Report: La’el Collins tore his ACL and MCL

Getty Images

Bengals right tackle La’el Collins said on Saturday that he believed he avoided a serious knee injury during Cincinnati’s win over the Patriots, but he was set for an MRI to confirm the initial belief that his ACL was intact.

The MRI reportedly delivered bad news. Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that testing showed Collins tore both his ACL and MCL. He will miss the rest of the season and his rehab will could extend into training camp and the early part of next season.

Collins joined the Bengals after getting released by the Cowboys this offseason. He started all 15 games this season.

Hakeem Adenjii took over for Collins on Saturday and will likely be their starter for their remaining contests.

La’el Collins Injury: Bengals RT dislocated his kneecap vs Patriots

UPDATE 2

Following the Bengals’ scorigami win over the Patriots, right tackle La’el Collins revealed his injury was a dislocated kneecap that was eventually popped back into place.

Collins believes if he misses time, it will just be the Week 17 matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

Ironically, fellow Bengals tackle Jonah Williams suffered the same injury in Week 5 vs. the Baltimore Ravens and actually returned to play in the same game.

There will be more testing done to determine if there’s any other damage, but it appears Collins’ season is not over.

In the meantime, expect Hakeem Adeniji to be the Bengals’ starting right tackle until Collins is healthy enough to play again.

UPDATE

For the time being, it looks like La’el Collins avoided an ACL tear, according to Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Kelsey Conway.

The Cincinnati Bengals will be without La’el Collins for the rest of their game against the New England Patriots. The first-year Bengal had his leg rolled up on by a defender and instantly trainers were called onto the field by players from both sides.

While he was initially able to walk off the field with the assistance from two trainers, he was later carted from the medical tent to the locker room.

Now, the Bengals have declared him OUT of the game with a left leg injury.

Collins will be replaced at right tackle with Hakeem Adeniji, who has played a handful of snaps each game as a sixth offensive lineman. He has also replaced Collins sparingly during the season.

This starting offensive line unit had the most snaps together of any unit in the NFL, but we will have to see if this disruption has a serious impact on that continuity they had going.

We will update this story if more details become available.

Hawks talk John Collins deals, Suns show interest as trade market begins to take shape: Shams’ Inside Pass

NBA teams are just about one month from a marquee date on the trade market calendar, Dec. 15, and front-office executives are monitoring the buyers, sellers and available players. As The Athletic’s Sam Amick and John Hollinger have recently written, the early season’s strong play by the Utah Jazz and other surprising starts by rebuilding franchises like the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs are a far cry from the tanking many clamored about during training camp. As always, the buyers and sellers will reveal themselves as the season goes on.

Across the league, multiple teams are tracking the Phoenix Suns in the trade market as they work to find a home for disgruntled forward Jae Crowder. The Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks have been engaged with the Suns on a potential Crowder deal in recent weeks and months, but recently there’s been a new wrinkle across the trade landscape.

The Hawks have opened up preliminary trade discussions around forward John Collins, as interested teams inquire, league sources tell The Athletic. The Suns are a team showing desire in Collins, those sources have added, but they appear uninclined to take on the long-term money of Collins, who is in the second season of a five-year, $125 million contract. The Hawks don’t have an imminent deal in place involving Collins, those sources say, and executives around the league believe a potential deal will be weeks and potentially months in the making ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

The Suns have a handful of first-rounders to move, but given the team’s impending ownership change, it’s also uncertain how many future assets the current regime can move. In addition, the Suns expressed interest in forwards such as Sacramento’s Harrison Barnes, Washington’s Kyle Kuzma and Houston’s KJ Martin, league sources have said.

The Suns engaged in rookie extension negotiations with Cam Johnson prior to the regular season, with a final offer of four years in the range of $66 million, sources say. Phoenix refused to move higher toward the figure Johnson had desired. He is currently sidelined after undergoing surgery to remove part of his right meniscus.

“Negotiations are interesting, especially when ownership is unclear,” Johnson said when the extension deadline expired without a deal. The Suns’ valuable starting forward will now enter restricted free agency in July as one of the most versatile and sought after players in the open market.

The inclusion of Collins in the trade talks is not uncommon. For several years now, the Hawks have had a bevy of suitors for Collins, who has established himself as a highflying impact talent in the frontcourt. Collins battled through multiple hand and foot injuries last season, and after an offseason of trade chatter, returned to the organization with a new All-Star backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

Off to a 9-6 start, Atlanta has the ability to be judicious in its approach to discussions from interested parties. So far this season, Collins is averaging 12.6 points (the lowest since his rookie season in 2017-18) and a career-low 22.7 percent 3-point range to go along with 7.7 rebounds per game.

Knicks willing to move guards

The Knicks have shown a willingness to discuss Derrick Rose and Immanuel Quickley in trade talks, league sources say, as a way to sort out the team’s glut at the guard position over the course of the season.

76ers officials have begun their usual check-ins with teams across the league ahead of the Dec. 15 date for players who signed contracts in the offseason to be traded, when trade talks begin to intensify. Philadelphia’s Tobias Harris has come up in the 76ers’ conversations with clubs so far, league sources said.

In his 12th NBA season, Harris has adapted to a new role and has been regarded as a model teammate and leader for the 76ers. He’s averaged 14.7 points and 6.2 rebounds while attempting 12.1 field goals per game — the lowest since his 2015-16 season in Orlando.

Landon Collins, New York Giants finalizing deal, sources say

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Versatile veteran Landon Collins is returning to the New York Giants, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

Collins is being signed to the team’s practice squad to start, with the expectation that he could be used in a variety of roles in coordinator Wink Martindale’s aggressive defense.

The Giants’ second-round pick in 2015 has played both safety and, in recent years, linebacker. He spent the previous three seasons in Washington.

Collins’ career started promisingly for the Giants. He finished third in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting in the 2016 season, when he had 125 tackles, 4.0 sacks and 5 interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown the last time New York played in London.

The Giants (3-1) return to London this week and will play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Collins is expected to meet the Giants overseas, a source confirmed to ESPN.

NFL reporter Josina Anderson first reported that Collins and the Giants were finalizing a deal.

New York has now added veteran linebackers Jaylon Smith, A.J. Klein and Collins in recent weeks. Smith was elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s 20-12 win over the Chicago Bears and had six tackles. Klein was signed Thursday off the Giants practice squad, a source told ESPN, and Collins will take his spot.

Collins had been a free agent after not being able to agree on a restructured contract with the Commanders in the offseason.

Washington signed Collins to a six-year contract worth $84 million in the 2019 offseason after four seasons with the Giants. He had three years left on his contract at the time of his release. Washington altered Collins’ role early last season, using him in a hybrid safety/linebacker role. That change coincided with improved play by the Commanders’ defense. He finished last season with 81 tackles, 2 interceptions and 3 sacks.

Injuries disrupted his last two seasons with Washington. He ruptured an Achilles in Week 7 of 2020, and he missed four games with injuries last season. He was placed on injured reserve for the final three games because of a foot injury.

Collins, who turned 28 in January, made three Pro Bowls with the Giants and was a first-team All Pro in 2016. He did not make a Pro Bowl with Washington.

In seven seasons, Collins has 11 interceptions, 10 sacks, 676 tackles and 7 forced fumbles.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and John Keim contributed to this report.

Georgia Tech fires Geoff Collins after 1-3 start to fourth season, AD also ousted amid upheaval, per report

Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins and athletic director Todd Stansbury were fired on Monday, just two days after a 27-10 road loss to UCF sent the Yellow Jackets to 1-3 in Collins’ fourth season. The two were informed of the decision by school president Angel Cabrera, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Collins is expected to receive a buyout in the range of $11.3 million, according to ESPN. Associate head coach Brent Key will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season, according to The Athletic.

The loss sent Collins to 10-28 (7-19 ACC) at GT with the program struggling to show any improvement during his tenure. Stansbury had served as AD for Georgia Tech since 2016 following previous stints at Oregon State and UCF.

Upon being hired away from Temple, Collins faced a difficult task: Moving Georgia Tech’s offense away from the option-based attack that Paul Johnson installed during his 11-year run with the program. That provided Collins with some leeway; however, the Jackets never finished better than 10th in the ACC in total offense while winning just three games in each of his first three campaigns, and they struggled mightily to start the 2022 season.

This past offseason saw a wave of transfer portal action with Georgia Tech losing multiple key players, including star running back Jahmyr Gibbs to Alabama, while bringing in contributors to help bolster the roster in a must-improve season for Collins. However, in its three games against FBS opponents (Clemson, Ole Miss, UCF), Georgia Tech has been outscored 110-20.

Collins is the third Power Five coach who has been fired in the first month of the 2022 season after Nebraska rid itself of Scott Frost and Arizona State parted with Herm Edwards. Both Frost and Edwards were in their fifth years with their respective programs.

A failed strategy

When Collins came to Georgia Tech, he saw recruits leaving the city of Atlanta as perhaps the most existential issue facing the program. He spruced up the program by bringing the city to the forefront and embracing Atlanta staples like the “404” area code and Waffle House. It brought some success as 30 of the 53 recruits he signed were from Georgia.

Unfortunately, few of his players ended up reaching their potential under his tutelage. The Yellow Jackets landed just two All-ACC players in 2021. Both left as Gibbs transferred and Quez Jackson graduated. Tech ranks bottom-two in the ACC in offense, defense, scoring offense, scoring defense and even field goal kicking. Trying to provide some wins on the recruiting trail was nice, but the program has bottomed out under Collins’ leadership.

Is an investment coming?

One of the biggest benefits of the Johnson option era is that it allowed Georgia Tech to take a backseat on the recruiting trail. Especially in the rough-and-tumble Southeast, the Jackets’ lack of investment sticks out like a sore thumb. Georgia Tech spent $27.2 million on football-specific expenses during the 2019-20 academic year, per Sportico. That ranked the Jackets 40th among public institutions, a spot behind Kansas State and sixth out of eight public schools in the ACC. For comparison, rival Georgia spend $48.5 million a year on football on the books.

Collins failed to convert sizzle into steak during his four years at Georgia Tech. The administration must decide what it wants its football program to be long term, and what it is willing to invest in the program to make it happen — especially in an era where every Power Five team outside the Big Ten and SEC is existentially on the chopping block.

Coaching carousel keeps spinning

There were plenty of questions about how the early signing period and transfer portal would transform the coaching cycle. Two years in, the ride is spinning faster than ever. Just four weeks into the season, three Power Five programs have already made changes. Last year, LSU and USC both fired coaches before October, as did UConn and Georgia Southern. Amazingly, Georgia Southern and Texas Tech both fired coaches and hired external full-time replacements before the season even ended.

Players only have four years of eligibility to make their mark on college football, but programs are waving the white flag on seasons earlier than ever. It will be interesting to see whether all this movement ultimately leads to some guardrails to avoid tanking the limited collegiate careers of countless college football players.

Georgia Tech coaching candidates: Deion Sanders, Todd Monken lead options to replace Geoff Collins

Geoff Collins had it all: money, a future and a plan at Georgia Tech. A Star Wars nerd, he planned to weaponize recruiting in the Atlanta region for little ol’ Georgia Tech. Except … none of it came to fruition. Instead, the Yellow Jackets floundered following the exit of 11-year stalwart Paul Johnson, and moving on from the triple option was only the least of Collins’ problems as he attempted to turnaround the program.

There was a time when Georgia Tech was considered prime expansion territory for the Big Ten. Not anymore. GT became punchless on offense, Collins never matched the promise he developed as a defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and Florida, and after a 1-3 start in his fourth season (10-28 overall) with no better than three wins in his prior campaigns, he got shown the door.

Let’s take a look at the top candidates to replace Collins in Atlanta.

Deion Sanders, Jackson State coach: Coach Prime might actually work in a crowded media market where Deion was adored as a member of the Falcons and Braves. After a 4-3 record in his first COVID-19 shortened season with the Tigers, Coach Prime led Jackson State to an 11-2 record (9-0 SWAC) in his second campaign. The Tigers are 4-0 to start 2022 while outscoring opponents 190-37. It makes too much sense.

Shawn Clark, Appalachian State coach: Being a Sun Belt coach potentially stepping up to the Power Five level would be a concern as Scott Satterfield is already struggling at Louisville. But Clark’s energy is undeniable, and it’s clear he has the Mountaineers buying into his philosophy.

Todd Monken, Georgia offensive coordinator: Monken was last mentioned in this space a week ago when Arizona State fired Herm Edwards. He has developed Stetson Bennett, won a national championship and sure as heck knows what’s wrong with Tech. He game plans against them each season.

Tyson Helton, Western Kentucky coach: This offensive mind is ready to make the leap to a moribund program. Clay’s brother is 26-17 in four seasons leading the Hilltoppers. The Gainesville, Florida, product who has coached at UAB and Tennessee, he has a lot of experience in the surrounding area.

Jamey Chadwell, Coastal Carolina coach: If Chadwell does not snag one of the top available jobs this cycle, it will be legitimate to ask whether he waited to long to make the jump. He’s not Brent Venables, after all. His success with the Chanticleers is undeniable taking the program from 8-16 across his first two campaigns to 25-3 over his last three seasons.

Andy Kotelnicki, Kansas offensive coordinator: Lance Leipold is going to hate me for including him, but Kotelnicki is a chess master with innovative set pieces. He’d kill overseeing the whole show at a Power Five program in a recruiting hotbed.
