Bitcoin calls traders’ bluff with fresh $40K fakeout as Fed decision day arrives

Bitcoin (BTC) tested traders’ neves yet again on March 16 as a fresh spike over $40,000 ended in minutes.

Shorts feel the burn after abrupt trip to $41,700

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView showed BTC/USD suddenly surging to highs of $41,700 on Bitstamp — before instantly reversing.

Two hourly candles was all it took for the entire market to rise by $2,000, break significant resistance levels and come all the way back down again.

The move, while recently commonplace, was not without its casualties, as evidenced by liquidations across exchanges.

According to data from on-chain monitoring resource Coinglass, Bitcoin accounted for $98 million of these over the 24 hours to the time of writing. Total crypto liquidations for the period were just over $200 million.

While still in the middle of its established trading range, BTC/USD took out resistance at both $40,000 and $41,000 before the latter strengthened once the pair had deflated.

On Wednesday, $41,000 remained as the sell-side pressure, but a significant build-up of sellers had yet to reappear at $40,000, data from Binance’s orderbook compiled by monitoring resource Material Indicators showed.

“Snooze party” until Fed rate hike announcement?

For analysts, meanwhile, the immediate past paled in significance compared to what the immediate future was apt to bring Wednesday.

At 2pm Eastern Time, the United States Federal Reserve is primed to reveal moves on interest rates, something many were keenly watching as a potential price paradigm shifter.

For popular trader and analyst Crypto Ed, there was thus nothing to see until the news came.

Twitter account PlanC meanwhile argued that the market had already accounted for the expected 0.25% rate hike, but that this would not help macro inflationary forces — which themselves arguably advertise BTC as a store of value.

“The FED will raise rates 25 basis points, which is already priced in and will do nothing to stop inflation,” the account summarized.

BTC/USD traded at around $39,500 at the time of writing, still above Tuesday’s levels.

Gold investors call Fed’s inflation bluff

Gold investors are taking the wheel, setting the precious metal up for a major rally as investors realize the Federal Reserve is powerless against rising and persistent inflation, according to one strategist.

The precious metal on Thursday was flirting with a sixth straight day of gains, hovering near $1,800 an ounce. It has rallied 8.5% since touching a nine-month low of $1,677.70 an ounce on March 8.

“Markets are basically preparing for the wrong outcome,” said Peter Schiff, CEO and president of Westport, Connecticut-based Euro Pacific Capital.

Schiff says markets are finally starting to come to the conclusion that “inflation is not transitory,” and is a problem the Federal Reserve will try to solve with rate hikes and tapering.

FORGET INFLATION – DEFLATION COULD REAR ITS UGLY HEAD SOON

Investors have begun pricing in tighter monetary policy, and therefore a weaker economy, by buying U.S. dollars and Treasurys.

The dollar this week hit a three-month high against a basket of its peers heavily weighted in favor of the euro. This as the 10-year yield fell to 1.25%, or -95 basis points when adjusted for inflation, both of which were the lowest since February.

At the same time, investors have been unloading their bets on inflation and economic growth, like commodities and cyclical stocks, in anticipation the Fed will successfully fend off the bout of inflation it says is temporary.

But the tide is turning against the Fed’s narrative that inflation is transitory.

International Monetary Fund managing director Kristalina Georgieva warned that additional fiscal support could “further fuel inflationary pressures” and cause the Fed to raise rates earlier than expected.

Schiff says the Fed knows inflation isn’t transitory and that central bank has been pushing that narrative because it is in “no position” to fight higher prices as it looks to support the labor market and the economy.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE GIANTS SOUND INFLATION ALARM

“When the markets figure this out, that’s when gold is really going to take off,” he added.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs said in a note sent to clients on Tuesday that gold has “material upside” should the global recovery not play out as expected and inflation increases “significantly above expectations.”

In that scenario, the firm says gold could reach $2,300 an ounce, or $300 more than in its base-case scenario.

Meanwhile, strategists at Bank of America say a pickup in inflation should “bring new buyers into the market,” but worry that tighter monetary policy will keep the precious metal range bound. They lowered their 2021 target to $1,828 from $1,843 while holding their 2022 target at $1,850.

Not everyone is calling for higher gold prices.

Adam Hoyes, an assistant economist at London-based Capital Economics, anticipates higher inflation in the years ahead but warns “long-dated real yields in the U.S. will rise significantly,” serving as a headwind for gold.

He sees gold’s price falling to $1,550 per ounce by the end of 2022.

Maestro Teaser: Blind Man’s Bluff

March 30, 2021

Thrillers have a special place for audiences and the spine-chilling moments on screen give them edge of the seat experience. Andhadhun remake has been making strong noise. Nithiin steps into the shoes of Ayushmann Khurrana for the Telugu remake which is titled as Maestro. The first glimpse of the film is out now makes strong impact.

How disturbing when a pleasant-sounding ambience turns abrasive on a spur of a moment. Maestro first glimpse sets two different tones in no time. It begins with Nithiin showcasing his musical skills on a piano. The happy mood shifts to a thriller with Nithiin dipping face in water.

The best part is Nithiin’s facial expressions in the second sequence when he dips face in water. There is authenticity in the scene as he acts perfectly like a blind.

Mahati Swara Sagar wins brownie points for his background score. It’s an excellent variation from scene to scene. J Yuvaraj’s camera work is other positive side of the film made lavishly on Sreshth Movies banner.

The film directed by Merlapaka Gandhi and featuring Nabha Natesh and Tamannaah in female leads will grace the theatres on June 11th.

NFL rumors: 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo commitment seen as bluff by teams

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future became a lot cloudier Friday, even as the 49ers said otherwise.

The 49ers traded three first-round picks and a 2022 third-rounder to move up to No. 3 in the 2021 NFL Draft, ostensibly to draft a quarterback. The Niners insisted they had no plans to trade Garoppolo, their incumbent starting quarterback, but the rest of the NFL isn’t buying it.

“[Other] teams believe the 2014 second-rounder is available or at least will become available once the Niners stop bluffing,” The Athletic’s Jeff Howe wrote Friday. “The 49ers-Dolphins trade will lead to teams continuing to check on Garoppolo’s availability.”

Howe wrote that the New England Patriots, Garoppolo’s former team, “were planning to monitor Garoppolo’s availability” prior to Friday’s blockbuster trade. The Patriots love the quarterbacks in this year’s draft, but the 49ers’ move up the draft means that they — or another team — will have to trade up with the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4 overall to ensure they’re able to select one of draft’s top-four signal-callers. Howe wrote that drafting Alabama quarterback Mac Jones would require trading up to No. 10, and the Pats are set to pick No. 15 overall.

“If their hope was to draft a QB, the Friday trades made that journey far more difficult,” Howe wrote of the Patriots. “If their ideal scenario involved Garoppolo, that door might have cracked open a little wider.”

The Patriots re-signed Cam Newton to an incentive-laden deal worth up to $14 million, but his $5.1 million base salary means New England isn’t necessarily done under center this offseason. Links between Garoppolo and the Pats, who drafted him in 2014, existed prior to Friday, and they probably won’t slow down anytime soon.

The 49ers are on the precipice of drafting a first-round QB for the first time since picking Alex Smith No. 1 overall in 2005. Smith didn’t start right away that season, but it doesn’t seem like the 49ers’ competitors believe San Francisco’s forthcoming franchise quarterback will meet the same fate.

Pine Bluff shooting: Student has died of his wounds, police say

The teen was pronounced dead Wednesday evening, Pine Bluff police said in a prepared statement.

Monday’s shooting happened at Watson Chapel Junior High in Pine Bluff, a city of about 43,000 people located about a 45-mile drive southeast of Little Rock.

A suspect — also a 15-year-old boy who was a student there — was taken into custody Monday after being found hiding behind a house near the school, police said.

A motive wasn’t immediately known to investigators, Pine Bluff Police Chief Kelvin Sergeant said on Monday.

The suspect was being held Monday in the juvenile justice center in Pine Bluff, authorities said. Formal charges had not been filed as of Monday.

The school was to reopen for classes Thursday, following two days of virtual instruction, the school system said Wednesday.
