Macro hedge funds toast blowout year that peers are keen to forget

Hedge funds trading bonds and currencies are on track for their best year since the global financial crisis, boosted by the steep interest rate rises that have inflicted heavy losses on equity specialists and mainstream investors.

So-called macro hedge funds, made famous by the likes of George Soros and Louis Bacon, endured a barren period when markets were becalmed by trillions of dollars of central bank bond buying after 2008. But this year they have thrived thanks to seismic moves in global bond markets and a bull run in the dollar as the US Federal Reserve and other central banks battle soaring inflation.

Among the winners have been billionaire trader Chris Rokos, who recovered from losses last year to gain 45.5 per cent in 2022, helped by bets on rising interest rates, including during the UK’s market turmoil in the autumn. It leaves the Brevan Howard co-founder on track for his best year since launching his own fund, now one of the world’s biggest macro funds with about $15.5bn in assets, in 2015.

Caxton Associates chief executive Andrew Law gained 30.2 per cent to mid-December in his $4.3bn Macro fund, which is shut to new money, according to an investor. Said Haidar’s New York-based Haidar Capital has gained 194 per cent in its Jupiter fund, helped by bets on bonds and commodities, having at one stage this year been up more than 270 per cent.

“It reminds me of the early part of my career when macro funds were the dominant style of investing,” said Kenneth Tropin, chair of $19bn-in-assets Graham Capital, which he founded in 1994, referring to strong periods for macro traders in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

“They were truly hedge funds that intentionally were not correlated to people’s underlying exposure in stocks and bonds,” added Tropin.

Global stocks have dropped 20 per cent this year, while bonds have delivered their biggest declines in decades, making 2022 a year to forget for most asset managers. But hedge funds that can bet against bonds or treat currencies as an asset class have leapt ahead. Macro funds on average gained 8.2 per cent in the first 11 months of this year, according to data group HFR. That puts them on track for their best year since 2007, during the onset of the global financial crisis.

Traders profited from bets on rising yields, such as in US two-year debt, whose yield has soared from 0.7 per cent to 4.3 per cent, and the 10-year gilt, which has risen from 1 per cent to 3.6 per cent. A surprise change by the Bank of Japan to its yield curve control policy, which sent Japanese government bond yields soaring, delivered a further boost to returns.

“They have given every macro trader a lovely Christmas — even the office security guards are short Japanese government bonds I think,” quipped one macro hedge fund manager.

With the “artificial suppression of volatility” from ultra-loose monetary policy now gone, macro traders were likely to continue to profit from their economic research, said Darren Wolf, global head of investments, alternatives at Abrdn.

Computer-driven hedge funds have also benefited, with many of the market moves providing long-lasting trends. These so-called managed futures funds are up 12.6 per cent, their best year of returns since 2008.

London-based Aspect Capital, which manages about $10bn in assets, gained 39.7 per cent in its flagship Diversified fund. It profited in markets including bonds, energy and commodities, with its biggest single win coming from bets against UK gilts. Leda Braga’s Systematica gained 27 per cent in its BlueTrend fund.

“We’re in a new era where the unexpected keeps happening with alarming regularity,” said Andrew Beer, managing member at US investment firm Dynamic Beta. Jumping yields and fast-moving currencies presented opportunities for trend-following funds, he added.

The gains stand in sharp contrast to the performance of equity hedge funds, many of which have endured a miserable year as the high-growth but unprofitable technology stocks that climbed in the bull market were sent plummeting by rising interest rates.

Chase Coleman’s Tiger Global, one of the biggest winners from soaring tech stocks at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, lost 54 per cent this year. Andreas Halvorsen’s Viking, which moved out of stocks trading on very high multiples early this year, lost 3.3 per cent up to mid-December.

Meanwhile, Boston-based Whale Rock, a tech-focused fund, lost 42.7 per cent. And Skye Global, set up by former Third Point analyst Jamie Sterne, lost 40.9 per cent, hit by losses on stocks such as Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet. Sterne wrote in an investor letter seen by the Financial Times that he had been wrong about the “severity of the macro risks”.

Equity funds overall are down 9.7 per cent, putting them on track for their worst year of returns since the financial crisis of 2008, according to HFR.

“Our largest disappointment came from those managers, even well-known ones with long track records, who failed to anticipate the impact of rising rates on growth stocks,” said Cédric Vuignier, head of liquid alternative managed funds and research at SYZ Capital. “They didn’t recognise the paradigm shift and buried their heads in the sand.”

With the exception of 2020, this year has marked the biggest gap between the top and bottom deciles of hedge fund performance since the aftermath of the financial crisis in 2009, according to HFR.

“Over the last 10 years, people were rewarded for investing in hedge fund strategies correlated with [market returns],” said Graham Capital’s Tropin. “However, 2022 was the year to remind you that a hedge fund should ideally give you diversity as well.”

Donovan Mitchell speaks of ‘draining’ Utah experience, then leads Cavs in blowout of Jazz

Donovan Mitchell led the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday to a 122-99 win over the Utah Jazz team that traded him this offseason.

Prior to the game, he opened up to Andscape’s Marc J. Spears about his time in Salt Lake City and his relationship with former teammate Rudy Gobert. He told Spears in an interview published Monday that “we did a lot of special things” while acknowledging that a Jazz team led by himself and Gobert that never advanced to the Western Conference finals fell short of expectations.

“Basketball just didn’t work out,” Mitchell said of his relationship with Gobert.

Mitchell, who played five seasons in Utah, also spoke about the challenges of being a Black athlete in a predominantly white city, an experience that he says has shifted for him in Cleveland. He described his experience in Utah as “draining.”

“If I’m being honest with you, I never really said this, but it was draining,” Mitchell told Spears. “It was just draining on my energy just because you can’t sit in your room and cheer for me and then do all these different things.”

Mitchell cited an incident that saw 10-year-old Isabella Tichenor take her own life amid bullying allegations. He also referenced Utah state senator Stuart Adams, who suggested that Mitchell needed to be educated after Mitchell spoke out against a critical race theory resolution in the state legislature.

“I’m not saying specifically every fan, but I just feel like it was a lot of things. A state senator saying I need to get educated on my own Black history. Seeing Black kids getting bullied because of their skin color. Seeing a little girl hang herself because she’s being bullied.”

Mitchell called pushback against his advocacy for racial equality “a lot” and said that it was tough to not see many Black people in the stands at Jazz home games.

“And then to be able to not see many of us in the crowd, I tried my best to make sure I invite young Black and brown kids to games, to be around the community,” Mitchell continued. “But just to not see us there, it was definitely tough.

“And being in Cleveland now, you see us courtside. It’s just refreshing. It’s a blessing to be back around people that look like me.”

The change of scenery has suited Mitchell. He led the Cavs with 23 points in just 23 minutes on Monday and rested on the bench during the fourth quarter of the blowout win. He hit 4 of 5 3-pointers while shooting 8 of 12 from the field. The effort has become the norm since the trade with Mitchell averaging a career-best 29.5 points per game while shooting 50.3% from the field and 42.4% from 3-point distance. His performance is drawing MVP buzz.

Monday’s victory improved the Cavs to 21-11, including an NBA-best 15-2 at home. After the game, Mitchell kept the conversation about basketball while acknowledging that “it’s different when you’re playing against your friends, the guys you’ve been in a locker room with, battled with.”

Monday’s game was in Cleveland. He expects the Jan. 10 rematch in his return to Utah to hit differently.

“Always good to play against your guys,” Mitchell told reporters. “I think the bigger game will probably be when we go back out there.”

Also worth circling on the calendar: Jan. 14 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. It will be Mitchell’s first chance to face off against Gobert, whom the Jazz also traded in the offseason. Mitchell missed a Nov. 13 matchup in Cleveland with an ankle sprain.

“I’m going to give him a hug and be happy to see him,” Mitchell told Spears of Gobert. “And I wish him the best. There’s no hatred. There’s no ill will towards any of that.”

NFL Week 14 grades: Cowboys earn ‘C’ for unimpressive win, Tom Brady’s Buccaneers get an ‘F’ for blowout loss

USATSI

The biggest blowout of Week 14 was supposed to happen in Dallas, but instead, it happened in New York, where the Eagles throttled the Giants 48-22.

The Eagles’ point total marked the most they’ve ever scored in a road game against the Giants and the second-most they’ve ever scored overall against them. The Eagles have also now scored at least 35 points in three straight games, which is their longest streak since 2002.

In Dallas, the Cowboys were almost on the wrong end of what would have been the biggest upset of the 2022 season. The Cowboys were a 16.5-point favorite against the Texans, but someone forgot to tell a Houston team that was leading the game 23-20 with under a minute left to play.

So what kind of grade do you get for nearly pulling off an upset? Let’s get to the Week 14 grades and find out. If you’re looking for a deeper dive on the Rams wild win over the Raiders that was played Thursday, be sure to click here.

Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers spoil Tom Brady’s homecoming in blowout win over Tampa Bay Buccaneers

CNN
 —

Going from Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft to spoiling Tom Brady’s homecoming, San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy has almost seen it all following Sunday’s 35-7 blowout win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 22-year-old Purdy outdueled Brady, throwing for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Purdy also added a rushing touchdown. With his family inside Levi Stadium to witness his first start, the FOX broadcast showed Purdy’s father becoming emotional following his first touchdown pass.

Selected with the last pick of this year’s draft out of Iowa State, Purdy earned himself the nickname “Mr. Irrelevant,” but was thrust into the fray last week against the Miami Dolphins after starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot.

After the game, Purdy called it “surreal” to be playing on the same field as Brady.

“Just standing there, like ‘man that’s Tom Brady,’ talking to guys and dapping guys up and stuff,” Purdy told reporters with a huge smile on his face.

“For him to just have respect for what I did today was pretty cool, I’m not going to lie. Being a little kid, watching that guy kill it throughout all these years, win Super Bowls, and then to be able to just even give him a high five or whatever at the end, I thought that was pretty cool.”

Purdy also mentioned the importance of having his family there and their never-ending support.

“Throughout my whole life, the ups and downs of playing quarterback in general, high school and college, they’re the people at home that just believe in you and they always see the best in you. They believed in me when I was the last draft pick and all that stuff.”

Brady struggled to find his rhythm, finishing with 253 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The 45-year-old Brady complimented Purdy’s performance after the game, saying he played “really well.”

“Threw a lot of good balls,” Brady told reporters. “Hung in there in the blitz and they did a good job, they did a really good job.”

Brady, who is from San Mateo, California, also had his family on hand Sunday but added he wished the team could have done a better job.

“Love having everyone here,” Brady said. “Nice for my family to come close. I think they had a lot of people from the neighborhood come. It’s not going to change the outcome of the game, unfortunately.”

Brady requested 100 tickets for Sunday’s game for friends and family, FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews said prior to kickoff.

The 49ers improved to 9-4 with the win while the Buccaneers fell to 6-7 on the season.

San Francisco has a quick turnaround as they are scheduled to travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks on Thursday night. Tampa will host the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday.

NFL Week 11 grades: 49ers get an ‘A+’ for blowout win on Monday, Giants get a ‘D’ for ugly loss to Lions

Through the first 10 weeks of the year, the New York Giants were having a dream season, but they got hit with a harsh reality check during Sunday’s surprising loss to the Detroit Lions.

The big problems that led to the Giants’ struggles in 2021 finally reared their ugly heads for the first time in 2022. A big reason the Giants went 4-13 last season is because their running game was non-existent and because Daniel Jones was a turnover machine, and those were both problems during New York’s 31-18 loss.

Jones went eight weeks without throwing an interception, but that streak finally ended on Sunday when he got picked off by Aidan Hutchinson in the second quarter.

That was one of two interceptions that Jones would throw against the Lions. The Giants QB also threw a pick in the third quarter when a comeback was still possible.

When the Hutchinson pick happened, the Giants were leading 6-3, but that lead melted away three plays later when the Lions scored a touchdown to go up 10-6. After that, Detroit would never trail.

Saquon Barkley and the Giants running game has been incredibly successful this year, so New York hasn’t really had to rely on Jones, but with Barkley getting stopped cold on nearly every play — his longest run was four yards — the Giants were forced to turn to Jones (Barkley only totaled 22 yards on 15 carries against the Lions).

Although Jones’ numbers weren’t bad — he finished 27 of 44 for 341 yards and a TD — most of his production came in garbage time in the fourth quarter. The Giants haven’t had to worry about making any huge comebacks this year, but after falling behind 24-6 in this game, it’s worth questioning whether this offense is capable of playing from behind.

The Giants dealt with a lot of issues on Sunday — they were hit hard by injuries, their run game got shut down and they dealt few untimely penalties — so this loss wasn’t all on Jones, but considering the Giants were going up against one of the worst defenses in the NFL, you have to expect more from Jones and the offense as a whole.

Alright, let’s get to the grades for every game from Week 11. If you’re looking for a deeper dive on the Titans’ win over the Packers that was played Thursday, be sure to click here.

Bills vs. Titans score: Josh Allen, Buffalo make statement in blowout win over Tennessee in prime time

In a battle of AFC heavyweights, the Bills delivered a knockout Monday night while sending an emphatic message to the rest of the NFL. In posting an 41-7 victory over the visiting Titans, the Bills moved to 2-0 while strengthening their case as the conference’s top team.

It was a dominant performance for the Bills in all three phases. The headliner was quarterback Josh Allen, who threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters of work. He had a field day throwing the ball to wideout Stefon Diggs, who caught 12 passes for 148 yards and three scores. Buffalo’s offense was complemented by a defense that shut down Titans star running back Derrick Henry, who finished the night with 25 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries.

The game started competitively enough, as both teams scored touchdowns on their opening drives. But the Bills took over the game after that, scoring 10 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 17-7 halftime lead. The Bills ended the competitive phase of the game by scoring 24 unanswered points in the third quarter. Of those points, 17 were the result of three forced turnovers that included Matt Milano’s 43-yard pick-six of Ryan Tannehill, who was relieved by rookie Malik Willis after throwing his second pick of the quarter.

The win allowed the Bills to keep pace with the Dolphins atop the AFC East. At 0-2, Tennessee is in good company, as it is one of three winless teams currently residing in the AFC South.

Why the Bills won

Everything went right for the Bills on Monday night, which truly is the headline. Buffalo showed in Week 1 vs. the Los Angeles Rams that it deserves to be the odds-on favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy come February, and the Bills just built on their case in Week 2. Allen completed 26 of 38 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns, while Diggs caught 12 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

The defense allowed just 182 total Titans yards compared to the Bills’ 414, and Buffalo won the turnover battle 4-0. The Bills won in every facet of the game in Week 2. It’s just that simple.

Why the Titans lost

I think a better question is what went right for the Titans as opposed to what went wrong on Monday night. Tannehill completed 11 of 20 passes for 117 yards and two interceptions, Derrick Henry rushed for just 25 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries and the defense got blown past consistently. I think that third item is what really stood out in this loss, however.

One weakness that was clearly exploited by Buffalo was Tennessee’s secondary. The Titans’ No. 1 cornerback in Kristian Fulton was ruled out on Saturday due to a hamstring injury, and without him, this unit is young and very inexperienced. Former first-round pick Caleb Farley was playing in his fifth career game, and then Roger McCreary and Tre Avery are rookies. All three struggled to stop this explosive offense, especially Farley. It’s tough anytime Jake Kumerow cooks you for a 39-yard gain. There were several big plays given up just like that one, as Diggs caught a 46-yard bomb and Isaiah McKenzie caught a 28-yard pass. Allen had a great statline of course, but I’m honestly surprised he didn’t take more shots downfield.

The Titans secondary wasn’t elite last year either, but the front seven made them look good on occasion. With Harold Landry out this season due to a torn ACL, Bud Dupree leaving early Monday night with a hip injury and Ola Adeniyi banged-up as well, the Titans’ defensive line struggled to get pressure on Allen —  leaving the young cornerbacks to their own devices.

Turning point

In the third quarter, the Titans finally forced the Bills’ first punt of the season. Sam Martin booted it away, and Titans rookie wideout Kyle Phillips muffed it — his second muffed punt of the season.

The UCLA product has huge potential as a slot receiver, but you have to wonder if Mike Vrabel is going to leave him back there fielding punts moving forward.

Play of the game

The Bills offense and all the points they put up were the headline from this matchup, but the defense played well too! They forced a whopping four turnovers — which included this impressive interception from the veteran Jordan Poyer.

What’s next

The Titans return to Nashville next Sunday to host the 0-2 Las Vegas Raiders. As for the Bills, they hit the road to take on the undefeated Miami Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who is coming off of an impressive, 469-yard, six-touchdown performance.

New World Brimstone Sands Update Info Blowout and Dev Q&A

We recently joined Amazon Games for a press briefing event dedicated to New World’s biggest update to date, titled Brimstone Sands, due in October on live servers.

This is the desert-like map that was first discovered through datamining a few months ago. According to the developers, it’ll be at least three times as big as any other zone, and it was inspired by ancient Egypt and Rome.

Here’s an overview from Amazon:

Death hovers over the scorched wastes of Brimstone Sands, its thirst still unsatisfied even after centuries of strife and war. Here, the ancient Egyptians first encountered the godlike Ancients and built monuments and vast cities that were part of a flourishing civilization thousands of years in the past. Their civilization is now long fallen to ruin, and few of those original inhabitants remain except for the mysterious sorcerer Imhotep, with whom players must work with to solve the desert’s mysteries.

The most immediate threat in Brimstone Sands is posed by the deranged remnants of the Roman Empire’s 19th Legion, who came here from Alexandria with Mark Antony and a dying Queen Cleopatra. What exactly befell the Romans must be discovered, but they have fallen to Corruption and now besiege the ancient ruins of a mysterious Pyramid known as Ahket. They are certain that within, they will find the secret to their redemption and the long-awaited resurgence of the Roman Empire.

Players must challenge the Corrupted Legion head-on and delve into Ancient Ruins where they will face vigilant Anubian Guardians and solve hieroglyphic puzzles to achieve new power. Ultimately, they discover a new threat emerging from the sands, a dark plot engineered by their former ally, the Huntress Adiana, and the Angry Earth. It will take everything they have to face her minions and ultimately delve into the heart of Ahket to the mysterious Ennead—our newest expedition.

When the sands settle, players will have explored ancient mysteries with Imhotep, defeated powerful Sand demons, and perhaps, if they persist, restored the rightful ruler who can finally bring order and hope to the region after centuries of chaos.

That’s just part of the large Brimstone Sands update, including the Greatsword. This brand new two-handed weapon lets users switch stances depending on the battlefield’s situation. The Greatsword scales with both Strength and Dexterity, providing players with flexibility when matching it with another weapon.

Moreover, Amazon is revamping the new player experience. The quest flow has been optimized; new quest dynamics have been introduced to improve questing variety; new characters, enemies, and challenges have been added to various zones, and some town buildings even received aesthetic improvements.

After the brief presentation, we participated in a group Q&A with key developers from Amazon Games on the Brimstone Sands update and beyond.

Any plans to officially support controllers in New World?

No plans right now. We’re looking at supporting them in the future.

Will there be any support for existing players to experience the new stories through additional character slots?

We’re looking at that, absolutely. There will be a character slot added. It will be on a different server, though, because of PvP.

What’s being done to improve endgame replayability and variety in New World?

We have the brand new Expedition that’s coming out, bringing new loot with it. We also have two additional endgame group elite Points of Interest, and there’s additional PoIs on top of that that are smaller. There are around four elite Points of Interest. These are places you can explore and have fun while you’re trying to get your Gear Score up.

We will be adding the use of a special. It’s not an ultimate like in other games, this is going to be an ability tied to the player. You’ll find runes in the world, giving you a special ability that you can fire off on a periodic basis as a support to your other abilities.

Five special abilities will be dropped from the bosses in our five endgame Expeditions. In addition, we did a pass on named items in our loot table, so Tier 2 to Tier IV have been audited to ensure they’re pretty powerful for their level. These should be really good drops for players that are leveling. Tier V also had an attributes audit to make sure that they are appropriate for the weapons. For example, if you get a Life Staff, it’ll give you +Focus instead of something else it’s not related to. Tier V will also drop at 590 or higher Gear Score based on your Expertise.

What was it like designing the Brimstone Sands zone?

We looked at historical figures. If they were to come to Aeternum, what would they do? You can see our interpretations of what happens when these cultures meet in Aeternum.

We also wanted the desert to be vast. Brimstone Sands is nearly three times bigger than any other zone in New World. It also has more travel points than any other zone.

Are there any plans for larger Expeditions, that is to say, Raid-like dungeons with more players?

That is something we are exploring. Nothing that we can announce right now, but we definitely are hearing people.

The Brimstone Sands also adds the Greatsword weapon. How does it work?

There are two ability trees: Onslaught and Defiance. With the Onslaught tree, you deal more damage but also receive more damage, making it more of a risk versus reward management thing. We also allow players to speed up their heavy attacks at the cost of more stamina. It’s pretty aggressive when it comes to usage.

The Defiance tree is about absorbing damage but not dealing out as much, though it’s really good when you’re facing a lot of enemies as there’s a counterattack where you deal more damage depending on how much you take. Certain traits in there also draw aggro, so we’re interested in seeing builds where you can be an off-tank or even a full tank using that tree specifically.

Will there be a faction conquest reset with the Brimstone Sands update?

Not right now, we’re looking at ways to do that in the future.

Is anything coming for Companies such as housing, activities…?

Nothing that we’re ready to announce, but it’s something we’re starting to think about more earnestly and plan for. I would expect to see some stuff show up next year, but I can’t commit to any dates yet.

Will there be more Outpost Rush maps based on the Brimstone Sands theme?

No plans for it. But we are looking at ways to improve Outpost Rush as we know it’s one of the most popular modes in New World. We want to improve on it before we start adding other maps.

Are there any plans to make Arenas, Expeditions, or Battlegrounds cross-server?

It’s going to take some time, it’s not technically easy. When we do it, we want to make sure we get it right. It’s something we’re definitely looking at, though.

Are you considering server merges or increased player caps on servers?

Right now, we’re not looking at merging more servers. We might add a few more, actually. As for the player cap, it’s something we’re also looking at. I think you’ll see an increase either in October or before the end of the year.

Will there be more opportunities to engage in open world PvP with Brimstone Sands?

Currently, we’re looking at territory control mechanics and how those influence open world PvP. It’s something that the team is deeply exploring, so we want there to be rewards for doing open world PvP combat.

Is there a cadence planned for releasing new Expeditions in the future? Also, will there be endgame versions of the lower level Expeditions at some point?

We love Expeditions, so we think the more we add to the game, the better. We’re thinking quarterly, it feels like a good cadence. We’re absolutely thinking of the earlier Expeditions and finding ways to bring them into the Mutation system.

Will there be any celebrations for the first anniversary?

There’s a couple of things we want to do, yes!

Looking further ahead, will there be level cap increases and/or full-on expansions?

I don’t want to go into expansions or anything like that, but it’s a safe bet that there will be a level cap increase at some point. We’re committed to continuing to work with players and making New World the best game it can be. Part of that is pushing the endgame even further and adding more things to do.

What about updates to housing?

Nothing that we can expand upon right now. There will obviously be new houses in the Brimstone Sands zone. As for other locations, we don’t know exactly when that will happen.

The presentation mentioned new activities and events coming with the update. Can you talk about those?

We call them roadside encounters. A lot of time on your path, you might look at different groups of enemies, depending on the time in the world. You might have seen some dust clouds, some rumblings in the video. There’s some things that will show up in the desert that you might now expect.

We also put in 26 Glyphs all around Brimstone Stands. These allow you to enter secret passages, unlock elite chests, continue portions of the story, et cetera.

Do you have any more seasonal events scheduled?

We have major events in Summer and Winter, but also some minor ones. In the future we might expand that, but there should be an expectation that we are celebrating holiday events.

Will Brimstone Sands be neutral ground or not?

No, it will be fought over and conquered by player factions.

Are there going to be any changes to other weapons due to the Greatsword?

There will always be balance changes, but not because of the Greatsword itself.

Thank you for your time.
