Team USA’s Brianna Decker provides injury update

After suffering a serious leg injury in U.S. women’s hockey’s first game at the Beijing Olympics earlier this week, Team USA star Brianna Decker updated fans on her status with a series of tweets.

Decker posted a photo of herself with a large cast on her left leg and thanked those who reached out to her after the injury, which will keep her off the ice for the rest of the Winter Games.

However, in the series of tweets, Decker revealed that she plans to remain with the team for the remainder of the Olympics.

“I am excited to remain here with the team and help any imaginable way to help to accomplish the original goal (that) we have set out to achieve!” Decker said.

“Thank you to my family here and back home in the USA, and thank you to the fans across the globe cheering us on. We can hear your cheers echoing throughout Beijing. Hand me a clipboard, it’s time to get back to work with my girls. Let’s go USA!”

Team USA won its first game without Decker 5–0 against the Russian Olympic Committee on Saturday. The United States is now 2–0 in preliminary play, and faces Switzerland next on Sunday at 8:10 a.m ET.

Brianna Kupfer news – latest: LAPD identify Shawn Laval Smith as ‘armed and dangerous’ suspect

Neighbour of young woman stabbed to death in LA speaks out

Police have identified a man they believe to be the killer of 24-year-old Brianna Kupfer.

The Los Angeles Police Department said that the suspect, Shawn Laval Smith, 31, should be considered armed and dangerous.

A manhunt is underway for a suspect accused of stabbing 24-year-old Brianna Kupfer to death at the furniture store where she worked in Los Angeles.

Ms Kupfer, a graduate student at the University of California – Los Angeles, was alone on a shift at the Croft House showroom on 13 January when a masked man walked in and attacked her, police said. She was found bleeding out on the floor by a customer 20 minutes later and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nearly a week later, the assailant, believed to be a homeless man, is still at large after surveillance video captured him leaving the shop through a back door and walking calmly down an alley.

In addition to a $50,000 reward from the city council, private donations for information relating to the capture of the suspect have now taken the total to in excess of $250,00.

Investigators said Ms Kupfer, who hailed from Pacific Palisades and worked as a design consultant for the high-end retailer, appeared to have been targeted at random.

Her heartbroken father, Todd Kupfer, spoke out about the tragedy on Monday and blamed politicians’ failure to curb surging crime in the city. On the same day, a soon-to-retire nurse was fatally attacked while waiting for a bus downtown.

Hancock Park

The murder of Ms Kupfer has shocked residents of the affluent Hancock Park neighbourhood.

Situated in the Wilshire area, it sits to the south of Hollywood and Melrose, and to the east of La Brea, approximately four miles west of Downtown Los Angeles.

Centrally-located to the neighbourhood is the Wilshire Country Club. Other nearby landmarks include the LaBrea Tar Pits and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

A sizeable portion of the area is zoned as historically important having been developed in the 1920s. A number of residences of consuls generals are within Hancock Park, including those of Canada, Japan, and the UK — where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stayed on a visit in 2011.

The neighbourhood is approximately 71 per cent White, 13 per cent Asian, eight per cent Hispanic or Latino, four per cent Black, and four per cent mixed race. An estimated 20 per cent of the population is Orthodox Jewish.

Nearby businesses to Croft House, where Ms Kupfer worked, include lighting and plumbing stores, various eateries, a Kosher market, and two Orthodox synagogues.

LAPD identifies UCLA student Brianna Kupfer’s murder suspect

Los Angeles police identified the man they say stabbed UCLA student Brianna Kupfer to death inside a high-end furniture store where she worked, hours after offering a record-breaking $250,000 reward for information leading to the suspected killer.

Shawn Laval Smith, 31, was considered armed and dangerous and “highly likely to be using public transportation,” the LAPD announced Tuesday.

He had been released from jail on $1,000 in October of 2020 after being charged with a misdemeanor, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records showed, but the father of the victim told The Post he “heard his rap sheet is much worse.”

Kupfer, 24, was killed the afternoon of Jan. 13 in a random attack as she worked alone in the store at Croft House on North La Brea Ave., police said.

She had texted a friend to say someone came into the store and was “giving her a bad vibe,” LAPD Lt. John Radtke said at a news conference prior to the release of the suspect’s identity.

The killer then stabbed Kupfer in what cops said was “a random act of violence,” then left through the back door without taking anything, cops said. He was seen calmly walking down the street, according to cops.

A would-be customer later found Kupfer dead. Police had released surveillance footage of the suspect and announced the large reward — a combination of municipal reward money and community donations.

Prior to her murder, Kupfer had texted a friend to say someone came into the store and was “giving her a bad vibe.”

Todd Kupfer said he felt some relief that police were able to identify the suspect who killed his daughter and hoped an arrest will be made soon. He said investigators told him they had a solid break in the case.

“The detectives felt really confident that the surveillance videos and various information they had would lead them to positive identification,” Kupfer told The Post Tuesday night.

“I don’t know exactly what the break was but the detectives told me they were working. These are good detectives who really care about their jobs and who were working very diligently and they were reassuring me that this was something they’re working on 24/7.”

According to Charleston County court records, Smith was charged for felony discharging a firearm on Nov. 14, 2019. He posted a $50,000 bond on Nov. 23, 2019. As part of his release, Smith was ordered not to contact victims or any family members of the victims, and not to verbally harass them on social media.

Shawn Laval Smith has been released from jail on $1,000 in October of 2020 after being charged with a misdemeanor, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records show.
Los Angeles Police Department

The grieving father said that police told him Smith should have been behind bars.

“I heard his rap sheet is much worse than that, but that tells you that somebody is not doing their job and there needs to be a change,” Kupfer said.

“We all recognize that this could have happened to be anybody’s child. It’s just senseless. My daughter was a completely innocent victim and there was 100 percent no provocation.

“This touched a really raw nerve. This needs to be a reminder for everyone to ask themselves, ‘Look, do we really want this kind of danger in our lives? What are we doing here?’ This has to change.”

The killer stabbed Kupfer, as cops said was “a random act of violence,” then left through the back door without taking anything, cops said.
LAPD

Kupfer was studying architectural design and worked at the store as a design consultant.

The 6’3” 190 pound Smith had recently been in Pasadena, Santa Monica, West Hollywood and other southern California locations, according to a poster released by LAPD.

The department said “special attention” should be given to bus stops and train platforms in the search.

A woman who owns a business next door to the store where Ms Kupfer was killed claims she came face-to-face with the suspect moments before the stabbing.

Dr Jennifer Botelho, who runs a chiropractic practice in Hancock Park, said a man matching the suspect’s description came into her store on Thursday afternoon.

“He asked a couple of questions: ‘Do you do orthopedics here?’ What kind of care we provide and then he left. So he was just here for a few minutes,” Dr Botelho told CBS Los Angeles.

She also said that she’s been forced to ramp up security at her business in recent months due to an increase in crime in the neighbourhood.

Offering her condolences to Ms Kupfer’s family, she said: “It’s terrifying. It’s horrible. She’s such a young girl. … We feel so horrible for Brianna’s family, and hope we can catch this guy.”

Neighbor shares regret at missing killer

A neighbour whose home looks out over the alley behind the store where Ms Kupfer was killed has shared his regret that he didn’t catch a glimpse of the suspect as he fled.

John Harding said he frequently watches the alley for suspicious activity, but was out for a walk when the murder took place on 13 January.

“As I work from home, I just look out the window constantly just to see what is that individual doing? Are they just walking through, or are they looking in someone’s car trying to find a door that’s open to a back gate,” he explained to KABC.

“I took my dog for a walk at the time that this happened and I have a little guilt, if only I had walked at a different time, I might have been able to help identify the individual that did this violence to an innocent individual just doing her job.”

Brianna Kupfer: UCLA student stabbed to death at luxury furniture store in LA

A Los Angeles community is in shock after a young woman was randomly stabbed to death at her job.

Police say Brianna Kupfer, 24, was working alone at the furniture store Croft House in Hancock Park on Thursday afternoon when a man wandered into the shop, killed her, and left.

“Detectives have determined the suspect was not known to the victim and was a random walk-in to the store,” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement. “The suspect attacked the victim with a knife and fled the scene through the back door. There is no known motive at this time.”

Police say Brianna Kupfer, 24, was fatally stabbed by a homeless man who walked into the store where she was working

(CBS Los Angeles)

Police say they were alerted to the incident by a Croft House customer, who came into the store about 20 minutes after the attack and was shocked to find Ms Kupfer’s body. By that time, the LAPD says, Ms Kupfer was already dead.

“It’s terrifying. It’s horrible,” Dr Jennifer Botelho, who owns a chiropractor’s office next door, told CBS Los Angeles. “She’s such a young girl … We feel so horrible for Brianna’s family, and hope we can catch this guy.”

According to the LAPD, the suspect is likely a homeless person.

“The suspect is described as a male Black, unknown age, tall, thin, wearing a dark hoody, sunglasses, a white N-95 mask, dark skinny jeans, dark shoes and carrying a dark back pack,” the department said.

Ms Kupfer’s grieving father told the network she was “loved by all.”

The young woman had been studying at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she was earning her graduate degree in architectural design. In her spare time, she worked as a design consultant at Croft House.

“I was just hoping to visit the store, and can’t believe the news,” Lisa Finkenstaedt, an interior designer who frequently worked with Croft House, told Fox 11. “It’s so terrible, it’s so upsetting. I’ve emailed with her a few times. She’s a good salesperson.”

On Friday, a makeshift memorial of flowers and photographs was growing outside Croft House.

“The world has been robbed of a productive member of society – who glowed with positivity,” friends of Ms Kupfer told CBS.

The LAPD has asked anyone with information on the murder or the suspect to contact homicide investigators at (213) 382-9470, or at 1-877-LAPD-24-7 on weekends. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can call 800-222-TIPS.

Victim of Astroworld concert Brianna Rodriguez praised as ‘bright light’ at funeral

Friends and family of Astroworld victim Brianna Rodriguez gathered in Houston Saturday to say their goodbyes to the 16-year-old killed in last week’s catastrophic concert.

Rodriguez was among nine killed during the show when the crowd surged forward, trampling victims.

“It’s devastating. No one could have imagined this would happen,” family friend David Gonzalez, 58, told the Houston Chronicle. “She wasn’t much of a concert person. She was going to go to a party that night, but it got canceled. You can only imagine how her parents feel.”

Many mourners celebrated Rodriguez by wearing her favorite color combination: pink and white.

Rodriguez was with a group in the VIP section at Astroworld when the crowd surged toward the stage during headliner Travis Scott’s performance.

“I’m holding her the whole time but we fell back and we landed on our backs on the bottom of the pile,” Xavier Neal, one of the friends who attended Astroworld with her, told KTRK, the city’s ABC affiliate. “She’s telling me about how she can’t breathe and I’m letting her know I’m here. Like, ‘I’m here, just breathe.’ But I’m down there, I’m trying to breathe myself. I’m listening to her until I can’t hear anymore.”

Rodriguez was a junior at Heights High School in Houston, where she was a member of the school’s award-winning dance team and its band.

“Brianna was like a sister to us,” said Maite Rocha, a dance team member, at a memorial held at the school. “Every time there was music, she would turn to look at us. Every time there was an artist she liked, she would turn to look at us and start dancing.”

At a viewing Friday night, countless people arrived wearing pink t-shirts with the words “Long Live Bri” across the back.

She was praised as a “bright light” by many.

“It sounds cliche but she really would light up a room,” said Leonce Hall, a 6th grade English instructor from Hamilton Middle School who taught Rodriguez, told the Chronicle. “It was no surprise that she was so successful in dance and continued into high school, she was tenacious like that. Such a good kid.”

Rodriguez was the oldest of three siblings, and is also survived by her parents Osvaldo Rodriguez and Ester Rodriguez.

CNN’s Brianna Keilar lectures Nikki Haley on racism in America after former governor said US isn’t racist

CNN anchor Brianna Keilar went after former UN ambassador Nikki Haley for declaring that the U.S. is not a “racist” country.

During Wednesday morning’s “Roll the Tape” segment, which is almost exclusively dedicated to attacking Republicans, Keilar slammed Haley as a “rising star in the GOP” turned “Republican pinball machine,” for remarks she gave at the Reagan Presidential Library on Tuesday.

Keilar accused Haley of “minimizing” the deaths of over 700,000 Americans caused by the coronavirus after the Republican decried “hatred of America” and referred to it as a “pandemic much more damaging than any virus.”

NEW LOW FOR CNN’S ‘NEW DAY’ AS MORNING SHOW CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE

The anchor then played a clip of Haley saying, “Take it from me, the first female and minority governor of South Carolina, America is not a racist country… As a Brown girl growing up in a small southern town, I saw the promise of America unfold before me.”

“She did see the promise of America unfold, but at times she also saw the promise of America denied,” Keilar said before attempting to undercut Haley’s comments using a 2018 clip of her explaining the racism her Sikh Indian family had experienced years ago and a 2010 clip of a former South Carolina state senator using racist rhetoric towards Haley during her first gubernatorial run.

The “New Day” co-host then pushed back at Haley’s 2014 assertion that “systemic racism” was in America’s past by citing the 2015 Charleston church shooting that left nine Black Americans dead. Although she credited Haley for removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol, Keilar accused the former governor of whitewashing the “ups and downs of the American experience with racism and the challenges still ahead, all apparently to appeal to the conservative base” while airing images of the same flag being carried on Jan. 6.

“Nikki Haley courting the followers of Donald Trump, who enlisted the support of anti-government extremists, told the Proud Boys to ‘stand back and stand by’, told Black and Brown nations quote ‘s—hole countries’ and said there are ‘very fine people on both sides’ after a white supremacist killed a woman as she protested a far-right rally,” Keilar said. “Even after Nikki Haley said this about President Trump following January 6th, quote, ‘We need to acknowledge he let us down. He went down a path he shouldn’t have and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again… His actions since Election Day will be judged harshly by history.

“Now she may be right, that history will Donald Trump harshly, but Nikki Haley will not because she is too busy trying to ride his coattails,” Keilar added.

Earlier this year, Keilar went after Haley after the former UN ambassador accused the media of wanting to sow division within the GOP.
