Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Interview With Oprah Fetches at Least $7 Million From CBS

Talk isn’t cheap when it comes to

Oprah Winfrey,

Prince Harry and Duchess of Sussex

Meghan Markle.

CBS

VIAC 3.28%

is paying a license fee of between $7 million and $9 million for the rights to air Ms. Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex, according to people familiar with the pact.

The two-hour interview is scheduled for Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET, after the network’s popular news magazine “60 Minutes.” Sunday is one of the biggest nights of television consumption.

As part of the agreement between CBS and Ms. Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Productions, the network also has rights to license the special in international markets. In the U.K., the interview will air Monday on ITV. CBS is a unit of ViacomCBS Inc.

A spokeswoman for the couple said they are not being compensated for the interview.

CBS was seeking roughly $325,000 for 30 seconds of commercial time during the program, according to ad buyers, about twice the normal price of ad time in that time period.

Harpo also pitched

Comcast Corp.’s

NBC and

Walt Disney Co.

’s ABC, people familiar with the situation said.

Ms. Winfrey has ties to CBS. She had a brief stint as a member of the “60 Minutes” team and has been longtime friends with CBS News anchor Gayle King. In addition, CBS owns the company that distributed Ms. Winfrey’s daytime talk show.

Prince Harry and Ms. Markle said last year they would step away from Britain’s royal family. Their departure has been rocky. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as they are known, wanted to trademark the brand “Sussex Royal” but officials at Buckingham Palace said no.

The Sussexes moved to Montecito, Calif. and have focused on various ventures to create audio and video content, including a five-year pact with

Netflix Inc.

that is valued in the $100 million range, according to people with knowledge of the deal.

The couple no longer receives a stipend from Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles, or funds from the U.K. taxpayer.

Interest in the interview has heated up in recent days after clips promoting it were released in which the couple talked about why they wanted to leave Buckingham Palace.

Big ticket TV interviews used to be a staple of broadcast television. Networks would battle each other to land top newsmakers or celebrities. While TV news divisions say they are loath to pay subjects for interviews, they often end up licensing footage or paying consultants high fees to land the subject.

In this case, CBS News isn’t involved in the interview, nor is it being promoted as a news event. The special is being programmed by the CBS entertainment division.

How to watch Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Oprah Winfrey will be interviewing Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on Sunday night on CBS in their first interview since they stopped royal duties and since announcing she is pregnant with their second child. In a preview of CBS’ “Oprah with Meghan And Harry: A Primetime Special,” Meghan accused Britain’s royal family of actively encouraging lies about her.

Asked by Oprah how she feels about the palace hearing her speaking out about life in the royal bubble, Meghan replied, “I don’t know how they could expect that, after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that ‘The Firm’ is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.” “The Firm” is a common nickname for the royal family.

CBS News has confirmed allegations first reported on Wednesday by The Times of London that after Meghan married Harry in 2018 and moved into the royal household, unnamed staff members accused her of “emotional cruelty and manipulation,” forcing two aides to quit.

In a rare move, Buckingham Palace issued a public response, saying on Wednesday that it was “clearly very concerned about allegations in The Times,” and that its human resources team “will look into the circumstances outlined in the article.”

“You could probably only describe that relationship now, between the two sides, as all-out war,” Sunday Times royal correspondent Roya Nikkhah told CBS News. The couple’s interview with Oprah was recorded two weeks ago, before the accusations became public.

In another preview of the interview, Harry said his “biggest concern was history repeating itself,” an apparent reference to his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. His parents divorced in 1996 after a long — and very public — breakup. She died a year later in a car crash after being chased by the paparazzi. Harry was 12 years old when she died.

“You know, for me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you, with my wife by my side,” Harry said. “Because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been life for her, going through this process by herself, all those years ago. Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us — but at least we had each other.”

Harry told James Corden in February that he feels the British press is “toxic.”

“We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health… I was like, ‘This is toxic,'” the prince told Corden in an interview that aired on CBS’ “The Late Late Show.” “So I did what any husband and what any father would do — was like, ‘I need to get my family out of here.'”

Harry and Meghan’s interview comes as his grandfather, 99-year-old Prince Philip, has been hospitalized for more than two weeks. On Thursday, Buckingham Palace said he had successfully undergone surgery for a preexisting heart condition.

‘Mom’ To End With Season 8 On CBS, Sets Series Finale – Deadline

CBS’ praised Mom — the network’s longest-running comedy series on the air — will end its run after the current eighth season. Mom‘s series finale has been set for May 6 in its Thursday 9 p.m. time period.

This is the last season of Mom’s two-year pickup the Chuck Lorre-produced multi-camera comedy received in 2019. Also coming up at the end of this season was the current contract for star Allison Janney, who became the series’ sole lead after the exit of Anna Faris last summer.

Eight seasons in, Mom remains a solid ratings performer and an anchor of CBS’ Thursday comedy block. Currently Mom is CBS’ No. 4 comedy behind The Neighborhood and Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola. (The Neigbrhood and Bob Hearts Abishola were renewed earlier today; a pickup for Young Sheldon is expected.)

“For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” said executive producers Lorre, Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay. “From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series. Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on tape night inside Stage 20, or discussions at the White House regarding the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we take great pride in knowing Mom has positively impacted so many lives. We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers, and amazing crew for going on this journey with us.”

Mom also is a rare sitcom that tackles important issues. It started with Faris and Janney as daughter-mother duo Christy and Bonnie Plunkett, who, after having been estranged for years while both were struggling with addiction, attempt to pull their lives and their relationship together by trying to stay sober.

“Since its premiere, Mom has touched people’s lives by sensitively tackling weighty yet relatable topics, with a perfect, deft touch,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “Mom redefined what a comedy can be, and we are proud to have been the network home to this wonderful series. We are deeply grateful to Chuck Lorre and his tremendously creative production team, helmed by Gemma Baker and Nick Bakay, and the amazingly talented cast, led by the phenomenal Allison Janney.”

Mom also has been a solid asset for Warner Bros Television with off-network and streaming deals.

“Chuck, Gemma, Eddie and Nick have created a beautiful series with storylines depicting the real-life struggles and successes of those in recovery,” the studio said in a statement. “We are deeply proud of the Mom cast, crew and writers for the impact their work has had, and will continue to have, on viewers around the world, and we thank our partners at CBS for enabling these stories to be told.”

Starring Janney and featuring an ensemble cast including Jaime Pressly, Mimi Kennedy, Beth Hall, Kristen Johnston and William Fichtner, the CBS series began with Christy (Faris), a newly sober single mom raising two children, reuniting with her critical, estranged mother, Bonnie (Janney). Throughout the seasons, it grew to focus on the evolution of their mother-daughter relationship and the friendships and struggles of a group of women in recovery. It has attracted such recurring and guest stars as Yvette Nicole Brown, Ellen Burstyn, Kristin Chenoweth, Beverly D’Angelo, Patti LuPone, Joe Manganiello, Emily Osment, Kevin Pollack, Richard Schiff, June Squibb, Octavia Spencer, French Stewart (originally a series regular), Kathleen Turner, Steven Weber, Bradley Whitford and Rainn Wilson among many others.

The series garnered two Emmy wins and five nominations as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Janney. Most recently, Mom was nominated for three Critics Choice Awards including Best Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Ficthner) and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Pressly). During Season 3, the show joined forces with then-Surgeon General of the U.S., Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, on a public service announcement regarding addiction. In 2016, Lorre, Janney and guest star Osment were invited to the White House by Champions of Change to be recognized for advancing addiction prevention, treatment and recovery.

Mom premiered on Monday, September 23, 2013 on CBS. Created by Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky and Baker, the series is executive produced by Lorre, Baker, Bakay and Warren Bell and produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros Television.

New York City Releases COVID Vaccination Data By Zip Code – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – We’re getting our first look at who has been vaccinated in New York City.

The mayor says it shows disparities across the boroughs that they’re trying to fight.

RELATED: Storm Timeline: Another System To Bring Snow To Tri-State Area Thursday Morning

As CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reports, it’s a lot of data, broken down by zip code.

To see it, CLICK HERE.

Neighbors Sinny and Danny were talking on the corner in their Washington Heights neighborhood. Sinny got both shots of the COVID vaccine down the block at the armory. Danny… not yet.

“One, two, three,  done,” Sinny said.

COVID VACCINE

“On all the news, all I hear is that it has been very difficult… to get an appointment,” Danny said.

Washington Heights was one of the city’s hot spot areas. Now, according to just-released data from the city, 13% of adults in the 10032 zip code are fully or partially vaccinated.

Watch Andrea Grymes’ report —

In Corona, Queens – another hotspot – the numbers are worse. Just 5% of adults in the zip code 11368 have been fully or partially vaccinated.

“It’s not fair and it’s not equitable for communities that have been ravaged by COVID,” Councilman Francisco Moya told CBS2’s Jessica Layton.

Moya says the data released by the city Tuesday confirms what he already knew about major inequities with vaccine distribution and accessibility in the city’s communities of color. He admits there’s also an element of mistrust.

“How much of this is people who can’t get it versus people who just don’t want to get it?” Layton asked.

“Look, I think it’s a combination of both, but what we’re seeing more than anything else really is lack of ability to get an appointment,” Moya said.

The mayor isn’t denying the disparities or the disjointed appointment system.

“Folks who have more privilege are best able to navigate this process. Folks who have more confidence in the vaccine are going to go through more effort to get it,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

RELATED: COVID In NYC: Zip Codes Hit Disproportionately Hard By Pandemic Now Showing Lowest Vaccination Numbers

The map marks the most vaccinated areas in dark shades of blue. City Island, the Bronx, is leading, with 51% of adults there fully or partially vaccinated.

It’s 40% in Breezy Point, Queens, home to a lot of first responders.

City officials have pushed to put more vaccination sites in hotspot areas to address disparities. They say they’re dealing with not enough vaccine supply, plus too many people who simply don’t want it.

CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

“What we’re hearing is there are questions around timeline and the science and how quickly the vaccine was developed,” said Dr. Torian Easterling, chief equity officer of the New York City Department of Health.

“Just as we’ve seen a smaller proportion of vaccine going to Black and Brown New Yorkers, we see these geographic disparities baring out as well,” he added.

“This is about addressing inequality, doing something very tangible about it. This effort will not stop. We are going to go deeper and deeper into communities to ensure there’s equity,” de Blasio said.

Washington Heights Councilman Mark Levine says the appointment system is also a big problem across the board, and helps drive inequality.

“The system for making an appointment is deeply problematic. It requires people to navigate dozens of different websites, to sign up again and again, to do eligibility screens again and again, just to see if an appointment is available,” Levine said.

Levine said in a tweet that in some wealthy, whiter areas, 16% of adults have been fully vaccinated while some low-income neighborhoods of color have vaccination numbers as low as 2%.

Moya says there must been a better way to reach the most vulnerable, even if that means setting up tables on street corners in hard-hit communities.

“Put the Department of Health officials out there to help people register, then we have to do that and in multiple languages,” Moya said.

Tuesday night during a town hall with CNN, President Joe Biden was asked about how he will tackle the inequities in vaccine distribution nationwide.

“I also am providing for mobile, mobile vans, mobile units to go into neighborhoods that are hard to get to,” Biden said. “The fact is if you’re 70 years old, you don’t have a vehicle and you live in a tough neighborhood — meaning it’s a high concentration of COVID — you’re not likely to be able to walk five miles to go get a vaccine.”

Meanwhile, the City Council is holding a hearing Wednesday morning on legislation that seeks to simplify the appointment system.

Barcelona vs. PSG: Live stream, time, how to watch Champions League on CBS All Access, odds, news

Barcelona are hosting fellow contender Paris Saint-Germain at the Camp Nou for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash on Tuesday. Neymar won’t be suiting up for PSG after the Brazilian superstar suffered a leg injury last week, which means Kylian Mbappe will take center stage for the Parisians. Neymar’s injury also puts his status in the return leg in doubt. Lionel Messi and Barcelona, however, enter the match in fine form in La Liga, having scored five times last weekend. Barca are the favorites entering the tie, while both teams have delivered some underwhelming, inconsistent performances throughout the season to this point.

All Champions League matches are streaming on CBS All Access. Here’s how you can watch Barcelona vs. PSG and what to know:

Storylines

Barcelona: Which Barca will we get, the one playing well in La Liga or the one that struggles in cups? The team’s recent performances in cups have been underwhelming to say the least. Barca just lost to Sevilla in the Copa del Rey semis, needed extra time to beat Granada in the quarters, they lost the Spanish Super Cup final, and their last UCL game was the 3-0 loss to Juventus to lose the group. This team has been absolutely poor when it mattered most, and while most seasons they seem like a contender, they certainly don’t this season. A lack of quality in attack alongside Messi, combined with a leaky defense means this one could get ugly. They must be at their best to win this first leg.

PSG: Mauricio Pochettino makes his debut in the competition with the club after replacing Thomas Tuchel, and it comes after a concerning performance against Nice. PSG beat them 2-1 on Saturday, but the defense was far from sharp. Marquinhos gifted the goal to Nice with a terrible error, and their ability to quickly close down in the middle wasn’t sharp. But Marco Verratti will be available for this match, giving PSG a much-needed boost in the middle. If PSG can keep the pressure on Messi and keep their shape on the counter, they’ll be set up well.

Prediction

Barca get goals from Messi, but the weak backline gives up enough chances for PSG to finish the first leg as the favorites to move on. Pick: Barca 2, PSG 2

Trump’s impeachment attorney goes viral after exchange with CBS reporter

Michael van der Veen, one of former President Trump’s lawyers at the impeachment trial, went viral Saturday after an interview with CBS News’ streaming service called CBSN.

The lawyer, who had just won his case, was interviewed by Lana Zak, an anchor from the network, who he accused of trying to downplay Democrat impeachment managers who he said doctored evidence during the trial.

SWALWELL SAYS GOD IS A WOMAN

The interview seemed to get tense after Zak asked him about beginning his defense by stating that there was no “insurrection” at the Capitol, but then– in his closing argument, “seemingly admitted that there was, in fact, an insurrection.” She said he used the word during the argument.

MICHAEL GOODWIN: TRUMP IMPEACHMENT VERDICT — HERE’S WHO WON AND WHO LOST

Van der Veen shot back and said she did not understand the case. He said he only used the word “insurrection” when he quoted the charging documents.

“What happened at the Capitol on Jan. 6 was absolutely horrific,” he said. “But what happened at the Capitol during this trial was not too far away from that.”

He said the Democrat impeachment managers failed to do their homework and—desperate to make a case—”doctored evidence.”

Zak followed up his answer by clarifying for viewers that he was referring to allegations that the impeachment managers put the wrong date in a tweet, selectively edited videos and added a blue checkmark on a Twitter account submitted as evidence. Zak’s defenders said she was doing her job as a journalist to get her audience up to speed about what exactly van der Veen was referring to.

But van der Veen took her explanation as an attempt to downplay a serious allegation against the prosecutors in the case. He asked her: those allegations “aren’t enough for you?”

Zak told him that she is not a juror in the trial, but van der Veen tied the comment to the bias in the media.

“It’s not OK to doctor a little bit of evidence,” he said.

She responded, “I did not say that it was OK.”

“The media has to start telling the right story in this country,” he said. “The media is trying to divide this country. You are bloodthirsty for ratings, and as such, you’re asking questions now that are already set up with a fact pattern. I can’t believe that you would ask me a question indicating that it’s alright to doctor just a little bit of evidence. There’s more stuff that we uncovered that they doctored, to be frank with you.”

He said the media should be looking into the allegation in a “square, straight way.”

“Your coverage is so slanted…it’s gotta stop,” he said.

A senior impeachment aide said the inclusion of a fake blue check verification mark on tweets that were presented at the Senate trial was an accident. The tweets showed comments from Jennifer Lynn Lawrence who was retweeted by Trump. The two tweets that were exhibited included blue check marks next to Lawrence’s name. He also accused the impeachment managers of changing the date on a tweet in an effort to tie it to the deadly riot.

Van der Veen said the media, in general, is playing a leading role in the country’s divide because it plays for an audience, and politicians play for these news outlets for favorable coverage.

Van der Veen was praised by many conservatives on social media.

Zak was credited online for allowing van der Veen to discuss the issue. She also repeated that she did not attempt to make the Democrat case against Trump. Van der Veen was accused of unfairly mocking Zak, and also taking his microphone off during the interview.

He said her question was slanted and indicated that “it’s OK for them to cheat.”

Tessica Brown Recovering After Beverly Hills Surgeon Performs Procedure To Remove Gorilla Glue – CBS Los Angeles

BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA) – A Louisiana woman who has gained national attention after using Gorilla Glue in her hair was recovering Wednesday after undergoing a special procedure to have the glue removed from her hair.

Tessica Brown flew out to California Wednesday morning and then immediately went to the offices of plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Obeng to undergo what is expected to be an up to three-hour procedure to have the glue removed from her hair and scalp.

“The surgery went well,” Obeng, director of MiKO Plastic Surgery, said. “Tessica is doing well. She’s awake. The hair crew is doing her hair.”

After seeing her story online, Obeng reached out to Brown with the offer of performing a procedure to remove the glue using a special chemical treatment. The procedure would normally cost north of $12,000, but Obeng offered to do it for free.

“When I found out this was a reality, you can only feel compassion and sympathy for Tessica,” Obeng, director of MiKO Plastic Surgery, told CBSLA Tuesday. “The procedure will be to dissolve the polyurethane, which is Gorilla Glue is made out of,” Obeng said.

Brown’s ordeal started about a month ago after she ran out of hairspray and decided to use Gorilla Glue spray adhesive to hold her hair in place.

“I used this, Gorilla Glue spray,” she said in a video originally posted to TikTok.

However, Brown was then unable to remove the glue. She said she tried baby oil, cooking oil and shampoo to try to get the hardened glue off her hair, but nothing worked. She even went to a local emergency room, but the acetone wipes they gave her to breakdown the glue burned her scalp.

Obeng said the the procedure was very complication and comes with a recovery period of two to three months.

Meanwhile, the Gorilla Glue Company released a statement Monday on Twitter offering its sympathies for Brown’s situation.

“We are very sorry to hear about the unfortunate incident that Miss Brown experienced using our Spray Adhesive on her hair,” the statement read in part. “We are glad to see in her recent video that Miss Brown has received medical treatment from her local medical facility and wish her the best.”

The statement went on:

“This is a unique situation because this product is not indicated for use in or on hair as it is considered permanent.”
