King Charles announces first Trooping the Colour, new titles for royal family

It’s been just over three months since King Charles III took over the throne — and the monarch has been busy making changes within the royal family.

On Wednesday, the palace announced the King was giving Kate Middleton, Prince William and Queen Consort Camilla Parker-Bowles new titles while also revealing the date for his birthday celebration, known as the Trooping the Colours.

Charles’ daughter-in-law was officially named the new honorary Colonel of the Irish Guard, a title previously held by her husband.

The monarch announced lots of changes for the royal family on Wednesday.

Given Middleton’s new role, the Prince of Wales was fittingly appointed as Colonel of the Welsh Guards.

King Charles also revealed that the Queen Consort will serve as the Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, a position previously held by the disgraced Prince Andrew.

Amid the changes, the palace also announced the annual Trooping of the Colours will take place on June 17, 2023 — despite Charles’ 75th birthday actually being in November.

The King seems to have taken his late mother’s lead by deciding to hold the parade months before his actual name day due to better weather.

The parade — which also celebrates the armed forces — will showcase more than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians, according to Buckingham Palace.

In fact, some royals will also participate in the parade while riding horseback for thousands of people to cheer on from afar.

The big day is set to take place just six weeks after Charles’ coronation day — which could potentially be another family reunion.

The parade will celebrate both the armed forces and Charles’ birthday.

According to the Daily Mail, the monarch plans to invite son Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, to the event despite their strained relationship.

“Harry is his son and His Majesty will always love him,” the insider said. “While things are difficult at the moment, the door will always be left ajar.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle playfully shush younger royals during Trooping the Colour ceremony

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had a playful moment during the Trooping the Colour ceremony.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were seen playfully shushing the younger royals while watching the parade during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Harry was seen holding his finger to his mouth as he bent down next to his cousin, Lena Tindall, 3.

His wife, Markle, echoed a similar gesture to the group of young girls, including Zara Tindall’s children, Lena and Mia, 8, and Peter Phillips’ daughter Savannah, 11. The girls playfully mimicked the Duchess’ motion back to her.

The shushing moment has been seen before during royal events. Harry, during the Battle of Britain parade in 1990, shushed his cousin, Princess Beatrice, when he was 5 years old. He put his hand over the then 2-year-old’s mouth during the flypast ceremony at the Trooping the Colour.

QUEEN ELIZABETH THROUGH THE YEARS

This year, the royal couple watched the historic event from the Major General’s Office overlooking the Horse Guards Parade. Since Harry and Markle are no longer senior members of the royal family, they couldn’t watch the event from the balcony of Buckingham Palace with the rest of the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee marks the first time Markle and Harry have returned to the U.K. for a royal event since leaving England in 2020. The couple currently reside in Montecito, California.

Harry opted to wear a navy suit instead of his traditional ceremonial uniform he has worn in the past. Markle wore a navy-blue dress with a large hat during the Queen’s birthday celebrations.

The Trooping the Colour ceremony – along with the other events during the Platinum Jubilee – celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years of reign. She became the first British Monarch to reach this monumental accomplishment.

Friday’s activities will include the Service of Thanksgiving, which the palace shared Queen Elizabeth will no longer be attending due to “discomfort.”

“The Queen greatly enjoyed today’s Birthday Parade and Flypast but did experience some discomfort,” a statement from the palace said. “Taking into account the journey and activity required to participate in tomorrow’s National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, Her Majesty with great reluctance has concluded that she will not attend.”

“The Queen is looking forward to participating in tonight’s Beacon lighting event at Windsor Castle and would like to thank all those who made today such a memorable occasion,” the statement concluded.

The Platinum Jubilee began on June 2 and will conclude on June 5.

Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Seen Watching Trooping The Colour

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations began on Thursday, the first day of a four-day holiday to honor her 70 years on the British throne.

Thursday’s main event was Trooping the Colour, the annual military parade held in honor of the monarch’s birthday. Tens of thousands of people lined the streets of London for the event, to the delight of the 96-year-old Queen, who couldn’t keep from smiling when she appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the parade.

And while the Queen watched from the Palace, other members of the royal family watched from down the road — including two people who have been absent from the Mountbatten-Windsor family fold for more than two years.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (aka Meghan Markle), were photographed watching the parade with other members of the royal family in the Major General’s Office overlooking Horse Guards Parade.

Meghan was seen playfully shushing 3-year-old Lena Tindall, as young royals Savannah Phillips, Isla Phillips, and Lena’s sister Mia Tindall watched and laughed.

Amazing video shows how squid change colour to camouflage themselves from predators

You’ve got to be squidding me! Amazing video shows squid changing COLOUR to camouflage itself from predators for the first time – just like octopuses

  • Many cephalopods including octopuses and cuttlefish use camouflage
  • This led researchers to question whether squid also display this ability
  • While cleaning their tank, the team observedthe squid changing colours
  • When they were over algae, the squid appeared dark green, but when they were against the clean tank, they changed to a lighter shade

From chameleons to octopuses, many animals are famous for their use of camouflage to hide from predators.

Now, squid have been caught on camera employing the same techniques for the first time.

Researchers from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University spotted a species of oval squid changing colour to blend in with its background when it sensed a predator might be nearby.

‘This effect really is striking. I am still surprised that nobody has noticed this ability before us,’ said Dr Zdenek Lajbner, first author of the study.

‘It shows just how little we know about these wonderful animals.’

Camouflage in the animal kingdom

Many animals have evolved methods of camouflage, making it hard for predators (or prey) to spot them.

A common example is the snowshoe hare, which is a brilliant white colour to blend in with its snowy surroundings. The animal has the remarkable ability to develop a different coloured fur in the summer, to blend in with the changing terrain.

Stick insects developed a different method, changing their shape to resemble their habitat – twigs.

Octopuses can change both their colour and texture to blend in with the sea bed and rocky outcrops.

Predators have got in on the act too, with the stripes of a tiger and the sandy hues of a lion helping them to blend in with forest and grassland, respectively.

Many cephalopods including octopuses and cuttlefish use camouflage, which led the researchers to question whether squid also display this ability.

‘Squid usually hover in the open ocean but we wanted to find out what happens when they move a bit closer to a coral reef or if they’re chased by a predator to the ocean floor,’ explained Dr Ryuta Nakajima, one of the lead researchers.

Since 2017, the researchers have been culturing a species of oval squid known locally as Shiro-ika at their research facility in Okinawa.

While cleaning their tank to remove algae, the researchers accidentally observed the squid changing colour.

When they were over the algae, the squid appeared dark green, but when they were against the clean tank, they changed to a lighter shade.

Following their initial observation, the researchers performed a controlled experiment to verify their findings.

Several squid were kept in a tank while half was cleaned, and the other half was left covered in algae.

An underwater camera was placed inside the tank, while a regular camera was suspended above it, allowing them to film the animals from two angles.

The footage confirmed their initial observations – when the squid were on the clean side, they were a light colour, but quickly became darker when they were above the algae.

While the findings are exciting, in that they mark the first time squid have been seen camouflaging, they could also have important implications for coral reefs, according to the researchers.

‘If substrate is important for squid to avoid predation then that indicates that increases or decreases in squid populations are even more tied to the health of coral reef than we thought,’ explained Dr Nakajima.

The team now hopes to study squid further to understand more about their camouflaging abilities.

Professor Jonathan Miller, senior author of the study, concluded: ‘We look forward to continuing to explore the camouflage capabilities of this species and cephalopods more generally.’

CAMOUFLAGE TECHNIQUES USED BY BOTH PLANTS AND ANIMALS

Plants may appear passive but they camouflage themselves just like animals, research has revealed.

Blending into the background helps plants protect themselves from predators and has the same benefits as the technique does to animals.

They use various crafty techniques including making themselves look like unimportant objects such as a stones.

Background matching – this involves blending with the colours of shapes of the habitat where they live.

Disruptive coloration – markings that create the appearance of false edges and boundaries, making it harder to see the true outline.

Masquerade – looking like something else; usually something a predator might ignore, such a stone or twig.

Examples include living stones, some cacti, passion vines and mistletoes.

Decoration – accumulating material from the environment.

For example, some coastal and dune plants get covered by sand because of their sticky glands, making them less conspicuous of shapes of the habitat where they live.

Kate Middleton debuts ‘serious’ dark brown hair colour and ‘toned down’ makeup

The Duchess of Cambridge debuted a new, more ‘serious’ look for her first engagement of 2022, a beauty expert has explained.

Kate, 40, joined Prince William, 39, at the Foundling Museum in London yesterday, as they returned to in-person royal duties following a few weeks off over the festive season.

The mother-of-three, who has been patron of the museum since 2019, complimented her clothing choice of wide-leg black trousers, black polo neck jumper and a long-line navy coat, with a darker hair colour and toned-down makeup to create an overall ‘professional’ look, in contrast to the ‘Christmas glamour’ of recent months.

While her makeup in the weeks leading up to Christmas was characterised by a bronzed glow and dewy skin, yesterday Kate enhanced her natural English rose complexion with just a touch of pink on the cheeks and a slick of lipstick.

Speaking to FEMAIL, Laura Kay, makeup expert and founder of Laura Kay London, added that she has swapped her richer, chestnut autumn locks for a single darker brown shade that reflects the sombre mood at the start of the year.

‘To kick off the New Year Kate has emerged with a completely toned-down appearance,’ Laura said.

New year, new Kate! The Duchess of Cambridge debuted a new, more ‘serious’ look for her first engagement of 2022, a beauty expert has explained. Kate showcased a darker hair colour and a ‘toned down’ makeup look at the Foundling Museum in London yesterday (above)

Festive glamour: Kate’s hair was a warmer, richer tone of brown at an outing to a London school in November (above). She also opted for a more dewy makeup base and darker eyes

‘Her make-up is clean and fresh with a natural pink lip. Her matt foundation is quite powdery which contrasts against her new hair which is a dark brown block colour.

‘Her new hair colour looks very grown up and serious in comparison to her recent richer tones, but the soft waves make her look youthful.

‘Kate’s overall look is quite striking even though separate elements seem more reserved than we have seen lately.

‘The powdered foundation might be to hide the appearance of dark circles under her eyes. The only heavy part of Kate’s look is the application of eye make-up.

‘Black or very dark brown eyeliner and eye shadow has been applied heavily with subtle blending to soften out. Kate is wearing thick mascara and her brows are brushed up and coloured in for effect.

‘To help her brows and eyes stand out she has applied white or lighter eye make-up above the folds of the eyes. This is a classic trick to reflect the light and helps flatter the face.

Back to business: The Duchess of Cambridge’s hair was a single, darker shade of brown yesterday (seen above). Her skin was ‘fresh and rosy’ with just a touch of pink powder

Glamour girl: Kate, pictured in December, had been favouring more bronze, glowing makeup in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Now she is ready for a new year with a new look

‘Kate is only wearing a small amount of pink powdered blusher and her cheek bones look fresh and rosy.

‘Kate’s choices might be down to the daytime occasion as she may want to appear professional and natural looking – not too drastic or ‘overdone’ for the meeting.

‘Kate is wearing a face mask in some photos which could also be the reasoning behind her make-up choices as she doesn’t want too much transfer or smudging to occur.’

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a favourite pair of Jigsaw trousers for yesterday’s engagement with a blue coat from her wardrobe.

Kate Middleton appeared delighted to be on duty with Prince William as they undertook their first engagement of 2022 during a visit to the Foundling Museum in London this morning

A rare sign of PDA! Prince William and Kate shared a giggle as they left the engagement earlier this morning (pictured together)

The Duke and Duchess participated in a therapy session with individuals who have experienced the care system, during a visit to the Foundling Museum

The royal, who wore her brown locks down in a loose curly blow dry, added a touch of glam to her outfit with a dazzling pair of £7 earrings from Accessorize.

She and William wore face masks as they walked inside the building in accordance with the museum’s policy, which asks those visiting to wear a face covering.

The Duke and Duchess listened to the stories of those who have experienced life in care today, but William could not avoid the drama of his own family as a TV crew asked him ‘do you support Prince Andrew?’ as the couple left the museum.

William leaned closer to hear but then walked past without commenting.

Earlier the couple met adults who grew up without settled homes but had managed to turn their lives around at the London museum, which tells the history of the Foundling Hospital the UK’s first children’s charity founded in 1739 as a home for children whose mothers couldn’t keep or care for them.

The couple laughed as they spoke with Britain’s former track and field athlete Kriss Akabusi about his experience in the care sector (pictured)

Kate, who last year set up her Centre for Early Childhood, and William spoke with charity bosses who discussed homelessness, mental health impact and helping young people in care who fail or slip through the cracks.

Taking their seats, Kate asked the experts: ‘From your experience what makes the difference between a young person succeeding after leaving foster care and when they do not.’

They heard about ‘challenges for young people’ when they regularly move home and are sometimes exploited by the criminal world.

William added: ‘If you keep moving a child around when they are an adult their relationships are so short and shallow.’

Kate said she was concerned that without providing stable homes for children they risk being moved around and having to ‘tell their story again and again.’

The natural beauty kept her makeup to a minimum, with just a touch of blusher, nude-coloured lip and light layering of mascara (pictured)

William said: ‘That may become emotionally exhausting to tell the story again and again. We’ve had that in the mental health side of things, people end up on the street, go through hoops and hurdles, tell so many people in authority and nothing changes.

‘You have to get to them a lot earlier so they don’t have to keep doing this.’

The couple were said they also worried about the ‘consistency in care:’

Olympic athlete Kris Akabusi, poet Lemn Sissay, and Allan Jenkins, editor of Observer Food Monthly, told the Duke and Duchess their experiences of growing up in care.

Akabusi said: ‘I enjoyed the stability. It was a saviour for me’.

He said leaving care aged 16-years-old was ‘very traumatic’.

Kate replied: ‘You are petrified leaving for independence’. She asked the 400m hurdler if it had affected his relationships.

The royal couple wore masks as they walked through the Foundling Museum earlier today ahead of their roundtable with those who have experience of living in care

As the couple took their seats within the roundtable discussion, they could be seen sharing a laugh with other attendees at the engagement

Kris, with his distinctive laugh, replied: ‘Yes, but I am a loner.’

He added: ‘Now aged 63 there is no stigma attached when I say I was brought up in care but there was a stigma when I was 16.’

Women who had previously been in care then joined the couple in an ‘ice-breaker’ armed with three-foot long pencils.

They drew on a canvas what they could see in front of them without looking down at the floor.

Kate – who scored a master of arts degree in art history at St Andrews University – laughed out as she struggled with the artwork which had the look of a vast doodle when it was finished.

Meghan says UK royals raised concerns about son’s skin colour | Racism News

Couple, who moved to the US a year ago, lay bare their experiences of the British monarchy in interview with TV host Oprah Winfrey.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex and the wife of Britain’s Prince Harry said there were concerns about how dark her son Archie’s skin would be before his birth and that such worries explained why he was not given the title of prince.

Markle, whose mother is Black and father is white, said she was naive before she married into the British royal family in 2018, but that she ended up having suicidal thoughts and considering self-harm after asking for help but getting none.

“They didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what the gender would be, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security,” Markle said in an interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey that aired on broadcaster CBS late on Sunday in the United States, where she and Harry now live.

“In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘you won’t be given security, not gonna be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

She declined to say who had aired such concerns. Asked if she was silent or had been silenced, she replied: “The latter”.

The highly anticipated interview comes amid an acrimonious dispute between Markle and Harry on one side and the British monarchy on the other.

The couple, who married in 2018, have stepped down from their royal duties and are now living in California.

Their critics accuse them of wanting all the glamour of their positions without the dedication it requires or scrutiny it brings.

To their supporters, their treatment shows how an outdated British institution has lashed out against a modern, biracial woman, with undertones of racism. That accusation is likely to gather momentum in light of Markle’s comments about her son.

There have also been allegations of bullying against Markle which first appeared in The Times newspaper in the buildup to the interview.

Buckingham Palace, which did not comment on the interview, in an unprecedented move said it would investigate the bullying claims, adding it was “very concerned”.

In response to the report, a spokeswoman for Markle said she was “saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself.”

‘Turning point’

Markle said people within the royal institution not only failed to protect her against malicious claims but lied to protect others.

“It was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected but that they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family,” Markle said.

“There’s the family and then there’s the people that are running the institution, those are two separate things and it’s important to be able to compartmentalise that because the queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me.”

Markle denied a newspaper story that she had made Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William’s wife, cry before the wedding and said it was a turning point in her relations with the media.

“That was a turning point,” Markle said. Asked if she made Middleton cry, Markle replied: “The reverse happened.”

“A few days before the wedding she (Kate) was upset about something, pertaining to yes the issue was correct about the flower girl dresses, and it made me cry. And it really hurt my feelings,” Markle said.

Markle told Winfrey she had been naive before her wedding and did not realise what she was marrying into when she joined the British royal family.

“I will say I went into it naively because I didn’t grow up knowing much about the royal family,” Markle said.
