Chris Pratt endorses billionaire Rick Caruso for LA mayor after seeing city’s ‘decline’ into ‘utter disarray’

Chris Pratt backed a political candidate Sunday ahead of midterm elections and gave his support to billionaire Rick Caruso in the Los Angeles race for mayor.

Pratt, 43, took to Instagram stories where he virtually stumped for Caruso, a former president of the Los Angeles Police Commission.

Caruso also served as a commissioner for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power under Mayor Tom Bradley in 1985.

“I’ve lived in LA for over 20 years. It’s been great to me. In that time I’ve seen what many residents here have seen, the city’s gradual decline into pain and utter disarray,” Pratt wrote online. “If you live here, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

“I don’t normally support political candidates. But in this election, there’s too much to lose.”

He added, “If you’re an LA voter, I urge you to vote for @rickcarusola. He’s a builder. He knows how to get s–t done. He’s the guy for our city. Rick Caruso for LA Mayor.”

CELEBRITIES WHO WANT YOU TO VOTE AND ARE ENDORSING CANDIDATES AHEAD OF MIDTERM ELECTIONS

Pratt’s mother-in-law, Maria Shriver, also made it known who she was voting for, and has long supported Caruso on Twitter.

“This race is super tight and every vote matters. If you want Los Angeles to be different than it is today, the choice is clear with @RickCarusoLA. Change is critical to the city’s future. It’s up to us – let’s go,” she tweeted.

Caruso, who was previously registered as a Republican, faces Congresswoman Karen Bass in Tuesday’s midterms. Bass is in her sixth term representing the 37th Congressional District following re-election in November 2020.

Prior to serving in Congress, Bass represented the 47th district in the California State Assembly for six years.

Bass and Caruso are running to replace termed-out mayor Eric Garcetti, but the hotly contested race has LA divided between the real estate developer (who is known for his hotspots including The Grove and The Commons in Calabasas) and former social worker who has advocated for Los Angeles communities for decades.

Kim Kardashian threw her support behind Caruso in May, while Katy Perry tweeted her endorsement for Caruso the following month. Snoop Dogg, Elon Musk, and Gwyneth Paltrow are all Caruso supporters, too.

According to government records, Caruso was a Republican for over two decades before becoming an independent in 2011. Caruso changed back to Republican in 2016 — a year when he served as California campaign co-chair for Republican John Kasich’s presidential bid — and then to independent again in 2019. He became a Democrat shortly before entering the mayoral race in February.

President Barack Obama recently backed Bass, in addition to Steven Speilberg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Danny Trejo, and former LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Katy Perry fans call out singer for Roe v Wade tweet: ‘You supported anti-abortion billionaire Rick Caruso’

Katy Perry has been called out for recently supporting “anti-abortionist” Rick Caruso after tweeting about the Roe v Wade ruling on Independence Day.

Last month, the super-conservative majority court ruled in favour of a Mississippi law that criminalises abortion at 15 weeks of pregnancy, while also overturning key precedents established by the 1973 decision in Roe v Wade.

Since then, the controversial ruling, which strips American women of the constitutional right to safe abortions, has been widely denounced in the US and around the world.

On Monday (4 July), Perry reacted to the ruling in a Twitter post which read: “‘Baby you’re a firework’ is a 10 but women in the US have fewer rights than an actual sparkler smh.”

The singer was referencing her 2010 song “Firework” in the critical tweet.

However, some fans have called Perry out over an earlier tweet expressing support for billionaire Caruso, running for Los Angeles mayor.

Perry’s tweet on 4 June read: “Rick Caruso FTW”

(Twitter)

Replying to Perry, one person tweeted: “Did you mean to time this up to be exactly one month after this tweet where you endorse an anti-abortion candidate?”

“Perhaps you should have done a little more research before supporting billionaire Rick Caruso, known anti-abortionist, for mayor of LA,” another user commented.

“Hypocrite,” one person wrote.

The Independent has reached out to Perry’s representatives for comment.

Real estate developer Caruso will lock horns with Democrat congresswoman Karen Bass in the runoff election this November to become the mayor of Los Angeles.

(Twitter)

On 4 May, Caruso tweeted he will “vigorously protect a woman’s right to choose” if elected to mayor of Los Angeles.

Soon after, reproductive health not-for-profit Planned Parenthood noted it was “deeply disturbing” to see Caruso’s “long-standing support of anti-choice individuals and organizations” in a letter to the mayor hopeful (obtained by TMZ) this May.

“Throughout your career, you’ve publicly supported organizations and policymakers who have taken aggressive action to limit access to abortion, overturn Roe v Wade, and defund Planned Parenthood,” the letter read.

“You’ve donated nearly $1 million to policymakers who put forth legislation that criminalized abortion,” it continued, asking Caruso to clarify his stance on abortion rights and “issue a public apology for the countless actions you’ve taken that put women’s health and well-being at risk”.

Caruso & Rep Bass Head To Nov Runoff In LA Mayor Race; Sheriff Vote Split – Deadline

(Updated with Jeffrey Katzenberg statement) The top two Los Angeles races in today’s primary election look to have both kicked the can down over to November.

Based on early results, Rep. Karen Bass and developer Rick Caruso will face-off in a runoff election in six months, as neither Democrat garnered more 50% of vote to win outright their bid to be Los Angeles’ next mayor. With 39% of precincts reporting, Caruso has 41% and Bass coming in with a stronger than expected 38%. Besieged by scandals and most of the political establishment, Alex Villanueva has survived just barely to fight another day in his bid to remain LA County Sheriff.

Hobbled by tonight’s close results, the top cop incumbent will face former Long Beach police Chief Robert Luna in a runoff election in this fall. Like Bass and spendthrift Caruso, the once progressive Villanueva, who is now a frequent Fox News talking head, looks to have failed to get more than 50% of the vote on Tuesday’s primary ballot. “The numbers are early, it’s hard to figure out where it’s going,” a slightly subdued Villanueva told supporters in East LA tonight and attacking the county Board of Supervisors, the D.A. and Democrats overall. “Even if it goes a long way, I’m built for endurance.”

“Now we don’t have the final numbers yet, but I have a feeling we are going to do very well tonight,” a smiling Karen Bass told a loud crowd of supporters in Hollywood on Tuesday night. “You have my back and I have yours LA,” the candidate added, mocking Caruso’s deep pocketed campaign. In his own speech tonight, Caruso spoke of a “great awakening” from Tuesday’s results. While never mentioning his rival Bass by name, Caruso also took a swipe at “corrupt officials” and “career politicians”

The mayoral results come after a very expensive primary that has split the entertainment community and its base of deep pocket Democratic donors. Despite initial figures indicating much lower-then-anticipated turnout, there were some reports of an uptick in voters dropping off ballots and casting votes in the final hours before polls closed.

Polls closed at 8 PM PT today.

Bass (D-CA), who Joe Biden considered as a vice presidential pick in 2020, has drawn the support of figures such as Jeffrey Katzenberg, who has helped bankroll and independent expenditure committee to boost her candidacy. In addition, Ari Emanuel, Steven Spielberg, Showtime boss David Nevins, Norman Lear and J.J. Abrams are on Team Bass along with the likes Ariana Grande and Jennifer Garner. Billionaire Caruso has been backed by Ted Sarandos, UTA’s Jay Sures and just last week Elon Musk. His campaign has also promoted his support from celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Snoop Dogg and George Lopez.

Tonight Katzenberg, who has made finding a sustainable civic solution to homelessness in LA a top priority, let loose on Caruso as a runoff became a reality.

“What we saw tonight is how a Republican, billionaire, developer bully failed to buy the voters of LA with his $40 million war chest,” the WndrCo founder told Deadline. “He can spend another $100 million in the runoff and voters will not be hoodwinked,” Katzenberg went on to assert. “Rick Caruso is just another version of Donald Trump with no real plan or solution to homelessness and public safety,” he added. “Karen Bass is a fearless leader who has the experience, the passion and the compassion our city needs.”

To a number of donors, Bass and Caruso reflect contrasting styles, particularly when it comes to addressing the two big issues on the minds of LA voters coming out of the worst of the pandemic: homelessness and crime. Bass, who built a community coalition in South Los Angeles, became speaker of the State Assembly and was elected to Congress in 2010, has stressed her experience in working the levers of power and bureaucracy to implement realistic solutions.

In the greater spotlight of November, with the balance of power in Congress on the line, Bass is expected to benefit from greater voter turnout, especially among the working class. Caruso and team are undoubtedly downcast at fall so far short of making it over that 50% line. Breaking a barrier or two, Bass would be the first female Mayor of LA if elected, as well as the second African-American mayor in the history of the nation’s second largest city.

Former Republican Caruso, the developer behind The Grove and other L.A. shopping malls, as well as the former president of the Police Commission, has shelled out over $38 million of his own cash and blanketed the airwaves promising to “clean up L.A.” In response, and with a far far smaller war chest at their direct disposal, Bass supporters have sought to taint Caruso as a Donald Trump in centrist clothing.

Moving into the coming months and November, both Bass and Caruso are expected to spend millions and millions more to try to seal the deal with voters in the City of Angels.

Tuesday’s primary also had a handful of other races to watch. Coasting to re-election after beating back last year’s recall efforts, Governor Gavin Newsom learned tonight that he will face Robert Dahle as his GOP challenger in the November election. Appointed to fill Kamala Harris’ Senate seat when the former Golden State Attorney General became Vice President, Alex Padilla easily advanced on the ballot to take on GOP lawyer Mark Meuser in a rematch of their 2018 secretary of state’s race, which Padilla won easily.

Other races were seen a barometer of a post-pandemic shift toward the middle in progressive urban areas. In San Francisco, a recall saw voters dramatically oust district attorney Chesa Boudin. The large margin rejecting Boudin, who will see a replacement appointed by the SF Mayor,  was a reflection of the wide spread criticism that his progressive criminal justice reform proposals have led to an uptick in crime.

All this state and local political action has occurred as President Biden swoops into the City of Angeles tomorrow for a three day visit. Avoiding the turf wars, POTUS is thinking of November in a different fashion, with the Democrats’ wafer thin control of Congress on the brink in the midterms. Ostensibly in LA to preside over the Summit of the Americas, Biden will also be raking in some war chest cash at a big ticket fundraiser at Haim and Cheryl Saban’s place on Friday, along with at another smaller and elite gathering for the DNC the same night. The president will also be seeking to get his message to a wider than cable news audience with an in-studio appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! soon after Air Force One lands at LAX.

Bucks’ Grayson Allen Suspended After Injuring Bulls’ Alex Caruso on Flagrant Foul | Bleacher Report

AP Photo/Morry Gash

The NBA suspended Milwaukee Bucks guard Grayson Allen for one game after his Flagrant 2 foul on Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso on Friday, Jan. 21.

“We disagree with the suspension,” the Bucks said in a statement. “We support Grayson and look forward to him rejoining our team for Friday’s game vs. New York.”

The foul in question occurred midway through the third quarter of the Bucks’ 94-90 home win over the Bulls.

As Caruso was going up for a layup, Allen leaped to defend the shot and collided with the guard midair. He also hit Caruso’s head with his left hand as the Bull was falling to the ground.

Allen got ejected. Caruso was shaken up but eventually finished the game. However, the Bulls announced the next day that he would be out six-to-eight weeks with a fractured right wrist.

Allen has a history of dirty play, notably tripping players on three occasions during the 2016-17 season while he was at Duke. The Blue Devils suspended him for one game.

Bulls head coach Billy Donovan alluded to Allen’s past when commenting to reporters following the Bucks game:

Here is Billy Donovan’s full answer when asked about Grayson Allen’s flagrant-2 foul on Alex Caruso and ejection.

It should be noted this is very uncharacteristic of Donovan to single out a player like this. pic.twitter.com/70UZFSMi85

The following day, Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports reported that the NBA was reviewing the play. K.C. Johnson of Yahoo Sports provided more information:

K.C. Johnson @KCJHoop

To be clear, the league is still reviewing the incident. The early indications that Allen’s ejection would be his only discipline were before news of Caruso’s injury. And league does take into account any injury suffered by the offended player. Stay tuned. https://t.co/DYguqR2cP2

In the end, the NBA decided that further punishment was necessary for the four-year NBA veteran, who has averaged 11.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this year.

Allen sat the Bucks’ 133-127 win over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday with a left hip injury. The Bucks’ next game is Wednesday at the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Grayson Allen breaks silence on Alex Caruso incident

Milwaukee Bucks guard Grayson Allen has become the NBA’s public enemy No. 1 after his antics resulted in Chicago Bulls fan-favorite guard Alex Caruso sustaining a fractured wrist. After receiving waves upon waves of backlash from fans across the NBA, Allen has finally commented on the incident that occurred between him and Caruso.

Allen addressed the situation via his own Discord channel, offering an explanation for his actions and his antics in the aftermath of Caruso’s injury:

Allen links to his Discord via his Instagram account, verifying that this is the former Duke product’s official Discord channel.

Within the channel, the Bucks guard responded to a tweet from Richard Jefferson, offering his side of the now-infamous incident which led to Caruso’s wrist injury:

“Also to this point. I stood at half court watching till he got up till see if he was okay. Then when I was back by our bench a teammate made a joke and I laughed. I wasn’t laughing at the foul,” Allen said in response to Jefferson’s tweet. “It was very unfortunate how it played out. I jumped to block it with my left and as I’m spinning went to grab the ball with my right hand not throw him down. It was a really hard fall and I’m glad he’s okay. If I could do the play over again knowing he’d fall like that I wouldn’t make the play.”

Allen is attempting to clear the air to his fans regarding what, in his eyes, truly transpired between him and Caruso. The controversial Duke product denied laughing at Caruso, suggesting a Bucks teammate had made a joke at the time he was seen snickering.

Caruso is expected to miss up to two months after undergoing surgery on the injured wrist. He will be reevaluated in 6-8 weeks.

Mavericks’ Tim Hardaway Jr. says ‘Bulls are back,’ but Alex Caruso believes improved Chicago not quite there yet

CHICAGO — After the Chicago Bulls racked up yet another quality victory Wednesday night — the latest, a 117-107 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks at the United Center that moved them to 8-3 on the season — their opponent took note of the way this new-look team has meshed so quickly.

“All I can say is, the Bulls are back, man,” Mavericks guard Tim Hardaway Jr. said.

After beginning the season 4-0 against teams that missed the postseason a year ago, the Bulls have continued their fast start as their schedule has toughened. This week they’ve won back-to-back games against the Brooklyn Nets and Mavericks and are currently tied with the Washington Wizards for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

And although Bulls guard Alex Caruso said he thinks it’s too early to make any grand proclamations himself, he still is encouraged by the way they’re taking care of business.

“We have games here and there where we’re just kind of finding ways to win, and I think that’s the sign of a good team,” said Caruso, who won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019-20. “I think we have a lot of ways to get better. That’s probably the most encouraging thing for me.

“Eleven games into the season, I don’t think you can say anybody’s back, especially for the prestige of the Bulls. They won three championships in a row twice. Being back, that’s a big statement.”

But the Bulls, who have not made the postseason since the 2016-17 season, are routinely making big statements on the court. They put an exclamation point on this game near the end of the fourth quarter with a highlight-reel, 360-degree dunk from Zach LaVine after a crosscourt, overhead pass from Lonzo Ball on a play started after one of Caruso’s career-high-tying six steals.

“Zo’s an incredible passer, QB1 throwing that pass up to Zach,” Caruso said. “And then Zach did what he does.”

Chicago shot 50.6% from the field and 48.4% from 3, with 26 assists to just 11 turnovers.

Even though the Bulls’ leading scorer, DeMar DeRozan, struggled from the field and ended up with just 17 points, the rest of the team stepped up around him. LaVine scored 23 points. Ball had 21 and made 7 of 10 of his 3-point attempts. Their defense held Mavericks star Luka Doncic to just 6-of-18 shooting for 20 points.

The Bulls are in the middle of a grueling stretch against teams that made the postseason last year and will begin a five-game West Coast road trip on Friday against the Warriors, who are an NBA-best 10-1.

But as the Bulls keep notching quality wins, they continue to receive respect from their opponents.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” Ball said. “It’s a brand-new team. Trying to build a new culture here; 8-3 is not too bad.”

Bulls Notes: Caruso, Dosunmu, Simonovic, Valentine, Williams, DeRozan

August 11th 2021 at 6:48pm CST by Dana Gauruder

Alex Caruso‘s four-year, $37MM contract has a $3MM guarantee in the fourth season, ESPN’s Bobby Marks reveals in an Instagram video. The Bulls used up $8.6MM of their $9.536MM mid-level exeption for Caruso’s first-year salary, giving them just enough room to sign No. 38 overall pick Ayo Dosunmu, Marks adds.

We have more on the Bulls:

  • Second-round pick Marko Simonovic had an impressive summer league debut, contributing 13 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes against New Orleans, Sam Smith of the team’s website writes. “This is everything new for me,” said Simonovic, a 6’11” power forward. “I’m coming from Europe and everything is different. But I feel really good and people tell me I look good. I think next season I can help the team.”
  • The Bulls have renounced their rights to Denzel Valentine and Cristiano Felicio, according to the RealGM transactions log. While that doesn’t rule out the possibility of re-signing those players, Chicago needed to renounce the rights to them and seven other players to complete all its off-season moves. Felicio signed with a club in Germany earlier this week.
  • Patrick Williams believes he can learn plenty from DeMar DeRozan, Rob Schaefer of NBC Sports Chicago writes. “He’s a really good wing in this league. Mostly, I want to be at the level that he’s at,” Williams said. “When he gets here, I’ll definitely ask him some questions about how he plays in the mid-post and kind of what he sees after an important possession. I’m definitely excited to learn from not only him but everyone else as well.” DeRozan was officially acquired on Wednesday.
  • In turn, DeRozan is impressed with the talent level on the roster, Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic writes. “Great organization. The history behind it is definitely amazing. But for sure, the talent,” he said. “Looking at players like Zach (LaVine), I’ve been a fan of Zach since he’s been in the league. Just looking at the overall squad. Seeing (Nikola) Vučević there, that was my teammate in college. So, it’s been great.”
