For Lionel Messi, France is perfect challenge as he chases immortality

AL KHOR, Qatar — This is how it had to be. For Lionel Messi to have it all — the win, the story, the fairytale, the ultimate stamp of immortality — this is the one.

This is the game, the World Cup final (Sunday, 10 a.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app). And this is the right opponent, reigning champion France, and there’s no valid argument to be made otherwise.

There could have been spicier and more tribal finals, like if the draw and the bracket had lined up to pit Messi and his colleagues against neighborly rival Brazil.

There could have been a more historically edged showdown for the trophy, like if Argentina had come up against a former political foe in England.

And there might have been a decider that offered, in most minds, a higher probability of triumph, had Morocco continued its dream run to make it all the way to the final.

But this is the most fitting battle for the title and the right way for it to play out. Messi, one of the most extraordinary individual soccer talents the world will ever know, will seek his destiny against the imposing battalion of a near-perfect team.

Breaking down Lionel Messi’s legendary performance

France, under coach Didier Deschamps, has cracked the code on this mystifying puzzle of how to get players who spend virtually all their time playing for different clubs to come together as a cohesive unit that works with a singular mind.

They did it four years ago in Russia, and they’re after it again, and they’re perhaps the only soccer lovers on the planet with zero interest in the sentimentality surrounding Messi’s strive for the one worthwhile soccer achievement to have eluded his clutch.

In ending the delightful run of Morocco at the semifinal stage in Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday, they cut short this World Cup’s most enjoyable underdog story.

Messi’s march toward even deeper posterity is a different kind of tale, one centered around superstar-level excellence rather than against-the-odds pluck.

Kylian Mbappé and France roll to final

Or is it? For the bookies will favor France this weekend, such is Les Blues’ level of domination and the way it seems able to handle any kind of obstacle.

Truth be told, if Deschamps is able to imagine a Messi-stifling game plan and if his players can execute it — like Germany did in the 2014 showpiece — the European side will deserve to retain its cloak of invincibility, and that chunk of sculpted gold they all play for.

Eight years ago, Messi endured one of the most frustrating nights of his career. He didn’t play poorly in the biggest game of all, but the Germans had an answer for everything he did.

Sometimes it was Philip Lahm crossing his path and slowing his stride. Or Mats Hummels refusing him space to turn, or Bastian Schweinsteiger tracking backward to restrict and harry him. When, at the end of that game in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium, a Mario Goetze goal was the only difference and Messi received the Golden Ball awarded to the best player of the tournament, it almost felt like an insult.

France will hope for a similar outcome.

“Messi has been in scintillating form since the beginning of the tournament,” Deschamps said. “He is picking up the ball a lot and running with it and is in great form. Of course, he is one of the best in the world and has shown that. We are going to try to counter Messi’s threat and stop him influencing the game.”

Did Lionel Messi prove he’s the GOAT?

They will do so with craft and complexity. Messi, because this is at the root of everything he does, will look for the same. He knows Deschamps’ mind is whirring with ways to stop him, even in the immediate hours following France’s semifinal victory.

And Messi’s brain is ticking over, too, imagining, predicting, analyzing with precision so that he can play free and prepared, with the natural joy that makes his game so globally loved.

Lionel Messi carries Argentina

There will be talk of other duels within the final and, yes, they are a part of it. But France’s master plan for Messi and whether the little maestro has one last World Cup hurrah loud enough to conquer it?

Well, there lies the contest. And the fate of the World Cup. And whether Messi’s career résumé will forever have soccer’s biggest prize listed on it.

Russian warship chases off U.S. submarine near Pacific islands, Moscow says

A Russian anti-submarine destroyer chased off a U.S. submarine near the Kuril Islands, forcing it to leave the country’s territorial waters, Moscow said Saturday, amid raging tensions over Ukraine.

A Pentagon spokesman, asked by AFP for comment, said only: “We are aware of press reporting about an alleged naval incident in the Pacific. We cannot confirm the details of these reports at this time.”

A senior administration official said Saturday they had no additional information about the alleged incident.

The Russian defense ministry said that during planned military drills the Marshal Shaposhnikov destroyer detected a U.S. Navy Virginia-class submarine in Russian territorial waters near the Kuril Islands in the northern Pacific.

When the submarine ignored demands to surface, the crew of the frigate “used appropriate means” and the U.S. submarine left at full speed, the ministry said, without providing further details.

The ministry also said it had summoned the U.S. defense attaché in Moscow over the incident.

“In connection with the violation by the U.S. Navy submarine of the state border of the Russian Federation, the defense attaché at the U.S. embassy in Moscow was summoned to the Russian defense ministry,” the defense ministry said.

The Kurils, which lie north of Japan’s Hokkaido island, have been controlled by Moscow since they were seized by Soviet troops in the waning days of World War II. The incident took place near the Kuril island of Urup.

It came amid soaring tensions between Russia and the West that have seen Moscow surround Ukraine on three sides with more than 100,000 troops, with Washington warning that an all-out invasion could begin “any day.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday condemned the claims as a “provocation.”

U.S. President Joe Biden warned Putin Saturday that the United States will “respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs” should Russia invade Ukraine. The warning comes as U.S. officials say a Russian invasion could begin “at any time.”

With an escalated Russian military buildup on the borders of Ukraine, Mr. Biden emphasized on a phone call with Putin that an invasion “would produce widespread human suffering and diminish Russia’s standing.”

The U.S. State Department has ordered non-emergency employees to leave the U.S. embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine.

LAPD Chases Attempted Murder Suspect On Freeways, Surface Streets – NBC Los Angeles

Los Angeles police were involved in a dangerous high-speed pursuit tonight of an attempted murder suspect on freeways and surface streets in the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood, but lost the suspect vehicle.

The pursuit began in the Encino area just after 6:30 p.m., according to the LAPD.

Police and two TV news helicopters lost track of the suspect when the car exited the Golden State (5) Freeway on Sierra Highway, near the border between Mission Hills and Santa Clarita, the LAPD reported. The search was called off at 7:09 p.m.

Speeds exceeded 140 miles per hour on the freeways, according to NBC4.

The suspect got on and off the 5 Freeway at times and onto surface streets in the Sylmar and Mission Hills areas

It was reported that police have possibly identified the suspect but information about that person was not released. There were no details immediately available about the attempted murder that prompted the chase.

It was unknown who the registered owner of the vehicle is. The car is a black Dodge Charger with Texas license plates.

NFL rookie rankings 2021 – Our top 10 first-years, Ja’Marr Chase’s record-setting start, rising corners, more

We’re seven weeks into the 2021 NFL season, and the first-year cornerbacks continue to flex their collective muscles. Three of them make the second edition of our rookie rankings. And while our top 10 has some movement, once again only one quarterback made the cut. It’s actually a pass-catcher atop the board here, as the Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase has launched himself to the head of the class as the season’s halfway point approaches. That shouldn’t surprise anyone — he’s setting records for rookie receivers and seems to have a deep-ball TD every week.

To build the list, we polled some personnel executives around the league and worked our way through the game tape. We also include who just missed the list and a few other names to keep handy in the coming weeks. Finally, we looked to ESPN Stats & Information’s Seth Walder to name an under-the-radar rookie to keep an eye on and ESPN Chalk’s Doug Kezirian to provide the best value bets for Rookie of the Year.

So who are the top rookies in the NFL right now, and why are they excelling? Let’s cut to the Chase, pun intended.

Jump to:
Top 10 | Just missed | Notes
Under the radar | Value bets

Stats: 35 receptions, 754 yards, 6 TDs
Drafted: No. 5 overall

Where to start? The 21-year-old leads the league in yards per catch (21.5), has three 100-yard games — including a 200-yard outing — and has the most receiving yards through seven career games in NFL history (754). Watch his routes and how he sets up more experienced defenders — add the Ravens’ Marlon Humphrey to what will be a growing list — and it’s clear this is a dynamic player who is going to require defenses to make a plan for him every weekend. And that means going beyond just putting their best cover player on him most of the time.

Stats: 6 starts, 88.3% pass block win rate
Drafted: No. 13 overall

Lists like these are often about degree of difficulty, and Slater checks that box pretty rigorously. He has already faced the likes of Chase Young, Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett in his first six starts. Garrett did overpower Slater for a sack in Week 5 — though he may have gotten away with a hands-to-the-face penalty on the play — but body of work is always what matters most, and Slater’s body of work thus far is top shelf.

Stats: 31 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 2 passes defended
Drafted: No. 12 overall

His versatility and the Cowboys’ need to change his job description at the earliest stages of his NFL career will impact how some may see Parsons’ success. The bottom line: He has made an impact at defensive end when the team needed him to play there — he has 10 quarterback hits — and he has shown the ability to work in coverage at linebacker, as well as hold his gap at the point of attack in the run game. Parsons leads all rookies in pass rush win rate at 26.2%.

Stats: 24 tackles, 1 interception, 6 passes defended
Drafted: No. 9 overall

Surtain has played 86% of the team’s defensive snaps, been tasked with a handful of WR1s and played with such competitiveness from down to down that when Ronald Darby came off injured reserve, it was veteran Kyle Fuller who went to the bench. Surtain does need to clean up some of his tackling in the run game, but opposing quarterbacks have consistently been frustrated far more often than not when they’ve tried to test him.

Stats: 28 tackles, 1 forced fumble
Drafted: No. 52 overall

Owusu-Koramoah may have difficulty holding on to this spot, given he went to injured reserve (ankle) on Oct. 18, missed the Browns’ Week 7 win over the Broncos and is expected to miss several weeks. But just before his injury, which happened on Oct. 17 against the Cardinals, he had played 91% and 85% of the defensive snaps in his prior two games, as he consistently showed top-end play speed to the point of attack with quality work in coverage.

Stats: 1,779 yards passing, 9 TDs, 6 INTs, 70.4% completion rate
Drafted: No. 15 overall

Jones has faced the highest degree of difficulty among the top 10 and showed the resolve to bounce back from his three-interception day in Week 3 against the Saints for seven touchdown passes and three interceptions over the next four games. He also got his first career 300-yard game in a blowout win over the Jets this past weekend. The game tape shows a little more progress each week in protecting himself in the pocket — especially against the unnecessary sack — and taking care of the ball.

Stats: 20 tackles, 2 interceptions, 5 passes defended
Drafted: No. 47 overall

Like one of his mentors — Broncos coach Vic Fangio — Chargers coach Brandon Staley wants competitive cornerbacks who can tackle and play with discipline in a variety of coverages. Samuel has been reliable much of the time and has shown the versatility to play in the slot or outside, depending on what is needed of him.

Stats: 7 starts, 96.7% pass block win rate
Drafted: No. 63 overall

The Chiefs have a growing pile of trouble in some places on the depth chart, but Humphrey is not on that list. He has played with composure and keeps his footwork clean. The game film shows he has allowed just one sack in pass protection, and ESPN’s metrics (via NFL Next Gen Stats) have him with just six pass-block losses on the season overall.

Stats: 31 receptions, 471 yards, 1 TD
Drafted: No. 4 overall

Personnel evaluators around the league expected Pitts to find his footing as the season moved toward the halfway mark. Consider it found. He has two 100-yard games over the past two weeks and a wide receiver-worthy 15.2 yards per catch on the season.

Stats: 32 tackles
Drafted: No. 167 overall

The former Illini defensive back finds his way into this spot because of the Raiders’ expanding portfolio for him in recent weeks and his ability to consistently have an impact in each of those roles. Hobbs has five starts, has played at least 50% of the defensive snaps in every game — including a season-high 93% in the Raiders’ Week 7 win over the Eagles — and has just one missed tackle on the year.

Just missed

Azeez Ojulari, LB, New York Giants

The second-round pick’s 5.5 sacks lead all rookies, including the 2.5 he had against the Panthers this past Sunday. He has added some counters in his pass-rush work, and the more he progresses there, the more sack-happy games he will have. His 14.0% pass rush win rate is second among rookies to Dallas’ Parsons.

Penei Sewell, OT, Detroit Lions

His potential is still clear, but the move to left tackle to replace the injured Taylor Decker has impacted Sewell’s quality of play overall, as he fights his way along the learning curve. After a choppy two-game stretch against Minnesota and Chicago, when he allowed four sacks, he rebounded with high-quality efforts against the Bengals and Rams.

Greg Newsome II, CB, Cleveland Browns

Newsome missed two games with a calf injury — Weeks 4 and 5 — and played just 21 of the team’s defensive snaps in Week 6. But he got the start and played all 50 defensive snaps against the Broncos this past Thursday. His play shows an attention to detail, and he has been flagged just once this season.

Javonte Williams, RB, Denver Broncos

Williams, who has 320 rushing yards this season, is a broken-tackle festival waiting to happen. We saw it recently against the Ravens, when six different Baltimore players tried to tackle Williams before he eventually was pulled to the ground. He has shown potential in the passing game, as well, with 122 yards on 20 catches. The only quibble is on those rare occasions when he doesn’t show his customary decisiveness.

Eric Stokes, CB, Green Bay Packers

Stokes has played every defensive snap in four of the Packers’ past five games. He has been flagged three times this season — all for pass interference — but all three were in his first two starts. Stokes has an interception and eight passes defended.

Keep an eye on: Osa Odighizuwa, DT, Dallas Cowboys; Rondale Moore, WR, Arizona Cardinals; Spencer Brown, OT, Buffalo Bills; Trey Smith, G, Kansas City Chiefs; Odafe Oweh, DE/LB, Baltimore Ravens; Kadarius Toney, WR, New York Giants; Sam Cosmi, OT, Washington Football Team; Pete Werner, LB, New Orleans Saints; Najee Harris, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers; Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jacksonville Jaguars; Pat Freiermuth, TE, Pittsburgh Steelers; DeVonta Smith, WR, Philadelphia Eagles; Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, LB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Greg Rousseau, DE, Buffalo Bills

Other rookie notes

  • Let’s just plan on a Ja’Marr Chase note in each edition of these rankings, as he is already getting folks to page through the record books. His 200-yard game this past Sunday was just the 17th by a rookie receiver. And with his high target volume and big-play ability, it’s likely a good time to remind people of Jerry Butler’s rookie single-game record of 255 yards in 1979. While Chase put up his 200-yard effort in his seventh career game, Butler did it in his fourth career game. And oddly, Butler did not have another game with more than 140 receiving yards in his 88-game career.

  • Packers rookie center Josh Myers, a second-round pick, was on the fast track up the rankings. He had played every snap in Green Bay’s first four games and replaced former All Pro center Corey Linsley, who signed with the Chargers in free agency. But Myers missed a game with a finger injury and then suffered a knee injury in Week 6 against Chicago, sending him to injured reserve.

  • Buffalo Bills rookie tackle Spencer Brown, an Iowa native, had joked he watched the Chiefs-Bills AFC Championship Game in his basement last January and then 10 months later he made his second NFL start in Arrowhead in the Bills’ 38-20 win in Week 5. Keep an eye on Brown, a third-round pick this past April who played eight-man football in Lenox, Iowa, in high school. He has shown he’s ready for the job on a Super Bowl-hopeful team after he was moved into the lineup at right tackle when the Bills shuffled their starters and Daryl Williams was moved inside to guard.

Walder’s under-the-radar rookie

Trey Smith, G, Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs crushed the offensive line portion of their draft; not only did they get the aforementioned Humphrey late in the second round, but they also nabbed Smith in the sixth out of Tennessee. Seven games in, Smith ranks 11th in both pass block win rate and run block win rate among guards this season. That’s a lot of value for a late-round pick, and Smith — along with Humphrey and veteran free-agent signing Joe Thuney — makes the interior of the offensive line a real strength for Kansas City.

Kezirian’s Rookie of the Year value bet

Kyle Pitts, TE, Atlanta Falcons

Cincinnati’s Chase is rightfully receiving tons of attention and praise, but Pitts at +1400 feels like great value for Offensive Rookie of the Year. The main concern is that Chase and Pitts play similar positions, so their stats will be compared to one another, as opposed to how voters might compare a QB and receiver. However, we still have two full months remaining in the regular season, and it seems like Pitts is just now hitting his stride with back-to-back 100-yard games.

Dow Jones Today Chases Nasdaq Amid Jobs, PMI Data; PVH, Conn’s Rally On Earnings; Salesforce Edges Toward Buy Point

The Nasdaq led a mixed open on Wednesday, after August hiring data came in below expectations and ahead of key manufacturing data. Biotech Moderna climbed on positive vaccine news. Earnings reports powered big early moves from Ambarella, PVH, Anaplan and Conn’s. Apple jumped to the head of the Dow Jones today, climbing higher in a buy range following an analyst upgrade.

X

The Nasdaq Composite opened 0.5% higher, while the S&P 500 fought to a 0.1% gain. The Dow Jones today got off to a weak start, down about 0.1%, as Walgreens (WBA) and Caterpillar (CAT) dragged at the bottom of the index.

Apparel maker PVH (PVH), the former Phillips-Van Heusen brand, topped the S&P 500 in early trade. The stock sprung 9.5% higher as JPMorgan raised its price target to 125, after the New York-based company clobbered analysts’ second-quarter estimates.

Casino owners Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and Las Vegas Sands (LVS) traded high on the S&P 500, after China’s Macau gaming district reported casino revenues in the city rose 234% in August. Vaccine maker Moderna (MRNA) rose 1.8%, after data released late Tuesday showed patients dosed with its Covid vaccine produced higher levels of antibodies than those vaccinated with Pfizer‘s (PFE) product. Moderna is an IBD 50 stock.

ASML Holdings (ASML) ran strong among IBD 50 stocks, moving up 1.3%. Also an IBD Leaderboard stock, ASML is extended and in a profit-taking zone.

Early earnings news also included efficiency and planning software specialist Anaplan (PLAN). It rocketed 15% higher as three analysts raised price targets on the stock after its late Tuesday earnings report. The Woodlands, Texas-based retailer Conn’s (CONN) jetted more than 10% higher on a second-quarter earnings win.

Among small caps, fabless chip outfit Ambarella (AMBA) led the Russell 2000, up more than 12%, with Stifel and Deutsche Bank raising price targets following second-quarter results that beat forecasts. St. Louis-based footwear retailer Caleres (CAL) also ran high on the Russell, bolting ahead 8% on strong second-quarter results.

Companies expected to report earnings after Wednesday’s close include Veeva Systems (VEEV), Okta (OKTA), Five Below (FIVE) and Chewy (CHWY).

Dow Jones Today: Apple Upgrade, JPMorgan Buy Point

Apple (AAPL) ran ahead on the Dow Jones today. Wolfe Research upgraded the stock to peer perform from underperform, and raised its price target to 155, from 135. Apple is climbing above the high that followed a breakout in June. It is in a technical buy range through 155.40, after passing a trend line entry. Apple stock gained 4.1% in August, and has a year-to-date gain of 14.4%

Goldman Sachs (GS) and JPMorgan (JPM) reversed premarket gains and slipped about 0.5% each. Goldman was the Dow’s top advancer in August, rallying 10.3% for the month as the 10-year bond yield reversed a four-month slide and rebounded 5.3% for the month. The 10-year yield held steady around 1.30% early Wednesday. Goldman stock is extended from an early August breakout. It has a year-to-date gain of 57%.

JPMorgan stock easily outpaced the overall stock market with a 5.4% advance in August. It briefly topped a 162.47 buy point in a two-month cup-with-handle base. Shares had eased to not quite 2% below that entry on Tuesday.

Econ News: August Hiring Misses Target, Manufacturing PMIs Coming Up

An initial look at hiring in August came in well below forecasts, as ADP’s August National Employment Report showed U.S. nonfarm private employers adding 374,000 workers for the month. That was an increase over July’s 326,000-employee gain, but will below estimates for 500,000 new hires.

Service sector employers did almost 88% of the month’s hiring, while goods-producing employers accounted for 12%. The ADP report is often viewed as a precursor to the Labor Department’s monthly payrolls report, due on Friday. But results can vary widely between the two reports.

3 Earnings Movers After Market Pause; Two Leaderboard Stocks In Buy Zones

Researcher Markit delivers its final manufacturing purchasing managers index at 9:45 a.m. ET. The Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing PMI is set for a 10 a.m. ET release. The Commerce Department’s July construction spending data is on tap at 10 a.m. ET. And the Energy Information Administration plans to release weekly oil inventory stats at 10:30 a.m. ET.

China Rebound Continues; Europe Climbs

China’s markets plotted another positive session, extending a rebound begun on Aug. 23. The Shanghai Composite gained 0.65% on Wednesday. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rallied 0.6%. That left the Shanghai benchmark ending August with a 4.3% gain, and up 2.7% since Dec. 31. The Hang Seng dipped 0.3% in August and is down 4.4% so far this year.

Among China-based ETFs, the iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) and the Xtrackers Harvest CSI 300 China A-Shares ETF (ASHR) were inactive in premarket trade. The KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) rallied 1.3%.

Europe’s markets were showing nice strength near midday, after extending their seven-month rally through August. Frankfurt’s DAX added 0.2%, while London’s FTSE 100 jumped 0.6%. The CAC-40 in Paris swung 1% higher. The SPDR Portfolio Europe ETF (SPEU) was unchanged in early action, after bouncing 1.6% last week following a test of support at its 10-week moving average. The fund is trading less than 2% below a 44.06 entry in what IBD MarketSmith analysis marks as an 11-week flat base.

Stocks To Watch: International Money, Chipotle, Facebook, Matson

International Money Express (IMXI) is riding a five-day rally as it works on a seventh-straight weekly advance. That climb lifted the stock briefly above an 18.79 buy point in a 53-week saucer base. Shares ended just a fraction below the entry on Tuesday.

Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) is sitting on a powerful six-week advance, closing Tuesday just below a 1,912.85 buy point. The buy point is in a four-weeks-tight pattern, a more bullish variation of a three-weeks-tight setup. The buy range extends to 2,008.49.

Facebook (FB) sits low in a buy range. It cleared a 377.65 buy point on Monday, and remains in a buy zone through 396.53.

Matson (MATX) reversed an early gain and ended narrowly lower Tuesday, after a solid second-quarter sales and earnings beat reported late Monday. The stock held just pennies above a 79.15 entry in what IBD MarketSmith analysis charts as a 27-week cup base. The buy zone extends to 83.11.

Dow Jones Today: August Leaders

After above-average gains for the market’s major benchmarks in August, half of the 30 Dow industrials stocks are currently in valid bases or are pulled back and testing support at their 10-week moving averages.

On the Dow Jones today, Apple and Microsoft (MSFT) are the two stocks currently listed in IBD’s Leaderboard lineup. Microsoft is extended following a breakout in June, with a 6% gain in August and up more than 35% since Dec. 31.

For more detailed analysis of the current stock market and its status, study the Big Picture.

Goldman Sachs posted the largest gain in August among Dow Jones stocks, rising 10.3% and ending the month narrowly extended above a 393.36 buy point. Salesforce.com (CRM) was next in line with a 9.7% advance. That lifted Salesforce stock briefly above a 271.02 buy point in a 10-month saucer base.

Shares were 2% below that entry at the closing bell on Tuesday, with a year-to-date gain of 19.4%. Salesforce has a 94 Composite Rating from IBD. The stock’s Relative Strength Rating is a weak 58, and its relative strength line lags well below its year-ago highs. This is not unusual as top stocks exit long basing periods.

Cam Newton chases Mac Jones for high-five as Patriots’ quarterback competition nears end

Cam Newton and Mac Jones are in the midst of a heated competition for the right to be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots to start the 2021 season.

Somehow, the two quarterbacks have remained cool.

After Jones found Rhamondre Stevenson for a touchdown during the Patriots’ final preseason game against the New York Giants, the rookie was getting high-fived going down the sideline. He appeared to miss giving Newton a high-five and the veteran quarterback stayed close to make sure he got what he wanted.

“I didn’t hear him or see him, and then I was like, ‘Oh, my bad,’” Jones told reporters after the game, via the team’s website. “That’s Cam for you. He’s happy and he’s a great teammate. I’m happy to be in the same room and just learn from him because he’s a great dude.”

Jones got most of the snaps against the Giants. He finished 10-for-14 with 156 passing yards and the touchdown pass to Stevenson. The Patriots won the game, 22-20.

Bill Belichick declined to say whether he was ready to name a starting quarterback.

“No, we still have a lot of decisions to make,” Belichick said.

The Patriots re-signed Newton in the offseason and selected Jones in the first round of this past draft. New England finished the preseason undefeated and have a Week 1 date with the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 12.

Latest on Biles; Ledecky chases gold

The United States collected a handful of medals on Tuesday, highlighted by 17-year-old Lydia Jacoby winning the women’s 100-meter breaststroke.

Wednesday could once again be another big day in the pool for Team USA, as Katie Ledecky will attempt to be the first woman to win Olympic gold in the 1,500-meter freestyle as the race makes its women’s Olympic debut. Ledecky enters the race as the world record holder with a time of 15:20.48.

Another gold medal first will come in the finals of 3×3 basketball. Team USA will face France in the women’s semifinal, and a win would put them in the gold-medal match later on in the night.

In men’s basketball, the U.S. team of NBA stars will look to regroup from their disappointing opening-game loss to France when they take on Iran.

TOKYO — Kara Lawson has spent five years in coaching, a profession that has taken to her to an NBA bench and presently the helm of the Duke Blue Devils’ women’s basketball program. Her name has also been floated in the NBA head-coaching rumor mill.

But the former WNBA All-Star actually started her coaching career in the 3-on-3 format.

“As my 3-on-3 responsibilities grew,” Lawson told USA TODAY Sports via video call. “I also became a 5-on-5 coach at the same time.”

It was in her first year coaching 3-on-3, 2017, Lawson helped lead the U-18 3-on-3 team to gold at the World Cup in China. USA Basketball then asked her to coach the U-18 men’s side. More success followed, and she began working with G League and WNBA players in her first exposure to the senior squads.

Eventually, Lawson became the official “adviser” – 3-on-3 teams don’t have official coaches like 5-on-5 teams do – for the women’s 3-on-3 Olympic team.

At the Tokyo Olympics, the team has been a bright spot for Team USA. The roster of four won their first six games before losing to host Japan. By then, they’d secured the best record in group play and a bye into the semifinals against France, which will take place Wednesday at 4 a.m. EDT. The gold- or bronze-medal contest will take place later that day.

“I feel like we’ve gotten better throughout the tournament and we’ve put ourselves in position to win, just like three other teams,” Lawson said.

The mentality heading into medal day?

Win two, win gold.

Steffen Peters, a 56-year-old equestrian rider, becomes the oldest U.S. Olympic medalist since 1952. U.S. gets silver behind Germany in team dressage. Peters has participated in four Olympic, winning a team bronze medal on two occasions (in 1996 and 2016).

For the U.S., it was the best finish in team dressage since the 1948 London Games, when the country also won silver.

TOKYO – A distraught Simone Biles pulled out of the Olympic team final on Tuesday, leaving in the middle of the competition after struggling to land a vault.

“After the performance that I did, I didn’t want to go into any of the other events second guessing myself, so I thought it was better if I took a step back and let these girls go out there and do the job and they did just that,” Biles said.

She said she has been trying to cope with the stress of competing at the Tokyo Olympics.

“I was still struggling with some things,” Biles said of competing Tuesday night.

“Therapy has helped a lot as well as medicine. That’s all been going really well. Whenever you get in high-stress situations, you kind of freak out and don’t know really know how to handle all of those emotions especially at the Olympic Games.”

Biles left the competition floor moments after she struggled to land a vault that is second nature for her. On the team’s first event, she shockingly bailed on an Amanar – one of her more difficult vaults – and just barely landed a one-and-a-half.

A visibly upset Biles talked with one of her personal coaches, Cecile Landi, and the team doctor, Marcia Faustin. Though she put on her grips to prepare for uneven bars next, she left the competition floor.

When she returned, she took off her grips and put on her warm-ups.

“This Olympic Games I wanted it to be for myself,” Biles said fighting back tears. “I came in and felt like I was still doing it for other people. That just hurts my heart that doing what I love has been kind of taken away from me to please other people.”

TOKYO — USA women’s gymnastics loses Simone Biles, then loses to Russia.

USA softball loses the gold medal to Japan, just as it did the last time softball was in the Olympics 13 years ago.

USA women’s soccer plays Australia to an unimpressive scoreless tie, moving on in the Olympics but not looking very good in the process.

All of that bad news happened within less than four hours Tuesday evening at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Three of the mainstays of the American Olympic effort, three of the most reliable U.S. success stories, all struggled at the same time.

This wasn’t the way it was supposed to be. Women’s sports are the backbone of the U.S. Olympic team, particularly women’s team sports. Women make up a majority of the U.S. Olympic team for the third consecutive time. Women usually are the biggest stars of Team USA, thanks to Title IX, the 49-year-old law that opened the floodgates for women and girls to play sports just like their brothers had for generations. It’s not a surprise then that the Olympics are the Super Bowl for female athletes.

Since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, American women’s team sports have mostly thrived at the Olympic Games. But in Tokyo, it turns out that for some of the nation’s best women athletes, it was just that kind of a day.
