Damar Hamlin injury: NFL players make huge donations to Bills safety’s charity, which has now raised over $6M

NFL players and fans alike have been showing their support for Damar Hamlin over the past day by donating millions of dollars to a charity that he created coming out of college.

The Bills safety was taken to the hospital in critical condition on Monday night after going into cardiac arrest during the first quarter of Buffalo’s game in Cincinnati. The Bills announced early Tuesday that Hamlin’s heartbeat was restored on the field thanks to the quick action of the medical personnel at Paycor Stadium. The team also announced Tuesday afternoon that Hamlin is in critical condition after spending Monday night in the intensive care unit at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

With players and fans watching helplessly at home, many of them wanted to help and they did that by donating more than $6 million to Hamlin’s charity. The 24-year-old started his charity in 2020, just after finishing his college career at Pitt.

Going into Monday night, Hamlin’s GoFundMe page had less than $3,000 in donations, but after watching what transpired on the field in Cincinnati, NFL players and fans sprung into action and proceeded to donate millions over the next 18 hours.

As of Wednesday morning, the donation total was at over $6 million with one of the biggest donations coming from Tom Brady, who gave $10,000 to Hamlin’s cause. Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife Ciara also donated $10,000 as did wrestler Chris Jericho of the AEW.

Not to be outdone, Matthew Stafford donated $12,000.

Andy Dalton, George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Davante Adams, Shannon Sharpe, Drake London, Marcus Jones, Myles Bryant, Andrew Whitworth, Lawrence Guy, Brian Hoyer, Lloyd Cushenberry, Trey Lance and the McCourty brothers (Devin and Jason) are other players or former players who donated at least $1,000.

From a team perspective, one of the biggest donations came from the Bills’ opponent in Week 18: The New England Patriots. Pats owner Robert Kraft donated $18,003 on behalf of his team while the Houston Texans donated $10,003, the Washington Commanders donated $5,000 and the Seahawks contributed $1,000 to Hamlin’s charity.

Several coaches and front office members also donated, including Raiders coach Josh McDaniels, Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and 49ers general manager John Lynch.

Overall, more than 205,000 people have donated to the cause.

“As I embark on my journey to the NFL, I will never forget where I come from and I am committed to using my platform to positively impact the community that raised me,” Hamlin wrote on the GoFundMe Page. “I created The Chasing M’s Foundation as a vehicle that will allow me to deliver that impact, and the first program is the 2020 Community Toy Drive.”

Hamlin has been holding a toy drive annually since 2020 and he recently shared a video on Instagram of his most recent toy drive, which took place just a few weeks ago.

GoFundMe even did its best to help Hamlin’s charity by featuring it on Twitter Monday night.

Not only did fans donate to his charity, but hundreds of fans also showed up to hold vigil at the University of Cincinnati medical center where Hamlin is currently being treated.

The Bills safety collapsed with just under six minutes left to play in the first quarter after taking a shoulder to the chest from Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. Medical personnel on the field administered CPR and used an AED to get his heart beating again.

The game was temporarily suspended just before 9:20 p.m. ET and then the NFL called for a full postponement just after 10 p.m. ET. The NFL has announced that the game definitely won’t be played this week, although it hasn’t officially been canceled.

Hamlin is in his second-year with the Bills and has been with the team since they made him a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Hamlin didn’t go into the 2022 season as Buffalo’s starting safety, but he was thrust into the job after Micah Hyde went down with an injury and his performance had been a bright spot for a Bills defense that has been one of the best in the NFL this year.

Trump news today: Trump tax returns reveal web of losses, write-offs, ‘disguised gifts’ and little charity

What we know about Donald Trump’s tax returns

Donald Trump’s tax returns have been released to the public, placing the former president’s finances and business practices in the spotlight as he is also facing calls to be criminally charged in connection to the January 6 Capitol riot.

The partially redacted returns from 2015 to 2020 amount to nearly 6,000 pages of what a preliminarily study appears to show as legal but creative accounting strategies to keep his federal tax contributions as low as possible.

An accompanying report by the committee points to what it considers a pattern of questionable claims regarding professional expenses, charitable deductions, what may be “disguised gifts” to his adult children, and canny use of real estate write-offs in New York.

Mr Trump was also revealed to have foreign bank accounts in China, the UK, Ireland, and St Maarten, and in his first year in office paid more in tax abroad than in the US.

The former president has reacted angrily to the publication of the returns warning that such a precedent will lead to “horrible things for so many people” and cause divisions in the US to “grow far worse”.

Trump had foreign bank accounts in China, UK and Ireland while in office

Donald Trump had foreign bank accounts in China, the UK, Ireland and St Maarten during his presidency, and in his first year in the White House paid more foreign tax than US, his returns have shown.

In 2017, Trump’s foreign financial interests were still apparently quite strong; he paid more than $1m in tax to other countries that year. But at the same time, his domestic efforts to shield himself from taxes were in full swing too, and he paid less than $1,000 for the year in federal income taxes.

John Bowden has the details.

Meadows won’t face voter fraud charges in North Carolina

Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff to President Donald Trump, won’t face voter fraud charges related to his 2020 registration and absentee vote in North Carolina, the state’s attorney general announced Friday.

Meadows, a former western North Carolina congressman who worked for Trump during his final months in the Oval Office, was an outspoken proponent of the ex-president’s baseless claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. Meadows drew the attention of government attorneys when details that he was simultaneously registered to vote in North Carolina and two other states surfaced.

Charity boss Ngozi Fulani says she has suffered ‘horrific abuse’ on social media

A charity boss who was repeatedly asked where she ‘really’ came from by a lady-in-waiting says she has suffered ‘horrific abuse’ on social media.

Ngozi Fulani, the British-born founder of the charity Sistah Space, expressed shock at her treatment by Lady Susan Hussey, 83, following an event at Buckingham Palace last week.

Lady Susan, who had served the late Queen for six decades, stepped down from her honorary role ‘with immediate effect’ amid a furious outcry after Ms Fulani revealed she had asked: ‘Where are you really from?’.

But Ms Fulani – whose charity represents Afro-Caribbean victims of domestic abuse – says her family has been under ‘immense pressure’ since the exchange.

Ngozi Fulani, the British-born founder of the charity Sistah Space, expressed shock at her treatment by Lady Susan Hussey

Lady Susan, who had served the late Queen for six decades, stepped down from her honorary role ‘with immediate effect’ amid a furious outcry

In a statement issued on Monday, she said: ‘The last week has been an extremely difficult time for us all at Sistah Space.

‘My team, family and I have been put under immense pressure and received some horrific abuse via social media.

‘Yet throughout this time I have been heartened by the huge amount of support we have received.

‘I want to thank everyone for that, and it has shown me that love will always triumph over hate.’

Lady Susan, the Prince of Wales’ godmother, is said to have repeatedly challenged Ms Fulani when she said she was British at the Queen Consort’s reception highlighting violence against women and girls.

According to a transcript Ms Fulani posted online, Lady Hussey asked where she came from, to which she replied that her charity was based in Hackney, North-East London.

But Lady Hussey went on to ask her: ‘Where do you really come from, where do your people come from?’

A stunned Ms Fulani replied: ‘My people’ lady, what is this?’ She eventually said she was of Caribbean descent and African origin, to which Lady Hussey apparently replied: ‘I knew we’d get there in the end, you’re Caribbean!’

Now plans are said to be under way for Charles and Camilla to meet Ms Fulani so that they can address what happened at the event and the issues involved, though she claims not to have received any contact.

According to a transcript Ms Fulani posted online, Lady Hussey repeatedly asked where she came from

Meanwhile, Ms Fulani told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: ‘Although I didn’t experience physical violence, what I feel I experienced was a form of abuse.’

Pressed on whether the Palace has contacted her via her organisation, Ms Fulani said: ‘No. I don’t know where this has come from but I’m telling you categorically – we have not heard from the Palace.’

Describing how Lady Susan also touched her hair, she added: ‘I was stood next to two other women – black women – and she (Lady Susan) just made a beeline for me and she took my locks and moved it out of the way so that she could see my name badge.

‘That’s a no-no. I wouldn’t put my hands in someone’s hair and culturally it’s not appropriate.’

Ms Fulani also said the comments were down to racism, not Lady Susan’s age.

‘I’ve heard so many suggestions it’s about her age and stuff like that and I think that’s a kind of a disrespect about ageism’, she said on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

‘Are we saying that because of your age you can’t be racist or you can’t be inappropriate?

‘If you invite people to an event, as I said, against domestic abuse, and there are people there from different demographics, I don’t see the relevance of whether I’m British or not British. You’re trying to make me unwelcome in my own space.’

Now plans are under way for Charles and Camilla (pictured) to meet Ms Fulani so that they can address what happened at the event and the issues involved

In 1997, Ms Ngozi met the then Prince of Wales when Charles visited the Limelight, a nightclub in London’s West End (pictured)

Ms Fulani added in her statement: ‘It has been an emotional whirlwind and we now wish to take the time to pause, reflect and learn from these events.”‘

As a new race row engulfed the royals, Buckingham Palace said it took the incident, at the Queen Consort’s reception on violence against women on Tuesday, ‘extremely seriously’ and had investigated immediately.

A spokesman said: ‘We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to establish the full details. In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made. We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes.

‘In the meantime, the individual concerned would like to express her profound apologies for the hurt caused and has stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect. All members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times.’
