Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel as manager after poor start to season

Chelsea’s new owners have sacked head coach Thomas Tuchel just three months after completing their takeover of the club.

Tuchel’s 100th and final game in charge of Chelsea was Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League defeat at Dinamo Zagreb and sources have told ESPN that Tuchel, 49, was informed of the decision on Wednesday morning.

A consortium led by L.A. Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired the club from Roman Abramovich at the end of May and oversaw a record-spend in a single window for Chelsea of more than £250 million on nine players.

However, sources have told ESPN that relations between Boehly and Tuchel became strained over the club’s transfer strategy, while further concerns over the team’s substandard start to the season prompted the ownership to act.

Members of the club’s backroom staff will take interim charge, possibly also for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Fulham, as the search begins for Tuchel’s replacement.

A club statement read: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.

“There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.”

Tuchel was appointed as Frank Lampard’s successor in January 2021 and guided Chelsea to their second Champions League crown in May that year.

In February, he led Chelsea to the only trophy previously to elude Abramovich during his 19-year tenure, the Club World Cup, with victory over Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi.

However, Tuchel then came under intense pressure as the public face of the club as Abramovich was effectively forced into selling Chelsea after the U.K. government imposed sanctions relating to his alleged ties to Russia president Vladimir Putin.

Tuchel steered the club through a difficult period on the pitch as the Boehly/Clearlake consortium negotiated their purchase of the club.

However, disagreements emerged over the club’s transfer strategy and sources have suggested Boehly became concerned that Tuchel’s messages were not getting through to the players, many of whom had become frustrated at his approach.

Tuesday’s defeat in Zagreb was their third consecutive away loss, the first time that had happened under Tuchel, while the club lie sixth in the Premier League having won three of their opening six matches.

Speaking after losing in Zagreb, Tuchel said: “Of course I’m frustrated; there’s too much to analyse, I’m a part of it, and we are clearly not where we need to be. At the moment everything is missing.”

And that’s it. A huge win for Dinamo, and they deserve the three points and the plaudits. They were excellent while Chelsea were hopeless. Dinamo should be handed the credit for that but perhaps only Reece James looked anything like of the standard that would be expected. Thomas Tuchel glowers, he has a big job on now. The defence was ropey, the midfield lightweight and the forward line was blunt. Other than that, there’s not much to work on.

Chelsea’s season so far has been rocky. Thomas Tuchel has not cut the happiest of figures on the sidelines, and most beyond the SW London/Surrey delta would agree they got a tad lucky against West Ham at the weekend. The Champions League, the competition they won just 18 months ago, ought to be provide some respite though Dinamo are no mugs, having got past Shkupi, Ludogorets Razgrad and Bodo/Glimt to be here in the group stage. They also got the better of Spurs back in 2021 in the Europa League, you may recall. And beat Sevilla and West Ham in the same competition last year.

Full-time: Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 Chelsea

And that’s it. A huge win for Dinamo, and they deserve the three points and the plaudits. They were excellent while Chelsea were hopeless. Dinamo should be handed the credit for that but perhaps only Reece James looked anything like of the standard that would be expected. Thomas Tuchel glowers, he has a big job on now. The defence was ropey, the midfield lightweight and the forward line was blunt. Other than that, there’s not much to work on.

90+8 min: Dinamo run the ball down into the corner, as a famous victory is sensed….

90+7 min: Ziyech and James squabble over who takes it. Ziyech takes it – and does the same as last time. Rubbish, frankly. A gift to Dinamo, too.

90+6 min: Dinamo’s fans roaring on their heroes, who have given everything. Chelsea get a free-kick where the last one was, after Reece James is fouled.

90+4: Jorginho fouled in Jorginho territory. What will he – or anyone else – attempt? Ziyech fancies it. Head down, and into the wall. He’s had a shocker.

90+3 min: Ziyech penalised for picking the ball up for a throw when it had not actually yet run out of play. It’s been that type of night.

90+1 min: Eight minutes added on. Tuchel’s complaints about timewasting have been heard, and the use of the cart has been duly noted as a complete blag.

90 min: Petkovic is patient as he holds up the ball, buying his defence time as he does so. Twice it goes to him, and the second time he buys the foul.

89 min: Ademi is subbed off, taking his time, and on comes Baturina, the teenage sub.

86 min: Amazing scenes as James hits the post, and then as the ball comes across to Ziyech, he hits Livakovic after Jorginho’s shot is saved. Ziyech was offside, say. the robots. He should be relieved about that, as that should have been knocked in.

85 min: Thomas Tuchel is still muttering away…There could be some choice words spoken in post-match.

84 min: Ugly scenes as it becomes apparent that Cucurella’s tackle, down the back of Ivanusec’s Achilles, opens up the Dinamo player’s sock. No claret but the cart comes on to take him off.

83 min: All Chelsea now….

82 min: Incredible defending, as Broja looks to have an open goal to head at. Ljubicic suddenly arrives on the scene, and blocks it away from goal.

80 min: The ball loops into the Dinamo box, begging to be hit by a Chelsea player but again the clearance is made. There is confirmation that Tuchel has been booked for his complaints from the sideline.

78 min: Ziyech, again, is wasteful. Ademi, the Dinamo captain, is down after running into Fofana. Again, time is wasted and Tuchel, sat in his chair, grumbles though also seems resigned to his fate.

77 min: Two Dinamo changes. On come Lauritsen and Spikic, off go Moharrami and the man, the legend, Orsic. They take ages over them and Chelsea complain, with a yellow card brandished in the direction of Tuchel.

75 min: Final Chelsea change: off goes Sterling and on comes Pulisic.

74 min: Ziyech’s pass to the left is poor and Thomas Tuchel is fuming.

73 min: Koulibaly commits what looks like a tactical foul and gets away without a booking, and then Orsic gives Fofana, who has also had a nightmare, a chasing. Chelsea’s defence have been a mess.

71 min: Chelsea sub: Cucurella on for Chiwell, as the Spaniard makes his Champions League debut.

70 min: Havertz has plenty of time to shoot or pass, and Misic cuts in to clear up as the German dallies.

68 min: Ziyech fizzes in a ball that goes beyond Broja.

66 min: Sutalo clears the danger, and Ljubicic follows up, and Koulibaly is booked for clattering into Orsic. Chelsea have been rotten and now appear to be losing discipline. Orsic takes his time over getting treatment, so it’s their time they are wasting.

64 min: Chelsea and Dinamo is getting a bit heated. Mason Mount, already booked, gets involved in a skirmish and Tuchel is ranting into the central European late-summer night.

62 min: Joe Pearson gets involved: “Just catching up after getting home from running some errands. When Dinamo scored you said Chelsea “folded like a packet of sandwiches”. Are folding sandwiches some English delicacy that this sheltered Midwesterner is somehow unaware of?”

49 min: Havertz, on the right, spins and cuts the ball in, and Aubameyang is again sluggish as the ball comes in. The ideas are there, the execution is not.

47 min: Tuchel frantic on the sidelines. Is his job in danger? Under the previous ownership, it might be. Under the new owners, it still might be.

46 min: Half-time change for Chelsea, on comes Ziyech for Azpilicueta, as they go four at the back. Aubameyang and Kovacic surely don’t have much running left in them yet.

The goal came against the run of play but once it did, Dinamo have been fine value for their lead, and Chelsea have been a wobbling mess. Thomas Tuchel doesn’t look at all happy as he goes down the tunnel. Lots of work to do for Chelsea.

45+1 min: A swing and a miss from Aubameyang, the ball having been directed beyond him by Sterling. The rustiness continues for the striker.

44 min: Dinamo on the counter, and it comes to Orsic on the edge of the box, Chilwell blocks it but the home team retain possession and are up in numbers. A fresh air shot from Orsic ends the danger.

42 min: Perhaps a sign Dinamo are trying to see out the half. A glimpse of action as Sterling loops the ball over, and Aubameyang is not exactly at the races. There’s an offside, too.

40 min: Chelsea try to pass their way through and Dinamo drop into shape, solid as a rock. Aubameyang is tackled as the ball comes to him, Peric closing him down with alacrity.

Transfer deadline day is here. The summer window closes on Thursday evening in the English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s Bundesliga, France’s Ligue 1 and elsewhere. And with less than 24 hours to go, dozens of deals still need sorting out.

Cristiano Ronaldo, for example, remains at Manchester United, and looks set to stay unless last-minute interest from a Champions League club suddenly appears.

Christian Pulisic remains at Chelsea, with the club “blocking any deals and holding him against his wishes,” a source told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday.

Chelsea, meanwhile, has reportedly agreed to a deal with Barcelona for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on deadline day — and still could be active, even after finalizing a $80-plus million deal for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana.

Pulisic aside, other American players are also on the move. Ricardo Pepi on Wednesday signed for Dutch side Groningen on loan from Augsburg. And AC Milan swooped in to rescue Sergiño Dest from Barcelona, after the 21-year-old fullback balked at interest from Villarreal. Dest is reportedly in Milan for a medical, after which he’ll finalize a season-long loan, with an option for the Serie A champs to buy him next summer for 20 million euros ($20 million).

Elsewhere, John Brooks’ proposed moved to Mallorca is reportedly off; the veteran center back appears to have opted for Benfica at the 11th hour. And there’s renewed talk of Lille winger Tim Weah being a target for Spanish club Valencia.

When does the transfer window shut?

The window shuts on Thursday in all the major leagues, but the exact transfer deadline varies in different countries.

In England and Spain, the window shuts at 6 p.m. ET.

In Germany, it closes much earlier, at noon ET.

In France, it closes an hour later, at 7 p.m. ET.

Reecey Baby was not quite himself the first weekend of the season — not quite fully fit, as it was later revealed — but he more than made up for that with a stunning performance on this second weekend, starting the game in defense and finishing it at wing-back, continuing to prove indispensable. His performance really should’ve been rewarded with at least one assist as well when he put a goal on the plate for Kai Havertz. Alas…

Also, best celebration.

As far as Stamford Bridge debuts go, it doesn’t get much better than Koulibaly’s first game — except of course the result itself. So far so great from K2!

Cucurella looks tailor-made for this team, and it’s like he’s been here forever already. It was a big investment to get him in this summer, but so far, it’s looking like a wise investment as well.

Qatar World Cup 2022 start date to change as FIFA allows hosts to play first

FIFA is set to move the start date of the World Cup one day earlier so that host nation Qatar can play first, The Athletic understands.

Previously, the tournament was scheduled to begin on Monday November 21, with Senegal playing the Netherlands.

However, it is understood that Qatar want to play first, as has become customary for the host nation.

Their game against Ecuador is now slated to move forward to Sunday November 20. It will kick-off at 7pm (2pm ET).

England’s opening game, against Iran on November 21, will be played that day as planned.

The decision still needs to be approved by the Bureau of the FIFA Council, made up of president Gianni Infantino and the leaders of each continental confederation (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, and OFC).

Agreement is expected to be granted, meaning the World Cup will now take place from November 20 to December 18.

The host country has featured in the opening game of every World Cup since 2006, before which the defending champion usually featured in the first match.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar — controversial for the reasons outlined in this article — is the first winter World Cup to take place in the northern hemisphere.

The Premier League will break for more than a month after the weekend of November 12/13 before beginning again after the final on December 18. The top-flight season will resume on December 26 for the traditional Boxing Day round of fixtures.

Chelsea confirm Marc Cucurella signing from Brighton in £62m deal | Transfer window

Marc Cucurella’s move from Brighton to Chelsea has been confirmed in a deal that could reach £62m. Chelsea are paying a guaranteed £55m for the left-back and up to another £7m in add-ons.

The 19-year-old Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has joined Brighton on a season’s loan and Marcos Alonso is confident Cucurella’s arrival will clear the way for him to move to Barcelona. Alonso is waiting for the green light from Thomas Tuchel.

Cucurella has signed a contract to 2028 and Chelsea registered him in time for a potential debut on Saturday at Everton. The 24-year-old had also been a target for Manchester City, who were not willing to meet the asking price.

Brighton’s head coach, Graham Potter, said: “We did not want to lose Marc but he wanted the opportunity of playing Champions League football with a view to accelerating his progress to Spain’s World Cup squad. Of course we are disappointed to see Marc leave, but we wish him well for the future. He had an excellent first season in the Premier League, deservedly winning both our player of the season awards, and has been an absolute pleasure to work with.”

Cucurella joined Brighton from Getafe last summer and has made one appearance for Spain. Tuchel said one benefit of the signing was to ease the pressure on Ben Chilwell, who suffered a cruciate injury last November.

“He’s young, hungry, mobile and a very intelligent player,” the manager said of Cucurella. “It helps in depth and in quality, and it helps with Ben, to escape the pressure of: ‘I have to deliver and we need you absolutely now.’”

Brighton have allowed Shane Duffy to join Fulham on loan after signing Colwill, who spent last season at Huddersfield.

Official: Chelsea sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion

Chelsea’s latest big splash in the summer transfer window, taking our spending to over £150m, arrives with big hair and big expectations, as 24-year-old left back Marc Cucurella joins from Brighton & Hove Albion.

A dramatic week of this transfer happening, then not happening, then happening again, has now been seen over the line for a reported £55+7m transfer fee, with Cucurella signing a six-year contract to tie him to the club through 2028. In return, Brighton are also getting our young center back Levi Colwill on a season-long loan.

Cucurella had been on our radar for a while now, and Chelsea made a strong play (perhaps as strong as €30m) for his signature a couple years ago already, though we would end up signing Ben Chilwell instead and Cucurella would end up staying in Spain with Getafe. He would eventually get his move to England twelve months later, and impressing well enough with Brighton to be named their Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year, and earn his move to SW6.

Mostly a left back, Cucurella has played a decent amount of left-center back in a back-three as well, giving us plenty of flexibility on that side of the defense.

Chelsea’s move for Jules Koundé in danger of collapse as Barcelona push | Chelsea

Chelsea’s move for Jules Koundé is in danger of collapsing, with Barcelona refusing to end their pursuit of the Sevilla defender.

It had appeared that Chelsea were set to make Koundé their third summer signing. They were in advanced talks with Sevilla, who have been holding out for £55m, and financial restrictions had left Barcelona on the verge of pulling out of the race for the 23-year-old last Friday.

However Barça revived their interest in Koundé over the weekend and are increasingly optimistic they will win the race to sign the France international. The Catalan club, who have already beaten Chelsea to the signing of the Brazil winger Raphinha, have continued to tell Koundé to wait for them to submit their opening offer. It is believed they could end up paying a lower fee than Chelsea.

Barça’s persistence has raised fears that Chelsea, who have a five-year deal ready for Koundé, are set to encounter further frustration in their attempts to rebuild their defence. It is understood that Chelsea, who have pursued the centre-back since last summer, are close to giving up and could walk away from negotiations with Sevilla if there is no breakthrough soon.

Another complication is Thomas Tuchel is not entirely convinced about signing Koundé. There are doubts over whether the 5ft 10in defender is tall enough to succeed in the Premier League.

Tuchel refused to talk about Koundé before Chelsea faced Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Florida last Saturday. Chelsea’s manager expressed frustration with Barça’s conduct this summer, suggesting he may stop César Azpilicueta from moving to the Camp Nou.

Tuchel then gave a fiery press conference after Arsenal beat his side 4-0. The German is understood to be frustrated with Chelsea’s lack of progress in the transfer market. He has seen them miss out on deals for Nathan Aké, Matthijs de Ligt and Raphinha. There has been little progress in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over the France defender Presnel Kimpembe. RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Internazionale’s Milan Skriniar are other defensive targets.

Chelsea, who have bolstered their attack by signing Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, need to strengthen their defence after losing Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rüdiger on free transfers. They have signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, but Tuchel wants to bring in two more centre-backs.

However progress has been slow – Chelsea’s co-owner Todd Boehly has taken charge of recruitment on an interim basis – and Tuchel also made clear that his squad still contains players who wants to leave. There are doubts over the futures of Azpilicueta, Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, who has been linked with a return to RB Leipzig.

Levi Colwill, a 19-year-old centre-back, could look to leave if Chelsea make further additions in defence, and Armando Broja has seen a move to West Ham collapse. Everton and Napoli could move for Broja, though Chelsea are prepared to keep the 20-year-old striker.

As it stands Chelsea do not appear to be in a strong position before the Premier League starts on 5 August. The club, who visit Everton in their opening game, have experienced huge change since their sale to a consortium fronted by Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

An element of chaos was always likely after the end of the Roman Abramovich era and there is still plenty of time for Tuchel to strengthen before the transfer window shuts. Chelsea are monitoring Frenkie de Jong, but the Netherlands midfielder remains reluctant to leave Barça. Tuchel is also in the market for a right wing-back and is looking at Internazionale’s Denzel Dumfries.

Koundé deal to Chelsea still on, as Barcelona gazump claims are rebuffed — reports

A bit of a storm in the football “Twitterati” was brewed earlier today due to “late information” that Barcelona were able to gazump Chelsea a second time this summer, by convincing Sevilla defender Jules Koundé to join the Culés instead of the Blues. However reports in Spain from Mundo Deportivo and El Chiringuito — both of which would jump on the claim that almighty Barça, despite its nearly fallen status, are still giants of the sport — say the exact opposite.

Of course stranger things have happened in football. Manchester United certainly did not count on Chelsea overtaking them to take Pedro from Barcelona. Nor did Tottenham back when Willian, medical done and only a couple of days away from photoshoot with pen, paper and all of that jazz, ditched Spurs to move to West London instead. Koundé can very well do the same to us, given Beckham Law and whatever sweet nothings Barça are whispering in their ears while doing everything they can to avoid what can be one of the ugliest falls from grace in sporting history.

Still, worry not as Boehly and co. are proving themselves to be more than able operators of football transfers in spite of this being (in theory) their first rodeo at it. If not Koundé, it will be someone else just as capable or even better than the French international.

Charlotte FC 1-1 (5-3 p/k) Chelsea, Friendly: Post-match reaction

Another 90 minutes in the books for this preseason, and thankfully so as this one was looking in doubt for a hot minute while thunder and lightning descended on Charlotte, NC and caused a 65-minute delay to kick-off.

But eventually we got underway, and both teams came out with full effort and intent, with Charlotte striker Karol Świderski especially taking this opportunity to raise his level.

But Chelsea’s quality shone through in what had been a fairly even first half up to that point, with Christian Pulisic a beneficiary of a lucky deflection on a Michy Batshuayi shot, presented with an easy chance to slot home in the 30th minute.

Chelsea really turned it on after the goal and dominated the remainder of the half, coming close several times, but not quite able to beat goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina, who also put in a great shift.

A fully rotated (except for the goalkeeper) Chelsea lost all of that rhythm in the second half, and made much more heavy weather of the opposition.

Eventually we did put a couple flowing moves together in the final quarter of the game, but were unable to make them count. Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling drew one excellent save each, but it was pretty toothless otherwise in the second 45.

And then Charlotte won a penalty in the last seconds of the game for a share of the “spoils”.

And then it still wasn’t over. Confusion reigned but eventually there was a penalty shootout, just like the last time we played a preseason game here.

Still, after all that, at least no injuries and a bit more fitness.
