Why does mystery blonde keep popping up in Putin photo ops?
A female “soldier” honored by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his New Year’s message has popped up in photos with the leader before — as an ice-cream vendor, an angler and a Christmastime parishioner.
The blonde, who was clad in fatigues and feted with other reputed soldiers in the dictator’s holiday broadcast, is a regular fixture at Putin’s public appearances, Sibir.Realii, a media outlet tied to Radio Liberty, reported on the messaging app Telegram.
“In September 2016, the president was photographed on a lake in the Novgorod region with fishermen – she was among them,” Sibir.Realii posted.
She was identified as Larisa Sergukhina at the time.
The woman also was among the group of parishioners around Putin in 2017 at an Eastern Orthodox Christmas service in a Novgorod monastery and referred to as Sergukhina, the outlet said.
At least two of the “anglers” previously with the woman were also depicted as “parishioners” at the service, photos show — leading some observers to speculate they are all actors used for cringe-worthy staged photo ops with Putin or else a poor attempt to disguise his security detail.
The woman was also seen on two other occasions — in 2017 and 2019 — “selling” ice cream to Putin at a Moscow air show.
As the British tabloid The Sun reported in 2019, Putin overpaid for his ice cream by more than 4,000 rubles — roughly $60 — and told the blonde to give the change to the air minister for the “development of aviation.”
At the time, Kremlin watchers opined that the woman was likely a member of Putin’s protective service, working under cover to help the Russian president appear to be mingling with average Russians.
At this year’s New Year’s broadcast, the woman was identified as a Russian army medic, Anna Sidorenko. She stood behind Putin with her supposed comrades in combat fatigues during a message about the war in Ukraine.
In the speech, Putin vowed to defend Russia’s “historical territory” — a reference to his assertion that Ukraine is not an independent nation.
Putin also blamed the war on Ukraine’s Western allies.
“The West lied about peace,” he said. “It was preparing for aggression. … And now they are cynically using Ukraine and its people to weaken and split Russia.”
Putin has regularly pushed the theory that NATO and the European Union sought to threaten Russia by supporting Ukrainian moves to join the European community.
Despite a year of unexpected failures by Russian troops — and a bloody stalemate along the front lines in eastern Ukraine — Putin’s predictions were optimistic.
“Together, we will overcome all difficulties and preserve our country’s greatness and independence,” he said.
“We will triumph, for our families and for Russia.”

‘Blonde’ director responds to backlash over Marilyn Monroe film
Andrew Dominik, the director of the controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, is speaking out about the backlash against the Netflix film.
During an appearance at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, Dominik proclaimed that American audiences “hated the movie,” which starred Ana de Armas as the iconic movie star. The Australian director claimed this was because the public strictly wanted to see Monroe appear “empowered” on screen.
“Now we’re living in a time where it’s important to present women as empowered, and they want to reinvent Marilyn Monroe as an empowered woman. That’s what they want to see,” Dominik said of the beloved movie star, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “And if you’re not showing them that, it upsets them.”
Dominik went on to say that those who criticized the film, based on Joyce Carol Oates’s 2000 novel of the same name, must have felt it exploited their memories of the actress, who died of a drug overdose at age 36 in 1962.
“Which is kind of strange, because she’s dead. The movie doesn’t make any difference in one way or another,” Dominik said. “What they really mean is that the film exploited their memory of her, their image of her, which is fair enough. But that’s the whole idea of the movie. It’s trying to take the iconography of her life and put it into service of something else, it’s trying to take things that you’re familiar with, and turning the meaning inside out. But that’s what they don’t want to see.”
Despite the negative feedback, Dominik clarified that he was actually “really pleased” the film had “outraged so many people,” because he considers it the responsibility of the artist to evoke passionate responses from their work. He chalked that up to coming of age in the 1980s, when to “offend your audience was a solemn duty, to wrench them out of a complacency about things.”
Dominik, who claimed “tens of millions of people” watched the film on Netflix, concluded by stating that he believes American film is getting “more conservative.” He compared the current state of cinema to bedtime stories, explaining that people want a story with a predictable ending.
“I don’t want to make bedtime stories,” he concluded.
Blonde has drummed up significant controversy over its NC-17 rating and its handling of rape, abortion and miscarriage. Back in October, model and author Emily Ratajkowski called out the film in a TikTok post, saying it was responsible for “fetishizing female pain,” Yahoo Entertainment previously reported.
“So I’ve been hearing a lot about this Marilyn Monroe movie, Blonde, which I haven’t seen yet, but I’m not surprised to hear it’s yet another movie fetishizing female pain, even in death,” Ratajkowski explained to the camera. “We love to fetishize female pain. Look at Amy Winehouse. Look at Britney Spears. Look at the way we obsess over [Princess] Diana’s death. Look at the way we obsess over dead girls and serial killers. Watch any CSI episode, and it’s this crazy fetishization of female pain and death.”

Netflix users are being left particulary outraged by a “horrifying” scene in new Marilyn Monroe film Blonde.
The controversial new movie from director Andrew Dominik was adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’s fictional book about Monroe, which was released in 2001.
For some time now, the project, which stars Knives Out actor Ana de Armas, has been hyped up as being a shocking watch, with the film being handed an NC-17 age certificate in the US.
For those in the UK, this is similar to an 18 – but American directors tend to try and edit their films in order to avoid the certificate as, when cinema releases are concerned, it typically equates to less money at the box office.
Many may believe Blonde to be a standard biopic about Monroe, but the opposite is true: due to the source material, the film features several imagined scenes from the Hollywood star’s life, one of which is being accused of going too far.
It concerns John F Kennedy, the US president whom Monroe is believed to have had an affair with in the 1960s. Rumours of this affair remains unverified to this day – but Blonde goes one further.
In a scene near the end of the film, Monroe is shown to be drugged and taken to a character named “the president” who bears a striking resemblance to JFK (the actor, Caspar Phillipson, previously played him in Jackie).
Here, while he is on the phone refuting claims of sexual assault, he forces Monroe into performing a sex act on him, while a voiceover by de Armas shows Marilyn attempting to disassociate from the situation.
Some viewers who are not aware of the source material appear to believe this actually happened, despite there being no record of any such incident.
This is one of the reasons why the scene’s placement is being questioned, with many calling it “character assassination”. Others are calling it “exploitation” of Monroe’s story.
‘Blonde’ viewers are saying the a scene involing JFK goes too far

“I don’t know if this has been validated or not?” one viewer asked, adding: “It’s a big leap to lie about it though.”
“Why would the film #Blonde fabricate a graphic rape of #MarilynMonroe by #JFK? “ another viewer waded in, calling the scene “disgusting exploitation” of the Hollywood star’s life.
Others said the scene “should never have made it” into the film and agreed that it is probably what led to the film’s dreaded age certificate.
“I’m wondering why it’s NC-17 then comes the JFK scene for the most degrading depiction of Marilyn Monroe,” a viewer commented.
In general, Netflix users have been complaining about Blonde, with many saying they were forced to switch the film off after just 20 minutes.
In a one-star review for The Independent, Jessie Thompson wrote: “Blonde is not a bad film because it is degrading, exploitative and misogynist, even though it is all of those things. It’s bad because it’s boring, pleased with itself and doesn’t have a clue what it’s trying to say.”

Blonde viewers call out the ‘appalling’ talking foetus scene for pushing an ‘anti-abortion agenda’
Planned Parenthood have criticised Netflix movie Blonde as “anti-abortion propaganda”.
The 18-rated film, based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, features many imagined scenes from the star’s life. It has attracted huge controversy since it was released on the streaming giant earlier this week.
Blonde is not a standard biopic, and people have criticised the film as “traumatic” viewing, arguing it is “exploitative” of Monroe, highlighting in particular the multiple scenes of sexual assault that occur throughout.
Many people have also singled out the movie’s treatment of abortion. Blonde depicts Monroe as having had two illegal abortions against her will.
In one scene that has been shared and criticised widely on social media, CGI is used to portray Monroe’s foetuses, which look like fully formed babies, speaking to her.
“You won’t hurt me this time, will you?” a foetus asks Monroe.
Planned Parenthood are among the organisations and viewers to accuse the film of having an “anti-abortion” tone.
Caren Spruch, Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s national director of arts and entertainment engagement, told The Hollywood Reporter: “As film and TV shapes many people’s understanding of sexual and reproductive health, it’s critical these depictions accurately portray women’s real decisions and experiences.
“While abortion is safe, essential healthcare, anti-abortion zealots have long contributed to abortion stigma by using medically inaccurate descriptions of foetuses and pregnancy. Andrew Dominik’s new film, Blonde, bolsters their message with a CGI-talking foetus, depicted to look like a fully formed baby.”

Spruch continued to say that while Planned Parenthood “respects artistic license and freedom”, these “false images only serve to reinforce misinformation and perpetuate stigma around sexual and reproductive health care”.
She continued: “Every pregnancy outcome – especially abortion – should be portrayed sensitively, authentically and accurately in the media. We still have much work to do to ensure that everyone who has an abortion can see themselves onscreen.
“It is a shame that the creators of Blonde chose to contribute to anti-abortion propaganda and stigmatise people’s healthcare decisions instead.”
Viewers at home have similarly condemned the film’s abortion scenes.
“Blonde is basically a three-hour anti-abortion ad disguised as a Marilyn Monroe biopic,” wrote one.

Another added that it gave them a “slight anti-abortion tone (they had a talking foetus commiserating with Marilyn and they over-glorified it”.
Someone else called it a “baffling piece of bad faith, anti-abortion nonsense”.
In an interview with The Wrap, director Dominik defended Blonde against the criticism, claiming that the scrutiny has arisen because the film was released so soon after the overturning of Roe v Wade.
“People are obviously concerned with losses of freedoms,” he said. “But, I mean, no one would have given a s*** about that if I’d made the movie in 2008, and probably no one’s going to care about it in four years’ time. And the movie won’t have changed. It’s just what’s sort of going on.”
The Independent has contacted a representative of Netflix for comment.
Oates, who wrote the 1999 book on which the film is based, has defended Dominik against criticism, calling his screenplay “remarkably feminist”.
As well as the abortion scenes, one other moment in the film to cause controversy involves Marilyn performing a sex act on a character closely resembling JFK (the actor, Caspar Phillipson, also previously played the president in Jackie).
Many viewers have complained that the film is “unwatchable”, stating on social media that they were unable to make it more than 20 minutes into Blonde before abandoning it.
Planned Parenthood blasts Blonde as “anti-abortion propaganda”
Planned Parenthood has joined the chorus of voices with nothing much positive to say about Netflix’s new Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, giving an interview today that blasts the film as “anti-abortion propaganda.”
This is per THR, which reached out to the reproductive rights organization for comment on Andrew Dominik’s new film, which stars Ana De Armas as a version of the legendary Hollywood star, and which depicts two illegal abortions as part of the web of trauma that led to Monroe’s death. (Including CGI talking fetuses that say things like, “You won’t hurt me this time, will you?”)
In response, Caren Spruch, Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s national director of arts and entertainment engagement, told THR that, “As film and TV shapes many people’s understanding of sexual and reproductive health, it’s critical these depictions accurately portray women’s real decisions and experiences. While abortion is safe, essential health care, anti-abortion zealots have long contributed to abortion stigma by using medically inaccurate descriptions of fetuses and pregnancy. Dominik has come under fire both for the content of the film itself—based on the book by Joyce Carol Oates—and for the press he’s given around it, in which he’s suggested a sort of baseline contempt for Monroe’s various films. Addressing the abortion issue in a recent interview with The Wrap, he suggested that the film is not anti-choice, and that unhappiness at its depiction of abortion was rooted in the Supreme Court’s recent overturn of Roe v. Wade. “No one would have given a shit about that if I’d made the movie in 2008, and probably no one’s going to care about it in four years’ time.”
