Duane Brown to sign with Jets: Arrival of five-time Pro Bowler fills gaping hole, but leaves one big question
The New York Jets had a gaping hole on their offensive line after losing Mekhi Becton to injury this week, and it looks like they might have just filled that hole in.
CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson has reported that the Jets have agreed to terms with Duane Brown on a two-year deal. According to ESPN.com, the Brown’s contract with the team is worth a total of $22 million.
Brown is a five-time Pro Bowler who was easily the best offensive lineman left on the market. The Jets had actually shown some interest in Brown before Becton’s injury with the 36-year-old visiting with the team on Aug. 6. Two days after that visit, Becton went down with a devastating knee injury during practice that will likely end up keeping him out for most of the season, if not the entire season. With Becton out, getting Brown under contract became an immediate priority for the Jets.
With Brown headed to New York, the next step for the Jets is to figure out the big question of where he’s going to play. Becton was slotted in at right tackle, but Brown likely won’t want to play there since he’s spent his entire 15-year career at left tackle.
Former Seahawks offensive line coach Mike Solari spent three seasons coaching Brown in Seattle and he doesn’t think it would make sense to move the big guy to the right side.
“Could he do it? Yes, he has the essential qualities,” Solari told the New York Post this week. “But I think with what he gives on the left side, I would not move him from where he’s comfortable at this stage of his career. The adjustment I’d make is to move George [Fant] back to right because he’s played both.”
If the Jets move Brown to left tackle, that would mean moving Fant over to right tackle, which is something Fant might not be on board with. That being said, Fant and Brown did spend some time together as teammates in Seattle and during that span, Brown was the left tackle with Fant playing on the right side. Since the two guys have some familiarity with each other, that will likely make Fant more amicable to being moved.
As for Brown, he’s going to be 37 on Aug. 30 and although he’s getting up there in age, Solari thinks the tackle still has plenty left in the tank.
“He’s definitely got something left in the tank,” Solari said. “Great knee-bender, and what makes him elite is his athleticism and his change of direction. Very competitive, smart, leader on and off the field. He’d be an asset for the Jets in the sense of his play, his demeanor and his work ethic.”
Brown has been in the NFL since 2008, when the Texans made him the 26th overall pick in the draft. In the 15 years since then, he has played almost exclusively at left tackle.
No matter where Brown plays, he was a much-needed addition who should be an instant upgrade to the Jets’ offensive line. The only issue with the signing of Brown is that there’s still a chance he could be punished by the NFL over an arrest last month. Back in July, Brown was charged with misdemeanor carrying of a concealed weapon after being arrested at Los Angeles International Airport.

Giants sign former Cowboys Pro Bowler Jaylon Smith to practice squad two days before NFC East rematch
Enemies became friends on Friday, as the Giants signed former Cowboys Pro Bowler Jaylon Smith to their practice squad, welcoming an ex-division rival just two days before New York is set to host Dallas in an NFC East rematch. Released by the Cowboys in October, the veteran linebacker appeared in two games for the Packers this season. Now, he’s joined the Giants as emergency depth — and perhaps for some Cowboys preparation tips — ahead of Week 15.
Smith, 26, was one of the Cowboys’ top defenders at the height of five-year career in Dallas. A 2019 Pro Bowler, the Notre Dame product quickly emerged as a play-maker after missing his entire rookie season due to knee surgery, totaling 418 tackles, eight sacks and two interceptions from 2017-2019. Surpassed by rookie Micah Parsons on the linebacker depth chart this year, Smith was released on Oct. 5 and signed with Green Bay on Oct. 7, spending just under a month as a backup with the Packers.
The Giants, who have lost three of their last four, are starved for linebacker depth going into Sunday’s game against Dallas. Blake Martinez, Carter Coughlin, Oshane Ximines, T.J. Brunson, Trent Brown, Justin Hilliard and Cam Brown are all either banged up or on injured reserve.

Ex-NFL Star Demaryius Thomas Dead At 33, 5x Pro Bowler
Demaryius Thomas, Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowler, has died at the age of 33, police tell TMZ Sports.
The cause of death is currently unclear … but police tell us they found Thomas deceased in his Roswell, GA home Thursday night.
Cops tell us preliminary reports suggest the death stemmed from a medical issue. They also tell us there are currently no indications that foul play was involved.
Thomas — the 22nd overall pick out of Georgia Tech in the 2010 NFL Draft — evolved into one of the best wide receivers in the league.
During his nine-season NFL career with the Broncos, Texans, Patriots and Jets, he made made five Pro Bowls … and won Super Bowl 50 alongside quarterback Peyton Manning in the 2015 season.
Thomas caught 724 balls and accumulated 9,763 yards and 63 touchdowns throughout his incredible career.
We also talked to his former Broncos teammate, linebacker Brandon Marshall, who tells us he and his ex-Denver teammates are heartbroken over the loss.
One of those famed teammates, legendary pass rusher DeMarcus Ware, has already posted a tribute picture to Thomas on social media … writing in the caption, “Heartbroken.”

Broncos’ Pro Bowler Bradley Chubb to undergo ankle surgery, expected to miss at least 6 to 8 weeks
The Broncos are 2-0 to start the 2021 season, a surprise early-season contender in the AFC West. But their second straight win didn’t come without a price. As the team announced Tuesday, Pro Bowl pass rusher Bradley Chubb will undergo arthroscopic ankle surgery this week to repair an injury aggravated in Denver’s Week 2 win over the Jaguars. As a result, the outside linebacker is likely headed to injured reserve, where he’ll be sidelined at least three weeks, though NFL Network reports Chubb could miss anywhere from six to eight weeks, if not more, while in rehab.
Chubb initially hurt his ankle about three weeks ago, prior to the start of the season, as the Broncos’ Aric DiLalla notes, with the former first-round pick sitting out Week 1 as part of a conservative approach to recovery. He exited Sunday’s win over Jacksonville late in the second quarter, however, after experiencing discomfort while rushing the quarterback. His surgery will involve removing a bone spur.
“I did everything I could to manage it and to try to come back and play,” Chubb said, per the Broncos’ official website. “I took the New York week … trying to calm it down just a little bit, and then this Jacksonville week I tried to do everything to get back on the field, and unfortunately, all those things weren’t working in my favor. The thing (to do) is now just to go in, clean it up and be right back.”
“Be right back,” of course, sounds more time-sensitive than Chubb’s projected recovery timetable. In the meantime, the Broncos figure to lean more on reserve outside linebackers Jonathon Cooper, Malik Reed and Andre Mintze opposite Von Miller.
This isn’t the first time Chubb has been forced to miss extended time due to injury. In 2019, a year after debuting with 12 sacks as a rookie, he suffered a partial ACL tear in Week 4, subsequently sitting out Denver’s final 12 games.

Steelers sign former Chargers Pro Bowler Melvin Ingram to a one-year deal, per report
The Steelers had already added a former Chargers Pro Bowler to bolster depth at a key position this summer, signing longtime guard Trai Turner to replace the departed David DeCastro. Now, nearly a month after Turner’s arrival, Pittsburgh has signed former Chargers pass rusher Melvin Ingram to a one-year contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The news comes one day after CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported that the Steelers were seeking help at pass rusher heading into training camp.
Ingram remained patient on the open market despite having received interest from the Chiefs and Dolphins, according to Rapoport. Ingram, who visited the Steelers on Monday, apparently liked his visit enough to spend the 2021 season in Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh has added few pass rushers since losing former first-round pick Bud Dupree via free agency this offseason. With training camp around the corner, they recently expressed interest in Justin Houston, the 32-year-old former Chiefs and Colts starter who remains unsigned, per La Canfora.
The Steelers have arguably one of the NFL’s top edge rushers in two-time All-Pro T.J. Watt, who’s had three straight 13-sack seasons and is coming off a career-high 15 sacks. With Dupree gone, however, they’re set to rely on rookie Quincy Roche and reserves like Alex Highsmith and Cassius Marsh to take snaps opposite Watt.
Ingram represents an immediate upgrade at the outside linebacker spot. The former Chargers first-rounder is 32 and missed nine games in 2020 due to a knee injury, finishing without a single sack for the first time in his NFL career. When healthy, however, he’s long been one of the game’s steadiest pass rushers. A three-time Pro Bowler, he went five straight seasons with at least seven sacks from 2015-2019, twice hitting double digits and playing all 16 games four times during that span.
Other notable pass rushers still on the market include longtime Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen, ex-Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin, former Browns and Giants starter Olivier Vernon and former Falcons first-rounder Vic Beasley.
