7,000 nurses on strike at 2 New York City hospitals

Comment

More than 7,000 nurses at two major New York hospitals walked off the job Monday morning, protesting pay and staffing arrangements they contend have overwhelmed health care professionals during the coronavirus pandemic and beyond.

Last-minute talks to avoid a work stoppage at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx broke down overnight, and the New York State Nurses Association rejected an earlier proposal by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) to take this dispute to binding arbitration.

Mount Sinai spokeswoman Lucia Lee said the union walked out of negotiations shortly after 1 a.m. Representatives from both hospitals said the union rejected the same nearly 20-percent wage increase proposal that nurses at peer institutions accepted in previous bargaining talks.

New York Mayor Eric Adams (D) in a statement urged all parties to “remain at the bargaining table for however long it takes to reach a voluntary agreement.”

Nursing unions across the country have pushed for staffing improvements since the start of the pandemic, citing burnout they contend has depleted patient care capabilities and placed health care professionals in harm’s way.

More than 400 nurses walked off the job at a Chicago hospital on Jan. 3, for a three-day strike after layoffs exacerbated staffing shortages. Nurses in Oakland and Berkeley, Calif., held a five-day strike beginning Christmas Eve. Another 400 health care workers — including nursing assistants, surgical technicians, pharmacists, dietitians and lab assistants — launched a five-day strike in Marina del Rey, Calif., on Dec. 12, over similar concerns.

New York nurses were able to reach agreements with seven other hospitals around a common bargaining framework. Nurses will get close to 20-percent salary increases over three years, and the hospitals agreed to improved staffing standards.

“Since [New York City] nurses started negotiating our contracts four months ago, we have said our number one issue is the crisis of chronic understaffing that harms patient care,” New York State Nurses Association President Nancy Hagans told reporters Friday. “Safe staffing is about having enough nurses to deliver safe, quality care to every patient. It is the issue that our employers have ignored, made excuses about, and fought against us on.”

Montefiore in statement said nurses “decided to walk away from the bedsides of the patients” in the strike, and said the work stoppage “will spark fear and uncertainty across our community.”

“Our first priority is the safety of our patients. We’re prepared to minimize disruption, and we encourage Mount Sinai nurses to continue providing the world-class care they’re known for, in spite of NYSNA’s strike,” Lee, the Mount Sinai spokeswoman, said in a statement.

The union in a post on Twitter said patients going to either hospital system “is NOT crossing our strike line.” It invited patients to join demonstrations after receiving care.

Nurses from New York City hospitals set to strike as contract negotiations stall

New York
CNN
 —

A walk-out by more than 7,000 nurses at two major New York City hospitals is set to begin at 6 a.m. ET Monday after talks aimed at averting a strike broke down overnight.

Tentative deals had been reached in recent days covering nurses at several hospitals, including two new agreements late Sunday evening. But talks with Mount Sinai hospital in Manhattan and Montefiore in the Bronx failed overnight.

“After bargaining late into the night at Montefiore and Mount Sinai Hospital yesterday, no tentative agreements were reached. Today, more than 7,000 nurses at two hospitals are on strike for fair contracts that improve patient care,” the New York State Nurses Association said in a Monday statement.

Both hospitals said earlier on Monday morning that efforts to reach an agreement were unsuccessful.

“NYSNA leadership walked out of negotiations shortly after 1 a.m. ET, refusing to accept the exact same 19.1% increased wage offer agreed to by eight other hospitals, including two other Mount Sinai Health System campuses, and disregarding the Governor’s solution to avoid a strike,” Lucia Lee, a spokesperson for Mount Sinai, said in a statement to CNN.

Montefiore said it was “a sad day for New York City.”

“Despite Montefiore’s offer of a 19.1% compounded wage increase — the same offer agreed to at the wealthiest of our peer institutions — and a commitment to create over 170 new nursing positions … NYSNA’s leadership has decided to walk away from the bedsides of their patients,” the medical center said in a statement.

The tentative deals reached at other hospitals provide nurses with a combined 19.1% in pay increases over the three-year life of the agreements and includes promises by management to increase staffing to address the union’s major complaint of nurses being overworked and facing burnout.

Mount Sinai and Montefiore said they had agreed to meet the wage demands of the union, but the union claimed that staffing levels remain the sticking point in reaching deals at the two remaining hospitals.

“We need management to come to the table and provide better staffing,” NYSNA President Nancy Hagans said in a press call Sunday afternoon.

According to Hagans, Montefiore has 760 nursing vacancies, adding that “too often one nurse in the emergency department is responsible for 20 patients instead of the standard of three patients.”

On Sunday evening, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul had urged the management and the union to agree to binding arbitration as a way of avoiding the strike. Although the management of the two hospitals embraced the idea, the union did not.

“We will not give up on our fight to ensure that our patients have enough nurses at the bedside,” the union said in response to Hochul’s arbitration suggestion.

New York Mayor Eric Adams had encouraged all parties on Sunday night to “remain at the bargaining table for however long it takes to reach a voluntary agreement.”

The hospitals have been preparing for a strike since the nurses union gave notice of its plans 10 days ago. The affected hospitals plan on paying temporary “traveling” nurses to fill in where possible and some had already begun transferring patients.

Montefiore released a notice to staff, obtained by CNN, telling nurses how to quit the union and stay on the job if they wanted to continue to care for their patients.

Mount Sinai, which operates two hospitals that reached deals Sunday evening in addition to the one still facing a strike, started transferring infants in the neonatal intensive care unit at the end of this past week. Hospitals facing the possibility of strikes had already taken steps to postpone some elective procedures.

The union says the hospitals will be spending more on hiring temporary nurses at a significantly greater cost. It argues the hospitals should agree to their demands to hire more staff and grant the raises the union is seeking.

“As nurses, our top concern is patient safety,” Hagans said in a statement Friday. “Yet nurses … have been forced to work without enough staff, stretched to our breaking point, sometimes with one nurse in the Emergency Department responsible for 20 patients. That’s not safe for nurses or our patients.”

The hospitals say they are doing what they can to hire more nursing staff.

“Mount Sinai is dismayed by NYSNA’s reckless actions,” Mount Sinai said in a statement Friday. “The union is jeopardizing patients’ care, and it’s forcing valued Mount Sinai nurses to choose between their dedication to patient care and their own livelihoods.”

Nurses at the first hospital to reach a tentative deal, New York-Presbyterian, voted on Saturday. It was a close call with 57% of nurses voting yes and 43% against. The tentative deals reached over the last few days still need to be ratified by rank-and-file union members before they can take effect.

Strikes have become more common nationwide, as tight labor markets and unhappiness with work conditions have prompted unionized employees to flex their muscles more often at the bargaining table.

There were 385 strikes in 2022, up 42% from 270 in 2021, according to the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. The US Labor Department, which tracks only major strikes by 1,000 or more workers, recorded 20 strikes in the first 11 months of 2022, up 33% from the same period in 2021.

Numerous nursing strikes were among the recorded work stoppages, with many unions citing instances of burnout and health problems among members.

Four out of the 20 strikes reported by the Labor Department last year involved nurses unions. The largest was a three-day strike by the 15,000 members of the Minnesota Nurses Association involving 13 hospitals in the state.

One dead, 57 injured in accident on Mexico City metro

MEXICO CITY, Jan 7 (Reuters) – At least one person was killed and 57 were injured in a train collision on Mexico City’s metro early on Saturday, local authorities said.

The person killed in the morning accident was a young woman, city security head Omar Garcia told local media Grupo Milenio.

Garcia shared an updated list of the injured later on Saturday, and the city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on Twitter that she was at the site.

Four others who were trapped on one wagon on Line 3 were rescued and are in good health, Garcia said earlier.

A variety of accidents have taken place on the metro in recent years. The most serious was the May 2021 collapse of a rail overpass on Line 12 that killed 26 people and injured more than 60.

Maintenance shortcomings were identified as one of that accident’s causes.

Utah home shooting in Enoch City leaves family of 8 dead, officials say

Comment

Eight members of a family — including five children — were found dead at a home in Enoch City, authorities said, an incident that is already rattling the small community in southern Utah.

Police responding to a welfare check at the home found the eight with gunshot wounds, city officials said Wednesday, according to the Associated Press, though it was not immediately clear why police were initially called to the address. The names and ages of the deceased have not been released.

Enoch City Manager Rob Dotson said in a news conference Wednesday that authorities have not found a motive so far, saying: “We don’t know why this happened, and we’re not going to guess.”

Dotson stressed that it could take a long time for experts to investigate what happened inside the family home.

The community of around eight thousand people in southern Utah is devastated by the incident, Dobson said. “They’re feeling loss, they’re feeling pain and they have a lot of questions,” he said.

“We all know this family,” Dotson continued, explaining that “everybody has some connection to the individuals and some connections to the family.”

Iron County School District in Cedar City, Utah, said in a statement Wednesday that all five children had been students at its schools and that the deaths were a “tragic loss” for the community.

“This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school district, especially our students,” it said.

In a tweet, Deidre Henderson, lieutenant governor of Utah, described the shooting as “a tragedy” and said she was praying for the community of Enoch City.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this senseless violence,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) tweeted. “Please keep the community of Enoch in your prayers.”

Bodies of 3 adults, 5 minors found inside Enoch City home

ENOCH, Utah — Eight bodies were found inside an Enoch City home Wednesday; all suffering from gunshot wounds, police say.

Enoch City officials said three adults and five minors were among those found inside the home in the 4900 North block of Albert Drive. Police were called to the house in reference to a welfare check and found the bodies inside.

All the victims were members of one family, but it’s not known why a welfare check was performed or whether police had any prior involvement with the family.

“This is not normal, this is not something that happens often at all, and in a small community in rural Utah. We’re all family, so this affects everybody and everybody had some connection to the individuals and some connection to the family,” said Enoch City City manager Rob Dotson.

Names and ages of the victims have yet to be released, but those that knew the family were shocked to hear what had happened.

“I just feel terrible, they were just really nice people and I mean, it’s going be one of those things that who knows,” said neighbor Tom Deville.

Officials added that they do not believe there is a threat to the public or that any suspects are at large.

The five minors were all students in the Iron County School District. The district said a Crisis Intervention Team will be at schools to help students and staff who need assistance emotionally dealing with the incident.

“We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child as needed,” the district wrote in a statement.

3 New York City officers injured in machete attack, suspect shot near New Year’s Eve ball drop

A man with a machete attacked three New York City police officers not far from the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration, police said early Sunday.

Two were struck in the head and were hospitalized. One officer — a rookie, patrolling on his first day with the NYPD — suffered a fractured skull, said Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell during a press conference. The other, an officer in his eighth year with the NYPD suffered a bad gash. All three officers were in stable condition and expected to recover, a spokesperson said Sunday.

The 19-year-old suspect, who police sources identified as Trevor Bickford, according to CBS New York, was shot in the shoulder by one of the offices. He is also expected to recover.

According to CBS New York, Bickford had recently been placed on an FBI terror watchlist after his aunt reported he had been radicalized online and had expressed a desire to travel overseas and fight with Islamic extremists.

The attack occurred shortly after 10 p.m., just eight blocks from Times Square, where thousands were packed in for the city’s annual New Year’s ball drop.

Mayor Eric Adams said that he had spoken to an injured officer at the hospital while his wound was being stitched.

“He was in good spirits,” Adams said. “He understood that his role saved lives of New Yorkers today.”

Adams praised the officers’ actions and said the incident was isolated.

“We’re really pleased by the response and how our officers handled this situation. All three of the officers are in stable conditions and there are no credible threats to New Yorkers at this time,” Adams said.

The assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York field office said it appeared the suspect acted alone.

The FBI, NYPD and Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating, but have not said if they’ve determined a motive for the attack.

Have Man City created Pep Guardiola’s dream full-back? Rico Lewis feels like a new breed of player

Realistically, it was nothing new. Pep Guardiola has been using a flexible defensive approach for years, and his use of half-backs — those who push inside from a full-back position to a central midfield role — has become a standard part of his approach with Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

Still, there are times when you have to stand back and appreciate Guardiola’s boldness. In the 3-1 victory over Leeds last night, he used a three-man defence stretched across the width of the pitch, a central midfielder in Rodri who often dropped in to centre-back but also burst forward to score the opener, and a full league debutant in Rico Lewis as a holding-midfielder-cum-right-back. The key thing, of course, is that it all worked perfectly.

On paper, Guardiola was using a back four, comprising the 18-year-old Lewis on the right, John Stones and Manuel Akanji in the middle, and Nathan Ake at left-back. But that was City’s shape without the ball, which isn’t particularly relevant when they had 69 per cent of possession.

On the pitch, of course, it was something different. Leeds played an extremely narrow 4-3-3, attempting to dominate the centre of the pitch and prevent City from passing through the middle. Stones pushed out to right-back and Lewis drifted inside — you can see him near the centre spot in the screengrab below. City played, as they often do, with a 3-2 defensive base…

… and then, further forward, something approaching a front five. Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne could be considered part of a box midfield, but they were roughly on the same line as City’s front three.

And some of the shapes City took up in possession were extraordinary. Here’s an example of Stones and Ake, the two wider defenders in possession, pushing forward in advance of Rodri and taking it in turns to carry the ball forward, exploiting Leeds’ narrowness.

Here’s Rodri dropping into defence, to the right of Akanji…

… and then again to the left, making a back four to help City play around Leeds’ front three and allowing Stones and Ake to move wider. The particularly bold thing here, of course, is leaving Lewis entirely on his own in midfield.

The following move, when City played their way out of Leeds’ press after 15 minutes, was particularly impressive — not just because of the slick passing, but because of the positioning of the respective players.

Akanji, in theory the most ‘fixed’ defender as the central of the three, is on the ball at left-back. Stones, who spent most of the game near the right touchline, is over towards the left corner flag. Rodri, the holding midfielder, is briefly the most obvious defender, while left-back Ake is tucked in alongside the central midfielder, Gundogan.

The most interesting individual performance came from Lewis, who really feels like something new.

Whereas Guardiola has previously converted full-backs who are accustomed to playing as ‘natural’ full-backs, advancing down the flanks, Lewis has seemingly been moulded in City’s academy specifically to play this role.

He spent more of his time in midfield than at full-back and feels more comfortable than Kyle Walker or Joao Cancelo in terms of receiving forward passes in tight spaces, on the turn, and playing another forward pass.

He’s excellent at scanning the pitch as the passer plays the ball to him, and pops the ball past opponents quickly and unfussily, in the mould of a Spanish midfielder more than an English full-back.

His distribution was generally tidy rather than expressive, but on a couple of occasions, he received the ball centrally and then spread it out to the flank, forcing Leeds inside and then outside.

And he’s also capable of overlapping when required — here, as City built a move in the left channel, he sprinted forward to give Riyad Mahrez an option on the outside, before passing infield for Kevin De Bruyne to have a shot from range.

The tricky thing about Lewis’ role can be the defensive transitions when City lose possession. Lewis isn’t in a natural position to cope with an opposition left-winger, but because Leeds were playing so narrow, Lewis’ job was fairly simple — just tracking Wilfried Gnonto’s run.

The trickier task was for Stones, whose positioning was so advanced and wide that tucking inside into a centre-back role could have been difficult — he needs to go from outside Lewis to inside him. Leeds were sloppy at turnovers and didn’t exploit any space between City’s defenders.

It’s also worth considering the importance of recovery pace when playing Stones’ role and Walker is probably now more suited to that position rather than Lewis’ role.

Ultimately, City won this game through a quick break and then a high press, rather than from moves stemming from build-up play in deep positions. But they controlled possession well, dragged Leeds around, exploited space out wide and guarded against counter-attacks.

The biggest positive was Lewis, who was at the heart of everything and deserves to keep his place for the visit of Everton on New Year’s Eve.

It remains to be seen whether he’s used in upcoming clashes with Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham. But on this evidence, he symbolises Guardiola’s novel approach we’ve come to take for granted, and might soon be considered a new breed of player entirely.

A Queens, New York man faces charges of attempted murder and assault after allegedly mowing down his wife with a vehicle and stabbing her with a knife.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a press release on Wednesday that Stephen Giraldo, 36, had his three children in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

New York City Police arrested Stephen Giraldo of Queens for allegedly driving an SUV into his wife and stabbing her with a knife.

“The brutality of the attack, and the fact that it was committed in full view of the victim’s three young children, stirs heartbreak and outrage in all of us,” Katz said. “My thoughts are with the children.”

NYC MAN CHARGED IN 2 ‘RANDOM’ SLASHINGS

According to a complaint filed against Giraldo, video surveillance taken at about 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 27 shows him getting into the driver’s seat of a white Ford Explorer parked near the intersection of Sanford Avenue and Parsons Boulevard.

Kansas City theater director, 63, found dead at his home two days after he was accused of sex abuse

A Kansas City children’s theater director was found dead Saturday just days after stories of sexual abuse over his 30-year tenure began to spread across social media.

Jeff Church, 63, was found dead by local police at his home on West 63rd Street in Kansas City Saturday afternoon, just hours after The Coterie Theater said it had accepted his resignation. The medical examiner’s office has not yet determined the cause of death and police are still investigating.

Church had been the artistic director at the theater for well over 30 years and directed and produced a number of plays and musicals around the city.

The accusations from young male actors and theater staffers began to trickle out on December 20, when a former actor named Dashawn Young said that Church sexually assaulted him at a pool party in 2017, when he was 22.

Jeff Church, 63, was found dead by local police at his home on West 63rd Street in Kansas City Saturday afternoon, just hours after The Coterie Theater said it had accepted his resignation over multiple accusations of sexual abuse

Young – in a video that has since been taken down – said that he and Church had been on two dates but that their relationship had closed at the time.

He alleged that after the party, he went into Church’s bedroom to change out of his swimsuit when Church unexpectedly tried to have sex with him, The Pitch reported.

The outlet followed up on Young’s accusation by speaking to about a dozen former employees of The Coterie, all of whom called Church’s predation ‘Kansas City theater’s worst kept secret.’

They said that the sources, who remained anonymous due to fear of retaliation from Church: ‘Uses the promise of career advancement, in combination with social, professional, and physical pressure, to enact predatory behavior on young male actors.’

Church’s alleged victims said the tiny size of Kansas City’s theater scene meant that the alleged pervert wielded great power with which to manipulate young men.

Young said that as of Friday, the only interaction he’d had with anyone from the theater was when an employee asked him to not tag their account in his accusations.

Two days later, Mark Manning – a local radio personality – said that Church had assaulted him when he was 27 in 1991. Manning said he knew of others Church had abused and said three others reached out to him after posting his accusation to Facebook saying they’d experienced similar.

Manning told the Kansas City Star that he wanted to support Young and any other victims who might be out there.

On Saturday, The Coterie Theatre wrote on Facebook that it accepted Church’s resignation but that they would independently investigate

He said: ‘It’s been going on for over 30 years. Most of these people were young theater artists trying to find their way through their theatrical career and a person in a very great authority position of directing them and deciding who gets paid and who gets the job [was] interfering in people’s lives.’

KC Comeaux, another actor who worked with Church, responded to the allegations with a statement of his own on Facebook.

He said that while he was in his early 20s Church ‘groomed, abused, and assaulted’ him.

He called for any further victims to come forward and said that he and ‘countless others’ would support them.

On Friday, the Coterie announced that it was placing Church on ‘administrative leave’ while an investigation was conducted.

Another former Coterie performer, Shea Coffman, told The Pitch via email that Church had made ‘a series of unwelcome encounters’ back in 2007.

Another former Coterie performer, Shea Coffman, told The Pitch via email that Church had made ‘a series of unwelcome encounters’ back in 2007

Coffman – who was 19 years old at the time – added that he believes he was taken off a production at the theater because he said no to Church’s advances, something several sources The Pitch spoke to said Church did to those who told him no.

On Saturday, The Coterie Theatre wrote on Facebook that it accepted Church’s resignation but that they would independently investigate.

They wrote: ‘We want you to know that we are taking these allegations extremely seriously and will move forward with the investigation immediately, despite the impending holidays.’

Church’s biography has since been removed from the theater’s website.

The Pitch reported that a complaint had been filed against Church, alleging that he’d used the Coterie Theatre’s Instagram account to send sexually explicit messages.

By the time the theater made its statement, police had found the longtime leader at the Coterie dead at his home in the early afternoon on Christmas Eve

The outlet editorializes that they found it ‘difficult to believe that Coterie’s board has not been made aware of their artistic director’s accused actions in the past.’

The complaint adds that Church continually made staffers uncomfortable and that there was a lack of oversight against him.

By the time the theater made its statement, police had found the longtime leader at the Coterie dead in the early afternoon on Christmas Eve.

Kansas City police received a call of a dead body at around 1:42 p.m. Saturday. EMS responded and pronounced Church dead.

De Bruyne, Haaland power Manchester City past Liverpool

It was business as usual for Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, as Manchester City returned from the 2022 World Cup break with a thrilling 3-2 victory over holders Liverpool in the League Cup round of 16 at Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

[ MORE: How to watch Premier League in USA ]

Manchester City will resume their title defense when the PL returns on Wednesday, Dec. 28, when Jesse Marsch and Leeds host the defending Premier League champions at Elland Road (WATCH LIVE). Liverpool will be in action again on Boxing Day (Monday, Dec. 26), away to Aston Villa (WATCH LIVE).

De Bruyne picked out Haaland with a cross toward the penalty spot just as Haaland got wrong side of Joe Gomez and beat him to the ball. The finish was hardly easy, with Haaland arriving at a high rate of speed and pinpoint precision required to touch it home. He made it look easy.

Fabio Carvalho turned home a cross from James Milner to level the score in the 20th minute, and it would stay 1-1 until halftime. Two minutes into the second half, Riyad Mahrez brought the ball down from the sky and whipped a left-footed curler inside the far post with two silky smooth touches in the blink of an eye. 2-1 to Manchester City, but not for long.

Mohamed Salah made it 2-2 just a minute later after Darwin Nunez got in behind 18-year-old right back Rico Lewis, who was otherwise stellar on the night, down the left side. Nunez found Salah near the penalty spot after he peeled away from Nathan Ake, sending a slow roller over the line for another instant response.

De Bruyne wasn’t done, though, his best work still to come on assist no. 2. After taking the short corner quickly, De Bruyne floated a brilliant cross to the back post where Ake was arriving after making the late run into the box.
