God knows what, they are all connected.

‘You guys will tell us whether this will be a franchise or not but I believe that this world, the Anne Rice world, is going to go on for some time on AMC.’

Interview with the Vampire is slated to debut on AMC October 2 at 10/9c, and will stream on AMC+.

She-Hulk’s Comic-Con trailer spoils a cameo with a better cameo

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law
Photo: Disney+, Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios spent a good chunk of its time at San Diego Comic-Con talking about Daredevil, what with Charlie Cox’s version of The Man Without Fear getting his (second) solo show in Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again and Cox benefitting from the MCU hitting the retcon button haaaarrrrrd in a new animated series called Spider-Man: Freshman Year (where we will apparently find out that young Spidey met not only Cox’s Hornhead but new versions of Norman Osborn and Henry Osborn, plus Amadeus Cho and Nico Minoru, before the events of Captain America: Civil War).

But those aren’t the only places where Daredevil popped up this weekend: He also made a quick cameo in the new trailer for Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney At Law series, flipping into frame right at the end and wearing what appears to be a new costume inspired by his original black-and-yellow outfit from the comics (arguably his worst one, to be honest). The trailer cuts away before you see his face, so this could be some kind of cruel fake-out (get hyped, singular fan of D-Man!), but who else carries billy clubs and does flips like that?

Official Trailer | She-Hulk: Attorney at Law | Disney+

Anyway, the rest of the trailer leans hard into comedy, just like the first one did, with Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters bantering with her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) as he trains her in the ways of the Hulk and then getting into some fish-out-of-water hijinks when she returns to New York to start a new life as a giant, green attorney. That’s where she meets various superhero-adjacent characters, like Tim Roth’s Abomination (who was in the last trailer), Benedict Wong’s Wong (from Doctor Strange!), and a group of goons who appear to be classic Marvel villains The Wrecking Crew.

That’s all fun! And the implied existence of sex in the first trailer is even more implied here! Wow! But then Daredevil shows up and that’s all we want to talk and think about. Will She-Hulk and Daredevil get to have a courtroom scene? Will this show acknowledge any events from the Netflix Daredevil show? Will we get to see an appearance from Daredevil’s incorrigible twin brother Mike Murdock (who is definitely a real person and not Matt Murdock in a hat)?

We’ll find out on August 17 when She-Hulk: Attorney At Law premieres on Disney+.

Marvel Studios Phase 5: Kevin Feige Lifts Curtain at Comic-Con

Three years after unveiling Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige returned to Hall H to do the same for Phase 5, which included announcements for the new “Daredevil” Disney+ series and the “Thunderbolts” feature film. Feige also gave a brief glimpse into what is coming in Phase 6, which is scheduled to conclude in Nov. 2025 with “Avengers: Secret Wars” — which Feige says caps off the Multiverse Saga of the MCU.

Here’s everything we learned about the rest of Phase 4, Phase 5, and what’s to come in Phase 6.

PHASE 4

Adam B. Vary / Variety

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”
Premiere date: Aug. 17

What we learned: A legal comedy with a touch of “Fleabag,” this Disney+ series starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters (i.e. Bruce Banner’s cousin) boasts a cavalcade of superheroes who need a good lawyer — who is also giant and green. The panel also included a trailer, which (unlike a lot of the footage unveiled in Hall H) was also released publicly.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
Release date: Nov. 11

What we learned: Namor (Tenoch Huerta) is coming to the MCU, as the kingdom of Wakanda reels after the death of T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman). Joining the cast are Dominique Thorne (as Riri Williams), Michaela Coel (Aneka), Mabel Cadena (Namora) and Alex Livanalli (Attuma). This film will conclude Phase 4, though it’s unclear exactly how. Watch the trailer here.

PHASE 5

Michael Buckner / Variety

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”
Release date: Feb. 17, 2023

What we learned: Phase 5 launches with the introduction of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), who meets Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) in the Quantum Realm after Scott is mysteriously sucked there along with his daughter Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer). In footage screened just in Hall H, Bill Murray has a cameo as an old acquaintance of Janet’s from within the Quantum Realm, but given Kang’s titular role in one of two “Avengers” titles announced on Saturday (more below), all eyes are on how Majors will reshape the narrative of the MCU. Plus, Director Peyton Reed confirmed to the crowd yet another great Marvel villain would be making a cameo in this film, “you might have seen a shot of MODOK,” Reed said.

“Secret Invasion”
Premiere date: Spring 2023

What we learned: Co-star Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) was on hand to preview this dark and gritty political thriller, which stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, alongside Ben Mendelsohn (the Skrull Talos), Don Cheadle (James Rhodes), and Martin Freeman (Everett K. Ross). Joining them are Kingsley Ben-Adir (seen multiplying into several identical forms in a confrontation with Fury), Olivia Colman (seen telling Fury he’s past his prime) and Emilia Clarke (seen brandishing a gun). The overall vibe is one of paranoia and foreboding, contributing to a larger anti-heroic thread that seems to run through Phase 5.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
Release date: May 5, 2023

What we learned: An emotional James Gunn and his equally emotional cast — including Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter and Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog — debuted the first look at the final Guardians film, which hinted at revealing how Rocket became a sentient, walking raccoon. Chukwudi Iwuji (formerly of DC’s “Peacemaker”) plays the High Evolutionary, and introduced himself to Hall H in character (implying that he played a role in Rocket’s transformation).

Marvel Studios

“Echo”
Premiere date: Summer 2023

What we learned: Nothing more than the release period for the series that spins off “Hawkeye” antagonist Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) into her own spin-off. Sydney Freeland (“Reservation Dogs,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”) and Catriona McKenzie (“The Walking Dead,” “Shining Vale”) are directing.

Marvel Studios

“Loki” Season 2
Premiere date: Summer 2023

What we learned: The Disney+ series that introduced the multiverse to the MCU is currently filming and will debut next summer. There was nary a mention of this critically adored series, but pictures from set have been fluttering across the internet as of late.

Marvel Studios

“Blade”
Release date: Nov. 3, 2023

What we learned: Feige made no casting announcements, but he confirmed that the reboot of the Marvel comics vampire franchise with Mahershala Ali — first announced in 2019 in Hall H — will be Marvel’s final feature for 2023, and starts shooting in October. Bassam Tariq (“Mogul Mowgli”) is directing.

Marvel Studios

“Ironheart”
Premiere date: Fall 2023

What we learned: After her introduction in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) will star in her own Disney+ series. Chinaka Hodge (“Amazing Stories,” “Snowpiercer”) is head writer, and Sam Bailey (“Dear White People”) and Angela Barnes (“Blindspotting”) are directing.

Marvel Studios

“Agatha: Coven of Chaos”
Premiere date: Winter 2023/2024

What we learned: Originally titled “Agatha: House of Harkness,” this “WandaVision” spinoff centered on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness will be Marvel’s final Disney+ series in 2023. “WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer will write and executive produce the show.

Marvel Studios

“Daredevil: Born Again”
Premiere date: Spring 2024

What we learned: Original launched as part of the Netflix slate of Marvel TV series (which were nominally part of the MCU), Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock is being (fully) brought into the Marvel Studios fold with a Disney+ series that is getting an unprecedented 18-episode order for its first season. Cox’s Murdock first reappeared in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and his nemesis Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) popped up as the big bad on 2021’s “Hawkeye.” Both characters are set to show up on “Echo,” and it appears that Daredevil will also appear on “She-Hulk,” before returning for the main event in this series.

On Netflix, the “Daredevil” series was far more violent and bloody than anything that’s been produced by Marvel Studios directly, further suggesting that the MCU’s Phase 5 will wade deeper into the moral murk than it ever has before.

Marvel Studios

“Captain America: New World Order”
Release date: May 3, 2024

What we learned: We’ve known since the conclusion of the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) would return in his own feature film as Captain America. In Hall H, Feige announced the eyebrow-raising title — more anxiety and dread! — and a release date that gives the film the prime position for Marvel’s 2024 film slate.

Marvel Studios

“Thunderbolts”
Release date: July 25, 2024

What we learned: Phase 5 ends with Marvel’s answer to DC’s Suicide Squad: A team up film about a bunch of MCU anti-heroes. Feige said he would talking about casting another day, but there are plenty of candidates already, including Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Abomination (Tim Roth), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

PHASE 6

Michael Buckner / Variety

“Fantastic 4”
Release date: Nov. 8, 2024

What we learned: While “Spider-Man: No Way Home” filmmaker Jon Watts recently stepped away from directing “Fantastic 4,” Marvel Studios is full steam ahead with bringing the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Marvel comic book series into the MCU. The Fantastic Four and lead villain Victor Von Doom play critical roles in the comic book inspiration for the final movie in the Multiverse Saga, so launching Phase 4 with them makes sense.

What is surprising is that the entire Phase 6 run lasts less than a year.

Marvel Studios

“Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”
Release date: May 2, 2025

What we learned: Similar to how “Avengers: Infinity War” set up “Avengers: Endgame,” Feige made clear that Phase 6 of the MCU — and the Multiverse Saga — will conclude with two “Avengers” movies. Given the title, it’s safe to presume that Majors’ Kang the Conqueror is the Thanos (or maybe a Thanos) of the Multiverse Saga.

Marvel Studios

“Avengers: Secret Wars”
Release date: Nov. 7, 2025

What we learned: After many fans — and some entertainment publications — wondered aloud this year about where, exactly, the MCU was heading, Feige took the time in Hall H to finally say: Here.

“Secret Wars” points to a Marvel comics crossover miniseries from 2015 that involves an incursion between the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) and the Ultimate Marvel universe (Earth-1610) leading to the destruction of both. In its wake, many variants of Marvel characters find themselves living in a post-apocalyptic planet called Battleworld.

It is unclear, and will be for some time, how much Marvel Studios will draw from the 2015 “Secret Wars” — or the mid-1980s “Secret Wars” miniseries that inspired it. But perhaps the most important detail is what happened after the “Secret Wars”: Marvel Studios effectively rebooted, launching “all-new, all-different” versions of many of its most beloved titles, as some (but not all) characters from the 616 an 1610 universes found themselves living within a somewhat rebooted timeline.

Could the same be in store for the MCU? Only time(lines) will tell.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Trailer Unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel went wild, announcing MCU plans and new Avengers movies, but the first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arguably stole the show.

Black Panther was a mega-hit back in 2018, and a sequel seemed an obvious and immediate plan. But then star Chadwick Boseman passed away of colon cancer, and nothing seemed obvious or immediate. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige promised that Boseman would not be replaced, and future movies would “do Chad proud.”

Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Black Panther Wakanda Forever will do just that.

Just visually, this trailer blew us away. Musically, the seamless transition from Bob Marley to Kendrick Lamar was equally as incredible.

Returning cast members include Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okove, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Letitia Wright as Shuri, and Winston Duke as M’Baku.

It’s just the latest in a massive day for Marvel news. Today we already got insight into the next phase of Marvel movies and TV shows and two new Avengers movies were announced.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to open in theaters on Nov. 11.

Chadwick Boseman Remebered At Comic-Con – Deadline

“I promise you, I feel his hand on me right now,” said Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler remembering late star Chadwick Boseman.

“Chad’s passion and genius and his culture and the impact he made on this industry will be felt forever,” continued the filmmaker at the movie’s Comic-Con Hall H presentation, where the first trailer for the film was unveiled.

Watch it above.

“We put our love for Chadwick into this film. We also put our passion. This film has a ton of action and humor. It’s also a roller coaster of a movie. It goes to new places in Wakanda that we’ve never been before but other corners of the MCU.”

“The universe of Wakanda is expanding and you have a lot to look forward to,” said Lupita Nyong’o.

“It’s a blessing, we’ve grown so much. It’s an honor to bring this movie to you and honor big brother,” said Letitia Wright about the sequel honoring Oscar nominee Boseman.

Said Dominique Thorne, “I think we all know that the impact that Black Panther had on the world is indelible, it’s indescribable, it’s physical, emotional, mental and most of all spiritual. So to be a part of it returning to the screen and highlighting these beautiful stories from this very necessary perspective, it’s a blessing.”

Said Tenoch Huerta who is joining the cast, “I want to say something really fast about inclusion. I come from the hood. Seriously. And thanks to inclusion, I’m here. I wouldn’t be here without inclusion and a lot of kids are here in their hoods looking at us, dreaming to be here. And they [can] make it.”

The trailer showed Angela Bassett’s Ramonda as Queen of Wakanda. There’s a war with another tribe and armed forces as antagonists. Houses are on fire. We see someone dressed in the Black Panther costume at the end, but we don’t know who that is. A version of Wailer’s “No Woman No Cry” plays as this is very much a femme driven story. Among the new environs of Wakanda we see our the beaches. Ramonda is seen giving an angry speech, “My entire is family is gone”

Prior to the cast and Coogler taking the stage, a huge African musical inspired troupe entered Hall H and raised the roof.

Feige said earlier that Phase 4 would end with Wakanda Forever on Nov. 11 this year.

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Shows First Look at Comic-Con

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” showed off its first official look at Marvel Studios’ huge panel at San Diego Comic-Con, showcasing action inside the quantum realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Director Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Kathryn Newton appeared onstage to help unveil the footage, with Rudd teasing where his hero, Scott Lang, is at after the seismic events of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Scott is pretty pleased with himself in his role with saving the universe,” Rudd told the cheering crowd. “Scott’s been busy at work–ish. With a little book. And I don’t know what else I’m supposed to say!”

“The second film is all about how powerful she is,” Lilly said, offering a tease of where the film is at now. “This one is about her vulnerabilities.”

The group then stood aside to showcase a bit of footage exclusive to Comic-Con attendees, involving first looks of Bill Murray’s character in the film, Jonathan Majors’ villain Kang the Conquerer and the briefest shot of MODOK, the bigheaded cybernetic villain from Marvel Comics, making his live-action MCU debut. MODOK did not speak in the trailer, giving fans little hint as to who could be playing the mutagenic monster.

“You’re an interesting man, Scott Lang,” Majors’ villain says in the trailer. “You’ve lost a lot of time. But time, it isn’t what you think.”

Marvel star and ageless Hollywood wonder Rudd returns for his third “Ant-Man” movie alongside Lilly as Hope van Dyne, a.k.a. the Wasp. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer also return as inventor Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne, who was rescued from the quantum realm in 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”

The last time we saw Majors in the MCU, he was playing He Who Remains in the Season 1 finale of “Loki” on Disney+. He Who Remains was a variant of Kang from an alternate timeline, who was revealed as the creator of the Time Variance Authority from “Loki” and the last remaining person at the Citadel at the End of Time. However, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) kills He Who Remains, unleashing multiversal chaos and inviting the wrath of other variants of He Who Remains and Kang.

Newton, who’s starred in “Big Little Lies” and movies like “Freaky” and “Pokemon Detective Pikachu,” is taking over the aged-up role of Cassie Lang. After the time jump in “Avengers: Endgame,” Scott Lang discovers that his little daughter Cassie, played by Abby Ryder Fortson in the first two movies, grew up without him and became a teen, played by Emma Fuhrmann. Now, Newton has her own purple Ant-Man suit and looks ready to take on her superhero alter-egos of either Stature or Stinger from the comics.

“Cassie is becoming who she’s supposed to be,” Newton told the Comic-Con crowd. “And I don’t want to say anything else.”

Peyton Reed directs “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” making him the second director to helm a trilogy of films in the MCU, outside of Jon Watts’ “Spider-Man” films. James Gunn will follow, completing his series with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” next summer.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” hits theaters on Feb. 17, 2023.
