George Michael, Kate Bush, White Stripes and 2023 Hall of Fame Ballot – Rolling Stone

The nominations of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023 are in, and the list features George Michael, Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, the White Stripes, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, the Spinners, A Tribe Called Quest, and Warren Zevon. The top vote-getters will be announced in May and inducted in the fall.

“This remarkable list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

To be eligible for this year’s ballot, each nominee’s first single or album had to have been released in 1998 or earlier. Eight of the nominees (Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes, and Warren Zevon) are on the ballot for the first time. Missy Elliott and the White Stripes are appearing in their first year of eligibility.

This is the fifth nomination for Rage Against The Machine, the fourth for Kate Bush and the Spinners, and the second for Iron Maiden and A Tribe Called Quest.

Listing Joy Division and New Order as a single act may seem odd since they’re technically two different bands. But New Order was formed by the three surviving members of Joy Division almost immediately after the suicide of frontman Ian Curtis in 1980. The only difference was the addition of keyboardist Gillian Gilbert a few months later. (In 2012, the Hall of Fame brought in the Small Faces and the Faces as one unit even though they had two different singers and rather different sounds. It’s easy to argue Joy Division and New Order have more shared DNA than those two groups.)

The Hall of Fame is one of the few places outside of a courtroom where bitterly estranged bandmates are forced back into the same room. That has led to amazing reunions over the years of dormant bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, the Police, and the Doors. This class presents an opportunity for New Order to perform with former bassist Peter Hook for the first time since 2006 and for Jack White and Meg White to play together again as the White Stripes for the first time since the final episode of Late Night With Conan O’Brien in 2009.

It’s also a chance for the surviving members of A Tribe Called Quest and Soundgarden to play together again. Rage Against The Machine are on indefinite hiatus as frontman Zack de la Rocha recovers from a severe tear to his left Achilles tendon he suffered during the second night of the group’s 2022 reunion tour, but it’s possible they could play as well.

Trending

The 2023 class will be chosen by a group of over 1,000 artists, historians, and members of the music industry the Rock Hall has selected as voters. In recent years, the Hall of Fame has given The Award for Musical Excellence, the Ahmet Ertegun Award, and Early Influence Award to a wide selection of artists that didn’t appear on the ballot. In 2022, seven acts from the ballot were formally inducted, and another seven were given other awards.

The last Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held on Nov. 5, 2022, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. There’s no word on where it will be held this year.

Billy Bush Caught Making Sexual Comments About Kendall Jenner – Deadline

Several years after his infamous lewd conversation with Donald Trump for Access Hollywood, Billy Bush was caught on tape making a sexual comment about Kendall Jenner during a recent taping of .

The Daily Beast reported Friday that it had obtained audio from an Oct. 31 Extra taping where Bush jokes with staffers about Jenner’s Toy Story-inspired Halloween costume. After asking someone for the name of her character, to which he was informed that she was dressed as Jessie the cowgirl, he says: “Kendall goes as Jessie and, believe me, there were a lot of woodies.”

The comment didn’t make it into the segment that aired on Halloween. While the Extra host did comment on Jenner’s costume in the final segment, he only went as far as to say, “it’s going to be hard to see Toy Story the same way ever again.”

In a statement to Deadline, a spokesperson for Telepictures, the division of Warner Bros. Television that produces Extra, said: “As with many forms of production in the entertainment industry, the show’s creative process allows the flexibility to try different jokes and banter. In the end, some material lands on the cutting room floor, including remarks that may be too edgy to air on broadcast television.”

This is not the first time that Bush has been caught on tape in a similar situation. Just weeks before the 2016 presidential election, while Bush was an anchor for NBC’s Today, audio surfaced from a 2005 conversation between Bush and Trump — who was the GOP presidential candidate at the time of the leak — about groping women.

In the recording, Trump says, “I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, [women] let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy.” Bush, who was working for Access Hollywood at the time of the conversation, can be heard responding: “Whatever you want.”

Bush was suspended from Today and eventually fired following the audio leak. In an apology shortly after the incident, he said: “Obviously I’m embarrassed and ashamed. It’s no excuse, but this happened 11 years ago — I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I’m very sorry.” He joined Extra in 2019.

Jenna Bush Hager Had All Eyes on Her After Showing Up in the Ultimate Sexy Holiday Look

“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.”

Jenna Bush Hager always steps out on to the Today show stage looking incredible — but even more so for special occasions.

To toast the holiday season, Jenna and fellow co-host Hoda Kotb starred in a promotional Instagram video for Today With Hoda and Jenna. While both women looked stunning standing alongside a decorated Christmas tree, folks were particularly enamored with Jenna’s elegant yet sexy blue velvet dress. The festive look featured long sleeves, a plunging neckline and a high-low style hem. Adding a little more flair to the ensemble, the left side of Jenna’s frock was cinched together with decorative gold buttons.

Due to the boldness of the dress, Jenna’s accessories were a bit more demure. She wore a pair of strapped black heels and her signature layered necklaces. The Sisters First author also wore natural makeup for the cameras.

Because Today show fans love to see Jenna’s ever-changing wardrobe, they instantly reacted to seeing her in the holiday outfit. Many didn’t hesitate to let her (and Hoda) know how their thoughts.

“The moves are questionable BUT the dresses SLAY 🙌🙌👏👏 Love you both ❤️,” one person wrote in the Instagram comments section. “Love your dresses today! You both look beautiful! 😊👍,” another follower noted. “Love the dress Jenna,” a different user added.

This is just another example of Jenna being adventurous with the attire she wears on daytime TV. What’s more, this isn’t the first time she’s worn velvet during the holiday season. Back in November, she paid an homage to 1970s fashion by wearing a burgundy velvet suit during a live taping.

If you were wondering where you can get your own version of Jenna’s dress, the NBC show revealed she chose a piece from Zara. While you can purchase the co-anchor’s exact look online, we also provided you with more options at an affordable price. Happy shopping!

Kate Bush Reflects on ‘Running Up That Hill’ Success in Christmas Note – Billboard

Kate Bush is looking back on the ups and downs of 2022.

In a bittersweet message titled “Merry Christmas” on her website, the 64-year-old U.K. pop icon reflects on the pains of the the past year, including the war in Ukraine and death of Queen Elizabeth II, but also shares thanks for the renewed success of her classic 1985 song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” and expresses hope for a brighter 2023.

“I don’t think any of us have ever known a year like this one,” Bush begins her note. “Life became incredibly frightening in the pandemic, but just as we think it might be over soon, it seems to keep going. It’s a bombardment — the horrific war in Ukraine, the famines, the droughts, the floods… and we lost our Queen.”

The singer-songwriter then turns to a more uplifting topic: the resurgence of “Running Up That Hill” on the Billboard charts, thanks to a high-profile synch in the fourth season of the 1980s-set sci-fi Netflix series Stranger Things.

“It’s been a crazy, roller coaster year for me,” Bush continues. “I still reel from the success of [Running Up That Hill], being the No 1 track of this summer. What an honour!”

After being featured in the show, “Running Up That Hill” — the lead single from Bush’s 1985 album, Hounds of Love — rose to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and returned to the top 10 of the Alternative Airplay chart after a record 28-year absence. The song also felt success on a global level, topping charts in the U.K. and Australia.

“It was such a great feeling to see so many of the younger generation enjoying the song,” she writes. “It seems that quite a lot of them thought I was a new artist! I love that! Again, thank you so much to everyone who supported the track and made it a hit.”

Bush closes her message, which includes an image of a small robin, on a positive note by sharing some hopeful words from poet Emily Dickinson.

“I used a little robin in some of my Christmas gifts to friends this year. I felt that this humble little bird, which symbolises Christmas could also symbolise hope in the context of Emily Dickinson’s beautiful words: Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul,” Bush writes. “I‘d like to think that this Christmas when joy is so hard to find, hope will perch in all our souls. Merry Christmas!”

Jenna Bush Hager Caught Everyone’s Eye With Unforgettable Sexy Nighttime Outfit

“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.”

Jenna Bush Hager’s fashion game doesn’t go unnoticed on Today With Hoda and Jenna, but she’s now taking her impeccable style from daytime to nighttime TV.

In late November, she appeared on Andy Cohen‘s Watch What Happens Live with her co-host Hoda Kotb. As the three chatted about a variety of topics, fans couldn’t help but be mesmerized by Jenna’s wardrobe choice. Instead of the usually demure dresses folks see her in for Today‘s fourth hour, she chose to bring on the allure in a sexy black sleeveless body-con dress.

The dress not only mid-length, it also featured a halter-like neckline and subtle colorful stripes on the corset area. The Sisters First author accessorized the outfit with a pair of strapped heels, her frequently-seen gold necklaces and bracelets. Making sure to keep the focus on the frock, Jenna wore her blonde hair in classic beach waves and neutral makeup.

Jenna’s clearly not afraid to spice up her wardrobe these days, and it definitely seems to be working for her. She’s even been trying out new pieces while appearing on the NBC daytime talk show. In fact, she surprised audience members when she stepped out in a burgundy velvet suit as a subtle nod to 1970s fashion just a few weeks back.

Speaking with Good Housekeeping, she revealed that she puts together her ensembles. “I think clothes are fun,” she told us. “[Hoda and I] don’t have our own stylist, we do our own thing.”

Unfortunately, there isn’t information online about where she got her dress for the late night TV appearance. But luckily, we did some digging and found similar options that won’t break the bank. Take a look at them below while you wait to see what look Jenna pulls off next:

One Tree Hill actresses Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton say they were ‘threatened’ into Maxim shoot

One Tree Hill actresses Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton have claimed they were strong-armed into doing their 2006 Maxim shoot while on the show.

Their co-star Bethany Joy Lenz added that she was told she was not appearing in the magazine with her colleagues because she was ‘too fat.’

The women levelled the allegations against their old bosses on a new episode of their One Tree Hill re-watch podcast Drama Queens this Monday.

Five years ago, all three actresses joined a group of cast and crew who signed an open letter accusing One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn of sexual harassment.

Throwback: Sophia Bush (center) and Hilarie Burton (left)  have claimed they were strong-armed into doing their 2006 Maxim shoot with their co-star Danneel Harris Ackles (right)

The cover starred Bush and Burton alongside their co-star Danneel Harris Ackles, as cross-promotion connected to an episode of One Tree Hill where Burton’s character Brooke snaps Ackles’ character Rachel for a ‘Hometown Hotties’ Maxim cover.

Their new podcast episode asserted that in the run-up to the Maxim shoot, the minds behind the show were concerned with ramping up its male viewership.

Bush said that ‘we got told we had to do [Maxim], and I – because Brooke had been so sexualized on the show, and the whole idea of this like hometown hottie was Rachel’s storyline, I was like: “Look, if the girls wanna do it, that’s great. I don’t.”‘

She said she informed the brass: ‘”Like I have gone to battle trying to make Brooke less of this thing that you guys tried to force me into. I don’t wanna do it.”‘

Nowadays: Burton (left), Bush (right) and their old co-star Bethany Joy Lenz (center) made the allegations on their new podcast; they are all pictured together in September

Bush claimed that ‘I literally got told: “If you do not go and shoot this cover with your co-stars, we will guarantee you that you will never be let out for a press day, a movie, an event, any of your charities. We will keep you here forever.”‘

As Lenz wondered where Bush’s manager or lawyer was when negotiations were underway, Burton darkly brought up the ‘leverage’ their bosses had.

‘I remember getting pulled into the production office,’ said Burton: ‘and I sat on a floor while our boss was on the couch as we were given this like very friendly soft pitch that was: “Look, all the other shows have been on the cover of every single magazine and no one wants you guys. No one wants you.”‘

According to Burton, she was told: ‘”And you finally have someone that wants you and you’re really gonna turn your nose up at that?”‘

They way they were: Bush, Lenz and Burton are pictured together in a publicity shot for the show during its run, which lasted from 2003 to 2012

She noted that ‘we were on the bubble every year, and we were assured that Maxim had just been purchased by a new parent company and they had British ownership now – so they’re classing up the joint – and that it was run predominantly by women.’

Burton said of the girlie mag offer that ‘we had said no to that for years, for years! But it was very much a: “No one else wants you. The studio wants to cancel your show. If you don’t start to generate some buzz and attract these male numbers, then we’re dead and all your friends are gonna lose their jobs.”‘

‘And it’ll be your fault,’ Bush added, explaining that their employers would be able to punitively keep her on set even on days she was not scheduled to shoot by booking her in for other work-related commitments like wardrobe fittings.

‘It was such a profound threat,’ said Bush: ‘and a threat to like being able – honestly, even to have the ability to escape for a weekend a place that at this stage, like this season, I was leaving every chance I got.’

All together now: Lenz, Bush and Burton are all pictured at FYE in New York City at an event to sign autographs for One Tree Hill fans in 2005

Said she: ‘I would come into work and do my job and then I wanted out. I wanted to go home, I wanted to be with my family, I wanted to be with my friends. I did not want to be on our set. It was not a safe place for me.’

She confessed having ‘conflicting feelings’ about the cover at the time, complicated by how ‘beautiful’ and ‘stunning’ she thought Ackles and Burton looked on set ‘and this should be so fun but it’s miserable because we didn’t choose it.’

Burton, who previously alleged in Variety that Schwahn regarded her as ‘his muse’ and nonconsensually kissed her more than once, said on the new podcast episode that he showed up on the set of the Maxim shoot.

‘And he made a production out of giving me a present in front of Sophia and Danneel,’ said Burton. ‘It was an iPod that he had loaded with music he thought was applicable to me, and wanted Sophia to see it to put her in her place and he wanted Danneel to see it ’cause he was trying to make her jealous.’

Allegations: Five years ago all three actresses joined a group of cast and crew who signed an open letter accusing One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn (pictured 2015) of sexual harassment

Bush remembered seeing Burton ‘burning with discomfort’ and Burton shared how ’embarrassed’ she felt at the spectacle unfolding in front of her co-stars.

Lenz then claimed that she was told that Ackles had been selected to replace her on the Maxim shoot because of Lenz’ weight.

‘They told me that they didn’t come to me because I was too fat and I just wasn’t like, I wasn’t the hot girl, I wasn’t like a hot girl on the show anymore,’ she said.

Her co-stars were flabbergasted by Lenz’ bombshell, and Burton exclaimed: ‘Joy, they told us they asked you and you said no!’

Flashback: Burton, who is pictured in 2006, previously alleged in Variety that Schwahn regarded her as ‘his muse’ and nonconsensually kissed her more than once

With mounting fury, Bush added that ‘when I said: “I don’t wanna do it,” I was like: “But Joy’s not doing it! She said no! Why does she get to say no?” And they go: “Well, she said no so you have to say yes, and she said no first.”‘

Bush asserted further that she was told Maxim wanted a minimum of three of the show’s actresses to appear on their cover.

‘So isn’t it crazy though to realize that they scapegoated you to tell the three of us we couldn’t say no?’ she said to Lenz. ‘They threw you under the f***ing bus. I was like: “Why does she get to say no and I don’t? I don’t understand!”‘

In a lighter moment, Burton recalled: ‘Guess who wore pants in Maxim? This guy! ‘Cause I have kept this pair of white jeans for so long, ‘cause I showed up that day and was such a righteous b**** and like such like a brat, like such a baby. And I was like: “I’m wearing pants!” I’m just: “I’m uncomfortable, put me in the pants!”‘

Quintet: Lenz, Burton and Bush are pictured between their One Tree Hill co-stars James Lafferty (left) and Chad Michael Murray (right) in New York in 2004

She dished: ‘And so I’ve saved those white jeans as like a testament to: “I’m gonna wear pants in Maxim and still be cute!”‘

‘I mean, we tried our hardest,’ said Bush. ‘We got like cute vintage one-pieces and high-waisted bikinis and I was like: “Yeah, I’ll wear this like corset top that totally covers my tummy and then these shorts, and it’ll look like a 50s pinup shoot!”‘

She said with a laugh that ‘they did the thing that they loved to do to us then where they tried to make our boobs bigger’ and joked that ‘it’s like someone started making one of my boobs bigger and then went to lunch and forgot they weren’t done.’

Bush remembered: ‘So literally I have like one normal size boob and one huge boob and half a butt on one side!’

We need direct talks with Russia and a negotiated settlement | Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, Barbara Lee, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and others

Dear Mr President,

We write with appreciation for your commitment to Ukraine’s legitimate struggle against Russia’s war of aggression. Your support for the self-defense of an independent, sovereign and democratic state has been supported by Congress, including through various appropriations of military, economic and humanitarian aid in furtherance of this cause. Your administration’s policy was critical to enable the Ukrainian people, through their courageous fighting and heroic sacrifices, to deal a historic military defeat to Russia, forcing Russia to dramatically scale back the stated goals of the invasion.

Crucially, you achieved this while also maintaining that it is imperative to avoid direct military conflict with Russia, which would lead to “world war III, something we must strive to prevent”. The risk of nuclear weapons being used has been estimated to be higher now than at any time since the height of the cold war. Given the catastrophic possibilities of nuclear escalation and miscalculation, which only increase the longer this war continues, we agree with your goal of avoiding direct military conflict as an overriding national security priority.

Given the destruction created by this war for Ukraine and the world, as well as the risk of catastrophic escalation, we also believe it is in the interest of Ukraine, the United States and the world to avoid a prolonged conflict. For this reason, we urge you to pair the military and economic support the United States has provided to Ukraine with a proactive diplomatic push, redoubling efforts to seek a realistic framework for a ceasefire. This is consistent with your recognition that “there’s going to have to be a negotiated settlement here,” and your concern that Vladimir Putin “doesn’t have a way out right now, and I’m trying to figure out what we do about that”.

We are under no illusions regarding the difficulties involved in engaging Russia, given its outrageous and illegal invasion of Ukraine and its decision to make additional illegal annexations of Ukrainian territory. However, if there is a way to end the war while preserving a free and independent Ukraine, it is America’s responsibility to pursue every diplomatic avenue to support such a solution that is acceptable to the people of Ukraine. Such a framework would presumably include incentives to end hostilities, including some form of sanctions relief and bring together the international community to establish security guarantees for a free and independent Ukraine that are acceptable for all parties, particularly Ukrainians. The alternative to diplomacy is protracted war, with both its attendant certainties and catastrophic and unknowable risks.

Russia’s invasion has caused incalculable harm for the people of Ukraine, leading to the deaths of countless thousands of civilians, Ukrainian soldiers, and displacement of 13 million people, while Russia’s recent seizure of cities in Ukraine’s east have led to the most pivotal moment in the conflict and the consolidation of Russian control over roughly 20% of Ukraine’s territory. The conflict threatens an additional tens of millions more worldwide, as skyrocketing prices in wheat, fertilizer and fuel spark acute crises in global hunger and poverty. A war that is allowed to grind on for years – potentially escalating in intensity and geographic scope – threatens to displace, kill, and immiserate far more Ukrainians while causing hunger, poverty, and death around the world. The conflict has also contributed to elevated gas and food prices at home, fueling inflation and high oil prices for Americans in recent months. Economists believe that if the situation in Ukraine is stabilized, some of the speculative concerns driving higher fuel costs will subside and likely lead to a drop in world oil prices.

We agree with the administration’s perspective that it is not America’s place to pressure Ukraine’s government regarding sovereign decisions, and with the principle you have enunciated that there should be “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine”. But as legislators responsible for the expenditure of tens of billions of US taxpayer dollars in military assistance in the conflict, we believe such involvement in this war also creates a responsibility for the United States to seriously explore all possible avenues, including direct engagement with Russia, to reduce harm and support Ukraine in achieving a peaceful settlement.

In May, President Zelenskiy, despite deadlocked negotiations, reiterated that the war “will only definitively end through diplomacy”, and had previously explained that “any mentally healthy person always chooses the diplomatic path, because he or she knows: even if it is difficult, it can prevent the loss of thousands, tens of thousands …and maybe even millions of lives.”

In conclusion, we urge you to make vigorous diplomatic efforts in support of a negotiated settlement and ceasefire, engage in direct talks with Russia, explore prospects for a new European security arrangement acceptable to all parties, which will allow for a sovereign and independent Ukraine, and, in coordination with our Ukrainian partners, seek a rapid end to the conflict and reiterate this goal as America’s chief priority.
