Kylie Jenner showcases killer curves in a sheer black gown during the 2022 Baby2Baby Gala

Kylie Jenner exuded elegance as she stepped onto the red carpet on Saturday evening’s during the 2022 Baby2Baby Gala in Los Angeles, California.

The makeup mogul, 25, attended the annual soiree in support of her older half-sister Kim Kardashian, who is this year’s Giving Tree Award recipient.

Jenner, who welcomed her second child earlier this year, teased her fit form beneath a stunning black off-the-shoulder gown with a flirty sheer skirt.

It had slit up one leg and a modest train that trailed behind the star as she posed on the event’s step-and-repeat ahead of the festivities.

Jenner styled her dress with strappy black heels and a dramatic claw-like manicure.

The Kylie Cosmetics CEO’s raven hair was swept back in a bun with several of her baby hairs left out to create a softer silhouette.

Instead of her traditional full glam, Jenner let her natural beauty shine by just coating her lashes with mascara and drenching her lips in a rosy nude lip gloss.

The mother-of-two posed up a storm for shutterbugs before getting in some shots with her glammed-up sister Kim.

The 42-year-old socialite flaunted her hourglass frame in a silky pink mermaid-style gown with a dramatic train.

Kim, who has four children with her scandal-struck ex-husband Kanye West, is this year’s honoree at the star-studded bash presented by Paul Mitchell.

Mindy Kaling has been enlisted to host the festivities, where father of one Tyler Perry will take the age to present Kim with her prize.

Previous honorees for their philanthropy toward children include Chrissy Teigen, as well as Gwyneth Paltrow, Kerry Washington, Amy Adams and Jennifer Garner.

Kobe Bryant’s widow Vanessa, who tragically lost her 13-year-old daughter Gianna in the helicopter crash that killed her husband, received last year’s Giving Tree Award.

Its board of directors includes but is not limited to a number of famous figures like Nicole Richie, Jessica Alba, Rachel Zoe, Kelly Rowland and Julie Bowen.

Emma Grede, who helped co-found Good American with Kim’s sister Khloe Kardashian, is also one of the members of the board.

Emily Ratajkowski Steps Out In A Black Micro-Mini And Matching Thigh-High Boots–The Post-Divorce Glow Is Real!

Leave it to Emily Ratajkowski to show us all how to dress for revenge. The 31-year-old model, actress, author, and podcaster stepped out on Halloween in NYC wearing a look better than even the hottest costume.

When we saw the black micro-mini and matching thigh-high boots she wore, our jaws dropped to the floor.

Hot girl summer is making way for femme fatale fall and we’re here for it. EmRata absolutely knocked it out of the park in this all-black fit. The brunette babe stepped out in New York City wearing a black turtleneck and matching micro-mini skirt with a pair of thigh-high Khaite leather boots.

She accessorized with a belt to highlight her tiny waist, a pair of large hoop earrings, a black crossbody bag, and, of course—her phone. Emily kept her chocolate brown hair down, and her makeup simple except for a bright red lip. Emily is definitely giving us inspo for the dropping temperature. This is the perfect ensemble to wear with tights as it gets colder, and under a big cozy coat.

Post-Divorce glow

Emily hasn’t been letting her heartbreak get her down, even encouraging single guys to slide into her DMs. The supermodel has been busier than ever—and looking hotter than ever while showing her ex, Sebastian Bear-McClard what he’s missing.

One of our fave post-divorce looks of late was EmRata’s red hot fit at the Kerastase Pop Party photocall in Paris. The Inamorata creator dressed to impress showing off her legs-for-days in a plunging red minidress and a matching pair of red satin heels. And another look we’re still obsessed with her rendition of the low-rise skirt trend.

LIVE Best Buy Black Friday deals — $200 off MacBook Pro M2, OLED TVs from $569

Refresh

There are a lot of laptops under $100 right now. While  most of them tend to be Chromebooks, we’ve spotted one for Windows fans. Best Buy currently has the Lenovo IdeaPad 1i on sale for just $99 ($150 off). It features a 14-inch 1366 x 768 LCD, Celeron N4020 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB eMMC. It’s not going to break any speed records with this hardware, but it’s a great budget machine for kids or as your secondary machine.

There are a lot of cheap coffee makers on sale right now. But if you want one that’s reliable, we’re big fans of the Keurig K Latte. While we haven’t tested this model ourselves, the K Latte is a companion device to the Keurig K-Cafe, which is our pick for the best Keurig coffee maker. The K Latte is a single-serve coffee and latte maker that lets you brew 6-, 8-, or 10-ounce cups of coffee, tea, or cocoa. It also lets you make lattes in three easy steps. It’s a solid no-fuss machine that’s now on sale at its lowest price ever.

Easily one of the best Black Friday TV deals of the year, right now you can get the LG A2 48-inch OLED TV for just $569 on Best Buy. This is $730 off the original price and is the lowest price we’ve seen for an OLED TV ever.

While not the largest set, this LG A2 OLED gives you over billion colors and perfect blacks for a very aggressive price along with AI 4K upscaling. You also get Dolby Vision IQ and Dolby Atmos support, plus LG’s silky smooth webOS platform for easily finding stuff to watch.

Granted, you don’t get HDMI 2.1 support and the refresh rate is only 60Hz, but overall this is a killer early Black Friday deal.

The MacBook Pro M2 is here, and Apple’s premium laptop seeing its first discounts now that it’s Black Friday. This is an incredibly powerful laptop, and it has great battery life and a beautiful display to boot. If you’re regularly editing photos and rendering 4K video, the MacBook Pro M2 can’t be beat.

There are some downsides, though. The 720p webcam feels dated, and there are only two Thunderbolt/USB4 ports on the device. There is a headphone jack included, at least.

Looking for an affordable TV? This is about as cheap as 4K TV sets get, so this is a perfect Black Friday deal.

Even though it’s cheap, the Insignia F30 series is no slouch: it comes with DTS Studio Sound and support for Alexa voice controls. The visuals and sound quality are also great for the price.

If you shop at Best Buy, you’ll get some freebies with your TV, too: a 30-day FuboTV membership, 3 months of Apple TV+, and 4 months of Amazon Music Unlimited. The FuboTV and Amazon Music Unlimited trials are for new subscribers only, while the Apple TV+ trial is for new and returning subscribers.

We’ve seen a lot of Surface Pro 8 deals in the past, but never have we seen one this good. Right now Best Buy has the Surface Pro 8 bundled with the Signature Keyboard for $899. The keyboard normally costs $179 on its own, so you’re getting a generous $450 discount. We named the Surface Pro 8 one of the best 2-in-1 laptops, and perfect for everyday use. In our Microsoft Surface Pro 8 review, we loved the device’s beautiful, sharp display. We also like how its speakers are cleverly hidden behind the top bezel and bonus points for delivering solid audio.

We’ll start off our liveblog by sharing our best streaming device. The excellent Roku Streaming Stick 4K has hit its lowest price ever, and it’s the perfect time to pick one up if you haven’t already.

If you’re not shopping for a new TV this Black Friday, but want to give your current one an upgrade, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K is exactly what you’re looking for. You’ll be able to stream live TV, as well as content from all the best streaming apps like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney Plus. And all of it will be in 4K HDR with Dolby Vision.

Best of all, if you’re visiting family for the holidays, just throw your Roku Streaming Stick 4K in your bag and you won’t miss out on any of your favorite shows while you’re away from home.

Best Early Black Friday Deals on Apple TV 4K, AirPods, iPad, MagSafe, More

Although we’re still two weeks out from Black Friday on November 25, we’ve begun seeing many solid deals arrive on Apple products, like the early Black Friday discounts we shared on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. In this post, we’re focusing less on a specific device and more on Apple in general, with early holiday discounts hitting Apple TV 4K, iPad, AirPods Pro, MagSafe accessories, and more.

Note: MacRumors is an affiliate partner with some of these vendors. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may receive a small payment, which helps us keep the site running.

Shoppers should note that although many of the deals shared below are current record low prices, there is no guarantee we won’t see steeper discounts later in the month or in December. Apple product sales fluctuate often during the holidays, so the best you can do is strike while the iron is hot during these best-ever price events.

Apple TV 4K (2021)

The 2021 Apple TV 4K has seen steep discounts since the summer, and prices have only been dropping even more following the announcement of the new 2022 Apple TV 4K models. Right now on Amazon you can get the 32GB 2021 Apple TV 4K for $99.99, which is an $79 discount and an all-time low price.

Apple TV 4K (2022)

If you want the latest Apple TV 4K model, you won’t be able to save as much money, but Amazon does still have a small deal. You can get the 64GB 2022 Apple TV 4K for $124.99, down from $129.00. The 128GB 2022 Apple TV 4K model is also available at a slight discount.

MagSafe Battery Pack

Amazon has a new record low price on the MagSafe Battery Pack, available for $71.00, down from $99.00. This accessory rarely sees discounts, so now is a great time to snag the battery pack at its best-ever price.

MagSafe Duo Charger

Another MagSafe accessory, the MagSafe Duo Charger, is down to $103.00 right now on Amazon, from its original price of $129.00. This is the first time we’ve tracked a deal on the MagSafe Duo Charger in more than a month.

AirPods Pro 2

Apple just launched the second-generation AirPods Pro, and Amazon has had the headphones at a $15 discount for a few weeks now. This is a second-best price, but still a solid markdown on the brand-new accessory.

10.9-Inch iPad (2022)

B&H Photo has the first major discount on the just-released 10.9-inch iPad, available for $399.00 (64GB Wi-Fi), down from $449.00. As of writing, only B&H Photo has this deal, and only in the Blue color.

11-Inch iPad Pro (2022)

Amazon has the first notable discount on the brand new iPad Pro lineup, with $50 savings on the 128GB Wi-Fi 11-inch iPad Pro. As of today, this remains the only new iPad Pro with a deal, and B&H Photo is matching Amazon’s price.

iPad Mini 6

You can get Apple’s 64GB Wi-Fi iPad mini 6 for its all-time low price of $399.99 right now on Amazon, which is a $99 discount on the 2021 tablet. This remains the best deal we’ve ever seen on the iPad mini 6, and only Amazon has the sale right now.

Studio Display

For Apple’s display products, we’re tracking best-ever prices on the Studio Display with standard glass at Amazon and B&H Photo. It’s on sale for $1,499.00, which is $100 off its original price. The nano-texture glass option is also $100 off on B&H Photo.

Pro Display XDR

Apple’s high-end Pro Display XDR with nano-texture glass has dropped to $5,499.00 on Amazon and B&H Photo, down from $5,999.00. This is a match of the all-time low price on this display.

We’re keeping track of all of the season’s best Apple-related deals in our Black Friday roundup, so be sure to check back throughout the month for an updated list of all the most notable discounts you’ll find for Black Friday 2022.

15 best early Amazon Black Friday deals: Cheapest 4K Chromecast ever, $500 off OLED TV and more

Amazon’s Black Friday deals are starting to gather pace, with discounts to be had on TVs, laptops, fitness equipment, home gear and more. In fact, there’s almost too much to keep track of.

So I’ve narrowed down the top 15 deals that have caught my eye. High on the list of new sales is Amazon’s new 65-inch Omni QLED 4K Fire TV, which only came out last month but has been sliced to $599; that’s a good price for the first QLED TV in Amazon’s Omni Fire TV lineup.

Other attention-grabbing discounts that have my attention include the a big sale on Bowflex adjustable dumbbells and up top 50% off select Anova Sous Vide precision cookers. Amazon has been offering good preview deals so far, but in my opinion they’ve yet to offer that killer deal that no other retailer matches. That said, the latest batch of deals is definitely ramping things up.

One thing worth noting is that Amazon is relying on third-party merchants a lot when it runs out of stock on select devices. That’s not a major issue, but in a few instances we’ve seen third-party merchants offering used/renewed items instead of new items. While the product page usually displays when an item is used, the print can be small, so be alert of your merchant when hitting that buy button.

Below you’ll find the best Amazon Black Friday deals I’ve seen today.

Amazon Black Friday deals at a glance

  • Air fryers: Ninja, Cuisinart deals from $33 (opens in new tab)
  • Chromebooks: HP, Lenovo, Acer up to 45% off (opens in new tab)

Roborock is one of the most reliable robot vacuum brands on the market as its devices offer powerful suction as well as plenty of conveniences. You can currently get $220 off the Roborock Q7 Max+ by clicking the coupon button before checkout ahead of Black Friday.

Use your iPhone to set cleaning times, place no-go zones, change suction power, or check on where the vacuum currently is cleaning. It cleans by going back and forth in rows and leaves perfect vacuum lines. Then when it’s done, it returns to the dock and empties the dustbin’s contents into the charging dock. That way, you only have to empty the dock every few weeks instead of every day.

Do you prefer a mechanical keyboard? this Logitech option may have gaming in the title, but it will do great for anyone looking for a more comfortable keyboard feel. The numpad here will be useful for anyone looking to be more productive too, providing numbers at a fingers distance without needing to stretch to the num row. There are flashing gamer lights all over it, but those can be turned off for a less ‘in your face’ experience.

This one also has a nice $80 discount, so you’ll save some money while you’re it.

It’s another sound bar for your Apple TV 4K, and this time it’s from Sony. This one is a little cheaper with $100 off full price, setting you back now $198. It’s a 2.1channel bar, so it’s equipped with a center channel, left and right channels, and a subwoofer for those lower frequencies. It’s got everything you need in a sound system.

One cool thing this one features is a Bluetooth connection so that you can hook up your phone and listen to some music too.

iPad Pro M2 for $50 off? Don’t mind if we do. The smaller of the two pro models is now $50 off at Amazon, making it $749. For an iPad that’s only been around for a few weeks, that really not bad at all. For the money, you’ll get an 11-inch screen, an M2 chip, and some seriously cool camera kit on the back.

This is the tablet’s lowest price – and it might not stick around for long.

One for the Prime members this time – a mesh network system from Amazon. If you’ve got a Prime account you can get yourself an eero Pro mesh system for $280 off full price – so its $419 now. A mesh system is perhaps one of the most efficient ways of spreading a WiFi signal throughout your house, even if you’ve got thick walls.

No, it may not be as fast or solid a connection as an ethernet cable, but if you can drill holes all through your house then this is a perfect alternative.

(Image credit: Gerald Lynch / iMore)

This is a saving of over $150 on the MacBook Air M2 – that’s its lowest price ever again, only this time it’s at Best Buy. What do you get over the previous model? A bigger screen with less bezel, as well as a notch. It’s also slightly thicker with its new design, and its keyboard is clickier with more feedback.

You’ll need to scroll down the page here a little to find the deal, but there will also be loads of other great deals on MacBooks too – not just the Air!

So you were on the bus this morning and you just couldn’t hear yourself think over the noise of the engine or someone’s kid shouting to go to the local toyshop – not what you want before work’s even started. That’s where a pair of noise-canceling headphones come in clutch – you’ll be able to drown out toyshop kid with not only your music but specific frequencies that have been specifically designed to block out noise. This pair of Sennheiser cans will sound fab too, with Sennheiser’s classic sound profile.

At the moment, you’ll save $105 on this pair of headphones – they’re available in black and white, so there’s a color for everyone here.

OLED TVs have the most authentic black, making The LG C2 OLED one of the best TVs for watching HDR content. Movies will pop with vibrance and contrast to give you the punchy picture you usually can only experience in a cinema. We’ve never seen the 55-inch LG C2 at this price before, and it’s worth every penny for anyone who loves excellent picture quality.

There’s simply no better TV on the market for any application. Movies, TV, gaming — it does it all. Take advantage of this incredible deal to massively upgrade your home viewing experience.

August has long been one of the very best smart locks on the market thanks to its convenient features and reliable design. Right now, the third-generation August Smart Lock is 19% off ahead of Black Friday, so you can save on smartening up your home.

It replaces the thumbturn on the inside of your home, but leaves the front of the door looking the same, so no one can guess you have a smart lock installed. You can also assign it to auto-lock when you leave the house or auto-unlock when you’re coming back home. That’s really helpful when you’ve got arms full of groceries. Just note that you’ll need to provide your own Wi-Fi bridge if you want it to connect to HomeKit, but that’s the case with many smart locks out there.

Need some extra storage to go with your best Mac? We’ve found just the thing – how about an extra 2TB of SSD storage that you can take anywhere you want? This Samsung portable SSD currently has $100 off, and will work perfectly with any Mac you might plug it into.

It’s lightning fast, has USB C 3.2, and is small enough to fit in any bag. What more could you want. Hm? Whats that? You want it in a funky color? Well this one’s blue – don’t say we don’t spoil you.

Oh, is that a TV to go with your new Apple TV 4K and sound bar you’re after? This deal has you covered. This LG 65-inch TV isn’t only massive, it’s also got a nice $100 discount. For the price, you’ll get an excellent TV set with incredible color reproductions and LGs QNED technology. It’s also 4K – so those Apple TV shows you’re watching will look phenomenal.

It’s available in loads of screen sizes too, so there’s one for everyone and everyroom.

The Apple TV 4K may have just been updated, but the previous version is now heavily discounted over at Amazon. The little black box of tricks is an excellent little streaming box, capable of some of the best sound format support of any product similar.

This deal will save you $80, making it less than the new one.

Did you know you can get a new iPhone 14 Pro for free at Verizon? No? Well, you do now. You’re going to have to trade in an older iPhone or old android device in good condition and choose one of the more comprehensive data plans, but you’re going to save up $1000 off a new iPhone – which if you haven’t noticed, is pretty much the exact price of the iPhone.

Let’s hope you’ve been using a screen protector and case on that old phone!

AirPods Max. Apple’s most impressive pair of headphones to date – beautifully constructed, spectacularly marketed, and tuned, on the audio side, on the warm side. Trying to find a pair at a good price? This could be your chance – this deal at Amazon may not make them the lowest price they’ve ever been, but they are close.

This $100 saving is a big one, and one worth grabbing while you can – it’s on all the colors too, which is something of a rarity.

Keep track of your heart rate, daily steps, and quality of sleep with this Apple Watch competitor. It also has built-in GPS so it can show you where you’ve been when on your jogs or other outdoor activities. Like swimming? No need to worry as it is water resistant up to 50 meters and it can go as far as you can with over six days of battery life.

The base MSRP already costs less than many of the Apple Watch offerings, but right now it’s a steal with $100 off.

Fancy a new Keyboard to go with your best Mac? There’s not much better than Apple’s Magic keyboard. It’s made of aluminum, with clicky chiclet keys. It’s also wireless and rechargeable – and this one even has a numpad. Nice.

Save $30 over at Amazon at the moment, and get those typing fingers happy again with a proper keyboard.

I love my little Beats Studio Buds – they sound great, are properly tiny, and they’re also reasonably priced. At the moment, you can save $50 on a pair at Amazon – making them almost a third the price of the AirPods Pro 2.

And, being completely candid, as nice as the AirPods Pro 2 are, you’re not going to miss out on too much if you go for a pair of these. They’ll still cancel noise, they still sound great, and they even come in some funky colors – at this price, almost a no-brainer.

Fancy a pair of 4K monitors? This dual monitor bundle at HP will do the trick. They’re 28-inches big each, so there’ll be plenty of monitor space when you plug in, and they’re both nice and compact to save space on your desk. HP makes some of the best 4K monitors for Mac, and these are no different.

If nothing else, you’ll be able to watch two movies at once get loads of work done with more screen to work with.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch that was released last year is an impressive piece of computer. The M1 Pro chip under the hood is extremely powerful, and the new 14-inch screen is big, and crucially, beautiful. This $400 saving doesn’t bring the laptop down to its lowest price, but it does make it less than if you were to head on over to Apple and spec up a 13-inch MacBook Pro to be similar.

And yeah, I know which MacBook I’d go for.

The iPad Mini is a wonderful little tablet, perfect for when you’re on the go. This deal over at Amazon is pretty monster, however – you can currently save $100 off one of the smaller iPads, in all the colors. That makes the 64GB tablet $399 – its lowest price ever.

It may not have the power of the iPad Air, or the yellow of the newest iPad 2022, but its smaller footprint and A15 make it a contender against both. Honestly? There’s possibly no better time to grab an iPad Mini than now – even if it is almost Black Friday.

Upgrading your HomeKit smart home can be pricey, but that’s why Black Friday is the perfect time to search for deals on the best Homekit accessories.

You can’t go wrong with the Arlo Video Doorbell.

‘Overweight’ neutron star defies a black hole theory, say astronomers | Black holes

An “overweight” neutron star has been observed by astronomers, who say the mysterious object confounds astronomical theories.

The hypermassive star was produced by the merger of two smaller neutron stars. Normally such collisions result in neutron stars so massive that they collapse into a black hole almost instantaneously under their own gravity. But the latest observations revealed the monster star hovering in view for more than a day before it faded out of sight.

“Such a massive neutron star with a long life expectancy is not normally thought to be possible,” said Dr Nuria Jordana-Mitjans, an astronomer at the University of Bath. “It is a mystery why this one was so long-lived.”

The observations also raise questions about the source of incredibly energetic flashes, known as short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), that accompany neutron star mergers. These outbursts – the most energetic events in the universe since the big bang – were widely assumed to be launched from the poles of the newly formed black hole. But in this case, the observed gamma-ray burst must have emanated from the neutron star itself, suggesting that an entirely different process was at play.

Neutron stars are the smallest, densest stars in existence, occupying a sweet spot between conventional stars and black holes. They are about 12 miles wide, and so dense that a teaspoon of material would have a mass of 1bn tonnes. They have a smooth crust of pure neutrons, 10bn times stronger than steel.

“They’re such weird exotic objects,” said Prof Carole Mundell, an astronomer at the University of Bath and co-author of the study. “We can’t gather this material and bring it back to our lab so the only way we can study it is when they do something in the sky that we can observe.”

In this case, Mundell said, something appears to have prevented the neutron star “noticing how massive it is”. One possibility is that the star was spinning so fast and with such immense magnetic fields that its collapse was delayed – something like how water stays inside a tilted bucket if it is swung around fast enough.

“This is the first direct glimpse that we may have of a hypermassive spinning neutron star in nature,” said Mundell. “My hunch is we’ll be finding more of them.”

The unexpected sightings were made using Nasa’s orbiting Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, which detected the initial gamma-ray burst coming from a galaxy about 10.6bn light years away. A robotic observatory, the Liverpool Telescope, situated in the Canary Islands, then automatically swivelled to view the aftermath of the merger. These observations revealed telltale signatures of a highly magnetised, rapidly spinning neutron star.

This suggests that the neutron star itself launched the gamma-ray burst, rather than it occurring after its gravitational collapse. Until now, the exact sequence of events has been hard to figure out.

“We were excited to catch the very early optical light from this short gamma-ray burst – something that is still largely impossible to do without using a robotic telescope,” said Mundell. “Our discovery opens new hope for upcoming sky surveys with telescopes such as the Rubin Observatory LSST, with which we may find signals from hundreds of thousands of such long-lived neutron stars before they collapse to become black holes.”

Stefano Covino, an astronomer at the Brera Astronomical Observatory in Milan, who was not involved in the research, said: “The team found evidence of the existence of a meta-stable hypermassive neutron star, which is a really important finding.”

He said the work could provide new insights into the interior structure of neutron stars, which are assumed to have a core of exotic matter, though the exact form that this takes is unknown.

The findings are published in the Astrophysical Journal.

Black hole announces itself to astronomers by ripping apart a star

A hitherto undiscovered black hole announced its presence to astronomers when it ripped apart and devoured a star that wandered too close to it.

The intermediate-mass black hole located in a dwarf galaxy a million light-years from Earth shredded the star in an occurrence that astronomers call a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE). The TDE made itself visible when it blasted out a flare of radiation so powerful that it briefly outshone every star in its dwarf galaxy home combined.

This TDE could help scientists better understand the relationship between galaxies and the black holes within them. It also provides astronomers with another intermediate black hole to study. “This discovery has created widespread excitement because we can use tidal disruption events not only to find more intermediate-mass black holes in quiet dwarf galaxies but also to measure their masses,” research co-author and UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) astronomer Ryan Foley said in a statement (opens in new tab).

The TDE flare  —  designated AT 2020neh   (opens in new tab)—  was first observed by astronomers using the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE), an astronomical survey that detects short-lived cosmic events like supernova explosions, as the black hole first began to devour the star.

The observation of this initial moment of destruction was vital in allowing an international team led by UCSC scientists and research first author and Niels Bohr Institute astronomer Charlotte Angus to measure the mass of the black hole finding it to be around between around 100,000 and 1 million times the mass of the sun. (opens in new tab)

TDEs have been successfully used to measure the mass of supermassive black holes in the past, but this is the first time they have been shown to work in documenting the masses of smaller midsized intermediate-mass black holes.

That means that the initial sighting of the incredibly fast AT 2020neh flare could provide a baseline for measuring midsized black hole masses in the future.

“The fact that we were able to capture this midsize black hole whilst it devoured a star offered us a remarkable opportunity to detect what otherwise would have been hidden from us,” Angus said. “What is more, we can use the properties of the flare itself to better understand this elusive group of middle-weight black holes, which could account for the majority of black holes in the centers of galaxies.”

Astronomers discovered a star being ripped apart by a black hole in the galaxy SDSS J152120.07+140410.5, 850 million light years away. Researchers pointed NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to examine the aftermath, called AT 2020neh, which is shown in the center of the image. This midsized class of black holes have a mass range of between 100 and 100,000 times that of the sun, making them significantly more massive than stellar-mass black holes but much smaller than the supermassive black holes that sit at the heart of most galaxies, including the Milky Way.

Physicists have long suspected that supermassive black holes, which can have masses as great as millions or even billions of times that of the sun, could grow to these tremendous masses grow as the result of the merger of intermediate-mass black holes.

One theory regarding the mechanism that could facilitate this growth suggests the early universe was rich with dwarf galaxies possessing intermediate black holes.

As these dwarf galaxies merged or were swallowed by larger galaxies the intermediate black holes within them cannibalized each other, thus growing in mass. This chain process of increasingly larger mergers would eventually lead to the supermassive black hole titans that sit at the heart of most galaxies today.

“If we can understand the population of intermediate-mass black holes out there  — how many there are and where they are located  —  we can help determine if our theories of supermassive black hole formation are correct,” co-author and UCSC professor of astronomy and astrophysics, Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz said.

One question that remains regarding this theory of black hole growth is do all dwarf galaxies have their own intermediate-mass black hole. This is difficult to answer because as black holes trap light behind an outer boundary called the event horizon, they are effectively invisible unless they are feeding on surrounding gas and dust, or if they are ripping up stars in TDEs.

Astronomers can use other methods such as looking at the gravitational influence of stars that orbit them to infer the presence of black holes. These detection methods are currently not sensitive enough to be applied to distant black holes in the centers of dwarf galaxies, however.

As a result, few intermediate-mass black holes have been tracked down to dwarf galaxies. That means by detecting and measuring mid-sized black holes TDE flares like AT 2020neh could be a vital tool in settling the debate surrounding supermassive black hole growth.

The team’s research was published on Nov. 10 in the journal Nature Astronomy (opens in new tab).
