Elon Musk told he’s ‘100% wrong’ for claiming Twitter is the internet’s biggest click driver ‘by far’

Elon Musk tweeted Saturday that Twitter was the top generator of referrals to other websites.Adrees Latif/Reuters

  • Elon Musk claimed Twitter was “the biggest click driver on the internet by far” in a tweet Saturday.

  • The site’s new owner was widely mocked in the replies by users rejecting his claim.

  • Twitter generated 7.7% of referrals in January, with 74.1% for Facebook, per Datareportal.

Elon Musk was widely mocked after claiming that Twitter was the biggest driver of “clicks” to other websites on the internet “by far.”

In a tweet on Saturday, the new owner of Twitter suggested the platform was the biggest source of referrals to other websites. He was replying to an exchange discussing how little traffic came from Twitter, with author Matt Taibbi saying 10 minutes on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast was worth a year of tweets.

“Twitter drives a massive number of clicks to other websites/apps. Biggest click driver on the Internet by far,” Musk replied.

He then came under fire as users pointed out that Facebook was far and away the leading generator of traffic to other websites.

Tom Coates, a product developer, tweeted: “100% wrong. Embarrassingly wrong. I mean even if you ignore the search engines it’s wrong. I can feel your ad execs and partnerships people (if there are any left) shriveling up the more you type.”

Coates shared a study from Datereportal which suggested Twitter generated 7.7% of social media referrals across social media in January, a fraction of the 74.1% of clicks from Facebook.

In terms of all websites, Twitter ranked ninth for traffic, just above adult website Pornhub.

A 2016 study by data analytics site parse.ly cited by NiemanLab found the average news organisation generated just 1.5% of its traffic from Twitter, with the top 5% of publishers receiving 11% of their clicks from the platform.

Former Twitter employee Claire Díaz-Ortiz said the claim was false, and the company never sold itself to advertisers on clicks because it was well known they had far fewer than sites such as Facebook.

Musk is looking for ways to make Twitter profitable after saying last week the company was losing $4 million a day. He laid off about 3,700 Twitter staff following his $44 billion takeover to slash costs.

His first attempt to generate new revenue, the rollout of verification for $8, ended in farce as users wreaked havoc impersonating major figures like George Bush and Tony Blair, as well as companies such as Lockheed Martin and Eli Lilly.

Musk has since reportedly touted the idea of putting the whole website behind a paywall, and has already floated the possibility of bankruptcy in his first meeting with Twitter employees.

Nobel prize goes to pioneers of Lego-like “click chemistry”

  • Danish winner Meldal says click-chemistry like Lego
  • Technology has been used for targeting cancer treatment
  • Prize worth more than $900,000

STOCKHOLM, Oct 5 (Reuters) – Scientists Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and Barry Sharpless won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on Wednesday for discovering reactions that let molecules snap together to create new compounds and that offer insight into cell biology.

The field of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry has been harnessed to improve the targeting of cancer pharmaceuticals now being tested in clinical trials, along with a host of health, agricultural and industrial applications.

“Combining simple chemical building blocks makes it possible to create an almost endless variety of molecules,” the award-giving body said in a statement, adding that “sometimes simple answers are the best”.

Danish winner Medal described click chemistry as a way to build complex structures and link them as if they were pieces of Lego, the plastic construction toy.

The technology is employed globally to learn more about cells and track biological processes. It also allows assembly in the lab of stable molecules without creating undesirable by-products that had hobbled older methods.

Sharpless joins an elite band of scientists who have won two Nobel prizes. The other individuals are John Bardeen who won the Physics prize twice, Marie Curie, who won Physics and Chemistry, Linus Pauling who won Chemistry and Peace and Frederick Sanger who won the Chemistry prize twice.

“I’m absolutely stunned, I’m sitting here and I can hardly breathe,” Bertozzi said from California after the academy reached her by telephone with the news she had won.

She added that as part of her work, she and her team managed to visualize and understand cell surface structures known as glycans, leading to a new idea in cancer immune therapy.

The academy said the laureates’ discoveries had been used far beyond oncology, enabling products such as antimicrobials, herbicides, diagnostic tests, corrosion retardants and brightening agents.

Bertozzi works at Stanford University, Sharpless works at the Scripps Research institute, both in California, while Meldal is at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Meldal told Reuters his legs and body started shaking with excitement when the Nobel committee called.

“It is not every day to have a Dane get the Nobel Prize,” he said, adding he had been recording a teaching video when he received the news and that he was very proud on behalf of his colleagues and team.

The third of the prizes unveiled over six consecutive weekdays, the chemistry Nobel follows those for medicine and physics announced earlier this week.

The 2021 chemistry award was won by German Benjamin List and Scottish-born David MacMillan for their work in creating new tools to build molecules, aiding in the development of new drugs as well as in areas such as plastics.

The prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were established in the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, himself a chemist, and have been awarded since 1901. Economics was added later.

The prizes have been awarded every year with a few interruptions, primarily for the world wars, and made no break for the COVID-19 pandemic though much of the pageantry and events were put on hold or temporarily moved online.

Google Authenticator on Android removes ‘Click to reveal’

At the end of May, Google Authenticator received its first update in a year that hid your 2FA codes until you clicked to reveal them. An update to Authenticator this week sees Google backtrack on that feature.

Version 5.20R4 of Google Authenticator removes the “Click to reveal PIN” feature so that you immediately see every single two-factor authentication code in that list upon opening the app.

Click to reveal was presumably Google’s attempt to add another level of security by making it slightly harder for those in your physical proximity to glance at your phone’s screen and take something away. Then again, codes already change every 30 seconds so it’s not clear how effective a measure it ended up being. One unintended upside of this feature was how it helped focus you by only showing the code you want.

This update never made it to the iOS app, which can prompt you to authenticate Face/Touch ID before showing codes and would be a nice option to have on Android for shared device use cases.

Meanwhile, Google has updated Authenticator’s Play Store release notes to say that it “added device encryption to storage of secret values.” There are no other changes to the app and this latest version of Google Authenticator widely rolled out earlier this week.

Logitech’s new mouse and keyboard offer a quieter click and more clack, respectively

Logitech’s latest computer accessories offer a quieter or more tactile way to use your computer, depending on your preferences. The new MX Master 3S is a minor update to the existing MX Master 3 mouse with a quieter mouse click and a more sensitive sensor. Meanwhile, the MX Mechanical and MX Mechanical Mini are a pair of keyboards whose mechanical switches should make them a more tactile (if slightly louder) counterpart to its existing MX Keys devices. The MX Mechanical, MX Mechanical Mini, and MX Master 3S will ship this month for $169.99, $149.99, and $99, respectively.

The MX Master 3S is a very similar-looking device to the MX Master 3 that it’s replacing in Logitech’s lineup. It’s got an aggressively sculpted right-handed design, a pair of scroll wheels (one for up / down, the other for left / right), and a trio of thumb buttons. The big changes are that it now uses an 8,000 DPI sensor, up from 4,000 last time, and the left and right mouse buttons are now significantly quieter — 90 percent, according to Logitech. There’s still a tactile bump when you click the mouse, but it’s more muted, almost like pressing a Cherry MX Brown rather than an MX Blue switch.

Click.

Clack.
Image: Logitech

Despite the higher-resolution sensor, this is a mouse aimed firmly at office and productivity work rather than gaming thanks to its comparatively low polling rate of 125Hz. In contrast, gaming mice typically poll at 1,000Hz or even 8,000Hz in some cases.

Logitech says the MX Master 3S’s higher DPI sensor should help with the increasingly high-resolution displays, such as 4K and even 8K that people are using with their computers, while the quieter click should benefit anyone using the mouse in a shared office setting. Personally, I like the tactility of a louder click, but I see Logitech’s argument. The MX Master 3S will be replacing the MX Master 3 in Logitech’s mouse lineup, though, so fans of loud mouse clicks might have to act fast to grab one of the old models before they disappear.

While the MX Master 3S is aimed at users who prioritize quietness over tactility, the new MX Mechanical keyboards are doing the opposite. Previously, the keyboards in Logitech’s productivity-focused MX lineup — the MX Keys and MX Keys Mini — have had quiet, mushy-feeling laptop-style keys. But with the MX Mechanical, which will be sold alongside the MX Keys in the lineup, Logitech is using switches that are more, well, mechanical.

Specifically, they’re using Kailh’s Choc V2 switches, and available styles include tactile quiet brown switches, clicky blues, and linear reds. These switches are low-profile, so they don’t have that long travel of full-height Cherry MX switches. If you’re more familiar with the typing experience of a laptop keyboard, then you should feel right at home here. Although they’re low-profile, they come with some of the benefits of mechanical switches, which include a more tactile feel and greater reliability.

Both keyboards are wireless, and Logitech’s trademark lengthy battery life is in full force here. You get 15 days of battery life with the keyboard’s backlighting on or up to 10 months with it turned off. The keyboard is equipped with sensors so that its backlighting can turn on when your hands are nearby and a USB-C port handles recharging when power gets low. Both the keyboard and mouse can remember three devices they’re paired to (they can connect via Bluetooth or an included USB wireless adapter) and switch between them with the press of a button.

I’ve been using the MX Mechanical Mini and MX Master 3S for the past couple of days, and so far, I’ve been impressed with both as office productivity tools. Clearly neither is meant as a high-performance gaming peripheral but instead as a step-up option from the standard-issue keyboards and mice that many workers are using in their offices and homes. Stay tuned for my full thoughts later this week.

My iPhone saved my life – everyone needs to learn the ‘5 click’ trick

A Brit who plunged into a crevasse while snowboarding has told the incredible story of how his iPhone saved his life.

Tim Blakely, 41, was boarding 10,000 feet up a Swiss mountain off-piste and alone when he fell 15 feet down a hidden gap in the ice.

He would have dropped further and likely died had he not landed on a fragile snow bridge below.

Writing on Instagram on March 27, Tim described how his iPhone’s Emergency SOS feature came to his rescue.

Activated using a few quick button presses, the tool automatically calls the local emergency number and sends them your location.

“This past week has been a wave of emotions and introspection and I’ve not really known what to do with this experience,” Tim wrote.

“Thank you to @apple, their side button five click to emergency services – especially great when your screen is constantly being dripped on.”

Despite finding himself several feet below the surface of the ice, Tim said he still had a 3G connection.

His mobile was able to alert Swiss rescue services to his position even though he only had three percent of his battery power left.

It apparently took him 20 minutes to get hold of someone.

Tim said that he has now returned to London “relatively unharmed.”
Instagram/@mrtimblakey

They told him not to move and, following the call, the New Zealand-born adrenaline-junky gingerly took photos of what could have easily been his final resting place.

Forty-five minutes later, rescuers were able to haul the personal trainer out of the crevasse and he escaped the ordeal with only an injured ankle ligament.

Tim said that he has now returned to London “relatively unharmed”.

Tim said that his phone saved his life and the thought of not having access to it at the time has been “keeping me up at night”.

He advised others not to be so careless.

“Seventeen years snowboarding, and the majority of those times spending a lot of the time solo and off-piste. Never solo again.”

“No matter how experienced you think you are, it is no joke.”

“I was lured into a false sense of security which also led me to be very blasé about researching the areas I snowboard.”

He added: “It’s not fair to say ‘my luck ran out’ because the circumstances of my survival clearly show I’ve cashed in every last luck token at my disposal.”

How to make an SOS call on iPhone

After the call ends, your iPhone will ping the emergency service with your current location, unless you choose to cancel.

On iPhones without a Home Button.

  1. Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the Emergency SOS slider appears.
  2. Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services. If you continue to hold down the side button and Volume button, instead of dragging the slider, a countdown begins and an alert sounds.
  3. If you hold down the buttons until the countdown ends, your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.

On iPhone 7 or earlier:

  1. Rapidly press the side button five times. The Emergency SOS slider will appear.
  2. Drag the Emergency SOS slider to call emergency services.
  3. If you started an emergency call by accident, press the Stop button, then tap Stop Calling.

After the call ends, your iPhone will ping the emergency service with your current location, unless you choose to cancel.

If Location Services is off, it will temporarily turn on.

His mobile was able to alert Swiss rescue services to his position even though he only had three per cent of his battery power left.
Instagram/@mrtimblakey

If your location changes, your contacts will get an update, and you’ll get a notification about 10 minutes later.

To stop the updates, tap the status bar and select “Stop Sharing Emergency Location.”

If you keep sharing, you’ll get a reminder to stop every four hours for 24 hours.

James Harden’s passing has hit another level, and his scoring deference to Kyrie Irving is making Nets click

As the Brooklyn Nets were busy walloping the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, I was going back and forth in our NBA chat room with my editor, who at one point posed a question I hadn’t given much thought to: Why hasn’t James Harden received the same kind of vitriol for hopping on a superteam bandwagon that Kevin Durant did when he went to the Warriors?

It’s an interesting question. People went out of their way to pick bones with Harden while he was in Houston, where he was actually traveling the harder road, trying to slay the superteams, a seemingly admirable quest. It would stand to reason if he was that bright a target while battling the NBA behemoths, he would be an even brighter one when he joined them.

But it hasn’t worked out that way.

In fact, Harden — who posted a 29-point, 14-assist, 13-rebound triple-double in Brooklyn’s win over Sacramento on Monday — has become one of the more celebrated players in the league over the last month. Rightly so. He’s been brilliant with Brooklyn. But Durant was brilliant with Golden State, and four years later he’s still getting dragged for his decision, his back-to-back Finals MVPs treated by many as footnotes in a sellout NBA story.

The difference, of course, is Harden didn’t join a 73-win team that had already won a championship without him. When Durant joined the Warriors, barring injury, there was nothing that could go wrong. He was a near perfect player on a near perfect team. We don’t like certainty in our sports.

The Nets are not a perfect team, not even the title favorite in most people’s eyes, and it was no certainty Harden would fit. I would then posit, perhaps, that our collective fascination with all that could go wrong in Brooklyn — however ill-founded these concerns were — suppressed the typical annoyance we reserve for deck-stackers. How would all these moody dudes share one locker room, let alone one ball? Was defense even a consideration?

One month into the experiment, the defense is still a major question. Since Harden’s arrival, the Nets have the fourth-worst defensive rating in the league entering Monday. But the offense is magical. The “only one ball” crowd has been silenced by Harden, who has transitioned so naturally into a facilitator’s role that it makes you wonder how anyone could’ve ever questioned his capability, or willingness, to do so in the first place.

Sure, Harden was probably the most single-minded isolation scorer in NBA history with the Rockets, but if you think he wasn’t also one of the best passers in the world during that time, you weren’t paying attention. We’re sure to turn this Harden role shift into one of romantic sacrifice, and it’s true, Harden has been willing to swallow some of his scoring pride. But mostly it’s just what makes the most basketball sense.

Durant and Irving are better shooters, naturally suited to, and vastly experienced with, off-ball roles. Durant existed alongside Russell Westbrook in OKC, then Stephen Curry with Golden State. Irving played off LeBron James, then burned out in Boston because he could never quite master the delicate scoring-sharing balance.

Harden has taken that burden off Irving without completely compromising his own scoring aggression. He’s still scoring over 23 points a game. On Monday, he put up 29 points on 18 shots with Durant out. Irving got 22 shots for 40 points. This slight deference to Irving as a scorer is making Harden look like the generous hero in a way we could never look at him in Houston — even if Harden was only operating in accordance with the ethos of Daryl Morey, who built the Rockets in a way that demanded Harden function as a solo artist.

“I feel he’s been doing a great job of just managing the point guard role,” Irving said of Harden on Saturday. “We established that maybe four days ago. I just looked at him and said, ‘You’re the point guard, and I’m going to play shooting guard.’ And that was as simple as that.”

It really has felt that simple, but in truth this role clarity to which Irving is alluding, at least from the outside, was achieved a lot earlier than four (now six) days ago. Harden had 14 assists in his Brooklyn debut. In 15 games with Brooklyn, Harden’s had double-digit assists in all but two, and he’s averaging 12 dimes over that time.

Against the Warriors, Harden dished 16 assists while taking just 11 shots, hitting six of them, including five of his eight 3-pointers (one of the three misses was an end-of-quarter heave). It was the third time Harden has finished a game with more assists than shots attempted with the Nets. Meanwhile, Irving and Durant got up 36 shots. They combined for 43 points to Harden’s 19, while Harden led the team with a plus-28.

People love to talk about “chemistry” with newly formed teams. “It’s going to take time,” is the go-to line when a team fails to meet early expectations. But there’s been no need for such excuses with the Nets. Irving and Durant have been awesome all season, and Harden has enhanced their effectiveness rather than merely not interrupting it.

It’s not just about sacrificing shots, either. Yes, Harden is attempting eight fewer shots per game than he did last season in Houston, and 10 fewer than he took in 2018-19, but it hasn’t come at the cost of his scoring aggression. If he overdid the generosity, it would stunt his rhythm and the offense’s overall. but it’s his shot selection, and his overall decisiveness that’s proven most vital to Brooklyn’s offensive flow.

In short, Harden isn’t dominating possessions as extremely. He’s not dribbling the air out of the ball as his teammates grow roots watching him. With Houston, Harden would get into his bag and stay in there until he found something. In Brooklyn, he’s in and out, cognizant that over-creating in an environment rife with creators comes with diminishing returns, trimming his time of possession by nearly one second per touch from last season in Houston (a direct product of him dribbling less), which is a lot more than it sounds like.

As to Harden’s improved shot selection, we’re speaking mainly about his signature step-back 3-pointer. So far with Brooklyn, Harden is taking four of those shots per game, down considerably from the 7.2 step-back 3s he averaged per game from 2018-20 with the Rockets.

To be fair, Harden made that shot at solid rates in Houston (38 percent from 2018-20), but at similar volumes, it wouldn’t stand the efficiency test in Brooklyn with Durant and Irving attempts representing the opportunity cost — particularly, again, when you factor in all the time Harden tends to spend dribbling before launching that shot.

All of this is the quantifiable evidence of Harden’s commitment to change, which shouldn’t be a surprise. Consider the alternative: Harden comes into Brooklyn guns blazing while Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, who were scorching hot prior to his arrival, hang out on the side? Facilitating was always going to be Harden’s smartest path, not to mention the easiest path, to immediate acceptance, both on the team and in the public eye.

Suddenly, Harden feels like an entirely different player, an actual fun player to watch as his most aesthetic talent — his passing — is now on nightly display, a welcome departure from his often paint-drying possessions in Houston. And that, in my opinion, is the big reason why Harden has avoided the superteam-joining backlash. Because he’s shown humility. A willingness to operate outside his own terms.

Perhaps that never should’ve been questioned in the first place, but it was nonetheless. People truly believed that Harden had gotten so used to playing one way that he was incapable of adjusting at this point in his career. The fact that he had made that adjustment so effortlessly speaks to his incredible talent, which, absent all the negative talk, the masses are perhaps starting to fully appreciate.
