Manchester NH Homeless Encampment Being Cleared Today – NBC Boston

The City of Manchester, New Hampshire, began packing up and pushing out the homeless population from an encampment that’s been set up along a stretch of the city’s sidewalks Wednesday.

City workers showed up bright and early Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, a Hillsborough County Superior Court judge ruled the City of Manchester could move forward with its previously-announced plan to close the encampment on Manchester and Pine streets due to ongoing public health and safety concerns.

“This was kind of just sprung on us last minute,” said Ryan Monica, who has been living in the encampment. “You know, it’s just a sad life out here.”

“It’s a no brainer, I mean you don’t fight City Hall and win, and I get it,” added Dennis Higgins, who was a party to the failed injunction against the city.

Higgins argued this eviction should not have happened until three new shelters promised by Manchester officials are up and running.

“You could have waited a couple more weeks until those shelters were open,” he said. “What harm would that have been?”

The city says outreach teams began notifying people living in the area about 10 days ago that the city planned to clear out and clean up the encampment. They say nonprofit and faith-based partners have been working with city officials since then, conducting daily outreach, connecting the homeless living here to shelters, storage for belongings and other resources.

Autumn Kostrzba, who’s also been living at the encampment said, “It’s hard for people who haven’t been homeless to understand homelessness, you know, evicting homelessness is violence. By evicting us, it’s going to create more problems.”

“It’s not one solution that’s going to solve the whole problem. There’s so many things that have to happen,” Higgins said.

A nearby daycare owner, however, said the eviction is too little, too late for her business.

Kristine Larocque plans to close after dealing with months of drug use in the area, sexual activity, fights, public urination and even finding needles in their parking lot.

“We try to shield the kids as much as we can from the outgoing activity,” she said. “We close the curtains, we keep the windows closed, we’ve stopped bringing them on the playground because of the activity that we’re seeing in the street, the things that we’re hearing, the things that we’re finding in the playground.”

A day care owner in Manchester says she is closing her doors after 20 years because of a growing homeless encampment across the street.

The ACLU sent a statement urging the city to postpone the eviction. “While we are disappointed with the court’s decision, we continue to believe that any eviction is unconstitutional in the absence of the City providing a 24-hour place for unhoused people to sleep,” the statement said.

Many people who NBC10 Boston spoke with who were living in the encampment said they don’t know where they will be sleeping Wednesday night.

Jets QB Zach Wilson to start vs. Jaguars as Mike White not cleared

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are entrusting their fading playoff hopes to Zach Wilson, who will be the starting quarterback Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Coach Robert Saleh, who announced the decision Tuesday, made it sound like he didn’t have much of a choice. Mike White, who fractured ribs nine days ago and sat out Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions, wasn’t cleared by doctors, according to Saleh.

They haven’t ruled out White for the final two games, with Saleh calling it “a week-to-week evaluation.”

The Jets (7-7) have lost three straight and have only a 13% chance of making the playoffs, according to ESPN analytics. Their place in the standings likely will have an impact on next week’s choice at quarterback. If they’re still in contention and White is cleared for contact, it would set the stage for a major decision.

For now, Saleh is doing his best to rally around Wilson, who is coming off an uneven start against the Lions in a 20-17 loss.

“There are quarterbacks through the history of time that needed just a little bit longer to find their groove,” Saleh said. “So, when you see Zach, he’s got a lot of things you just can’t teach. You just can’t teach some of the stuff he does.

“For him, it’s just learning the timing and rhythm aspect of it, the intermediate passing game and finding that consistency for four quarters. When he’s in rhythm, and he is hitting on all cylinders, it’s pretty cool to watch.”

Wilson, who returned from a three-game benching to face Detroit, displayed the arm strength that made the Jets draft him second overall in 2021. He was “on fire” in the first half, Saleh said.

He passed for 317 yards and two touchdowns, but he missed several open receivers and threw a costly third-quarter interception. His off-target percentage (35.3) was a season high, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Overall, Wilson is 5-3 as the starter. In a wild quarterback year, the Jets also have started Joe Flacco (1-2) and White (1-2).

Chances are, the Jets would’ve continued with White, but that changed Dec. 11 when he got drilled in the ribs by Buffalo Bills linebacker Matt Milano.

Aware that White’s ribs were fractured, the Jets still wanted to play him last week, but made the surprising announcement last Friday that Wilson would start against the Lions. Saleh said White wasn’t cleared for contact by team or outside doctors.

That hasn’t changed, apparently.

“Everything for Mike is to give him the opportunity to seek second opinions and for him and his team to make sure all the boxes are being checked,” Saleh said. “From our vantage point as coaches, we’re allowing that process to happen. When everything aligns, then we make a decision.”

When he benched Wilson on Nov. 23, Saleh said his intent was to get Wilson back in the lineup before the end of the season — but not like this.

In other injury developments, star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams will be a game-time decision, with Saleh expressing optimism about his chances after missing last week.

Zach Wilson to start for Jets as Mike White not cleared for contact

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets made an unexpected quarterback change Friday, announcing that Mike White is out Sunday with an unspecified rib injury and that former starter Zach Wilson is back in the lineup.

White, who had said Thursday he had no doubt he would be ready to face the Detroit Lions at MetLife Stadium, wasn’t cleared for contact by team doctors, coach Robert Saleh said. White sought but failed to receive clearance from outside doctors, Saleh said.

White “exhausted every measure” in trying to find a doctor to give him the green light, Saleh said, adding, “That opinion will not change and it’s gotten to the point where we could drag this out to Sunday, but this is one of those deals we have to do what’s best for the player and protect the player from the player.”

The injury occurred Sunday on a crushing hit to the midsection by Buffalo Bills linebacker Matt Milano during the Jets’ 20-12 loss. White went to the locker room for an X-ray and was cleared by team doctors to return. He finished the game.

Saleh said as recently as Wednesday that the Jets (7-6) were “still working as if he’s playing this week,” never mentioning that White still had to be cleared for contact. There might have been some gamesmanship at play, keeping the Lions (6-7) in the dark as long as possible.

White was cleared for practice — he was a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday — but Saleh said they made “an organizational decision” Thursday night to make the change.

The Jets didn’t announce their quarterback plans beyond Sunday. White could return Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Saleh acknowledged it would be a “challenge” on a short week. White will be reevaluated Monday.

The Jets, in a playoff race for the first time since 2015, will turn to Wilson, who spent the past three games as the third string/inactive quarterback. He was elevated this week to QB2, replacing Joe Flacco. Saleh said that decision had been made last Friday, two days before White was injured.

White underwent a precautionary CT scan at a Buffalo-area hospital after the game before flying home with the team. Both White and the Jets have been evasive on the exact nature of the injury, with Saleh refusing to confirm or deny a fracture.

White said repeatedly throughout the week that he felt fine and was preparing to play.

“He’s not BS-ing,” Saleh said. “He feels fine. He can throw a ball fine. He’s not in pain. It’s a contact issue. If it was 7-on-7, he’d be out there playing. But it’s not.”

According to ESPN Analytics, a win over the Lions would give the Jets a 34% chance of making the playoffs. Their chances would drop to 14% with a loss.

The Jets had rallied around White in his three starts. They went 1-2 and averaged only 22 points per game, but he passed for 952 yards and was able to get every player involved. In all likelihood, he would have remained the starter for the rest of the season — or as long as the Jets stayed in contention — even though Saleh said his intent was to play Wilson again.

Now there is no choice.

“We feel very comfortable about Zach’s preparation as the first-string quarterback,” said Saleh, adding that Wilson has received “a normal workload” for a starter in practice and that he knew at the beginning of the week there was “a strong possibility” that Wilson would have to start.

Wilson has won five of seven starts but has only four touchdown passes, an NFL-worst 56% completion rate and only 183 passing yards per game. He was benched after a 77-yard performance against the New England Patriots on Nov. 20. After the game, he created a firestorm by refusing to take any accountability for a poor offensive outing. His comments irked many players, sources said. Three days later, an emotional Wilson apologized in front of the team.

The Jets described the benching as a “reset,” an opportunity for Wilson to sharpen his fundamentals without the pressure of having to prepare for an opponent.

“I definitely believe in myself,” Wilson said Wednesday when it was announced that he was elevated to No. 2. “Of course, I have all the confidence in the world — I think that’s how it should be — but you have to be able to prove that.”

The Jets also ruled out wide receiver Corey Davis (concussion). Star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf) missed practice for the third straight day, but the Jets didn’t declare him out, holding out hope he can play.

Zach Wilson to start for Jets as Mike White not cleared for contact

New York Jets team doctors are not clearing quarterback Mike White for contact ahead of Sunday’s game, meaning Zach Wilson will get the start against the Detroit Lions, coach Robert Saleh announced Friday.

White suffered an unspecified rib injury during Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills. He has wanted to play and practiced, but Jets doctors are not signing off to let him on the field.

“Mike White, who is an absolute warrior and has been doing everything he can this week to find another option to get him on the football field, to find someone who will clear him for contact, has exhausted every measure he can because he wants to be out there for his teammates,” Saleh said.

Therefore, Wilson, who has been inactive the past three weeks after being benched, is back as the Jets’ starter as they look to snap a two-game losing streak and keep their playoff hopes on track.

Saleh called it a “great opportunity” for Wilson to return to the starting role.

White was injured during the 20-12 loss to the Bills on a crushing hit by Buffalo linebacker Matt Milano. White twice left the game but returned to finish the contest, impressing teammates and coaches with his toughness, before going to a Buffalo-area hospital for a precautionary CT scan.

Saleh said the Jets would reevaluate White’s injury Monday but acknowledged it will be a short turnaround with New York hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.

Wide receiver Corey Davis (concussion) was also ruled out, while Saleh said defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf) remained 50-50 to play.

Earlier this week, Wilson had been moved up to the No. 2 quarterback spot behind White. Wilson said Wednesday that he still believed he was the Jets’ quarterback of the future.

“I definitely believe in myself,” Wilson said. “Of course, I have all the confidence in the world — I think that’s how it should be — but you have to be able to prove that.”

Prior to being benched, Wilson had gone 5-2 as the starter but had completed an NFL-worst 55.6% of his passes (105-for-189) with four touchdowns and five interceptions. White is 1-2 as the starter, completing 80 of 129 passes (62%) for 952 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.

According to ESPN Analytics, a win over the Lions would give the Jets a 34% chance of making the playoffs. Their chances would drop to 14% with a loss.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Christian Pulisic: USMNT star cleared to play on Saturday in round of 16 clash against the Netherlands

CNN
 —

The US Men’s National Team had good news for American fans on Friday, tweeting out from their official account that star player Christian Pulisic is “cleared to play” in the team’s round of 16 World Cup clash against the Netherlands on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter told the press that Pulisic was likely to play in the knockout stage match.

Pulisic was involved in a heavy collision with Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand as he scored the US’ winning goal on Tuesday, with the forward being sent to hospital during the game for what was initially described as an abdominal injury.

Pulisic revealed Thursday that he had suffered a “pelvic contusion” and Berhalter said the Chelsea forward is progressing well.

“We’re going to see him on the training field today [Friday], what I think [is] it looks pretty good so we’ll have to see him today on the pitch to get confirmation of that,” Berhalter told reporters.

A CNN crew was at US training on Friday and watched Pulisic and his teammates run through warm-up drills in preparation of the win-or-go-home duel with the Dutch.

The USMNT is looking to progress to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, but Berhalter said the team were not looking that far ahead.

“It’s literally one game at a time, one minute at a time,” he told reporters. “In this knockout stage anything makes the difference in the result, and you have to be patient.

“You also have to realize that it could be a 120-minute exercise and you have to plan your lineups and substitutions accordingly.”

Disney’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Cleared for December Release in China

Chinese authorities have notified

Walt Disney Co.

DIS -1.40%

that “Avatar: The Way Of Water” will be released in China on Dec. 16, the same day it is slated to be released globally, according to people familiar with the matter.

Executives at Disney and at movie-theater chains had been closely watching for a decision from Chinese censors on the movie, director

James Cameron

‘s sequel to the 2009 science- fiction epic. It will be distributed by Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.

“This is fantastic news for Disney, for

James Cameron

and for the movie, because the potential box office from China is enormous,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, said in an interview. “This may be the pivotal moment that indicates that ‘Way of Water’ will earn enough money to justify further installments of the Avatar franchise.”

The last seven superhero films produced by Marvel Studios, Disney’s most-profitable film studio over the past decade, haven’t received release dates in the crucial China market, denting the global box-office gross.

In July, for example, Disney cited the lack of a China release for “Thor: Love and Thunder,” the fourth solo film featuring Chris Hemsworth’s Thor character from the popular Avengers superhero team, as one reason the movie underperformed at the international box office.

Disney and other Hollywood studios have run up against Chinese censors in recent years, especially when their movies deal with sensitive political themes or when actors or directors make statements that Chinese authorities find objectionable.

Two recent Marvel films were blocked from release in China after comments that the Chinese government viewed as insulting, made by the director of one movie and a star actor of the other, were unearthed and circulated in the country.

While Disney hasn’t revealed the “Avatar” sequel’s budget, Mr. Cameron, the director, said in a recent interview in GQ magazine that the “Avatar” sequel was “the worst business case in movie history” and that it would have to be the third- or fourth-highest-grossing film in history just to break even. Disney has said that it plans to make five Avatar movies in total.

The first Avatar movie from 2009 grossed nearly $2.9 billion worldwide, with $259 million of that total coming from China, making it the highest-grossing movie of all time. It narrowly edged out Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” after a September 2022 rerelease of the movie added $73 million in ticket sales, according to Comscore, a box-office tracker.

It sparked a boom in multiplex construction in China, as Chinese audiences flocked to see the film in 3-D and government authorities sought to encourage consumers to spend more money in shopping centers.

Theaters saw lines for the first “Avatar” up to six hours long, and scalpers sold tickets for $100 apiece, according to

Richard Gelfond,

chief executive of the movie technology company

IMAX Corp.

In Beijing, Chinese authorities closed an IMAX theater so high- ranking party members could watch it at a private screening, he said. Before the 2009 movie, IMAX had 14 screens in China, but now has 800, with 200 more contracted to be built.

“Everything changed after ‘Avatar,’” Mr. Gelfond said. “It was really the match that lit the entire movie industry” in China.
