Fraser is currently making the rounds on the awards circuit after The Whale made its theatrical debut last month following months of anticipation from fans and critics, alike.

It’s based on Samuel D. Hunter’s play of the same name, and the playwright also penned the film’s screenplay.

In addition to Fraser and Chau, the movie’s cast included impressive performances by Sadie Sink and Ty Simpkins.

The feature is centered on a reclusive English professor (Fraser) who attempts to reestablish a relationship with his daughter (Sink).

Development on the movie was not officially announced until 2021, when its director and star signed on to work on the project.

Physical production on the feature took place in New York state that same year.

The Whale had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, which occurred last September, before it was released to the public last month.

The movie was met with a mixed response from critics, although the performances of Fraser, Sink and Chau were praised by many.

Fraser has since been nominated for numerous Best Actor awards for his work on The Whale, and he took home the distinction at the recently-held Critics Choice Movie Awards ceremony.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the much-celebrated performer had been put up for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

He is set to go up against Colin Farrell, Bill Nighy, Paul Mescal and Austin Butler for the distinction, which will be given out on March 12.

Brendan Fraser breaks down in tears, ‘The Whale’ receives standing ovation at Venice Film Festival

Brendan Fraser reveled in the spotlight once again at the Venice Film Festival and was praised for his role in the upcoming Darren Aronofsky movie, “The Whale.”

The 53-year-old actor kept his best composure while walking the red carpet of the famed festival, only to break down in tears once inside the cinema as theatergoers gave the star a six-minute standing ovation for his performance, according to Variety.

Fraser, who has largely stayed out of the spotlight after addressing physical ailments due to performing many of his own stunts on screen, was then also plagued by the mental repercussion of an alleged sexual assault incident that happened in 2003.

He’s returning to the silver screen again for what many believe could be an Oscar contending role as Charlie, a 600-pound gay man who feels as though his life is coming to an end.

Fraser was noticeably moved by the response to the film that he could barely stand up as the crowd cheered once the credits rolled when the movie was over in a video captured from inside the festival.

“Brendan Fraser is back — and he sobbed during the #Venezia79 six-minute standing ovation for #TheWhale,” Ramin Setoodeh tweeted.

He then added, “The standing ovation for #TheWhale was so enthusiastic, Brendan Fraser tried to leave the theater but the crowd’s applause made him stay.”

During a pre-show interview with press, Fraser showed gratitude for “the warm reception” he’s received since discussing his latest work.

“I’m looking forward to how this film makes a deep impression on everyone as much as it has on me,” he said, via The New York Times.

Fraser recalled having to wear an extensive amount of prosthetics that sometimes weighed up to 300 pounds to play Charlie, a reclusive character based on the 2012 Off-Broadway play by Samuel D. Hunter.

“I needed to learn to move in a new way,” Fraser said. “I developed muscles that I did not know that I had. I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed, just as you would feel stepping off the boat onto the dock here in Venice.”

But still, walking in Charlie’s footsteps gave Fraser “an appreciation for those whose bodies are similar because I learned that you need to be an incredibly strong person physically, mentally, to inhabit that physical being. And I think that is Charlie.”

The role represents a major comeback for Fraser’s career as it is his first leading role in almost a decade. “The Mummy” star has roles this year in Mart Scorsese’s latest western film “Killers of the Flower Moon” and with Dawn Olivieri and Marcia Cross in “Behind the Curtain of Night.”

When asked if he was excited about the prospects of his career once again, Fraser remained humble.

“My crystal ball is broken,” Fraser said. “I don’t know if yours works, but meet me after the show, and we’ll take a peek together.”

Ivory Aquino asks CEO David Zaslav to release Batgirl

Following the news that Warner Bros. has been hosting “funeral screenings” for the Batgirl film that was axed earlier this month despite being 90% completed, Ivory Aquino has spoken out about the HBO Max project’s shelving. Addressing a series of tweets to new CEO David Zaslav, the actor opens up about the emotional past few weeks for the DC project’s cast and crew.

“I’ve found myself not being able to talk about this ordeal with anyone,” she writes. “I realized that no one, apart from those involved with the film, would truly understand what we’re feeling. And talking about it with my castmates, I feel, might be akin to rubbing salt on a still-open wound.”

The Warner Bros. Discovery merger has led to drastic changes within the company, including numerous other projects getting canceled at HBO Max and existing original shows and movies getting pulled from the platform. Significant layoffs have also occurred.

“I can only endeavor to understand how one feels when tasked with tending to the bottom line like you have,” Aquino tells Zaslav. “I can’t even begin to imagine what one in your position goes through having such great responsibility to attend to. I do know and ask, with something like Batgirl that’s a product of our hearts and souls, that the little cogs not simply be seen as widgets whose fates are determined by an equation to benefit the bottom line. More than widgets, we are fellow human beings and artists who, when given the chance, can outperform the equation and multiply the bottom line exponentially.”

Batgirl was reportedly axed because it would have been cheaper to take a tax write-down on the project than to complete postproduction and give it a marketing budget. Aquino goes on to underline how the recent news cycle has increased the movie’s visibility without a flashy campaign, imploring Zaslav to reconsider his decision. Given that Batgirl was set to feature the return of Michael Keaton as Batman, it’s hard to imagine it needing a huge promotional push in the first place.

If Batgirl ever comes out, it also co-stars Leslie Grace, J.K. Simmons and Brendan Fraser. Read Aquino’s full statement on Twitter.
