Police say Memphis shooting suspect killed 4 during rampage

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Memphis, Tennessee, said a man who drove around the city shooting at people, killing four, during an hours-long rampage that forced frightened people to shelter in place Wednesday, has been arrested.

Ezekiel Kelly, 19, who was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder in 2020, was taken into custody at around 9 p.m. in the Memphis neighborhood of Whitehaven, police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said. Memphis Police Director Cerelyn “CJ” Davis said charges were pending during a news conference early Thursday.

Four people were killed and three others were wounded in seven shootings across Memphis, Davis said. The rampage began at 12:56 a.m. Wednesday and continued to about 8:30 p.m.

There was at least eight crime scenes: the seven shootings and the carjacking of a Dodge Challenger in Southaven, Mississippi, Davis said. Kelly was arrested when he crashed during a high speed chase after the carjacking in Southaven, which is located south of Memphis.

That was about two hours after police sent out an alert saying a man driving a light blue Infiniti was responsible for multiple shootings in the city. Police said he later killed a woman in Memphis and took her grey Toyota SUV, which he left behind when the carjacked the Dodge Challenger in Southaven. Police said he recorded his actions on Facebook.

As the shooter terrorized Memphis, public bus service was suspended and a downtown stadium where a minor-league baseball game was underway was placed on lockdown. Friends and relatives frantically called and texted each other to check on each others’ safety. TV stations cut into regular coverage to keep viewers updated.

Police received “numerous tips” from the public during the ordeal, Davis said.

The University of Memphis sent a message to students saying a shooting had been reported near the campus. Rhodes College, which is about 4 miles away from the university, advised students on and off campus to shelter in place.

The area where Kelly was arrested was about 11 miles from the University of Memphis and about 12 miles from Rhodes College.

“If you do not have to be out, stay indoors until this is resolved,” Memphis police said on Twitter, before the arrest.

Police did not discuss a motive or release the identities of those who were killed or wounded. It was too early in the investigation to discuss how the suspect got the gun or guns used in the shootings, said Ali Roberts, acting assistant special agent in charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Memphis.

Memphis has been shaken by several high-profile killings in recent weeks, including the shooting of a pastor during a daylight carjacking in her driveway, the shooting of an activist during an argument over money, and the slaying of a woman who was abducted while she was on a pre-dawn run.

“I understand it feels like so much violence and evil to experience in such a short time,” Memphis City Council member Chase Carlisle said on Twitter. “We are SO much more than this.”

In February of 2020, Kelly, then 17, was charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, using a firearm to commit a dangerous felony and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, court records showed. Circumstances of the case were not immediately known.

Records show he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was sentenced in April 2021 to three years. Kelly was released from prison in March, 11 months after he was sentenced, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said.

Washington Commanders’ Brian Robinson Jr. says ‘surgery went well’ after he was shot in possible attempted robbery or carjacking

Robinson shared the news in a brief message on his Instagram stories on Monday, writing, “Thanks for the prayers! God is Great!”

Robinson suffered two gunshot wounds to his lower extremities and was taken to a local hospital, Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Dustin Sternbeck said. The shooting happened in the 1000 block of H Street NE, police said. Two suspects fled the scene and officers recovered a firearm nearby, Sternbeck said.

The Commanders confirmed the incident in a statement Sunday evening.

“He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where Team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian’s privacy at this time,” the Commanders said.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera visited with Robinson, who he said was in “good spirits.”

“He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best,” Rivera said on Twitter.

CNN has reached out to the NFL for comment.

Robinson Jr. was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. He did not play in the team’s final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens Saturday night.

Pursuit After Carjacking Ends South of LA – NBC Los Angeles

A report of a carjacking in the San Gabriel Valley led to a pursuit Monday on streets and freeways in the Los Angeles area.

The pursuit began before 11 a.m. after a report of a carjacking in San Dimas, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. Details about the carjacking were not immediately available.

The chase involving a Chevy Colorado was in the San Dimas area by noon and on the 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park a few minutes later.

The driver exited onto streets in the Alhambra area before getting on the 710 Freeway and reaching speeds of 100 mph. California Highway Patrol officers joined the chase and followed the driver onto streets in Commerce.

The driver slowed to speeds around 20 mph on the 5 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs before coming to a stop on the side of the road. The driver and passenger soon surrendered to deputies.

Chicago police shooting: CPD officer shoots, critically injures carjacking suspect, 13, near Cicero, Chicago Avenue on West Side

CHICAGO (WLS) — A Chicago police officer shot and critically injured a 13-year-old carjacking suspect Wednesday night on the city’s West Side, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said.

Chicago police were trying to stop a stolen vehicle wanted in connection with a carjacking from a neighboring suburb just before 10:15 p.m. in the 800-block of North Cicero Avenue, near Chicago Avenue. As officers approached the vehicle, the boy fled on foot, CPD said.

“The subject flees to a gas station parking lot and turns toward the officers,” Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said during a press conference Thursday.

Witnesses said they watched in disbelief as police sprinted toward the gas station at Chicago and Cicero avenues.

“All of a sudden, I see a little guy wearing all black get out of the car and run toward the gas station, and his hands were up. And I seen the cop run up to the boy and started shooting. That boy didn’t have no gun or nothing,” said one witness who asked not to be identified.

Authorities said one officer pulled his weapon, then shot the 13-year-old, according to Chicago police.

“The officer then discharges his weapon, striking the individual once,” Brown said.

“They said, ‘Put your hands up, put your hands up!’ The boy’s hands were up. There’s other people out there that seen it. I got it all on my phone — his hands were up. He didn’t have a gun. They shot him for no reason,” said another witness.
Alderwoman Emma Mitts, who represents the 13th Ward where the shooting happened, said it was unnecessary.

“Why would you want to shoot when you could easily chase him,” Mitts said.

Video shows officers moving the young boy’s body, which police say was in an effort to move him away from nearby gas pumps.

Officers rendered aid to the individual, who was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

“The 13-year-old did not have a weapon that was recovered from the scene. So now that brings up concern to why and what happened,” Mitts said. “Certainly we don’t want an officer out here shooting our children for no reason, that’s insane.”

At least one other suspect drove away in the wanted vehicle, which was later found empty in the 3800-block of West Monroe Street in East Garfield Park.

COPA said the shooting involved officers with CPD’s Vehicle Hijacking Task Force Team.

“Officers engaged in a foot pursuit of one of the occupants of the vehicle,” COPA First Deputy, Chief Administrator, Ephraim Eaddy said. “One officer discharged their firearm, striking the occupant, who is 13 years of age. The officer’s body camera was activated, and COPA is in possession of 3rd party and POD video that captures the incident. No weapon was recovered on scene.”
No officers were wounded by gunfire, but two were taken to a nearby hospital for observation. They were listed in good condition.

COPA said it is prohibited from releasing video and other materials in accordance with the Juvenile Court Act.

“COPA is committed to a full and thorough investigation into the officer’s use of force to determine if their actions were in accordance with Department policy and training,” the agency said in a release.

Brown said he was limited in the information he could share so far in the investigation.

“I cannot draw conclusions to an investigation that just started last night,” he said. “We’re not going to answer any questions. We’re not going to answer how many shots were fired. The ballistics evidence will say that. We’re not going to answer anything else about the shooting.”

The wanted car had been used in a carjacking the day before in Oak Park, police said.

On Tuesday, a man in a black face mask stole a car left running with a 3-year-old inside near Lake Street and Oak Park Avenue around 7:30 p.m., police said. The child was found unharmed about 15 minutes later inside the car, which had been abandoned in the 200-block of Madison Street, police said.

Police are still looking for a second suspect.

COPA is investigating the incident, and any officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a statement that said:

“I am aware of the officer-involved shooting that resulted in a thirteen-year-old being shot by a Chicago police officer yesterday evening. I have been in contact with Superintendent Brown and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, led by Chief Administrator Andrea Kersten, is actively investigating this matter. I have full confidence that COPA will investigate this incident expeditiously with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.”
