Economic optimism has ‘collapsed’ globally, survey finds
The latest annual survey from global communications firm Edelman found people’s hopes for their financial futures suffered a “massive collapse” worldwide over the past year, with most developed nations seeing economic optimism hit all-time lows.
The 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer released Sunday found that citizens in half the countries surveyed had year-over-year double-digit declines in the belief that their families would be better off in five years.
“The biggest story is the loss of economic optimism over the last year, even through the pandemic,” Edelman CEO Richard Edelman told FOX Business in an interview, calling the drop “significant.”
ALMOST HALF OF EUROPEAN UNION POPULATION REPORTS THEIR STANDARD OF LIVING HAS DECLINED, SURVEY FINDS
Edelman has conducted its Trust Barometer providing key insights for employers since 2000. In this year’s poll, economic optimism in 24 of the 28 countries surveyed fell to record lows, including the U.S. (36%), U.K. (23%), Germany (15%) and Japan (9%).
Not a single developed country has economic optimism above 35%.
IMF CHIEF EXPECTS TO KEEP 2023 GLOBAL GROWTH FORECAST STEADY
Economic anxieties were cited among respondents’ top fears, with 89% saying they were worried about job loss, and 74% citing inflation. Sixty-seven percent expressed concern about food shortages, and 66% said they were worried about energy shortages.
Edelman called the situation “dire,” saying he believes new concerns have been added over the last 12 months on top of standard worries people have expressed in past years such as losing their jobs to machines or the impact of climate change.

His wife, Cindy Blackman, shared an update the next day, writing, “Please know that he’s resting and doing very well! And Vasquez’s bodyguard got involved by taking off his Apple watch to check the passenger’s heart rate.
Luckily a surgeon was also on board the flight and they came over to take over from Vasquez.
A flight attendant then hailed her ‘wonder woman’ and gave her two bottles of alcohol – Merlot and champagne.
The plane then turned back to Los Angeles, where medics were waiting to take care of the passenger.
He was said to be conscious by the time the plane landed and EMTs escorted him off the plane.
Vasquez, 37, gained a celebrity status of her own since she defended Depp, 59, to victory in the blockbuster defamation trial against Amber Heard, 36,.
It comes the day before Depp’s team and Amber Heard’s lawyers sit down to thrash out the final details of his $8million defamation win against the actress.
If they can’t find an agreement tomorrow, trial Judge Penney Azcarate will file the jury’s June 1 verdict and Depp and Heard will have to pay each other their ordered damages.

Both celebrities were found to have defamed each other in the June verdict, but the cards fell considerably in Depp’s favor.
He was awarded $10.35million in damages from Heard, while she was awarded just $2million in damages from Depp. All told, Heard was left owing Depp a whopping $8.35million.
Heard later admitted through her lawyer that she couldn’t afford those millions in damages, and a day after the verdict her representation said that she would appeal the verdict.
Her tune on the matter has been mixed since then, however, with reports swirling that she plans to write a ‘tell-all’ book to earn money to pay the damages.

A source close to Heard claimed she was ‘broke’ and not ‘in a position to turn down money.’
They said she ‘considers her career in Hollywood over’ and ‘has nothing to lose’ following a disastrous few months.
An attorney for Depp, Benjamin Chew, indicated that there could be a settlement option on the table.
Speaking on Good Morning America earlier this month, Chew said that Depp might agree to waive the damages against Heard in return for her not appealing the case.
‘We obviously can’t disclose any attorney-client communications, but as Mr. Depp testified, and as we both made clear in our respective closings, this was never about money for Mr. Depp,’ said Chew.
‘This was about restoring his reputation, and he’s done that.’
Philadelphia firefighter died in building that collapsed; 5 other people rescued
Four of his comrades and a city worker were pulled alive from the rubble, a fire official said.
The collapse of 300 W. Indiana Ave. in the city’s Fairhill neighborhood came shortly before 3:30 a.m., — about 90 minutes after firefighters were called to fight the fire there — and sent colleagues scrambling to rescue those trapped inside, 1st Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said.
“Our department lost a member bravely fighting a fire and then caught in a building collapse after the fire was over,” he said.
“We just finished up pulling … our brothers out of this place. It’s going to be a rough few weeks coming up,” Murphy told reporters Saturday morning.
Four firefighters and a city licensing and inspections worker were rescued and sent to a hospital. The licensing worker was released, and the four firefighters remained hospitalized Saturday morning in stable condition, Murphy said.
Williamson was “one of our most experienced lieutenants,” Fire Commissioner Adam K. Thiel said during a briefing.
“I’m almost speechless,” Thiel said. “I’m not done crying.”
Officials identified the five others injured as Fire Marshal Lt. Sylvester Burton; Lt. Clarence Johnson; firefighter Dennis Daly; firefighter Robert Brennan, Jr.; and Thomas Rybakowski, a supervisor with the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections.
The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze with help from the ATF, the release said. No cause has yet been determined, it added.
A search and rescue operation after a blaze
Firefighters were called to the building at 1:53 a.m. because of a box alarm and found a fire, which they put out, Murphy said.
As firefighters focused on displaced residents and “overhaul” — looking for remaining fire in concealed spaces — the building collapsed, Murphy said. Eight occupants of the property were safely evacuated, the city’s news release said.
One person jumped from the second floor to avoid getting trapped. Others were pulled out systematically, Murphy said.
During rescue efforts, rescuers had “dialogue” with those trapped, including tapping on the debris “so somebody could know that somebody was in there,” Murphy said.
Three firefighters and the inspector were initially trapped but rescued and taken to the hospital, the news release said.
This was a “lean-to/pancake collapse,” Murphy said, in that while some collapsed material might have fallen flat on a surface, other material might have leaned against a wall, creating space. “There were a lot of void spaces,” Murphy said.
Williamson was one of two fire department members who were trapped under debris after the collapse, the city’s news release said. He was pronounced deceased on the scene at roughly 6:45 a.m., officials said.
The other member, Brennan, was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, the release said.
The fire response for the building’s collapse was placed under control shortly after 7:10 a.m., it added.
