BKFC KnuckleMania 2 PLAY-BY-PLAY:

155 lbs.: BKFC Lightweight champion Luis Palomino vs. Martin Brown

Round 1: “Baboon” Palomino in black and white, “Smash” Brown in purple. They crash together and Palomino gets in a right on the separation. Both men miss right hands. Looked like Brown got knocked off his feet, but they call it a slip and we continue. Uppercut from Palomino. Brown gets in a right. 10-9 Palomino.

Round 2: Both men crack right hands on each other. Again they land rights. Brown with some left body shots in the clinch before the ref breaks it up. Palomino swings big with the ten-second clapper and an uppercut likely steals the round. 10-9 Palomino.

Round 3:

Round 4:

Round 5:

175 lbs.: Mike Perry vs. Julian Lane

Round 1: Perry in white, Lane in pink. Lane starts out with a couple jabs and an overhand. Big right hand counter sends Lane down and he’s wobbled getting up! Jab from Lane. That cuts Perry over the eye. They clinch and Perry with a left uppercut. Lane cut, too. He’s lunging and landing with that jab. 10-8 Perry

Round 2: More measured round so far. Lane felt the power and Perry has calmed down a bit. Counter left almost drops Lane, but they call it a slip. Lane keeps landing his jab and is also starting to land some hooks, too. Right hand from Perry. 10-9 Lane in a close round.

Round 3: Perry advancing and gets in a right to the ribs. Left hook, too. Nice right hand from Lane as he circled out and countered Perry as he was coming forward. Perry to the body and follows to the head. 10-9 Lane in another close round.

Round 4: The doc checks out Lane before the round starts, but we’re up and going. Perry surges forward and lands a couple shots. Perry with a left slap that gets a warning from the ref. Good counter left from Perry. Right to the body as well. They both get in lefts. Nice overhand right from Lane. 10-9 Perry.

Round 5: Perry is now bleeding from his left side, too. Lunging right hand from Lane. Another right on the exit from the clinch. Counter right from Perry, but Lane got in a straight and Perry might be wobbly. Lane misses the 1, lands the 2. Perry gets a left to the body. Ducks a big winging punch. Lane with a left to end the fight. 10-9 Lane, and I have it as 47-47 on my card.

Mike Perry def. Julian Lane via Unanimous Decision (48-46 x3)

Catchweight 165 lbs.: Chad Mendes vs. Joshua Alvarez

Round 1: Note: Joshua “Famez” Alvarez missed weight for this contest, tipping the scales at 161.4. Mendes showed up on weight at 155.8. Mendes in black, Famez in white. Mendes winging right hands early. Famez not throwing much, being very conscious of Mendes’ power. Gets in a jab. He’s walking forward most of the time, but not much being thrown. Mendes not landing much either, however. 10-9 in a close round.

Round 2: Mendes shoots, almost for a takedown, but probably to fluster his opponent. Mendes gets in a left. Famez with a clipping right, Mendes swinging big in the pocket, but not landing on the bullseye. BIG right hand down the pipe plants Famez! He gets up and the round ends before anything else can land. 10-8 Mendes.

Round 3: Mendes doing a good job at exploding when he wants to go. Famez isn’t really throwing anything much now, focusing more on avoiding the shots from Mendes. Nope, doesn’t avoid that right hand and down he goes again. 10-8 Mendes.

Round 4: Credit to Alvarez for still being here, despite two bad knockdowns. He’s throwing a bit more now as his corner threatened to stop it if he just stands there and doesn’t throw. Mendes wraps a hand behind the neck and pummels in two left uppercuts, sending Famez down for a third time. Mendes surges forwards and down he goes again! He stands at 9, but the ref waives it off, and Mendes has done it.

Chad Mendes def. Joshua “Famez” Alvarez via TKO at 1:34 of Round 4

125 lbs.: BKFC women’s Flyweight champion Britain Hart vs. Christine Ferea

Round 1: Hart in purple and gold, black for Ferea. Slow start here as both women are feeling and feinting. Ferea gets in a jab to the body and Hart retaliates with a right hand to the head. 10-10

Round 2: Hart lands a jab. Ferea gets in a straight right. Hart throwing, but everything landing about 3 inches short. Good right from Ferea now. She jabs to the body and the head. Another right hand. Easy 10-9 Ferea

Round 3: Hart just seems to be throwing where she hopes to catch Ferea walking in, because almost all he stuff lands short unless Ferea is also throwing. Both women flurry and clinch. 10-9 Hart

Round 4: Good swinging from both women to open the round. Ferea grabs a hockey-style collar tie and is firing short shots over and over. Another big series of flurries from both women. Nice Hart right hand drives Ferea back. Jab from Ferea. Ferea ducks a right and they clinch. 10-9 Ferea

Round 5: Good rights from Ferea. Hart with a 3-2. Ferea marches forward with a 1-2. Two rights to the body from Ferea. 10-9 Ferea on my scorecard and 49-37 overall.

Christine Ferea def. Britain Hart via Unanimous Decision (49-46, 48-47 x2)

220 lbs.: Gustavo Trujillo vs. Stephen Townsel

Round 1: Trujillo in blue, Townsel in black. Trujillo gets in a left. Shot to the body, too. Townsel clips a right hand. Down goes Townsel off a left hand! He makes the count and we’re back. Right from Trujillo, causing Townsel to duck and turn his back. They restart and there’s a big right uppercut from the Cuban and Townsel is down and out.

Gustavo Trujillo def. Stephen Townsel via KO at 1:41 of Round 1

UFC veteran Mike Perry inks multi-fight contract to join BKFC

Mike Perry has joined the roster at Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.

The veteran welterweight has officially inked a multi-fight deal to join the bare-knuckle boxing promotion after spending the past five years as part of the UFC roster.

BKFC officials confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Tuesday. Terms of Perry’s contract were not disclosed, and his management firm First Round Management did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“Let’s skip all the formalities! This sport is evolving and I am here to strike fear into the hearts of my competitors!” Perry stated in a press release. “I plan to intimidate the world when I show what a truly skilled combat specialist is capable of with his bare hands.

“I will dismantle the opposition and reach the glory I have longed for my entire life. I will be crowned king of the streets and king of combat sports! They will make me a Platinum Crown and carry me on the bloody backs of my defeated rivals! I am here to go straight to the top and make anyone think twice about entering my world! BKFC is my world!”

Over the past few years, Perry has gained a reputation as one of the nastiest knockout strikers in the sport while also putting on a slew of entertaining fights while competing in the UFC. He holds wins over fighters such as Paul Felder, Alex Oliveira and Mickey Gall and earned a pair of “Fight of the Night” awards, including his past fight with current welterweight contender Vicente Luque.

“We’re thrilled to bring Mike aboard to our vast stable of exciting fighters,” BKFC President Dave Feldman said. “Over the last seven years he’s proven to be one of the toughest fighters in mixed martial arts and his skill set along with his aggressive style works very well for our growing international fan base.”

Details about Perry’s official BKFC debut will be announced in the coming weeks.

Dana White reacts to tragic death of BKFC fighter: ‘Is anybody shocked?’

Dana White was saddened but not surprised to hear the news about Justin Thornton.

A one-time BKFC fighter, Thornton tragically died at age 38 this week following his knockout loss at BKFC 20. Thornton had been hospitalized since losing to Dillon Cleckler in 19 seconds on August 20. He was reportedly partially paralyzed in the aftermath of the fight and battled an infection from a spinal cord injury before succumbing to his injuries.

White was asked about the sad situation Tuesday night at the Contender Series post-fight press conference.

“First of all, is anybody shocked?” the UFC president told reporters in Las Vegas. “I mean, in bare-knuckle fighting? I’m not a big fan. And I get, I guess I would call it concerned, when I see some of our people when they leave here and go there. It’s like, oh my God.

“But when you look at this, we’ve been putting on fights for 25 years. I’ve done over 7,000 fights with no serious injuries in the UFC.”

In addition to bare-knuckle boxing, Thornton was also an MMA fighter who put together a 6-18 record over 24 bouts. He notably fought Titan FC COO Lex McMahon in November 2020 and competed against eventual UFC veterans Chase Sherman and Walt Harris during his 13-year career.

Several former UFC fighters have signed with BKFC in recent years, including Paige VanZant, Chris Leben, Hector Lombard, Rachael Ostovich, and Chad Mendes.

Following Thornton’s untimely passing, BKFC president David Feldman wrote in a statement that the promotion was “very saddened” to be notified of Thornton’s death and sent “our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones” on behalf of BKFC.

In recent days, Thorton’s death has brought increased scrutiny to bare-knuckle boxing and the role of state athletic commissions — and in White’s eyes, that scrutiny is deserved.

“Every year we spend over $20 million on athletic medical — $20 million a year — health and wellness or whatever it may be,” White said. “And 25 percent of our athletes, we send to specialists. So a guy will come and his brain test won’t come out, it’ll be irregular, so we send him to a specialist. If something was irregular with his heart, he or she goes and sees a heart specialist, and we spend the money to find out whatever it is that’s wrong with him.

“And as a result of that, our pre-fight screening, throughout the last 20 years we found 10 athletes that had life-threatening medical problems with them and career-ending, that they shouldn’t be fighting — that if they weren’t in the UFC, they probably would’ve fought and they probably would’ve died.

“So we shouldn’t even be talked about in the same sentence as bare-knuckle boxing,” White continued. “It’s two completely different worlds. And yes, we’re very sorry to hear that this guy passed away, but you’re never going to see any of these other organizations doing the type of health and safety and medical testing that we do for our athletes.”

Paige VanZant issues short statement following loss at BKFC 19

Paige VanZant addressed her loss at BKFC 19 to Rachael Ostovich with a simple statement on social media late Friday evening.

After the scores were read and the winner of her main event bout on Friday was revealed to be her opponent, VanZant stormed out of the ring, clearly upset with the outcome of the bout.

After a hard-fought five-round battle against Ostovich, the former UFC strawweight and flyweight competitor found herself on the wrong end of the judges’ scorecards for the second time in a row in bareknuckle competition.

VanZant did not attend the post-fight press conference to address the media. Instead, she offered a short picture message on Instagram following the fight.

The image reads, “I will rise. I will always rise. Don’t you doubt that even for a second.” VanZant offered no additional caption, letting the short but simple message speak for itself.

VanZant dove into the world of bareknuckle boxing earlier this year, taking on Britain Hart in the main event of BKFC: Knuckle Mania in February. Hart, who had a victorious outing on Friday evening against Jenny Clausius, defeated VanZant by unanimous decision.

Now winless in her two BKFC main events, the future for VanZant is unclear. Although she was competitive in both outings, her opponents were able to beat her to the punch and earn the judges’ favor.

Coincidentally, VanZant’s last victory in combat sports competition was against Ostovich at UFC on ESPN+ 1 in January 2019.

Judging by her pre-fight comments and her social media message after the fight, VanZant likely isn’t finished with combat sports.

Watch Paige VanZant vs. Rachael Ostovich 2 full fight video highlights – BKFC 19

Paige VanZant fell to 0-2 inside of the bare knuckle boxing ring last night (Fri., July 23, 2021) at BKFC 19 live on FITE TV PPV from inside Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, Fla., when she lost to fellow UFC veteran Rachael Ostovich in the main event.

VanZant and Ostovich both came out firing as the former UFC fighters met in the center of the ring and exchanged heavy punches. After the action calmed Ostovich seemed to keep her cool and perform comfortably in her bare knuckle debut. VanZant was the more active puncher, but she didn’t land at a great percentage.

It was mostly a back-and-forth fight for the first 15 minutes before the action hit the fourth round. That’s when Ostovich landed a beautiful right hand as “12 Gauge” was coming inside. VanZant was stunned, but she didn’t fall down. VanZant would recover and turned things up in the fifth round to try and salvage a win. Unfortunately for her, Ostovich captured a few more rounds to bank the unanimous decision victory.

Featherweight: John Chalbeck vs. Greg Bono

Round one: Quick left hook and right hand from Chalbeck. Bono definitely the less technical of the two. Body shot, 3-2 by Chalbeck. Fast jab. 1-2. Lead right, then a three-punch combo. He shrugs off an overhand right and pours on combinations until Bono goes down. He’s up near the end of the count and Chalbeck continues the barrage. He takes his foot off the gas for a bit, then cracks Bono with right hands. They trade in the clinch. 10-8 Chalbeck.

Round two: Chalbeck working behind the jab, takes a body shot. Good head movement, continuing to taunt. Bono tries overhand rights. Bono comes back with a flurry. Counter right by Chalbeck, eats a jab, trades inside. 10-9 Chalbeck.

Light Heavyweight: Haim Gozali vs. John McAllister

Round one: McAllister marches right into the clinch, tried to land inside. Extremely aggressive early. Ref separates them again. McAllister continues to advance and spins him around with a lead right. Gozali ties up for a breather. Again a minute in. More clinching. McAllister punching in the clinch. Separation. Flurry from McAllister seems to ding Gozali, who clinches again. Wild exchange. 10-9 McAllister

Round two: Gozali goes back to the clinch, lands some body shots. Good right by McAllister, but Gozali responds with a vicious combination. A right hand sends McAllister to the mat, and while he beats the count, he looks totally compromised. Clinch punches put him down again. He’s up, but McAllister is done.

Final result: Gozali def. McAllister by TKO

Light Heavyweight: Dillon Cleckler vs. Chris Jensen

Round one: Both men fall short early, then Cleckler knocks him back with a straight right before crushing him with another right to the body. Jensen’s in agony and he doesn’t even come close to beating the count.

Final result: Cleckler def. Jensen by KO

Bantamweight: Charisa Sigala vs. Taylor Starling

Round one: They meet in the center and go Frye-Takayama for a bit before the ref splits them up. Starling already cut. constant exchanges, Sigala seems like the more technical. As I say that, Starling floors her with a right cross halfway through. Sigala beats the count and Starling is all over her. Brutal punches from both women. Sigala landing on the retreat. They clinch before the bell. 10-8 Starling.

Round two: Right back to the close-quarters bruising. Sigala the more technical, Starling finding success with her pressure. Trading in the clinch. Good counter rights from Sigala. Separation. Good 1-2 from Starling halfway through, then another right cross that puts Sigala on her seat. She beats the count again, but is struggling to get out of the way of Starling’s right hand. Clinch. 1-1-2 from Starling. 10-8 Starling.

Round three: The story continues, and there’s another big cross by Starling. Good jabs, big right behind them. The pressure’s working for her. Halfway through. Sigala lands a combo, eats a pair of crosses. Right hands continue to land for Starling. Sigala gets in some nice shots at the end that split Starling’s cut back open. 10-9 Starling.

Round four: Quick close-range exchanges. Sigala having a better round so far. Right hands still connecting for Starling. Halfway through. Big combo by Starling. 1-2 connects. Good jab. 10-9 Starling.

Round five: Sigala lands a right, eats a combo in return. Left hook by Starling on the break. Starling right hand. Three-piece lands a minute in. Another combo behind it. Sigala’s combos aren’t there this round. There’s another right by Starling, eats one in return. Starling forces her back to the ropes for a final exchange. 10-9 Starling.
