Warriors level NBA finals as Poole’s halfcourt buzzer-beater polishes win over Celtics | NBA finals

Stephen Curry scored 29 points, Jordan Poole connected from just inside midcourt to cap a huge third-quarter run and the Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics 107-88 on Sunday night in Game 2 to even the NBA finals.

n”,”url”:”https://twitter.com/NBA/status/1533631431003488259″,”id”:”1533631431003488259″,”hasMedia”:false,”role”:”inline”,”isThirdPartyTracking”:false,”source”:”Twitter”,”elementId”:”30030e9c-9919-4c79-95be-3f3679cdbb2a”}}”/>

Poole finished with 17 points for the Warriors, who outscored Boston 35-14 in the third quarter to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 23-point edge. And when the Warriors then scored the first six points of the fourth, the Celtics waved the surrender flag and emptied their bench.

Golden State also got 12 from Kevon Looney on 6-for-6 shooting, and 11 apiece from Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson. Jayson Tatum scored 21 of his 28 points in the first half for Boston. Jaylen Brown added 17 for the Celtics, but fought through a 5-for-17 shooting night, and Derrick White scored 12.

Just like in Game 1, a huge run decided everything. The Celtics went on a 48-18 run in the second half to decide the opener; the Warriors didn’t wait that long in Game 2, going on a 43-14 burst from late in the first half until early in the fourth quarter to turn a tie game into a runaway.

Curry had 14 of his points in the third, making three of his five three-pointers in the quarter. Boston were 4 for 15 in the quarter, were outscored 21-6 on threes and let the Warriors turn five turnovers into 11 points.

Poole provided the exclamation point as the third quarter closed, taking a pass in the final seconds, dribbling over the midcourt stripe, creating space for himself and letting fly. Curry greeted him with a smile and a hug, the fans at Chase Center leaped to their feet – if they weren’t on them already – and the outcome was pretty much decided there.

And for the first time, the crowd in the Warriors’ new building finally saw the Celtics lose. Boston entered the night 4-0 in the Warriors’ three-year-old home, the only team to have won there first four games in the arena.

The Celtics were bidding to join only two other teams – the 1993 Chicago Bulls and 1995 Houston Rockets – on the list of clubs that swept two road games to open the finals. Those Bulls and Rockets went on to win the championship, and 31 of the previous 36 teams to open with 2-0 leads ended up celebrating a title.

All is not lost for Boston, of course. The Celtics need to only win their remaining home games to win the title, though that won’t be an easy task against a Warriors team who have won at least one road game in an NBA-record 26 consecutive playoff series.

When Warriors’ Steph Curry realized buzzer-beater was first of career

Steph Curry has accomplished a lot since he came into the NBA in 2009, but amazingly, the Warriors star never had hit a buzzer-beating shot before Friday night.

Of course, Curry had hit several game-winning shots — seven to be exact — entering the night, but none with 0.0 left on the clock.

That all changed when Curry hit a step-back 22-foot jumper as time expired to give the Warriors a 105-103 win over the pesky Houston Rockets at Chase Center.

After hitting the shot, Curry ran towards the Warriors bench and he tried to run up the tunnel to the locker room, but he was stopped by Warriors senior vice president of communications Raymond Ridder and director of public relations Brett Winkler. They made him stay on the court for the celebration and subsequent interview with NBC Sports Bay Area.

During his postgame interview with Bob Fitzgerald and Kelenna Azubuike, Curry screamed in joy after finally hitting a buzzer-beating shot, and after the game, he revealed that it was the encounter with Ridder and Winkler that made him realize it was the first of his legendary career.

“It’s just how the game goes,” Curry told reporters. “I’ve hit some shots with 0.1, 0.4, one second, whatever it is. Big shots. But it’s a different feeling when it’s a walk-off. It’s good to know what that feels like finally.

“I didn’t realize until Raymond and Brett played the best defense of the night, trying not to let me go through the tunnel. It’s been seven years since they’ve been tested like that and they failed last time, I heard, with Andre [Iguodala] in Atlanta. He got all the way to the locker room and they were going to let that happen again. So that’s when I realized and kind of came to.”

Curry and the Warriors needed the win over the Rockets in the worst way. But couldn’t afford to lose both ends of the home back-to-back to the Indiana Pacers and Houston.

Curry said he “absolutely” planned to go up the tunnel if the Warriors’ PR blockade hadn’t been there. Considering the moment, this was one time he was totally fine having to stay on the court for a few extra minutes.

Pelicans’ Devonte’ Graham makes miraculous 61-foot, game-winning buzzer-beater to stun Thunder

getty images

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander thought he had just sent Wednesday night’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans into overtime. So did pretty much everyone in the arena and watching on TV. One person who knew it wasn’t over, however, was Pelicans guard Devonte’ Graham.

Following Gilgeous-Alexander’s incredibly difficult 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left in the game, Graham took the ensuing inbounds pass and launched a heave from just beyond the 3-point line on the opposite end of the court. We see this type of Hail Mary at the end of so many basketball games, but this time the prayer was answered. Graham’s 61-foot shot banked through the basket, giving the Pelicans a miraculous 113-110 victory.

Here are a couple of different angles of Graham’s game-winner. It certainly deserves them.

“When I was at Kansas, I used to shoot half-court shots every game, every practice — trick shots and stuff like that,” said Graham, who indicated that he was going to give the game ball to his mother or grandmother. “For me it was just playing around. You never know, you might get into that situation one day, just like today. And it ends up paying out for you.”

The game-winner was made all the more unique and exciting because of the degree of difficulty of Gilgeous-Alexander’s 30-foot 3-pointer that preceded it. This is the first game in the last 25 seasons that featured multiple tying or go-ahead shots from at least 30 feet away within the final five seconds of the game, according to ESPN Stats and Info. Graham’s 61-footer is also the longest game-winning buzzer-beater over the last 25 years.

New Orleans improves to 9-1 with the win, while the Thunder fall to 8-19. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 33 points on the night, while Graham finished with 15 points, all of which came on 3-pointers. None was more memorable, however, than the 3/4-court game-winner that New Orleans fans will remember for quite some time.

Rutgers shocks No. 1 Purdue on crazy buzzer-beater

Ron Harper Jr. hit a buzzer-beater from just inside half court, and Rutgers shocked Purdue in its first-ever game as the nation’s No. 1 team, winning 70-68 on Thursday night in Piscataway, N.J.

Harper finished with 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting and 10 rebounds for the Scarlet Knights, a do-it-all performance that concluded with the most stunning shot of the young college hoops season. Rutgers (5-4, 1-1 Big Ten) beat the top-ranked team for the first time in program history.

Purdue had gone ahead 68-67 on a layup by Trevion Williams with 4 seconds left. With no timeouts, Rutgers inbounded the ball to Harper, who dribbled across the half-court line and let it fly from the big “R” logo. The ball went through as time expired and Rutgers fans stormed the court.

Williams scored 21 points off the bench for Purdue (8-1, 1-1 Big Ten), which was a unanimous No. 1 in this week’s AP Top 25, the program’s first time atop the poll. Its stay will be brief.

Gonzaga’s Unforgettable Shot: Bank Shot Buzzer-Beater Sinks UCLA, Saves Perfect Season

Now that is what it’s all about. That. Those final 3 seconds of Gonzaga-UCLA, or really, all of it, because it was an exquisite basketball game, back and forth, forth and back, much better than anyone expected, and now this shot—a 40-foot bank shot, not far from mid-court, Lordy! — elevated it into something even greater, an all-timer, a game you’ll remember as long as you breathe.

Really. I know that sounds like the sort of overcooked hyperbole blowhards like to say after watching a phenomenal last-second, game-winning, championship-qualifying shot, but I’m afraid this blowharding might actually be true.

It was that good. Watch it now if you didn’t watch it before. I’ll wait right here.

Did you yell in your TV room? Of course you yelled. The yell sounded different in Westwood. It sounded different up in Spokane. But it was a yell.

2021 NCAA Final Four score: Gonzaga survives UCLA with buzzer-beater in OT, advances to national title game

Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs banked in a desperation 3-pointer to beat the buzzer in overtime to give the Zags a 93-90 victory over upset-minded UCLA in a memorable Final Four game Saturday. No. 1 seed Gonzaga had won 29 of its 30 games by double-digits entering the showdown with the No. 11 seed Bruins, but the Bulldogs finally had to survive a thriller to keep their perfect record intact.

The Bruins gave the Zags everything they could handle before Gonzaga squeaked out the victory. UCLA’s Johnny Juzang tied it at 90 with a lay-up just seconds before Suggs’ heroics.

The Bulldogs, who are the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, will advance to play No. 2 overall seed Baylor in Monday night’s national title game.

After scoring 28 points in a 51-49 victory Michigan in the Elite Eight on Tuesday, Juzang turned in another spectacular performance for UCLA with 29 points. But the 6-foot-6 sophomore was whistled for a charge with 1.1 seconds left in regulation while driving for a potential game-winning shot.

That call sent the game to overtime, and from there, Gonzaga center Drew Timme took over with six quick points in the opening two minutes of overtime. The star sophomore finished with 25 points for the Bulldogs, who improved to 31-0 with the victory.

Suggs is special

Suggs’ 3-pointer at the buzzer will go down in history, and rightfully so. But it wasn’t the first time that Suggs rescued Gonzaga. The star freshman registered the highlight of regulation when he came from behind to block Cody Riley’s dunk attempt with 2:00 remaining.

Then, he collected the rebound and rifled a spectacular bounce pass to Timme, who caught it in stride and dunked. The four-point swing put Gonzaga ahead by two and helped it gain momentum it would need to avoid a loss in regulation.

Lovable in defeat

The Bruins’ magical run began in the First Four with an overtime victory over Michigan State, and it ended with an overtime loss in the Final Four. In total, four of the Bruins’ final seven games went to overtime this season, dating back to a loss against Oregon State in the Pac-12 Tournament.

It’s hard to fathom a program with 11 national championships adopting the role of lovable underdog, but this group of UCLA players fit the bill. In particular, Juzang turned in a memorable NCAA Tournament. He became just the second player in UCLA’s storied history to record three 25-point games in a single NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

History still available

Gonzaga is seeking to become the first undefeated national champion since Indiana in 1976, and Saturday’s narrow victory protected that opportunity. But Saturday may also have been an indication that the Zags are not invincible. After ripping through a series of overmatched opponents in the West Coast Conference and handling their first four NCAA Tournament opponents without much trouble, the Bulldogs were tested against UCLA.

The Bruins thrived in the mid-range game and proved that some of Gonzaga’s perimeter players are not great 1-on-1 defenders. If Juzang and UCLA’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. can break down the Bulldogs off the dribble, then Butler’s deep trio of guards could have success in attacking the basket and getting to favorable shooting spots as well.

No. 2 Texas A&M survives on OT buzzer-beater

No. 2 Texas A&M escaped again. The Aggies are into the Sweet 16 on an overtime buzzer-beating drive by Jordan Nixon to defeat No. 7 Iowa State, 84-82. Nixon also made the tough drive to tie it at the end of regulation and scored seven of the Aggies’ nine overtime points.

The overtime period was the first time the Aggies led the entire contest and they trailed by as many as 12 points. It’s the second time in as man tournament games the SEC regular season champions have found themselves in a deep hole. They were nearly the first No. 2 seed to be upset by a No. 15 seed in a first round close call against Troy.

Nixon came out and drilled a 3-pointer in overtime to get the Aggies going. The following minutes were a frenetic back-and-forth until Nixon’s final buckets.

She tied it at 82 with 1:38 remaining and Texas A&M had a chance at an easy lead, but missed the opportunity at a transition basket by pulling up for 3. The defense stood up and held on two stops, the last with five seconds left as Nixon took it the length of the court.

She drove right into the paint and hit it at the buzzer.

Nixon scored a game-high 35 points that also tied Iowa’s Caitlin Clark for a 2021 tournament high. Nixon was 16-for-28 from the floor with seven assists, two rebounds, one steal and one block. Her post-game interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe was perfect for March Madness.

Nixon has done this before. She made a running shot with under a minute left earlier this season to lift Texas A&M over a ranked Arkansas squad.

Ciera Johnson scored 19 points for Texas A&M on 8-for-12 shooting and Aaliyah Wilson added 11. N’dea Jones neared a double-double with 14 rebounds, nine points and four blocks. The bench added only three points and two rebounds, all from junior Alex Morris.

Texas A&M forces overtime

The Aggies never took the lead in the fourth quarter, but came within one on a layup by Ciera Johnson with 1:02 left. Ashley Joens, Iowa State’s machine down low, answered by working for a tough basket inside and earning the and-1 to push a one-point lead into four with 39 seconds remaining. After an Aggies layup by N’dea Jones, Joens hit two more free throws to keep the pressure on.

Nixon hit a deep jumper to pull Texas A&M within two again with 14 seconds still on the clock and made a tough drive for another with five seconds left that tied it.

The Aggies defense held for three inbound plays to close the game and force additional time. Texas A&M will face No. 3 seed Arizona, which itself came down to the end against No. 11 BYU, in the Sweet 16.

Iowa State controlled contest

The Cyclones controlled the game from the tip and appeared heading to the Sweet 16 with a massive upset in the bracket. The Aggies couldn’t contain Ashley Joens and fell behind by 10 early. It was a margin the Cyclones held until late in the fourth quarter.

Joens closed with 32 points, 18 rebounds and three assists. She became the fourth Big 12 player with 30 points and 15 rebounds in a tournament game since 2000. Joens joins Courtney Paris, who did it twice for Oklahoma, and former Baylor stars Brittney Griner and Lauren Cox.

Iowa State built its early lead with six 3-pointers on seven attempts in the first quarter. They were 16-of-30 (53.3 percent) at games end, out-shooting the team’s 35.8 percent mark on the year. The Cyclones controlled the boards, 50-38, but struggled with 24 turnovers. Those can into play late in the tight contest and included a few shot clock violations and steals when they could have pushed the lead.

Damian Lillard’s buzzer-beater stuns Bulls

Not even the buzzer could put an end to Dame Time at the United Center.

Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard went off for 44 points against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, finishing with one of the season’s wildest buzzer-beaters.

With only 6.2 seconds remaining and the Blazers down 122-120, a jump ball made its way into Lillard’s hands after an awkward series of exchanges. Lillard took the ball, ran a few steps to his right and uncorked an off-balance step-back 3-pointer over Bulls 7-footer Lauri Markkanen.

It was the kind of shot only a few players on the planet have a prayer of making. Fortunately for the Blazers, Lillard is absolutely one of those players. The All-Star point guard had been making those kind of shots all game:

“I had a big on me, got some space, hit a step-back and that was game,” Lillard said of his game-winner after the game. “In these situations, I usually look up at the clock and I get real ambitious … a lot of times it doesn’t work out, but today it just happened to work out.”

Lillard finished 15-of-26 from the field and 8-of-17 from deep, while also chipping in nine assists and five rebounds.

The fun continued in the Blazers locker room, where Lillard was soaked as he entered through the door.

The win improves the Blazers’ record to 10-8, good for seventh place in the Western Conference.
