Nvidia unveils a broad range of efficient new laptop GPUs, from RTX 4050 to 4090

Enlarge / Nvidia says that an unnamed RTX 4000-series GPU can perform like an RTX 3070 while consuming power like an RTX 3050.

Nvidia

In addition to un-unlaunching the RTX 4070 Ti GPU for desktops at CES today, Nvidia announced a new range of RTX 4000-series laptop GPUs. Nvidia claims the new GPUs will provide big performance and power efficiency boosts, particularly for the lower-end GPUs that ship in the gaming laptops that most people buy.

The RTX 4000-series laptop GPUs use the same Ada Lovelace architecture as the desktop parts and will come with the same architectural benefits: DLSS 3 support, hardware-accelerated AV1 video encoding, and a more efficient manufacturing process that Nvidia is leaning on to improve power efficiency. (Nvidia didn’t specify in its presentation, but presumably it’s the same customized 5nm TSMC process used for the desktop Lovelace cards).

We don’t have precise specs for any of the GPUs, and most of Nvidia’s performance comparisons were pretty abstract. We know there will be 4050-, 4060-, 4070-, 4080-, and (for the first time in laptops) 4090-class GPUs. We also assume that manufacturers can set specific power targets for each GPU, providing better performance in designs that can handle it while tuning for power efficiency in thinner and lighter laptops. We know that each GPU will continue to use “ultra-low voltage” GDDR6 memory rather than GDDR6X, the same as the previous-generation RTX 3000-series laptop GPUs.

We also know that an unnamed Lovelace GPU (presumably the 4090) can beat an unnamed Ampere GPU (presumably the RTX 3080 Ti) in all games by various amounts. These abstract performance comparisons are made more difficult because Nvidia-provided performance charts normally also turn on DLSS and other features, making it more difficult to determine how the GPUs stack up relative to each other in games and apps that don’t support those features.

Enlarge / This series of dots compares an unnamed Lovelace laptop GPU to an unnamed Ampere GPU.

Nvidia

But the most concrete chart compared an unnamed Lovelace GPU to the RTX 3050 and RTX 3070, showing that the Lovelace GPU (almost certainly the RTX 4050) could perform at the same level as the RTX 3070 while consuming just 40 W instead of 120 W. RTX 3050 GPUs have been popular in thin-and-light designs like the Dell XPS 15 and Surface Laptop Studio, and bringing RTX 3070-level performance to those laptops without requiring RTX 3070-level heat, fan noise, or cooling capacity is a big deal.

Nvidia only releases a new range of mobile GPUs every other year or so, meaning that the RTX 4000 series will likely be the chips powering gaming laptops and mobile workstations from this year until sometime in 2025. RTX 4000-series laptop GPUs will be available starting on February 8 (for the 4080 and 4090) and February 22 (for the other GPUs), though it will presumably take them much longer to fully replace the entrenched 3000-series in most laptops. Pricing will vary, but they will “start at $999.”

Sources: Wounded teen was the gunman in SEPTA Broad Street Line shooting that killed 21-year-old

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Sources tell Action News the teenager wounded during a fatal shooting on a SEPTA subway on Monday afternoon was the one who fired the shots that killed a 21-year-old man.

Philadelphia police had been searching for the gunman who shot the man multiple times on the Broad Street Line train around 2:40 p.m. in the city’s Francisville section.

The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police said a 16-year-old male was shot in the arm during the incident. He was originally reported to be an innocent bystander, however, sources tell Action News that is not the case.

According to sources, the teenager got onto the subway at the Susquehanna Avenue stop and tried to rob the 21-year-old man.

Sources say a struggle ensued and the teenager shot the victim multiple times. Philadelphia police called the shooting a “targeted attack.”

Fourteen fire cartridge casings were found at the scene. Earlier reports said the victim was shot 11 times, but sources say it may have been closer to six.

The victim, who had a permit to carry, was also armed and shot the teenager in the arm.

There were at least a dozen passengers aboard the train car, but no other injuries were reported.

Sources say the 16-year-old later showed up at the hospital but told police he was shot on a basketball court. He denied being shot on the subway at Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue.

That all changed though when his mother arrived at the hospital, sources say.

The mother allegedly knew her son was lying and he eventually confessed to the shooting.

Sources say he told police where he hid the gun.

The teen was released from the hospital and remains in custody.

Action News is told the 16-year-old has two prior arrests for theft.

There is no word on charges.

FBI says it has ‘credible information of a broad threat’ to synagogues in New Jersey

CNN
 —

The FBI in Newark, New Jersey, said Thursday afternoon it has received “credible information of a broad threat to synagogues” in the state, according to a tweet from the office.

“We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility. We will share more information as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police,” the post said.

In a second tweet, the agency said it was taking a “proactive measure” with that warning, while “investigative processes are carried out.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said he is in touch with the FBI, the state’s Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness and the state attorney general.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are working with local law enforcement to ensure that all houses of worship are protected,” Murphy wrote on Twitter.

Over the past few years, the US has seen a rise in antisemitic incidents, with 941 incidents in 2015 jumping to 2,717 tracked in 2021 by the Anti-Defamation League. On Thursday, the ADL said it was working with the FBI to address the credible threat and advised synagogues and Jewish organizations to “remain calm and in heightened state of alert.”

Just over four years ago, a gunman stormed into a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and killed 11 people in the deadliest attack on Jewish people on US soil.

The FBI’s warning on Thursday comes amid continued reports across the country of anti-Jewish bigotry, including multiple antisemitic messages that appeared in public spaces in Jacksonville, Florida, over the weekend, and a group of demonstrators who hung banners over a Los Angeles freeway earlier in October showing support for antisemitic comments that were made by Kanye West. Photos also showed the group with their arms raised in what appeared to be the Nazi salute. Los Angeles officials condemned the incident.

West previously made a series of antisemitic outbursts, notably on October 8, when he tweeted he was “going death con 3 [sic] On JEWISH PEOPLE,” and also that, “You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda,” without specifying what group he was addressing, according to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine records pulled by CNN.

His tweet was removed and Twitter locked his account. In an interview conducted after the controversial tweet, West told Piers Morgan that he was sorry for the people that he hurt but said he didn’t regret making the remark.

CNN has reached out to the FBI for more information on their tweet.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Twitter Is Drafting Broad Job Cuts, Days After Elon Musk’s Takeover

Twitter Inc. is drafting plans for broad layoffs, according to people familiar with the matter, days after the social-media platform was taken private by billionaire

Elon Musk

for $44 billion.

The proposed layoffs are expected to reduce engineering positions as well as affect other areas at the company, one of the people said. Twitter has roughly 7,500 employees, according to a disclosure earlier this year. The full scale of cuts being discussed couldn’t be determined.

Earlier this year, Twitter said it was looking for ways to cut costs because of the macroeconomic environment, adding that it had significantly slowed hiring in the second quarter, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing in July. Social-media companies have grappled with market disruptions that have weighed on digital-ad spending this year, including soaring inflation, recession fears and the war in Ukraine.

Twitter has posted a loss in eight of its past 10 fiscal years, according to FactSet. The New York Times earlier reported Twitter’s plans for job cuts across the company.

Mr. Musk told employees in June that he believed costs were “not a great situation” at Twitter, according to people who viewed a virtual meeting then. He didn’t rule out layoffs, adding that anyone who is a significant contributor shouldn’t worry, according to the people.

Several employees have said they are worried that Mr. Musk could move to cut jobs before Nov. 1, which is a vesting date for Twitter’s compensation program. Employees’ grants were expected to be paid as cash after Mr. Musk’s acquisition, according to people familiar with the issue. A number of employees have said they are concerned Mr. Musk could try to avoid making those payments if their employment is terminated before Nov. 1.

The Musk-Twitter Deal

WSJ Financial Editor Charles Forelle and Alexa Corse, WSJ reporter covering Twitter, discuss Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter. What does the future hold for the platform? And what does this deal mean for Mr. Musk’s business empire?

Before the deal closed, employees whose jobs were eliminated generally expected to receive cash for equity that would have vested within three months of leaving the company, plus the rest of their severance package, according to an internal memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

As part of Mr. Musk’s takeover, Twitter added $13 billion of debt, which analysts say will increase pressure to cut costs and boost revenue. Analysts estimate, based on terms previously laid out in documents related to the transaction, that Twitter will be on the hook for annual interest payments of more than $1 billion, compared with some $51 million in 2021. Twitter has posted average annual earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of about $700 million over the past five years.

Stock futures are up slightly following Thursday’s broad sell-off

Stock futures were up slightly Thursday evening following a sharp sell-off that brought the S&P 500 to a new 2022 low.

Futures for the S&P 500 were up 0.26%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 0.17%. Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.14%.

The 2022 sell-off resumed in full force during regular trading on Thursday as investors weighed concerns over future rate-hiking decisions from the Federal Reserve and the impact on the market.

Apple led Thursday’s decline, closing down 4.9% as the tech giant has faced reports of declining demand for its new products, specifically the iPhone 14 series. Bank of America also downgraded the tech giant, which pressured shares.

At the end of regular trading on Thursday, the S&P 500 dropped 2.1% to 3,640.47. The Dow was down 1.54% to 29,225.61, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.84% to 10,737.51.

The major indexes are also on track to end the week — and September — sharply in the red. The S&P 500 is off 1.4% for the week, while the Dow and the Nasdaq are each down 1.2%. For September, the S&P 500 is down 7.9%, and the Dow is off 7.2%. The Nasdaq is on track for a loss of 9.1% for the month.

“The market stinks,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner of Harris Financial Group. “But that’s basically what the Fed wants: tighten financial conditions, and they believe that that will help bring down inflation to the levels that they find acceptable. And they’re using the transmission mechanism of the market to make that happen.”

Nike shares fell in after-hours trading after the company reported that sales increased, but supply chain and inventory issues hampered the bottom line in its fiscal first quarter. Meanwhile, Amylyx Pharmaceuticals’ shares spiked after the Food and Drug Administration approved its drug for Lou Gehrig’s disease.

On the economic data front, investors will watch for personal income and spending and consumer spending Friday morning. The Federal Reserve’s favorite measure of inflation, the PCE deflator, is also due for August.

Ford F-150 Raptor R Ushers Era of Rich People Hauling Gold in Broad CGI Daylight

At long last, after countless rumors, there is a measured Blue Oval response for the absolute pickup truck hoon, the 2022 Ram Trucks 1500 TRX. Alas, something is definitely amiss with the 2023 F-150 Raptor R.

If I had to throw a wild guess, it might be another case of the Mercedes CEO saying the board must have been “drunk” when they approved this – the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar for them, the less powerful and more expensive than TRX Ford Raptor R for the Detroit corner offices. But that is just my assumption based on two simple facts.

No matter how hard you paint a pretty off-road picture; two values are easy to use in any comparison. Arriving later on the market – thus with enough time to study the competition – the 700-horsepower F-150 Raptor R misses the mark on ponies against the 702-hp Ram 1500 TRX. Yes, there’s just a couple of coltish hp in between them, I’ll give them that.

But the pricing difference is much harder to grasp. A 2022 Ford F-150 XL kicks off at $31,520, for example, but that is just a base model. The 2022 Ram Trucks 1500 TRX has a starting MSRP of $78,890. So, how in the world has the Ford pricing department come up with a base $109,145 quotation? Simple, according to an automotive pixel master – they are just targeting rich folks and their desire to haul “whatever it is rich ppl haul around lol.” Like gold, for instance, and lots of it.

Sure, Oscar Vargas, the virtual artist better known as wb.artist20 on social media, is “just having a little fun!” And he also acknowledges that at least the F-150 Raptor R “finally has a V8.” Probably, that should be enough oomph to help it carry a few hundred bars of gold from the owner’s bank to the yacht, mansion on the hill, or the apocalypse man cave he has got lying around somewhere secret…
