Klay Thompson ejected in career first after jawing with Devin Booker, Suns

PHOENIX — Warriors guard Klay Thompson was ejected for the first time in his career after picking up two consecutive technical fouls during a chippy third quarter in Golden State’s 134-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.

It was the five-time All-Star’s first career ejection in 759 regular-season and playoff games.

Thompson had been verbally sparring with Phoenix’s Devin Booker for several minutes through the third quarter — repeating over and over again that he had four rings, according to Booker. With 6½ minutes left in the quarter, the two continued to exchange words and then bumped chests, resulting in double technicals on both players.

“There was chirping on both ends, I know that,” Warriors forward Draymond Green said. “I think [the Suns] were very emotional.”

As Thompson started to walk away, Mikal Bridges walked into him. Thompson shoved Bridges away and shortly after was issued his second technical foul, leading to his ejection. Thompson had to be held back by teammate Stephen Curry and Warriors assistant coach Chris DeMarco.

“After he got thrown out, he had a lot more to say, which I love,” Curry said. “The back and forth is a part of [the game], and I like that he’s engaged in that respect because it matters to him.”

A total of seven technical fouls were assessed in the third quarter between the two teams, all in less than six minutes. Green and Warriors coach Steve Kerr, along with Phoenix players Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton also were whistled for technicals for various outbursts, with most of that ire directed at the officials. Those seven technicals tied the most in a single quarter over the past 25 seasons, according to Elias Sports Bureau research.

“I think both teams want it. I don’t think it’s personal at all. I think we just respect them. They’re the champions,” Phoenix coach Monty Williams said. “So, they’re going to get our best because they are the best. So, I think a lot of the emotion is just about being competitive. We don’t take it personally at all, we just understand better that once all that stuff happens, we got to get back on focusing being competitive and trying to win the game.”

As Thompson left the court, he continued to yell at the Suns’ bench, waving at them while pointing to his hand, reiterating the same message he was chirping in Booker’s ear.

“We’re just two competitors,” Booker said. “I love Klay Thompson. I have for a really long time. But it’s not going to excuse from us being competitive and talking to each other. I’ve always admired his game, how he plays on both ends of the ball. And obviously, the rings speak for themselves.”

Describing the trash talk between the two, Booker summarized: “They have four rings, repeated over and over, and they do, and they did.”

Thompson didn’t speak with the media following the game.

With Booker as the primary defender, Thompson shot 0-for-4, including 0-for-3 from 3, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. He finished the night with just 2 points on 1-of-8 shooting in 19 minutes.

Meanwhile, Booker led all scorers with 34 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including three 3-pointers. He also made 11 of 14 free throws. Booker has scored 130 points through his first four games — the most through four games of a season in Suns history.

“He and Book have gotten into it a little bit over the years, they’re just competitors, both great players — I remember four or five years ago when Book was first coming up, Klay was in his prime, he went at it one night in Oracle and same type of thing happened,” Kerr said. “There were no ejections, but they’re both competitive, they’re guarding each other, and this is the NBA. Highest competition in the world, stuff like that happens.”

Kerr said Thompson has been frustrated playing under his current minutes restriction as he returns to his full conditioning. At shootaround earlier in the day, Thompson said he wasn’t expecting to need to exercise the same kind of patience as he did when he returned from a two-year hiatus last season.

“Klay cares so much about his own impact on the team,” Kerr said. “He wants it so badly and he’s trying to force it right now. He’s trying too hard. But he’s done that many times, even before the injuries. So I’ll remind him: There are 78 games to go.”

In the midst of the chaos in the third, the Suns were playing well, and their lead grew to 19 points by quarter’s end. Without Thompson, the defending NBA champs were never able to mount a rally, and the Suns kept a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

“We’ve got to remember that [as] defending champs, there’s a different glow when you walk in,” Curry said. “Teams are trying to come at you, especially on the road, get their crowd into it. Their emotions are running high and they fed off of it. … They had a bit of an edge after that moment that they capitalized on.”

In the moments following Thompson’s ejection, the Suns outscored the Warriors 22-9. But Kerr said he doesn’t believe that’s when the game was lost. Instead, it was at the free throw line, where Phoenix attempted 34 (and made 28) to Golden State’s 17 attempts (with 13 makes).

“We lost our way,” Kerr said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’re not a finished product, by any means. … We’re nowhere close to where we need to be right now. We’re a very poor defensive team, and that doesn’t win in this league.”

The Warriors’ defensive woes start with their transition defense, Kerr said. As they got that issue cleaned up, they began fouling, which Kerr attributed to them being late on rotations. The Warriors allowed the Suns to score 72 points in the first half — the third game they’ve given up at least 70 points in a half this season.

“The commitment to defense isn’t there,” Green said. “That’s something we have to be better at, and it starts with me. And I’ll make sure we get there. But right now, we are a decent offensive team and a bad defensive team. I don’t expect that to be the case. It’s something we can change, we’ve just got to commit to it.”

Booker T Recalls Getting Saraya In Trouble Backstage At WWE

Saraya’s AEW debut at “Grand Slam” on Wednesday and the rapturous response she received from the audience at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, N.Y., prompted WWE Hall of Famer Booker T to recall fond memories of working with her in WWE when she was known as Paige.

On his “Hall of Fame” podcast, Booker spoke about the jubilation from the AEW audience and Saraya’s joy at being welcomed back after not having wrestled since 2017 due to a neck injury.

“That smile was just radiating through the arena,” Booker said about Saraya. “So yeah, man. I’m glad to see her back. Me personally, Paige has always been one of my favorites. She’s always been that chick, so I’m just glad to see her back.”

Booker recalled that having Saraya as part of the WWE roster was always fun.

“I’m serious, it was like a night off working with Paige,” he continued. “I remember getting her in trouble one night because I told her to introduce me at the ‘OG brother from the hood.’ [She got] so much e-mail [and] social media, people were blowing her up. I actually had to go out and defend her and say, ‘Come on, guys, I told her to say that’. … She wouldn’t have done anything like that. I always had a good time working with Paige.”

Booker commended Saraya’s eagerness to return to wrestling following the painful circumstances that led to her stepping away.

“I’m just glad to see her still chasing that dream,” he said. “Because, man, that’s what this thing is all about.”

Does Booker T See Vince McMahon Returning To WWE TV?

The word “retirement” can have several different meanings in sports… You can retire like the late Kobe Bryant, dropping 60 points in his final game, grabbing the microphone, and emphatically stating “Mamba out,” ending one of the most significant NBA careers of all time. Or, you can retire like NFL Quarterback Tom Brady did earlier this year, saying his goodbyes and then announcing six weeks later that he was coming back for his 23rd season in the NFL.

Flipping to sports entertainment and professional wrestling, however, retirements don’t usually end up being the end for talent. Although many have retired and never wrestled again, stars constantly make appearances on shows, hitting their iconic finishers, or they’re used in ways to help build other stories.

An excellent example is WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels, who wrestled one match after his retirement WrestleMania 26. Still, it has been involved in several storylines and angles since and used by the company during several anniversary shows.

With news of Vince McMahon announcing his 40+ year time with the WWE had to end just before the July 22 “SmackDown,” some believe Vince’s retirement won’t be any different from that of superstars in the past.

“I wouldn’t be shocked if Vince came back to the WWE. I definitely won’t be shocked if Vince made appearances periodically,” WWE Hall of Famer Booker T said during the latest episode of “The Hall of Fame with Booker T and Brad Gilmore” podcast. “I wouldn’t be shocked at all because he’s an attraction … I could see Vince back in some capacity.”

Unlike Booker, who believes WWE could use Vince as an attraction, AEW World Champion CM Punk doesn’t believe Vince’s retirement will mean his role with the company will change. Punk stated that he doesn’t think the structure will change in WWE and still believes Vince will be hands-on despite retiring.

In contrast to those comments, WWE quickly transitioned from Vince’s retirement, announcing that Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan would replace him as Co-CEOs of WWE and that Triple H would be stepping up as Head of Talent Relations and Creative. With a new dynamic in the creative walls of WWE, Booker believes this could heavily impact talent in certain positions.

“A lot of these guys are used to dealing with Mr.McMahon directly, and there’s a certain comfort there that these guys have with Vince,” Booker said. “They can knock on that door, go in there, and they can actually have a conversation with him and get that wisdom, that advice from Vince. I’m going to tell you right now, a lot of guys cherish that. A lot of guys went through their whole careers having Vince be that umbrella.”

See Kendall Jenner and Devin Booker Reunite After Breakup

Kendall Jenner may have put Devin Booker back in the game.

On June 26, the 26-year-old and Phoenix Suns player, 25, were spotted spending time together at the SoHo House in Malibu, Calif., just days after news of their split surfaced. In the photos, Kendall and Devin were all smiles as they cozied up next to each other outside at the private membership club.

An eyewitness told E! News that the pair looked happy and “had great energy between them” during the outing. At one point, the insider noted, Kendall giggled after Devin whispered something in her ear.

“They shared things on their phones and laughed,” the eyewitness said. “Kendall was looking up and smiling at Devin.”

Their reunion comes nearly a week after a separate source told E! News that the two had called it quits, saying that Kendall and the NBA star faced a challenging time in their relationship in the weeks after attending Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker‘s Italian wedding together.

“They had a really nice time in Italy together,” the second insider explained. “But once they got back, they started to feel like they weren’t aligned and realized they have very different lifestyles. Kendall told Devin she wanted space and time apart.”

Democratic candidate Charles Booker wears a noose in campaign ad to highlight nation’s painful history of lynching and criticize Sen. Rand Paul (R).

Placeholder while article actions load

Charles Booker, the Democratic nominee challenging Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), wears a noose in a new campaign ad in which he seeks to highlight the nation’s painful history of lynching and Paul’s opposition to a 2020 bill to make it a federal hate crime.

“The pain of our past persists to this day,” Booker says in the ad. “In Kentucky, like many states throughout the South, lynching was a tool of terror. It was used to kill hopes for freedom.”

The camera pans to reveal a noose around Booker’s neck.

“It was used to kill my ancestors,” he says. “Now, in a historic victory for our commonwealth, I have become the first Black Kentuckian to receive the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.”

“My opponent?” Booker continues, as images of Paul flash on the screen. “The person who single-handedly blocked an anti-lynching act from being federal law.”

The ad does not mention that Paul supported an updated bill, known as the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, that passed in the Senate in March and is now law. Paul did single-handedly hold up the legislation in 2020, saying he was concerned it could be applied too broadly.

In March, Paul acknowledged to the Louisville Courier-Journal that “it wasn’t a popular stand to slow this bill down” in 2020 but that he still thought it had been the right thing to do. Paul later co-sponsored the updated bill, which was introduced by Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.).

“In the end, I think the compromise language will hopefully keep us from incarcerating somebody for some kind of crime that’s not lynching,” Paul told the newspaper. “We just wanted to make sure that the punishment was proportional to the crime, and I guess it’s just good news that it finally worked out.”

In a statement Wednesday, Jake Cox, Paul’s deputy campaign manager, suggested Booker’s ad was “a desperate misrepresentation of the facts.

“Dr. Paul worked diligently with Senators Booker and Scott to strengthen the language of this legislation and is a cosponsor of the bill that now ensures that federal law will define lynching as the absolutely heinous crime that it is,” Cox said.

President Biden signed the Emmett Till Antilynching Act into law in March, noting that it had taken more than a century of failed efforts to pass a federal law that expressly prohibited lynching.

“For a long time, lynching was pure terror to enforce the lie that not everyone, not everyone belongs in America, not everyone is created equal,” Biden said then in a Rose Garden ceremony after the bill’s signing. “Innocent men, women and children hung by nooses from trees, bodies burned and drowned and castrated. Their crimes? Trying to vote, trying to go to school, trying to own a business or preach the gospel. False accusations of murder, arson and robbery. Simply being Black.”

The new law amends the U.S. Code to designate lynching a hate crime punishable by as many as 30 years in prison. More than 4,000 people, mostly African Americans, were reported lynched in the United States from 1882 to 1968 in all but a handful of states. Ninety-nine percent of perpetrators escaped state or local punishment.

Booker and Paul will face off in the November general election. Paul faced four challengers in the May 17 Republican primary but won handily. Booker, a former Kentucky state representative and Louisville native, was unsuccessful in his attempt to be the Democratic Senate nominee in 2020 but also easily won his primary race last month.

Booker’s new ad also calls out Paul for once comparing expanded health care to slavery and for his past criticisms of the Civil Rights Act.

Felicia Sonmez and Eugene Scott contributed to this report.

Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker gets OK to return for Game 6 against New Orleans Pelicans

NEW ORLEANS – Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker will return for his team’s Game 6 against the New Orleans Pelicans Thursday night after missing the last three games with a strained right hamstring, Suns coach Monty Williams said.

Booker was officially upgraded to questionable shortly before the game and had been expected to test the leg in pregame warmups before getting the OK. Williams said he’d progressed well in recent days as the Suns took a 3-2 series lead.

“It’s hard this time of the year to mimic an NBA game,” Williams said of what led to Booker’s return. “He’s been on the floor with (Suns assistant coach) Jarrett Jack a few times. And doing the best he can to get to that point.”

Williams was asked if the Suns would be monitoring Booker’s minutes tonight and he just smiled and said, “Yes,” adding that Booker’s return gives the Suns “roster balance.”

“It helps to kind of settle the order of the team a little bit, relatively speaking,” Williams said. “He won’t play his normal, 36, 38, 40 workload but it still gives you a bit more balance.”

Booker scored 25 points in the Suns’ Game 1 win and then had 31 points in the first half of Game 2 before suffering the injury in the third quarter and leaving the eventual loss.

ESPN’s Andrew Lopez contributed to this report.
