JACKSON TWP., New Jersey (WPVI) — Five people were taken to an area hospital after an incident at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey.

Officials with Six Flags say several guests reported back pain after riding the roller coaster Thursday evening.

Five guests were taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

Video shows crews using flashlights on the tracks of the ride.

Six Flags did not indicate what happened but said the ride is closed for inspection.

WTO strikes global trade deals after ‘roller coaster’ talks

  • Deals reached on food, health and fishing
  • Formerly defiant India joins consensus
  • Package seen boosting credibility of WTO

GENEVA, June 17 (Reuters) – The World Trade Organization agreed the first change to global trading rules in years on Friday as well as a deal to boost the supply of COVID-19 vaccines in a series of pledges that were heavy on compromise.

The deals were forged in the early hours of the sixth day of a conference of more than 100 trade ministers that was seen as a test of the ability of nations to strike multilateral trade deals amid geopolitical tensions heightened by the Ukraine war.

Delegates, who had expected a four-day conference, cheered after they passed seven agreements and declarations just before dawn on Friday.

Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told them: “The package of agreements you have reached will make a difference to the lives of people around the world. The outcomes demonstrate that the WTO is in fact capable of responding to emergencies of our time.”

Earlier she had appealed to WTO members to consider the “delicate balance” required after nearly round-the-clock talks that have at times been charged with anger and accusations.

The package, which the WTO chief called “unprecedented”, included the two highest profile deals under consideration – on fisheries and on a partial waiver of intellectual property (IP) rights for COVID-19 vaccines.

The accord to curb fishing subsidies is only the second multilateral agreement setting new global trading rules struck in the WTO’s 27-year history and is far more ambitious than the first, which was designed to cut red tape.

At one stage, a series of demands from India, which sees itself as the champion of poor farmers and fishermen as well as developing countries, appeared set to paralyse talks but accommodations were found, trade sources said.

The WTO’s rules dictate that all decisions are taken by consensus, with any single member able to exercise a veto.

‘LOT OF BUMPS’

“It was not an easy process. There were a lot of bumps, just like I predicted. It was like a roller coaster, but in the end we got there,” an exhausted but elated Okonjo-Iweala told a final news conference.

The deal to ban subsidies for illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing or fishing of an over-fished stock has the potential to reverse collapsing fish stocks. Though pared back significantly, it still drew approval.

“This is a turning point in addressing one of the key drivers of global over-fishing.” said Isabel Jarrett, manager of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ campaign to reduce harmful fisheries subsidies.

Okonjo-Iweala said it was the first step after 21 years of talks towards what she hoped would be a more comprehensive deal.

The deal on a partial IP waiver to allow developing countries to produce and export COVID-19 vaccines has divided the WTO for nearly two years, but finally passed. It has also drawn the fiercest criticism from campaign groups that say it barely expands on an existing exemption in WTO rules and is too narrow by not covering therapeutics and diagnostics.

“Put simply, it is a technocratic fudge aimed at saving reputations, not lives,” said Max Lawson, co-chair of the People’s Vaccine Alliance.

One agreement also reached was to maintain a moratorium on e-commerce tariffs, which business says is vital to allow the free flow of data worldwide. read more

Overall, many observers said the deals should boost the credibility of the WTO, which was weakened by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s crippling of its ability to intervene in trade disputes, and set it on a course for reform.

European Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said the WTO meeting had clinched outcomes of global significance despite unprecedented challenges.

“The profound divergences here amply confirm that a deep reform of the organisation is urgently needed, across all its core functions,” he said, adding he would work to get it agreed at the next ministerial conference due in 2023.

Wonder Woman roller coaster coming to Six Flags Magic Mountain

Located in Southern California, Six Flags Magic Mountain already holds the record for most roller coasters in an amusement park, with 19 coasters to choose from. A new Wonder Woman coaster will increase that count next year to a nice even 20, joining other DC rides such as Batman: The Ride, Superman: Escape from Krypton, and The Riddler’s Revenge.

“This is an historic milestone for our park as we introduce the latest addition to our unrivaled coaster dynasty, Wonder Woman Flight of Courage. Not only is this a record-breaking single-rail coaster, it brings Six Flags Magic Mountain’s coaster count to an unprecedented twenty, the most in the world,” said Park President Don McCoy in a press release.

The announcement comes right on time for Wonder Woman Day — and the 80th anniversary of the iconic superheroine’s debut. Wonder Woman Flight of Courage will join the park’s DC-themed area in the summer of 2022. The new coaster will be the world’s tallest, fastest single-rail coaster, sweeping riders up to 13 story heights, with three inversions at 58 miles-per-hour. The entrance area will be themed around Greek architecture, evoking the hidden island of Themyscira where Wonder Woman hails from.

UFC’s Jon Jones was on ’emotional roller coaster’ during domestic violence-related arrest

UFC fighter Jon Jones allegedly pulled a woman’s hair and head-butted a police car hours after one of his fights was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame last week.

An arrest report released Tuesday by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department lays out the sequence of events that led to Jones being arrested Friday morning on two charges: injuring or tampering with a vehicle (a felony) and misdemeanor battery domestic violence. Jones was released Friday evening on $8,000 bail and is due back in court on Oct. 26.

Jones was apprehended by police on the Las Vegas Strip just before 6 a.m. Friday. When he was taken into custody, the report states that Jones “became irate and smashed his head onto the front hood” of a police vehicle, causing a medium-sized dent and paint chipping. That led to the felony charge of injuring or tampering with a vehicle.

In an interview at the Caesars Palace resort, the woman involved in the incident told police that Jones was a “little” physical with her, touching the back of her head and pulling her hair. She said Jones did not hit her. However, police observed blood on the woman’s clothing and a bump on her lip with dried blood. She explained that her lips were really dry. Police also observed blood on the bed sheets in the hotel room, the report stated.

The woman, whom ESPN is not identifying, told police that Jones was aggressive with her, but not violent, per the report. He grabbed the back of her hair to prevent her from leaving the hotel room. Police observed the woman with a swollen lower lip and a red mark on her upper right cheek. The woman did not allow photos to be taken, nor did she agree to a voluntary statement or recording of the interview.

A Caesars security guard told police she encountered the woman, who broke into tears when asked if she was OK, according to the arrest report. The woman said she was afraid to go back to the room. She was taken to the security office.

According to the report, prior to being read his Miranda rights, Jones said the Las Vegas Metro PD would be facing a lawsuit for putting him in handcuffs on the biggest night of his life. After his rights were read, Jones “immediately burst into tears,” the report stated. The report described Jones as going through an “emotional roller coaster.”

Jones denied to police that he ever touched the woman and had a hard time remembering certain points of the night, per the report. After the interview, police said that Jones “stated jokingly that he would like to take us all on and see what we could do.” Jones, per the report, feinted like he was going to escape the handcuffs and fight the police officers. The officers told Jones that they were not joking around and that they would use a Taser on him if he continued with that behavior. Jones apologized, the report stated.

Jones, 34, has had several run-ins with the law and outside-the-cage issues, including several DUIs and a felony hit-and-run in 2015. Jones has also failed two drug tests during his MMA career.

Jones, who has never truly been beaten in the cage, is a longtime light heavyweight champion. He is in the midst of moving up to heavyweight to challenge for that division’s title. He has not fought since February 2020.

Jones took to social media on Tuesday, posting video of him bench pressing along with several written comments.

“I have way too much trauma to consume alcohol, my brain simply can’t handle it anymore,” his Instagram post said. “I will leave alcohol in my past forever.”

“Now is the time to work harder than ever.

“Turn this nightmare into the best thing to ever happen in my life.”

When asked about Jones’ arrest, UFC president Dana White said he would see how the fighter’s case plays out legally.

112 mph roller coaster closed for injuring riders

A “death-defying” roller coaster — capable of achieving a speed of 112 mph in 1.56 seconds — is under investigation for potentially causing serious injury to a number of passengers.

The Do-Dodonpa coaster at Fuji-Q Highland, at the foot of Mount Fuji in the Yamanashi prefecture of Japan, is now closed until further notice.

According to a statement obtained by CNN, four riders ages 30 to 50 have reported “bone-breaking” injuries that were sustained while on the ride between December 2020 and August 2021, including cervical and thoracic spine fractures.

“Currently, the causal relationship between injuries and amusement machines has not yet been confirmed,” the park’s statement read.

In an identical message, Sansei Technologies, Do-Dodonpa’s manufacturer, also said the “causal relationship between the injuries of passengers and the amusement machine … is not confirmed.”

Do-Dodonpa — also the name of a popular Japanese music genre of the 1960s and ’70s — stands up to 161-feet in the air at its loop and is assembled of 4,080 feet of track.

Fuji-Q triggered a government investigation when the park failed to submit regulatory reports regarding the injuries within a 30-day time limit set by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, according to the Mainichi. Park officials have maintained that Fuji-Q and Sensei’s own internal investigation determined that one of the victims, a woman in her 30s, was seated improperly, allegedly that she “might have been leaning forward during the ride.”

Similar incidents occurred in May and July 2021, but after finding no issue with their machinery, Do-Dodonpa’s designs and Fuji-Q decided the onus was on the passengers — not the coaster.

With the most recent incident, on Aug. 2, the park finally shut down the ride and reported all four injuries to the prefecture government.

Fuji-Q has a reputation for daring rides. In 2011, the park opened Takabisha, premiering as the steepest coaster in the world with a 138-foot vertical drop that nearly curves backward at a neck-craning 121 degrees.
