Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles — LT Donovan Smith, WR Chris Godwin avoided serious injuries

ARLINGTON, Texas — Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said Monday that left tackle Donovan Smith has a hyperextended right elbow and his availability will be dictated by his pain tolerance level.

Bowles also said he does not believe Pro Bowl wide receiver Chris Godwin’s hamstring injury — which he suffered in the second quarter — is “as serious as we thought it was.”

It was Godwin’s first game back since recovering from a torn ACL and MCL, which he suffered Dec. 19 last season, and undergoing surgery Jan. 3.

“It all depends on how his treatment goes and how he heals,” Bowles said of Godwin. “But hopefully we’ll have him back sooner rather than later.”

Smith left the 19-3 Bucs victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the second quarter following a Micah Parsons sack and did not return.

“He’s pretty sore right now,” Bowles said of Smith, the Bucs’ starting left tackle in his eighth season. “We’ll monitor him during the week.”

Bowles said it is possible that Smith can play this week.

“We’ll see how he feels, yeah,” Bowles said.

The Bucs face the Saints on the road this week and have not had a regular-season win at New Orleans since Sept. 9, 2018.

The Saints’ defense has largely dictated the outcome of recent games against the Bucs, with New Orleans delivering a 9-0 shutout in Tampa last season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers place franchise tag on veteran wide receiver Chris Godwin, 26, again

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed their franchise tag on veteran wide receiver Chris Godwin on Tuesday, the team announced.

A long-term deal with Tampa Bay could get done before Monday’s legal tampering period kicks off, but no contract will be done by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline, a source said. As such, he’ll receive $19.18 million. The two sides had been working on hammering out a new contract for the last 24 hours, sources said.

Godwin is being tagged for the second straight year, which is why he’s not receiving the standard $18.419 million for the receiver position. He was tagged for $15.98 million last year, and NFL rules mandate that a player tagged for the second consecutive year receives a 120% bump of his salary from the previous year.

Godwin suffered a torn ACL in the Buccaneers’ Week 15 loss to the New Orleans Saints, ending his season. Even with the injury, he finished the season with a team-leading 1,103 receiving yards and 98 receptions.

Godwin, who turned 26 in February, underwent surgery this offseason to repair the injury, and coach Bruce Arians said at the NFL combine that Godwin is about 40% healed from his injury and that he has no concerns about his ability to bounce back.

“Knowing Chris and the way he works — he had a good surgery, and those guys are coming back faster and faster now — I don’t think that’s going to be a problem at all,” Arians said.

Last year, the Bucs could not reach an agreement on a new contract with Godwin, instead placing the franchise tag, worth $16 million, on him. Over the last three seasons, Godwin has notched 3,276 receiving yards — eighth most in the league in that span — while his 249 catches rank 10th and his 21 touchdowns 12th.

He has 342 receptions for 4,643 yards and 29 touchdowns in five seasons.
