An Open-World Game With BOTW Vibes, Except You’re Not Human

The Gecko Gods is an upcoming exploration and puzzle game by Louis Waloschek (and other collaborators) that puts the player in control of a gecko crawling its way around an open island. The game saw a bit of an uptick in interest yesterday as the developer announced it will come to Switch, and it sure looks cute.

What sticks out, to me, is how, because the gecko can climb on walls and ceilings, it opens up new dimensions for you to explore and for the team to design puzzles around. Because of this, entire rocky structures within its temples become space for level design, and it’s a neat way to have to think about the environment as you climb around it and solve puzzles.

The Gecko Gods also has sailing segments, and it’s adorable to watch the little gecko try to man the boat all by itself, as it has to steer with its mouth while also managing the motor to start and stop. It’s an interesting design decision that can ground you in what it’s like to be an inhuman thing operating something built for humans. Hopefully the novelty keeps that from getting frustrating. The exploration and puzzle solving seems to be broken up by combat sections, and while our gecko friend here isn’t sporting any weapons in the trailer, it looks like it has a mean bite and is quick on its feet.

The whole thing seems to take clear inspiration from different eras of The Legend of Zelda series. The sailing is evocative of Wind Waker, the environment and character design feels plucked from Breath of the Wild, and all-in-all, it just looks like it’s going for that sense of mystery and serenity. Color me intrigued.

The Gecko Gods is set to launch on Steam and Switch in 2023.

Zelda BOTW 2 Now Has Totally New Name, Release Date And Trailer

Image: nintendo

It’s been a long while since we’ve heard anything about the next Zelda game, hasn’t it? Fortunately, today’s Nintendo Direct finally gave us another glimpse of the highly anticipated action adventure game by Nintendo, to hold us steady until its release next year. It’s coming on 5/13/2022, and it’s called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild 2, it should be noted, isn’t the game’s official name, though I’m sure many of us will be calling it that for a long time to come. It does, after all, seem to have a direct connection to the previous open-world game. It’s kind of funny to get the announcement of the game’s title this far in, but for a long time, Nintendo insisted that the “real” name of the new BotW game would spoil something about the premise. So, any going theories as to what the title could be referring to, lore folks?

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Coming May 12th, 2023 – Nintendo Switch

The trailer is pretty brief and doesn’t give away much. The name and release date are the big news items here. But what we do see largely focuses on what appears to be in-game hieroglyphics, which might be pointing toward a myth or the larger story. There’s some kind of deity that appears to be surrounded by icons that I’m going to guess are the proverbial tears. There was, however, some brief gameplay shown, which emphasized how much Link will be taking to the skies here. He has a glider now! And there will still be plenty of climbing, it seems.

Prior to this, the drought of news in 2022 led fans to desperation, as people attempted to extrapolate whatever bits of information they could from accidental spoilers from an Italian voice actor. We have, however, gotten a decent look at what’s going to be in the game. Aside from the desiccated husk that has now become the internet’s boyfriend, we also know that the BotW sequel emphasizes verticality. Some chunks of the world have been ripped out of the ground, becoming sky islands in the process. And Link now appears to be able to teleport above (and possibly below?) himself.

Some have likened these elements of BotW 2 to Skyward Sword, but who knows what the thrust of the final game might be? The initial reveal trailer, for example, had more of a horror feel to it. Even some of those loftier scenes in the sky are tinged with bleakness, given that the islands floating in the clouds are often infested by a blight. No wonder, then, that there are already a wide variety of wild fan theories regarding where BotW 2 goes next.

As Nintendo tells it, BotW 2 exists because the developer couldn’t fit all of its initial ideas into the first game. Some have speculated that, for this reason, the concept art for the first BotW game might hide some secrets regarding where the franchise is headed.

“Initially we were thinking of just DLC ideas,” Aonuma said during an interview, “but then we had a lot of ideas and we said, ‘This is too many ideas, let’s just make one new game and start from scratch.’”

Random: Requests For Zelda Ports Increase Following BOTW 2 Switch Delay

Image: Nintendo

Yesterday, was a pretty rough one for Switch owners, with Nintendo announcing the delay of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. On a more positive note, it at least gives Nintendo more time to make this anticipated release even better.

The only problem we have now is that the Switch could be without a Zelda game for 2022. So what can Nintendo do about this? As usual, social media has chimed in, and there are calls for the company to port Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to the hybrid platform.

As you might recall, there was a rumour doing the rounds early last year that Nintendo would port both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to the Switch. And after yesterday’s news, 2022 would now be a great opportunity to do this.

What do you think though? Should Nintendo fill the Zelda gap in 2022 with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess? Tell us below.

Breath of the Wild Named Best Video Game of All-Time

Since the Nintendo Switch launched back in March of 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been considered one of the greatest games of all-time. It seems that a lot of people feel that way, as the game ranked number one in a Japanese poll conducted by TV Asahi. The poll apparently received 50,000 votes in total, which were used to compile the 100 greatest games ever. While the majority of the top 10 featured games that would be considered “retro,” it also featured three other Switch games, surprisingly enough. The full Top 10 can be found below:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  2. Dragon Quest V
  3. Final Fantasy VII
  4. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  5. Splatoon 2
  6. Dragon Quest III
  7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  8. Chrono Trigger
  9. Final Fantasy X
  10. Super Mario Bros. 3

As with any poll, it’s important to remember that this is all subjective. Breath of the Wild is no doubt an incredible game, but many fans would argue whether or not it’s even the best Zelda game ever! However, the list really says a lot about the Nintendo Switch’s success in Japan. The fact that four of the console’s games made the top 10 shows just how well-loved the system is in the region. With Switch entering its sixth year of existence, it will be interesting to see if the console starts to cool down.

Of course, 2022 is already looking like a promising year for Switch owners! The sequel to Breath of the Wild is currently slated to drop next year, as is Splatoon 3. Fans will just have to wait patiently to find out if these sequels can live-up to their predecessors, but Nintendo hasn’t offered much in the way of details. Hopefully we can expect to learn more over the next few months. In the meantime, readers can check out all of our previous coverage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild right here.
