The clock speed wars are back as Intel brags about hitting 6 GHz with 13th-gen CPUs

Intel

Intel is gearing up to release the first products in its 13th-generation Core processor family, codenamed Raptor Lake. Among the topline facts that the company announced at its Intel Technology Tour is that at least one member of the Raptor Lake family will be capable of hitting 6 GHz out of the box (via Tom’s Hardware). Core counts and architectural improvements are generally more important than clock speed when it comes to increasing a CPU’s performance these days, but after many years hanging out in the 5 GHz range, it’s neat to hit the next digit.

As for what this means for performance, Intel is saying that Raptor Lake will perform roughly 15 percent better in single-threaded tasks and 41 percent better in multi-threaded workloads than the current 12th-generation Alder Lake chips. Clock speed is more important for boosting single-threaded performance, while adding more cores is usually the best way to improve multi-threaded speeds.

It’s not clear which of the CPUs will be capable of hitting 6 GHz or under what circumstances or for how long. An Intel SKU chart published by Igor’s Lab suggests that the Core i9-13900K will top out at 5.8 GHz, though it’s possible that it’s capable of further boosting beyond that.

Enlarge / A purported SKU chart for the 13th-gen chips doesn’t mention the 6 GHz limit, but boosting works in mysterious ways.

The SKU chart also confirms what we’ve heard from other leaks—despite an architectural similarity to current Alder Lake CPUs, Intel is boosting performance by doubling the maximum number of E-cores in its top-tier CPUs, from eight to 16. The i5-12600K, which included four E-cores, will also be replaced by a Core i5-13600K that includes eight. And if the rest of that leaked desktop CPU lineup holds true, some lower-end Core i5 processors that shipped with no E-cores in the 12th generation will get four or eight in the 13th generation.

This SKU chart also indicates that these top-end Raptor Lake CPUs will include other changes, including increased amounts of L2 and L3 cache available. It also looks like the Maximum Turbo Power consumption of all the chips is going up by between 12 W and 63 W—from 241 W to 253 W for the Core i9, from 190 W to 253 W for the Core i7, and from 150 W to 181 W for the Core i5. The base power for all the chips stays level, at 125 W.

Those maximum power consumption numbers don’t necessarily mean that all Raptor Lake CPUs will consume more power than their Alder Lake counterparts—that will depend on the specific power settings that your motherboard or PC manufacturer chooses to use. It does mean that a Raptor Lake CPU with high power limits and adequate cooling will need more power and better cooling than a similarly configured Alder Lake CPU when running sustained workloads, though.

People old enough to remember installing Windows 98 will recall that clock speed bragging rights were a big deal in the early 2000s. Intel planned to boost its Pentium 4 CPUs from the mid-1 GHz range all the way up to 10 GHz by 2005, but the architecture was just barely able to hit 4 GHz before heat and power consumption both became so high that further increases became untenable (the company’s first attempt at a 4 GHz CPU never saw the light of day).

Russia Brags About Airstrike That Killed 20 at Ukrainian Shopping Mall

As the death toll in Russia’s airstrike on a Ukrainian shopping center full of civilians climbed to 20 on Tuesday, Russian defense officials took full responsibility for the attack—and then bragged about it as a successful military operation.

Igor Konashenkov, a spokesperson for Russia’s defense ministry, described the attack on the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk in a Tuesday briefing, framing it as one of the Russian military’s successful strikes against Ukrainian “military facilities.”

He said the “high-accuracy strike” was conducted not on a shopping mall, but on an arms depot, and that it had successfully destroyed “Western-made weapons and ammunition” intended for Ukrainian troops in the Donbas. Bizarrely, he blamed a fire at the arms depot for the damage at the Amstor shopping mall, which he claimed was “non-functional.”

He made no mention of the 20 civilians killed. An additional 59 people were injured in the strike.

Russia’s version of events is sure to infuriate Ukrainian authorities, who at a Tuesday briefing at the bombed out mall called BS on the Kremlin narrative, showing reporters the children’s toys and consumer goods that were destroyed in what Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky described as a “targeted hit on a civilian facility.”

Photos of what was described as fragments of a Russian missile found at the scene also circulated in Ukrainian media.

In addition to the 20 fatalities confirmed by the Ukrainian presidential office Tuesday, many more people remain unaccounted for. Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the presidential administration, put the figure at 40, while Monastyrsky said at least 21 remain unaccounted for. The head of the Poltava region, Dmytro Lunin, has said 36 people remain missing.

By Tuesday afternoon, Ukrainian authorities said they had found no survivors in the wreckage after hours of searching.

“We hoped that in the first few hours there might still be survivors. But because of the fire that broke out literally in 10-15 minutes after the strike, we can say with certainty that there are no survivors,” Monastyrsky said at a briefing.

Hours earlier, he told reporters rescuers would keep searching for signs of life, adding that most of the victims had not yet been identified as their bodies are “badly burned.”

Some of the Russian pilots involved in the attack have already been identified by Ukrainian intelligence, Monastyrsky said, noting that “there is nothing here that would threaten any of the [Russian] military.”

Ukraine’s prosecutor general has vowed to take the matter to the Hague, as the United Nations Security Council prepared to gather for an emergency session Tuesday.

Family members and friends of shoppers who disappeared after the strike are still waiting near the scene for word on their fate.

“We sent him messages, called, but nothing,” one man, Kiril Zhebolovsky, told Reuters of his agonizing wait to find out what happened to his friend who was working in an electronics store in the mall.

The Monday attack came as Russian forces intensified their strikes during the G7 summit in Germany.

Vadym Denysenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, said the Kremenchuk strike should be seen not only as a warning from Putin to Western nations, but also a clear signal to Russia’s elite that he has no plans to back down in Ukraine.

“There is a very intense phase [of the war] right now, and in the near future, Putin will do everything in his power to intensify such strikes,” Denyskenko said in comments to local media Tuesday.

His warning came as authorities in Mykolaiv announced the fallout of more Russian aggression overnight. According to Governor Vitaliy Kim, a child was killed after Russian forces attacked the city of Ochakiv.

Shailene Woodley brags about Aaron Rodgers’ amid COVID drama

Shailene Woodley bizarrely bragged about how well she knows fiancé Aaron Rodgers’ body — including his nether regions — while shaming an innocent man who was inaccurately ID’d as the NFL player.

The “Big Little Lies” actress took to social media Tuesday to slam Daily Mail for misidentifying the Green Bay Packers quarterback in photos, blasting the outlet for “grasping at straws to disparage Aaron” amid backlash over his COVID-19 vaccine statements.

Woodley, 29, posted screenshots from the story and drew a circle around the mystery man’s feet and added three pink arrows pointing to them.

“i know aaron’s body. VERY well. first off, his feet, ahem and no offense to this rando dude, are a LOT bigger. ;).”

Woodley called it “straight up HILARIOUS” that paparazzi are “finding random f–king men on the streets of la and saying it’s him.”

Woodley alluded to Rodgers’ penis size, saying his feet are actually bigger than the misidentified man’s.

“literally y’all need to calm the f–k down,” she added.

The “Fault in Our Stars” actress didn’t stop there. She next pointed out the fact that the innocent bystander had bald hands.

The “Fault in Our Stars” actress attempted to defend the quarterback by calling out the innocent bystander on her Instagram Story.

“also, for those of us who know aaron beyond the worlds of obsessed sport and s–tty media, it’s no secret he has the hairiest hands on the f–king planet. this oblivious homie, clearly, does not. (go ahead, zoom in),” she wrote over a second Instagram Story slide.

Lastly, Woodley went after the man’s car, which obviously was not good enough for Rodgers.

Woodley even mocked the man’s car, saying Rodgers “would never” drive those wheels.

“also, cute car dude, but aaron would never drive this,” she added.

All of this appears to be “The Spectacular Now” actress’ attempt to defend Rodgers, 37, as he continues to take heat for saying he was “immunized” for COVID when he was never vaccinated at all.

Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley — seen here on vacation with Miles Teller and his wife earlier this year — confirmed their engagement in February.

Woodley previously took a more subtle defense of her fiancé by posting a cryptic comment on Instagram.

“Calm Seas May Bring You Peace, But Storms Are Where You’ll Find Your Power,” read a quote Woodley shared.
