NYPD tells asylum seekers camped out in Midtown to leave as lawmakers head to Brooklyn to tour new shelter

NEW YORK — Controversy continues to brew over the city’s decision to move asylum seekers from the Watson Hotel in Midtown to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

On Wednesday, City Council members visited the new facility.

But what do the men who have moved there think?

The lawmakers joined in on the chorus of calls, criticizing the living conditions inside the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal — the new home to 1,000 asylum seekers.

“The city of New York is trying to discourage people from staying in their care and that’s why they have set up this kind of congregate facility in the way that they have,” Councilman Lincoln Restler said.

For days, the city has struggled to convince those staying at the hotel in Midtown to move to Red Hook so that hotel rooms can be given to families.

Many have refused, choosing to camp out in the cold in front of the Watson while arguing the new shelter is isolated, lacking in transportation, with cots stacked head to toe.

CBS2’s Ali Bauman witnessed NYPD officers outside the Watson Hotel on Wednesday night telling those who were still staying on the sidewalk to pack up and leave.

Asylum seekers CBS2 spoke to in Brooklyn on Wednesday said they adjusted just fine.

“A single man can go anywhere, sleep anywhere, eat whatever, but with a kids, it’s a different matter,” said Oscar Marin of Colombia.

The city has been fighting the negative reaction by posting videos and pictures of the facility, reiterating there’s nearly 100 toilets, controlled temperature, hot showers, and three meals per day.

Mayor Eric Adams is accusing some bad actors of spreading misinformation.

“The overwhelming number of them move. From my analysis about 30 are still there, and I’m not even sure they are migrants. There are some agitators that just really … I think is doing a disservice to the migrants,” Adams said.

But advocates say it’s no surprise why people would be upset.

“Nobody wants to be sleeping with 999 people in the same room. I think it’s a very difficult position to be put into, especially for clients who have undergone a lot of trauma,” said Kathryn Kliff, attorney at the Legal Aid Society.

Activists and council members say there’s no reason the city can’t open up more hotels for the asylum seekers, adding the move to Brooklyn is adding to their trauma.

Investment banker suspended from job after alleged drunken attack on MTA worker

The alleged drunken banker charged with slugging an MTA worker at a Brooklyn subway station has been suspended by his Manhattan investment firm, the company said Sunday.

Jean-Francois Coste, 53, was benched by Tocqueville Asset Management, the Midtown investment firm where he has worked for nearly 15 years, after Friday’s early-morning assault on MTA worker Tanya McCray at a Coney Island subway station, the company said.

“Mr. Coste has been suspended from the firm effective immediately,” the company said in a statement. “Tocqueville Asset Management is completely intolerant of violent behavior and, pending further investigation, will take whatever action is necessary.”

A spokesman for Tocqueville would not say if Coste was suspended with or without pay.

A reportedly inebriated Coste was at the Stillwell Avenue station around 12:15 a.m. when he allegedly punched McCray as she came on the job, according to police.

Police said investment banker Jean-Francois Coste was drunk when he allegedly slugged an MTA worker at a Coney Island station.

Cops said McCray had confronted Coste when the suspected drunken banker tried to get into an employees-only area at the station, with the finance worker slugging her twice in the face when she refused to let him in.

The MTA veteran also fought back against her attacker with her lunch bag, which had a thermos inside, leaving Coste with scratches and a black eye, police said.

Coste took off after the assault but was cornered by transit workers and busted by police, authorities said.

He was charged with assault, harassment and menacing and released without bail.

The Legal Aid Society, which represented Coste at his arraignment Friday, said he has since retained a private lawyer.

The suspect was holed up in his Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, brownstone Sunday.

A spokesman for Local 100 of the Transit Worker’s Union said McCray had just left the “crew room” at the station when she spotted Coste trying to get into a restricted area.

“It’s not a public area,” the spokesman said. “He was apparently drunk. She pushed the door so it clicks and locks, and he punched her in the face at least twice.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Coste has been with Tocqueville since February 2008, and was currently working at the firm as a senior equity analyst.

He graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 1993 and previously earned an MBA in finance at the NEOMA Business School in France.

Coste’s profile has been purged from the Tocqueville company website since the attack, and he has made his Instagram and Facebook accounts private.

He is due back in Brooklyn court March 1.

Friday’s attack occurred two days before a female MTA worker was randomly socked in the face by a nut in a Times Square subway station and her male colleague was viciously kicked in the leg as he took the guy down, cops said.

“We have zero tolerance for attacks on transit workers, and two senseless assaults days apart on employees just trying to do their jobs for the public is outrageous,” said NYC Transit Chief Operating Officer Craig Cipriano in a statement.

“We are grateful that the NYPD made immediate arrests in both cases, at Coney Island and Times Square, and hope the injured workers have a speedy recovery.”

Fire in Brooklyn Today Destroys NYPD Evidence Warehouse in Red Hook – NBC New York

An untold amount of “biological evidence” linked to New York City crimes dating back decades was destroyed or damaged in a raging inferno that devoured an NYPD warehouse off the Brooklyn waterfront Tuesday, authorities say.

The fire, which broke out around 10:40 a.m. at the Erie Basin Auto Pound in Red Hook, a sprawling warehouse on Columbia Street, left a half-dozen first responders and two civilians hurt — and sent up towering black smoke plumes so thick some confused New Yorkers thought the blaze had started in Manhattan.

It escalated to three alarms within about 30 minutes, and roughly 150 fire department members were at the scene through early afternoon.

It wasn’t immediately clear what sparked the blaze, and the investigation could take some time. Firefighters were forced to withdraw from the interior early because of the intense flames and combustible material, as well as the threat of collapse. One section of the warehouse, which may have had hundreds of e-bikes in it, did fall, officials said.

A total of eight people — three firefighters, three EMS members and two civilians — were hurt in the fire, but all are expected to be OK, FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens said.

There was no estimated cost of the damage early. It wasn’t clear how many vehicles were in the lot at the time the fire broke out, but there appeared to be dozens of cars, trucks and motorcycles, along with ATVs, parked on the pier area.

NYPD officials said the vehicles included some historic ones as well as e-bikes, though a full inventory needed to be conducted to determine what was in the warehouse at the time of the fire. Biological evidence from past crimes, including burglaries and shootings — some of it going back 20 or 30 years — was kept at the location, the NYPD said.

Sandy property evidence was there as well. Rape kits, however, were not stored at that facility. Police plan to do a full accounting of the contents to determine if anything can be salvaged, and the extent of the overall damage, but the deep-seated volume of the fire, the building structure and limited access are problematic, officials say.

Chopper 4 was over the multi-alarm fire.

The FDNY appeared to be using boats as part of its firefighting effort during the worst of the fire — and top fire department officials say drones will be used in the coming days to identify any hard-to-see hotspots.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management advised people in the area close their windows to limit smoke exposure. Traffic delays mounted in the area through the morning.

Chopper 4 was over the scene through some of the most ferocious fire, hovering over a row of dirt bikes at one point as a nearby pickup truck burst into fire. The lot appears to be the same one where NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell and Mayor Eric Adams crushed illegal dirt bikes as part of a crackdown this summer.

Erie Basin is one of several lots the NYPD uses to store vehicles that have been seized for reasons other than parking violations. Those might include the arrest of the vehicle owner, investigative purposes or legal reasons, the city says.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) New York branch responded to assist.
