‘Green’ Mediterranean diet burns fat even faster: study

Following the “green” Mediterranean diet helps burn fat three times faster than typical healthy eating, a new study shows.

Research published in the BMC Medicine journal found that eating a plant-based Mediterranean diet allowed the body to burn a dangerous type of body fat at triple the rate compared to those on a generally “healthy” diet.

Those who consumed the diet for 18 months saw their visceral fat levels reduced by 14%, compared to a control group who ate a standard healthy diet and only saw their fat levels reduced by just 4.5%. And a conventional Med diet performed half as well as its meat-free counterpart.

Visceral fat is the kind that wraps around vital organs in the abdomen, and is more likely than other fats to raise your risk for serious medical issues, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s and type 2 diabetes. This type of fat is what typically gives someone a beer belly, but is found in thin people as well.

Research suggests that losing visceral fat should be the objective in weight loss, and more indicative of health than a personal’s overall weight or the circumference of their waist.

The Mediterranean and green Mediterranean diets were found to support weight loss and waist circumferences but the green Mediterranean diet doubled the visceral fat loss.

A Mediterranean diet — which is high in fats and proteins but low in carbohydrates — is touted as an overall healthy diet and become increasingly popular for its heart health benefits.

Plant-based foods, such as whole grains, vegetables and legumes are the foundation of the diet with olive oil being the main source of added fat, but the green Mediterranean diet puts an extra emphasis on the greens.

The 18-month study, conducted by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, enlisted 294 participants who averaged to be 51 years old and considered clinically obese. Researchers separated the participants into three groups at random, guiding them through a “healthy” diet, a Mediterranean diet or a green Mediterranean diet.

People on the green Mediterranean diet were instructed to forgo red meat and poultry and drink daily three to four cups of green tea, and a duckweed (Wolffia globosa) shake — which is high in protein, iron, B12, vitamins, minerals and polyphenols — to substitute meat intake.

Both groups following the Mediterranean diets had calorie restrictions of 1,400 calories a day for women, and 1,800 a day for men, and ate fewer than 40 grams of carbohydrates a day for the first two months, before being raised to 80 grams.

Those on a general “healthy” diet were not given strict calorie counts.

All participants were given 90-minute nutrition lessons every week for the first month and then once a month for the following five and asked to do aerobic and resistance training three to four times a week for 45 to 60 minutes.

In the end, the study found that while the Mediterranean and green Mediterranean diets lead to participants seeing similar weight loss and waist circumferences, the green Mediterranean diet doubled the visceral fat loss. And the visceral fat loss was tripled compared to the “healthy” diet.

It also concluded that higher dietary consumption of green tea, walnuts and duckweed, paired with with lowered red meat intake, were significantly related to greater visceral fat loss.

Jay Leno released from hospital after suffering serious burns in car fire | Jay Leno

Jay Leno has been released from hospital and is “looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with his family” after being treated for serious burns sustained in a recent petrol fire accident.

The former host of The Tonight Show was said to be thankful for the care he had received following the incident and “very appreciative of all the well wishes”.

The incident reportedly took place while Leno was working underneath a car in Burbank, California, last week.

The comedian suffered “deep second-degree” and possibly third-degree burns. But Dr Peter Grossman said he was “pleased with Jay’s progress” and “optimistic” that Leno would make a full recovery.

“Jay would like to let everyone know how thankful he is for the care he received, and is very appreciative of all of the well wishes,” read a statement from the Grossman Burn Centre, shared with US media.

“He is looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with his family and friends and wishes everyone a wonderful holiday.”

The centre also shared a picture of Leno with several hospital staff, which showed visible burn scars on his face, neck and hand.

He previously said he was “okay” but in recovery after the incident.

“I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire,” he said in a statement shared with the PA news agency.

“I am okay. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”

The US presenter and comedian took over NBC’s Tonight Show when longtime host Johnny Carson retired in 1992, and returned for another stint from 2010 to 2014, before handing over the reins to current host Jimmy Fallon.

Leno, 72, turned his love of cars into a CNBC series, Jay Leno’s Garage, and now hosts a revival of the game show You Bet Your Life.

Jay Leno has undergone surgery for ‘significant’ burns, physician says

CNN
 —

Jay Leno has undergone one surgery for his burn injuries and will undergo a second procedure later this week, according to his physician.

Leno, an avid car collector, had been working underneath a vehicle on Saturday when he was burned by a gasoline fire, Dr. Peter Grossman, who is treating the former “Tonight Show Host,” said during a press conference Wednesday.

“When got pulled out from the area underneath the car, it was noted that he had pretty significant burns to face and hands,” he said.

“His burns include his face, his hands, and his chest, the burns are fairly significant,” Grossman noted.

Leno was first taken to a local hospital and then was transferred to the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles after the incident.

Leno’s wife has been by his side and “obviously very concerned,” the doctor said. His injuries are a mixture of second-degree and possibly some third-degree burns, according to Grossman.

“Some of the burns to the face are a little deeper and a little more concerning. Right now they’re in that progression of somewhere between deep second and third-degree burns to the face. We’re hoping we can keep them from progressing by using these alternate treatments, including good wound care and hyperbaric oxygen and aggressive surgical management,” he explained.

“He’s Jay leno, he’s walking around, he’s cracking jokes,” he said, noting the comedian is “incredibly kind” to the hospital staff.

“His injuries are serious, his condition is good,” he said. “I do anticipate him making a full recovery.”

Jay Leno Sends Message After Suffering Burns to Face in Gasoline Fire – NBC Los Angeles

Jay Leno was hospitalized and canceled a conference appearance after suffering a serious medical injury, a burn to his face and hands, after one of his cars caught fire without warning.

Leno, the car fanatic and longtime Tonight Show host, was being treated at the Grossman Burn Center in West Hills.

The 72-year-old was set to perform at Forum 2022 at the Aria in Las Vegas Sunday night.

NBCLA spoke with George Swift, a mechanic at Big Dog Productions and good friend of Leno’s, who said it’s going to be a long recovery, but Leno will be OK.

A representative, who was not present at the time of the fire, said Leno was working in his LA garage Saturday when a flash fire erupted from one of the cars and Leno was injured.

He canceled his engagements for the rest of the week.

The hospital released a statement on Leno’s behalf Monday afternoon letting everyone know he was doing well.

“Jay wants everyone to know that he is in stable condition and receiving treatment at the Grossman Burn Center for burns that he received to his face and hands from a gasoline accident in his garage over the weekend. He is in good humor and is touched by all the inquiries into his condition and well wishes.  He wants to let everyone know he is doing well and is in ‘the best burn center in the United States,'” the statement read.

CIA Director Bill Burns meeting with Russian counterpart Monday

CNN
 —

CIA Director Bill Burns is meeting with his Russian intelligence counterpart, Sergey Naryshkin, in Ankara Monday as part of an ongoing effort by the US to “communicate with Russia on managing risk” and to discuss the cases of “unjustly detained US citizens,” a National Security Council spokesperson tells CNN.

“We have been very open about the fact that we have channels to communicate with Russia on managing risk, especially nuclear risk and risks to strategic stability,” the spokesperson said. “As part of this effort, Bill Burns is in Ankara today to meet with his Russian intelligence counterpart.”

CNN has previously reported that national security adviser Jake Sullivan has also been in touch with his Russian counterparts to warn them of the consequences should Russia use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine.

The spokesperson emphasized that Burns “is not conducting negotiations of any kind.”

“He is not discussing settlement of the war in Ukraine. He is conveying a message on the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons by Russia, and the risks of escalation to strategic stability. He will also raise the cases of unjustly detained US citizens.”

The spokesperson added that the US briefed Ukraine on the meeting in advance of Burns’ trip.

“We firmly stick to our fundamental principle: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” the spokesperson said.

The Biden administration has dispatched Burns several times over the last year for talks with the Russians, using the veteran diplomat and former US ambassador to Russia as a key intermediary as US-Russia relations have continued to decline. Burns was sent to Moscow last November, before Russia invaded Ukraine, to warn the Kremlin of the consequences of an invasion. He has also been involved in discussions with Naryshkin about US citizens detained in Russia, including Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan.

The discussions are also part of an ongoing effort by the US to keep the lines of communication open with Moscow amid thinly veiled threats by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russia could use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine.

“In the event of a threat to the territorial integrity of our country and to defend Russia and our people, we will certainly make use of all weapon systems available to us. This is not a bluff,” Putin warned in a speech in September.

He later appeared to reverse himself, saying in October that “we see no need for” nuclear weapons in Ukraine. “There is no point in that, neither political, nor military.”

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu also spoke by phone late last month for the first time since May, as intelligence surfaced that Russian military officials had discussed how and under what conditions Russia would use a tactical nuclear weapon on the battlefield in Ukraine, CNN has previously reported.

Russian officials also last month began alleging that Ukraine is preparing to use a “dirty bomb”– an allegation the US worried was simply a pretext for Russia to use one itself, and that the International Atomic Energy Agency debunked after an investigation of Ukrainian sites.

The US has still not seen any signs that Putin has decided to take the drastic step of using a nuclear weapon, officials said.

How Physical Exercise Burns Muscle Fat

Summary: Researchers identify a neuromuscular circuit that links the burning of muscle fat during physical exercise to the action of a protein in the brain.

Source: FAPESP

An article published in Science Advances describes a neuromuscular circuit that links the burning of muscle fat to the action of a protein in the brain.

The findings, obtained in Brazil by researchers at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the University of São Paulo (USP), contribute to a deeper understanding of how regular physical exercise helps weight loss, reinforcing the importance of this habit to good health.

“We set out to study the action of a protein called interleukin 6 [IL-6], which is a pro-inflammatory cytokine but performs different functions in some situations including exercise. In this case, the function is burning muscle fat,” said Eduardo Ropelle, last author of the article. Ropelle is a professor at UNICAMP’s School of Applied Sciences (FCA) in Limeira and is supported by FAPESP.

The group led by Ropelle had already observed in mice that muscle fat oxidation began immediately in the legs when the protein was injected directly into the brain.

This part of the study was conducted during the master’s research of Thayana Micheletti. She performed part of the analysis during a research internship at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

The researchers analyzed the results to find out whether there was a neural circuit linking production of IL-6 in the hypothalamus, a brain region that controls several functions, to the breakdown of skeletal muscle fat.

This part of the study was conducted with the collaboration of Carlos Katashima, who is currently on a postdoctoral internship at FCA-UNICAMP’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Exercise (LaBMEx), headed by Ropelle.

Previous studies showed that a specific part of the hypothalamus (the ventromedial nucleus) could alter muscle metabolism when stimulated. On detecting the presence of IL-6 receptors in this brain region, Brazilian researchers formulated the hypothesis that the protein produced there might activate a neuromuscular circuit that favored the burning of skeletal muscle fat.

Several experiments were performed to demonstrate the circuit’s existence. In one, Katashima and colleagues excised part of the sciatic nerve in one of the legs of each mouse. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower spine to the feet.

When IL-6 was injected into the brain, fat was burned as expected in the intact legs but not in the leg with the severed nerve.

“The experiment showed that muscle fat is metabolized only thanks to the nervous connection between hypothalamus and muscle,” Katashima said.

Blocked receptors

To find out how the nervous system was linked to the muscles, the researchers administered drugs that blocked the mice’s alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors, in this case responsible for receiving nervous signals for muscles to perform the function determined by the brain.

Blocking beta-adrenergic receptors had little effect, but muscle fat oxidation stopped or was sharply reduced when alpha-adrenergic receptors were blocked.

Computer simulations (in silico analysis) showed hypothalamic IL-6 gene expression to be strongly correlated with two muscle alpha-adrenergic receptor subunits (adrenoreceptors alpha2A and alpha2C).

When IL-6 was injected into the brains of mice genetically engineered not to produce these receptors, the results were validated: leg muscle fat was not metabolized in these mice.

“An important finding of the study was the association between this neuromuscular circuit and afterburn, which is fat oxidation that occurs after exercise has ceased. This has been considered secondary, but in fact, it can last for hours and should be considered vitally important to the process of weight loss,” Ropelle said.

“We showed that physical exercise not only produces IL-6 in skeletal muscle, which was already known but also increases the amount of IL-6 in the hypothalamus,” Katashima noted.

“It’s likely therefore that the effects last far longer than the duration of the exercise itself, underlining the importance of exercise to any intervention against obesity.”

“Evidence for a neuromuscular circuit involving hypothalamic interleukin-6 in the control of skeletal muscle metabolism” by Carlos Kiyoshi Katashima et al. Science Advances

Abstract

Evidence for a neuromuscular circuit involving hypothalamic interleukin-6 in the control of skeletal muscle metabolism

Hypothalamic interleukin-6 (IL6) exerts a broad metabolic control.

Here, we demonstrated that IL6 activates the ERK1/2 pathway in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), stimulating AMPK/ACC signaling and fatty acid oxidation in mouse skeletal muscle.

Bioinformatics analysis revealed that the hypothalamic IL6/ERK1/2 axis is closely associated with fatty acid oxidation– and mitochondrial-related genes in the skeletal muscle of isogenic BXD mouse strains and humans.

We showed that the hypothalamic IL6/ERK1/2 pathway requires the α2-adrenergic pathway to modify fatty acid skeletal muscle metabolism.

To address the physiological relevance of these findings, we demonstrated that this neuromuscular circuit is required to underpin AMPK/ACC signaling activation and fatty acid oxidation after exercise.

Last, the selective down-regulation of IL6 receptor in VMH abolished the effects of exercise to sustain AMPK and ACC phosphorylation and fatty acid oxidation in the muscle after exercise.

Together, these data demonstrated that the IL6/ERK axis in VMH controls fatty acid metabolism in the skeletal muscle.

NVIDIA’s 16-Pin Connector on GeForce RTX 4090 Graphics Card Burns Up, Melts The Cable & The Plug

The first case of an NVIDIA 16-pin connector, powering the GeForce RTX 4090, burning up and melting the plug has been reported over at Reddit.

NVIDIA 16-Pin Connector Burns Up! Melts The Power Connector On GeForce RTX 4090 Graphics Card

Update: Another graphics card, this time the ASUS GeForce RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC, has been affected by the same issue. As tweeted by @Vectral555, we can see that the 16-Pin connector and the power plug on the PCB, both have burned up. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has reached out to the OP & we’ll keep you updated on how things work out.

Redditor, u/reggie_gakil, posted on the NVIDIA subreddit a picture of the NVIDIA 16-pin connector all burned up. The connector was powering his brand-new GeForce RTX 4090 (custom model). The pictures show that both the power adapter which includes a 16-pin to 4 x 8-pin plug and the power connector on the PCB ended up in flames and melted. The graphics card was the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OC.

Looking closely at the pictures, it seems like the issue occurred around the main 12-pins under the four additional pins on the top. But looking at the adapter, almost the entirety of it has burned up and melted. The cable is supplied and confirms the official NVIDIA specifications and we already stated that bending or putting too much stress on the cable can lead to abnormal temps that can end up causing issues such as these.

The user reports that he was playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 PC when the card went up in flames and burned the power connector. He also states that it could be a faulty cable and will RMA it though we won’t be able to get to the bottom of this issue until we get more information.

PCI-SIG Internal Investigation of The Issue (Image Credits: GamersNexus):

It was recently spotted that the NVIDIA 16-pin adapter cable for the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards is just too thick and not easy to manage in smaller PC cases as it hits the side panel really often. So users will have to bend the cable a lot to close the panel but once again, this bending is not recommended as it could heat up the cables and cause the adapter to burst up in flames.

More on that here. Custom cable manufacturers and modding companies are trying to overcome this issue by offering 90-degree angled connectors which should go up on sale in a few weeks.

But this is just one report and the issue doesn’t seem to be too widespread otherwise we would have been hearing multiple reports. But users only had two weeks at max with the cards & most people are still waiting to get their shipments. So if the adapter or the plug on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards is really faulty, we will know for sure in the coming months.

What exercise burns the most calories? It’s right at your feet.

Whether you’re trying to lose weight, maintain an organized exercise schedule or are simply curious, knowing how to burn the most calories can be important for picking an activity.

It’s essential to remember your body needs calories for day-to-day functions. In fact, humans burn calories with every movement and activity.

The recommended caloric intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men, but this depends on several factors. Age, lifestyle, height and weight can affect the energy you need, and hormones and medication can affect how much energy you burn.

Trying to lose weight?: How to lose belly fat naturally

Shifting the narrative: Is our view of weight loss starting to change?

Exercise that burns the most calories

According to Healthline, running burns the most calories. A tried and true exercise that requires little more than your legs and the open road, running burns just over 800 calories for a 155-pound adult per hour. While it depends on intensity and length of the workout as well as your weight, Healthline estimates a 125-pound adult would burn 652 calories in an hour and a 185-pound adult would burn about 965 calories.

Another running-esque workout that burns a lot of calories in a short amount of time is high-knee running, Healthline reports. You can perform this exercise by jogging in place while bringing your knees up toward your chest as high as you can.

You can also try jumping rope to engage your endurance in a different way. Jumping rope burns around 667-990 calories per hour, according to Women’s Health Magazine. This childhood game can make a comeback into your workout routine and strengthen your calves, ankles, core strength and endurance.

How many calories does swimming burn?

Swimming is a leisure activity many enjoy, but it can also be turned into a primary form of exercise. According to Healthline, an hour-long pool session will burn about 400 calories or as much as 700 calories for a 150-pound adult. The freestyle stroke will burn the most calories because it’s the fastest, Healthline says.

How are calories burned?

Calories are used to give your body the energy it needs to function. The body combines the calories in food and beverages with oxygen to release this energy and the number of calories it uses is known as your metabolic rate. Metabolism is a natural process that can be affected by age, sex and body type.

Physical exercise, like any movement, burns calories. This means walking or even doing household work can burn calories, according to Mayo Clinic.

The science behind losing or maintaining weight is not as simple as burning the calories you intake. In fact, a study published in August 2021 found that metabolism is not constant throughout a human’s life and changes from newborn age to older adulthood. It also dispelled the myth that men have faster metabolisms than women. They actually burn more calories per day because of more muscle in the body.

Just curious?: We’re here to help you answer life’s everyday questions

How many calories do you burn sleeping?

While it depends on factors like weight and age, humans burn about 50 calories per hour of sleep. According to the Sleep Foundation, your body burns the most calories during rapid eye movement sleep when your heart rate increases.

Northern California wildfire burns homes, causes injuries

WEED, Calif. >> A fast-moving wildfire in rural Northern California injured several people Friday, destroyed multiple homes and forced thousands of residents to flee, jamming roadways at the start of a sweltering Labor Day weekend.

The blaze dubbed the Mill Fire started on or near the property of Roseburg Forest Products, a plant that manufactures wood veneers. It quickly burned through homes, pushed by 35-mph (56-kph) winds, and by evening had engulfed 4 square miles (10.3 square kilometers) of ground.

Annie Peterson said she was sitting on the porch of her home near the Roseburg facility when “all of a sudden we heard a big boom and all that smoke was just rolling over toward us.”

Very quickly her home and about a dozen others were on fire. She said members of her church helped evacuate her and her son, who is immobile. She said the scene of smoke and flames looked like “the world was coming to an end.”

Many places in the area were also without power. About 9,000 customers, many of them in Weed, were hit with electrical outages shortly before 1 p.m., according to electric power company PacifiCorp, which said they were due to the wildfire.

Suzi Brady, a Cal Fire spokeswoman, said several people were injured.

Allison Hendrickson, spokeswoman for Dignity Health North State hospitals, said two people were brought to Mercy Medical Center Mount Shasta. One was in stable condition and the other was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center, which has a burn unit.

Meanwhile, a second fire that erupted a few miles north of the Mill Fire near the community of Gazelle had burned 600 acres (243 hectares) acres and prompted some evacuations.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Siskyou County and said a federal grant had been received “to help ensure the availability of vital resources to suppress the fire.”

California is in the grip of a prolonged drought and now a brutal heat wave that is taxing the power grid as people try to stay cool. Residents have been asked for three consecutive days to conserve power during late afternoon and evening hours when energy consumption is highest.

Scientists say climate change has made the West warmer and drier over the last three decades and will continue to make weather more extreme and wildfires more frequent and destructive. In the last five years, California has experienced the largest and most destructive fires in state history.

Southern California saw two large fires break out earlier in the week. The last evacuation orders for those were being lifted around the time the Mill Fire started midday Friday. Flames spread fast and about 7,500 people were under evacuation orders that covered the small city of Weed and surrounding areas, which are about 250 miles (402 kilometers) north of San Francisco.

Dr. Deborah Higer, medical director at the Shasta View Nursing Center, said all 23 patients at the facility were evacuated, with 20 going to local hospitals and three staying at her own home, where hospital beds were set up.

Olga Hood heard about the fire on her scanner and stepped onto to the front porch of her Weed home to see smoke blowing over the next hill.

With the notorious gusts that tear through the town at the base of Mount Shasta, she didn’t wait for an evacuation order. She packed up her documents, medication and little else, said her granddaughter, Cynthia Jones.

“With the wind in Weed everything like that moves quickly. It’s bad,” Jones said by phone from her home in Medford, Oregon. “It’s not uncommon to have 50 to 60 mph gusts on a normal day. I got blown into a creek as a kid.”

Hood’s home of nearly three decades was spared from a blaze last year and from the devastating Boles Fire that tore through town eight years ago, destroying more than 160 buildings, mostly homes.

Hood wept as she discussed the fire from a relative’s house in the hamlet of Granada, Jones said. She wasn’t able to gather photos that had been important to her late husband.

Willo Balfrey, 82, an artist from Lake Shastina, said she was painting Friday afternoon when her grandson, who is a member of the California Highway Patrol, called to warn her of the fast-spreading flames.

“He said, ‘don’t linger, grab your computer, grab what you need and get out of the house now. It’s coming your way.’ So I did,” Balfrey said.

She grabbed a suitcase full of important documents, as well as water and her computer, iPhone and chargers, and headed out the door.

“I’ve reached the philosophy that if I have all my paperwork, what’s in the house is not that important,” she said.

She stopped to get her neighbor and they drove to a church parking lot in Montague, where about 40 other vehicles were also parked.

Rebecca Taylor, communications director for Roseburg Forest Products based in Springfield, Oregon, said it is unclear if the fire started near or on company property. A large empty building at the edge of company property burned she said. All employees were evacuated, and none have reported injuries, she said.

The plant employs 145 people, although not all were on shift at the time, Taylor said.

“We’re just devastated to see this fire affecting the community in this way,” she said.

In Southern California, firefighters were making progress Friday against two big wildfires.

Containment of the Route Fire along Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles increased to 56% and it remained at just over 8 square miles (21 square kilometers) , a Cal Fire statement said. On Wednesday, seven firefighters working in triple-digit temperatures had to be taken to hospitals for treatment of heat illnesses. All were released.

In eastern San Diego County, the Border 32 Fire remained at just under 7 square miles (18 square kilometers) and containment increased to 65%. More than 1,500 people had to evacuate the area near the U.S.-Mexico border when the fire erupted Wednesday. All evacuations were lifted by Friday afternoon.

Two people were hospitalized with burns. Three homes and seven other buildings were destroyed.
