Ali Ahmed Aslam, ‘Chicken Tikka Masala’ Inventor Dies At 77

A chef from Glasgow, Ali Ahmed Aslam who is credited with inventing the ‘chicken tikka masala’ has died at the age of 77.

Ali Ahmed Aslam’s death was announced by his Shish Mahal restaurant in Glasgow, which closed for 48 hours as a mark of respect, reported The Guardian.  The eatery announced: “Hey, Shish Snobs … Mr Ali passed away this morning … We are all absolutely devastated and heartbroken.”

He invented the dish by improvising a sauce made from a tin of tomato soup at his restaurant Shish Mahal in the 1970s, died on Monday morning, his nephew Andleeb Ahmed told AFP.

“He would eat lunch in his restaurant every day,” Ahmed said.

“The restaurant was his life. The chefs would make curry for him. I am not sure if he often ate chicken tikka masala.”

Ahmed said his uncle was a perfectionist and highly driven.

“Last year he was unwell and I went to see him in hospital on Christmas Day,” Ahmed said.

“His head was slumped down. I stayed for 10 minutes. Before I left, he lifted his head and said you should be at work.”

In an interview with AFP in 2009, Ali said he came up with the recipe for chicken tikka masala after a customer complained that his chicken tikka was too dry.

“Chicken tikka masala was invented in this restaurant, we used to make chicken tikka, and one day a customer said, ‘I’d take some sauce with that, this is a bit dry’,” Ali said.

“We thought we’d better cook the chicken with some sauce. So from here, we cooked chicken tikka with a sauce that contains yogurt, cream, and spices.”

The dish went on to become the most popular dish in British restaurants.

Although it is difficult to prove definitively where the dish originated, it is generally regarded as a curry adapted to suit Western tastes.

Ali said the chicken tikka masala is prepared according to customer taste.

“Usually they don’t take hot curry, that’s why we cook it with yoghurt and cream,” he said.

Supporters of the campaign to grant the dish protected status point to the fact that former foreign minister Robin Cook once described it as a crucial part of British culture.

“Chicken tikka masala is now a true British national dish, not only because it is the most popular, but because it is a perfect illustration of the way Britain absorbs and adapts external influences,” Cook said in a 2001 speech on British identity.

Ali, originally from Punjab province in Pakistan, moved with his family to Glasgow as a young boy before opening Shish Mahal in Glasgow’s west end in 1964.

He said he wanted the dish to be a gift to Glasgow, to give something back to his adopted city.

In 2009, he campaigned unsuccessfully for the dish to be granted “Protected Designation of Origin” status by the European Union, alongside the likes of Champagne, Parma Ham and Greek Feta cheese.

MP Mohammad Sarwar tabled a motion in the House of Commons in 2009 calling for EU protection.

Ali leaves a wife, three sons and two daughters.

Thanksgiving-feast inflation shifts shoppers to chicken

Inflation is forcing peckish Big Apple shoppers to wing it on Thanksgiving, with some telling The Post they’ll be gobbling chicken because turkey is just too expensive.

“I’m going to buy cooked chicken that they usually have on sale for $5 or $7,” sighed Osvaldo Baez, 62, who is on a fixed income and has always celebrated Thanksgiving with turkey.

At Key Food in the East Village, where The Post found Baez shopping, a 16-pound Butterball was running $1.99 a pound — after spending an extra $75 on groceries.

“All these companies are making money, billions and billions and billions, and they’re still inflating the prices on all items,” he squawked. “And the government’s allowing it — they’re fully aware.”

A holiday spread of 12 items serving 10 people is estimated to run a whopping $64.05 this year, a 20-percent spike from $53.31 just last year, according to the annual American Farm Bureau Federation survey.

Baez said that he’ll be serving rotisserie chicken at his Thanksgiving feast instead of expensive turkey.

Frozen turkeys included in the survey cost $1.81 per pound in mid-to-late October, a 21 percent jump from last year, in part due to a smaller flock this year and more expensive feed costs.

Among other price surges: cubed stuffing costs $3.88 for a 14-ounce box vs. $2.29 last year, while a pack of two pie shells shot up 77 cents to $3.68.

Fed-up shoppers said the Biden administration’s profligate spending was to blame for their sudden case of fiscal agita.

Many Thanksgiving staples have skyrocketed in price since last year.

“We spent too much money as a government, which is the problem,” griped Jim Bitros, 74. “There’s no such thing as free money and you have to find out at some point.”

“Who’s in the administration now?” a 62-year-old bookkeeper seethed rhetorically, adding that eggs cost $10. “It wasn’t like that before.”

“I’m disgusted,” she added. “I can’t save anything. I can’t save a little bit that I used to go on vacation.”

The president last month said that he’s trying to help families deal with the fact that Thanksgiving “costs a lot” of money at an event announcing efforts to curb banking “junk fees.”

Shoppers say they are having sticker shock over prices for Thanksgiving groceries.

Those families are now getting a bad case of supermarket sticker shock.

“I’ve been hearing about it, but now I’m seeing it with my own eyes,” cried Denise Perez, 47, who was appalled to see roast pork running $1.49 a pound, 50 percent more than its usual price, alongside higher-priced turkey and vegetables.

“General inflation slashing the purchasing power of consumers is a significant factor contributing to the increase in average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner,” said AFBF Chief Economist Roger Cryan, who additionally linked the sky-high costs to supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine.

Kristallnacht chicken: KFC Germany apologizes for ‘unacceptable’ promotion tied to anniversary of massacre

KFC Germany issued an apology after a “semi-automated” push notification system promoted “tender cheese with crispy chicken” as a way to remember the anniversary of a Jewish massacre.

“It’s memorial day for Kristallnacht! Treat yourself with more tender cheese on your crispy chicken. Now at KFCheese!” the message said according to the BBC.

The company apologized for an “obviously wrong, insensitive and unacceptable message” pushed out on the Nov. 9 anniversary of Kristallnacht, the “night of broken glass” when a Nazi paramilitary group carried out an organized massacre of Jewish people.

The name derived from the morning after when broken glass from the shattered storefronts of Jewish-owned businesses littered the streets. An estimated 91 Jewish people died and 267 synagogues were destroyed, with many businesses looted, according to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

KFC Germany claimed in a statement that the message had generated as part of a “semi-automated content creation process linked to calendars that include national observances.”

“In this instance, our internal review process was not properly followed, resulting in a nonapproved notification being shared,” the statement said.

The company issued an apology within an hour of the push notification, saying it “sincerely” apologized for the “unplanned, insensitive and unacceptable message.”

Daniel Sugarman, the director of public affairs at the Board of Deputies of British Jews, called the message “absolutely hideous,” while Dalia Grinfeld, associate director for European affairs at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) tweeted “Shame on you!”

Chicken sold at Costco recalled because it may contain plastic

Foster Farms is recalling roughly 148,000 pounds of fully cooked frozen chicken breast patties sold at Costco because they may contain pieces of hard and potentially sharp plastic, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Eighty-ounce bags of breaded chicken breast patties with rib meat are being recalled because they could have “hard clear pieces of plastic” in them, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said Saturday.

The recalled products were shipped to Costco distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Washington, and may have been shipped to Costco retail locations, FSIS announced.

The recall is classified as Class I high or medium risk, which the agency terms as having “a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.” There have been no confirmed injuries, “but FSIS believes the hard plastic pieces could be sharp and possibly cause an injury,” it stated.

FSIS urged consumers to check their freezers for the recalled product, which should be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions can call the Foster Farms hotline at 1-800-338-8051 or email info@fosterfarms.com.

The problem surfaced when the Livingston, California-based company notified FSIS that it had heard complaints from consumers about hard clear plastic in the poultry products with a best-by date of August 11, 2023, the agency noted.

The affected patties were produced on August 11 and the bags containing them have the establishment number P-33901 and lot code 3*2223 on the back, and 7527899724 under the barcode.

Of six meat or poultry recalls posted by the FSIS in October, four came as a result of “extraneous material” in the products, specifically pieces of copper wire, blue rubber and hard plastic.

17-year-old boy, stepmom arrested in killing of rapper PnB Rock at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles in South LA; father sought

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A 17-year-old boy and his stepmother have been arrested in connection with the murder of rapper PnB Rock, who was fatally shot earlier this month at a Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles restaurant in South Los Angeles, Eyewitness News has learned.

A man who is the third suspect in the killing remains at large, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, which publicly released his name on Wednesday and described him as “armed and dangerous.” A source told Eyewitness News that the adult male suspect, Freddie Lee Trone, is the father of teen in custody.

The 17-year-old, who was arrested in the South Bay neighborhood of Lawndale, was booked on suspicion of murder, the LAPD said in a statement.

The teenager’s stepmother was identified by police as 32-year-old Shauntel Trone. She was taken into custody in Gardena and booked on suspicion of being an accessory to murder.

PnB Rock, born Rakim Hasheem Allen, was shot and killed at the restaurant on Sept. 12.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a suspect entered the restaurant and approached the rapper as he was having lunch with his girlfriend – who had already posted a picture of their food and their location on Instagram.

Investigators say the gunman shot him and stole some of his property, and also demanded property from the rapper’s girlfriend, before taking off in a getaway car.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

Anyone with information about Trone’s whereabouts is urged to call LAPD homicide detectives at (323) 786-5146.

The 30-year-old PnB Rock was known for singles that include “Fleek” and “Selfish.”

Originally from Philadelphia, he was most recently based in Los Angeles. He had 2.5 million followers on Instagram.

After his death, fans gathered near the restaurant to mourn the popular musician.

“His music was excellent,” said fan Sheldon Thompson. “He didn’t rap about the wrong things. He rapped about the right things. And he had a bright future ahead of him. Just to hear he didn’t survive is heartbreaking.”

Some fans also suggested he may have been deliberately targeted after his location was posted on social media. Detectives are investigating if that is the case.

“If you’re famous you know not to post your location anywhere,” said fan Aremesha Rivers. “I really feel like there’s a lot of setups going on.”

The case against those arrested will be presented to the L.A. County district attorney’s office for filing consideration no later than Thursday, the LAPD said.
