Chris Hemsworth To “Take Time Off Acting” After Alzheimer’s Predisposition

The actor said the news forced him to face the reality of his own mortality

Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth recently revealed that he is at an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s due to a genetic predisposition. Soon after, he announced that he will be taking some time off from acting. The 39-year-old Australian actor got to know about the diagnosis while he was undergoing routine tests during the filming of a new docuseries, which will stream on Disney Plus.

The ‘Thor’ actor carries two copies of the gene APOE4, which studies have linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. He, however, emphasised that it is not a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, and neither does it mean he will definitely develop the disease but it is a cause for concern. The shocking revelation was made during an interview with Vanity Fair.

The actor during an episode of National Geographic’s Limitless said, “It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off. And since we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do. Now, when I finish this tour this week, I’m going home and I’m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.”

During the Vanity Fair interview, ‘Thor’ actor said that the diagnosis did not come as a surprise since his grandfather has Alzheimer’s.

The actor said the news forced him to face the reality of his own mortality. “Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death. Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality,” he said.

“It’s like one in a thousand people… or one in 10,000. I can’t remember. But eight to 10 times more likely,” he told Vanity Fair, jokingly adding, “Since you told me that, I feel like my memory’s getting worse. It’s a placebo effect-or it’s taking place.”

“My concern was I just didn’t want to manipulate it and overdramatise it, and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy, or whatever, for entertainment. It’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation,” he added.

Neurologists Explain Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Shocking’ Alzheimer’s News

Chris Hemsworth revealed on Friday that he has two genes that put him at a much higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease than the average person, but neurologists tell The Daily Beast that’s not necessarily cause for alarm.

The revelation came during a recent episode of Hemsworth’s National Geographic series Limitless, airing on Disney+, which purports to offer “fascinating insights into how we can all unlock our body’s superpowers to fight illness, perform better, and even reverse the aging process.”

In episode five, titled “Memory,” Dr. Peter Attia tells the Australian actor that he has two copies of the APOE4 gene, one from his mom and one from his dad. This, Attia says, makes it up to 10 times more likely that he’ll develop Alzheimer’s compared to the average person. Hemsworth is seen having a somber reaction to the news as he adjusts his posture and focuses intently on the doctor’s words. During a confessional filmed afterward, he says he was “floored.”

The information was apparently so sensitive that Attia called Limitless creator Darren Aronofsky to tell him that he’d rather break the news privately instead of on camera, Hemsworth told Vanity Fair, adding that the whole thing was “pretty shocking.”

Only about 2 to 3 percent of people have both copies of the gene, says Dr. Corinne Pettigrew, the leader of outreach, recruitment, and engagement at the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

And it doesn’t mean Hemsworth is guaranteed to develop the illness.

For starters, a crash course on the gene might be helpful. The gene for Apolipoprotein E, or APOE, tells your body how to make the protein of the same name, which helps to metabolize fat and carry cholesterol through your body. The gene comes in variations, or alleles, APOE2, APOE3, and APOE4.

The APOE4 gene carries the “worst possible risk for Alzheimer’s disease,” says Dr. Lawrence S Honig, a professor of neurology at Columbia University and the director of the New York State Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease.

“It’s true that having one or two APOE4 does increase the risk, but it isn’t determinative, so we don’t usually find it useful to test for it except in a research setting,” Honig tells The Daily Beast.

Both Honig and Sam Gandy, a professor of neurology and the director of the Mount Sinai Center for Cognitive Health, emphasize that there’s a good chunk of Alzheimer’s patients—anywhere from one-third to half—who don’t have APOE4 genes at all.

“Not everyone with two copies develops Alzheimer’s,” Gandy says. “There are rare people who escape it. Diet and lifestyle are important.”

Also important is resistance to the gene’s worst effects, which some seem to possess in greater quantities than others. “They could be carrying what we call resilience genes,” Gandy says.

While the exact connection between APOE4 and Alzheimer’s isn’t established, studies show links between the gene and the buildup of amyloid plaques and tau “tangles,” both widely considered to be tell-tale signs of Alzheimer’s. The gene also disrupts the blood-brain barrier. “It’s important that proteins in blood be separate from proteins in the brain. People with this gene have a leaky blood-brain barrier,” Gandy explains. Additionally, APOE4 is supposed to create the protein that helps carry cholesterol. The myelin, an insulative layer that allows nerve cells to develop electrical properties to communicate with each other, requires a lot of cholesterol. The gene may “impair” how much cholesterol the myelin receives, Gandy says. A fourth connection is that APOE4 genes stimulate inflammation.

But with the disease being so tied to your genetic makeup, Honig is loath to recommend that anyone take a test like the one Hemsworth took.

“What is he supposed to do with that information?” Honig says. “The answer is he can’t do much with that information, since he doesn’t know whether he will or won’t get that disease, and we don’t have a clear way of preventing Alzheimer’s disease at this time.”

Pettigrew agrees. While she’s seen estimates that say the risk for patients with two APOE4 alleles is 10 times greater than for people who don’t have them, “there’s nothing we can do at this point in time, that we know of, that would definitely stop or prevent dementia.”

For Hemsworth, the star of Marvel’s Thor franchise, news that he carried two APOE4 alleles was all the more poignant considering that his grandfather is currently living with the incurable disease.

“I’m not sure he actually remembers much anymore and he slips in and out of Dutch, which is his original language, so he’ll be talking Dutch and English and then a mash-up and then maybe some other new words as well,” the 39-year-old told Vanity Fair.

Hemsworth says the news, and the show in general, forced him to reckon with his lifestyle and take a step back. He now plans to finish out his remaining contracts and take a “chunk of time off and just simplify.”

All told, the doctors agree that positive lifestyle changes like a heart-healthy diet, exercise, and regular social interaction can help someone stave off the worst effects of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related illnesses, even when the risk seems high.

“Even if you can push it off by 10 years, that’s a huge increase in cognitive and functional time that you have,” Pettigrew says.

Honig adds that some of the drugs being worked on at the moment also offer some hope. One drug in particular shows that people with APOE4 could benefit more from its use.

“Having APOE4s—one or two—increases the amount of amyloid protein in the brain overall, but also in the blood vessels,” Honig says. “If you have more amyloids, the antibodies give you more side effects, but in the same way you get the side effects, it may mean that the antibody works better on the amyloid.”

There’s hope, but until these drugs are more thoroughly researched and hit a wider market, “You’re sort of stuck with your genes,” says Honig.

Chris Hemsworth receives ‘strong indication’ of a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease while filming new show

CNN
 —

Chris Hemsworth embarked on a personal and physically demanding journey for his new series “Limitless” that ultimately led to a sobering discovery.

The “Thor” actor, 39, learns in one episode of the limited Disney+/National Geographic series – which shows him exploring ways to enhance his longevity and combat aging – that he has two copies of the APOE4 gene, one from each of his parents, meaning he has a heightened predisposition for developing Alzheimer’s disease.

“They took all my bloodwork and did a bunch of tests and the plan was to on-camera tell me all the results and then talk about how you can improve this and that,” Hemsworth shared with Vanity Fair in an article published on Thursday. “And Peter Attia, who is the longevity doctor in that episode, and overseeing a lot of the show, called [“Limitless” creator] Darren [Aronofsky] and said, ‘I don’t want to tell him this on camera. We need to have an off-side conversation and see if he even wants this to be in the show.’ It was pretty shocking because he called me up and he told me.”

Upon learning the news, Hemsworth said he “had a bunch of questions,” later adding that he “didn’t really know what to think. I was like, ‘Am I supposed to be worried? Is this concerning?’”

He also said that the show then “became even more relevant and important for me, even more poignant than I ever thought it would be,” adding that APOE4 is “not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication. Ten years ago, I think it was more thought of as determinant.”

The new information, which Hemsworth said makes him “eight to 10 times more likely” to eventually develop Alzheimer’s disease, naturally caused him to reflect on death and his own mortality.

“There was an intensity to navigating it. Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we’ll somehow avoid it,” he told Vanity Fair. “We all have this belief that we’ll figure it out. Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in.”

“Limitless,” which shows the Marvel star engaging in various stunts and practices to prolong and enhance his life, in fact deals with facing death in the final episode.

“I think that’s my favorite episode. That’s where I worked with the death doula and people who worked in palliative care and end of life care and then spoke to a number of people who were at the end of their days or coming upon them – even younger people that were diagnosed with cancer and didn’t have long to live,” he shared.

“Doing an episode on death and facing your own mortality made me go, ‘Oh God, I’m not ready to go yet,’” he later added. “I want to sit and be in this space with a greater sense of stillness and gratitude. And then you start talking about kids and family and going, ‘Oh my God, they’re getting older, they’re growing up and I keep slapping another movie on top of another movie.’ Before you know it, they’re 18 and they’ve moved out of house, and I missed the window.”

In preparing the show for air, Hemsworth also mentioned that he was “offered a version of the episode where we didn’t talk about [his discovered genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s],” but that the prospect of helping others helped him to get over any hesitation.

“I thought, ‘No, look, if this is a motivator for people to take better care of themselves and also understand that there are steps you can take – then fantastic.’ My concern was I just didn’t want to manipulate it and overdramatize it, and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy or whatever for entertainment.”

Hemsworth, who most recently appeared as the MCU’s God of Thunder in his fourth solo outing in this summer’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” is next set to appear in another sequel, next year’s “Extraction 2.” He is also wrapping up a yet-to-be-revealed role in 2024’s “Furiosa,” costarring Anya Taylor-Joy, set in the universe of “Mad Max.”

Thor Love and Thunder Trailer Taika Waititi, Hemsworth, Portman

Say hello to the Mighty Thor.
Gif: Marvel Studios

After Thor: Ragnarok, fans obviously expected Thor: Love and Thunder to be wild. Just off-the-walls bonkers nonsense from the man who does that better than anyone: writer-director Taika Waititi. Now, the first trailer is here, and it delivers on that promise and more. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, indeed, bringing the thunder. And we love it.

Thor: Love and Thunder opens July 8 in theaters only. It brings back Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, as well as all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Oscar winners Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, and a whole lot more. Many of which you see right here in this incredible trailer.

When last we saw the God of Thunder, he’d left New Asgard in the capable hands of Valkyrie, and set off back into the cosmos with the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Avengers: Endgame. As you can see this movie picks up from there and goes into places we’d never expect. Well, except for that whole Jane Foster becoming the Mighty Thor thing—that was revealed waaaay back at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige laid out the plan for Phase 4. At that time, Thor: Love and Thunder was one of the last entries. Now it’s finally coming and it will, from what we can tell, certainly be setting things up for the future.

Oh, and isn’t it wild that Thor: Love and Thunder is the first fourth Marvel Studios character movie? The Avengers got four movies but Iron Man and Captain America only got three. Does that make Thor the current crown jewel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or is it just that Marvel couldn’t say no to another Waititi movie when he basically has his choice of projects, including Star Wars? Probably a bit of both. In the meantime, check out a new poster for the movie too.

Liam Hemsworth and Gabriella Brooks spend Christmas with his family

It’s all uphill from here.

Liam Hemsworth’s romance with Gabriella Brooks just took a more serious turn, as the actor invited his model girlfriend to spend Christmas Day with his entire family on their European ski trip.

A group snap from the trip shows Brooks, 25, fitting in just fine with her 31-year-old boyfriend’s family, including brother Chris Hemsworth, 38, and his wife, Elsa Pataky.

The actor held up a “hang loose” sign as his girlfriend cuddled up close to his family members.
Instagram

Brooks and Pataky, 45, appeared to be bonding during the trip, as they posed for a cute photo together in the snow. The two were all smiles as someone in their party snapped their pic, which Pataky shared to her Instagram early Sunday.

“Happy Christmas!! 😍☃️🏂Feliz Navidad!” wrote Pataky, who shares daughter India, 9, and twins Sasha and Tristan, 7, with Chris.

Brooks and Pataky appeared to be enjoying each other’s company on the Hemsworth family trip.

Meanwhile, over on Chris’ Instagram, the actor shared a video of himself throwing son Tristan into a pile of snow before Liam snuck up and pushed him right back.

Liam then poked fun at his brother’s superhero size, saying he fell “like a ton of bricks” because he’s “so heavy.”

Liam joined in on the social media posting with a solo pic of his bearded self sitting in the snow, while Brooks opted out of sharing anything to her feed. Instead, she shared a short video of snow to her Instagram Story.

Across the globe, Liam’s ex-wife, Miley Cyrus, spent Christmas Day with her own family, including brother Braison Cyrus and his 6-month-old son, Bear.

“Christmas with the Cyrus family 💚 Guess who the only one not stoned is? 🐻,” the singer captioned a family photo.

Cyrus’ divorce from Liam was finalized in January 2020 after less than a year of marriage. She briefly dated Kaitlynn Carter before moving on with Cody Simpson. Cyrus and Simpson eventually called it quits after 10 months of dating.

Liam has been dating Brooks since 2020.

God of War Ragnarok Director Reveals Why Thor Doesn’t Look Like Chris Hemsworth

Developer Santa Monica Studio revealed a little over a week ago that its own version of Thor that is slated to appear in the upcoming PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 title God of War Ragnarok will look a bit different than other iterations of the character that we have seen in popular media. Notably, Ragnarok’s take on Thor represents an almost night and day difference between the version played by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, those who created this new take on Thor have revealed why they opted to go in a different direction.

Speaking to Game Informer, God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams was asked about Santa Monica Studio’s iteration of Thor and what he was inspired by. In short, Williams explained that they wanted to create a version of Thor that was more accurate to Norse mythology. “Well, I don’t know, we just want him to be a big boy, you know. There’s Marvel’s interpretation of him is one thing. It’s interesting. We wanted to, you know, go a little deeper into the mythology itself,” Williams said. He went on to say that even though Thor has a bit larger of a gut compared to the MCU version of Thor, this added weight is almost more reflective of real strongmen. “They have a presence immediately. And it’s not always because of muscles. They’re just like that is a wall of a human being, you know. So this is a wall of a God, you know, and that’s why it was very important,” he explained.

Adding his own take on the situation, God of War director Cory Barlog said that he personally loves the look of Thor that the studio has come up with. “I think there’s something so fantastic in that that not everything needs to be this glistening muscle hulk kind of concept to still be fantastic and powerful and intimidating,” Barlog added. All in all, it definitely sounds like those working on the game are huge fans of the version of Thor that they have created, and hopefully, once fans see the character in action within God of War Ragnarok, they’ll feel the same way.
