South Dakota State vs. North Dakota State score: Jackrabbits rumble past Bison for first national title

No. 1 South Dakota State captured its first national championship in program history with a 45-21 victory over rival No. 3 North Dakota State at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The victory was the fourth straight for the Jackrabbits over the Bison and marks a high point in the tremendous 25-year career for coach John Stiegelmeier, the 2022 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.

The Jackrabbits have reached great heights since moving up to Division I, including five trips to the national semifinals in the past six seasons. However, a matchup against their intense rivals provided a unique stage. North Dakota State came into Sunday as the most dominant program in Division I football, winning nine of the past 11 championships with an undefeated record in championship games since the game moved to Frisco.

The last time these two teams played, the Bison took a 21-7 lead on the Jackrabbits in the regular-season matchup before South Dakota State stormed back. This time, it was South Dakota State that jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the first half behind a bruising offensive effort. The Jackrabbits scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions and used a fumble from North Dakota State running back Kobe Johnson to swing a double-digit lead, the first deficit of more than seven points the Bison have faced in a title game.

South Dakota State pulled out all the tricks to pulverize the Bison. Quarterback Mark Gronowski, who earned Most Valuable Player honors, threw a jump pass to fullback Michael Morgan for a 44-yard touchdown and later broke away for a 51-yard touchdown run to all but ice the game to start the third quarter. Running back Amar Johnson sped his way to more than 100 yards rushing in the first half alone with the help of a 32-yard rushing score.

The Jackrabbits rushed for 299 yards and three touchdowns overall, only brought below the 300 mark thanks to Gronowski kneeling in victory formation. The Jackrabbits averaged 8.7 yards per play and dominated the game from beginning to end. Brothers Jadon and Jaxon Janke also combined for 121 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

North Dakota State lost multiple regular season games in a non-pandemic seasons for the first time since 2015, but had opportunities to break into the game. North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller threw a pair of touchdowns, but added two interceptions. The Jackrabbits defense did its job, too, holding North Dakota State to just 4.3 yards per carry. Outside of a 38-14 loss to Southern Illinois during the spring pandemic season, this is the biggest North Dakota State loss since a 37-6 decision against Cal Poly on Oct. 8, 2005.

South Dakota State previously earned a trip to the FCS championship game during the spring 2021 pandemic season, but fell just short to Sam Houston after an injury to Gronowski. This time, the Jackrabbits left no doubt. The championship is the 11th in 13 seasons for the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The other two national title winners in that span — Sam Houston and James Madison — are both moving to the FBS level. However, the Great Plains powers remain at the forefront of the FCS.

Yellowstone bison gores Pennsylvania woman, 71, in second attack this week, third in month, park says

Placeholder while article actions load

A Pennsylvania woman visiting Yellowstone National Park with her daughter was gored by a bison in the second incident of its kind this week and the third in a month, park officials said.

The 71-year-old from West Chester, Pa., whose name the National Park Service has not released, was walking back to her vehicle near Storm Point at Yellowstone Lake on Wednesday when a bull bison charged, according to a news release.

“The woman and her daughter inadvertently approached the bison as they were returning to their vehicle at the trailhead, causing the bull bison to charge,” the Park Service said on Thursday.

The woman suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” and was taken to West Park Hospital in Cody, Wyo.

It’s unclear exactly how close the woman and her daughter were when the bison charged. The park, which lies mostly in Wyoming, requires visitors to stay more than 25 yards from bison.

“Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild and can be dangerous when approached,” the Park Service said, repeating the same warning it had put out just two days before.

The incident is the latest in a series in which bison have gored visitors who did not keep the appropriate distance.

Yellowstone visitor gored in second bison attack in a month, park says

Earlier in the week, a 34-year-old man from Colorado Springs was gored by a bison at the Old Faithful geyser. The man was walking with his family on a boardwalk near Giant Geyser on Monday when a bull bison charged the group, according to a news release.

“Family members did not leave the area, and the bull bison continued to charge and gored the male,” the Park Service said.

The man suffered an arm injury and was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, the hospital for Yellowstone. The Park Service said the Monday incident involved a visitor who was “too close to the animal.”

Yellowstone bison gores visitor and flings her 10 feet, park says

Before those two incidents, a 25-year-old woman from Grove City, Ohio, was gored by a bison and thrown 10 feet into the air on Memorial Day after she also got too close to the animal. While on a boardwalk at Black Sand Basin in late May, the woman approached within 10 feet of the animal, park officials said. Two other people also were within 25 yards of the bison, the Park Service said in a news release.

When the woman approached the bison at the boardwalk west of Old Faithful, the animal charged her.

“Consequently, the bison gored the woman and tossed her 10 feet into the air,” the Park Service said at the time.

The woman suffered a puncture wound and other injuries and was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

As the largest mammals in North America, bison have injured more people at Yellowstone than any other animal, according to the Park Service. They are unpredictable and enormously strong. Although they can weigh as much as 1 ton and stand about 6 feet at the shoulder, bison can run up to 35 mph, which is “three times faster than humans,” the Park Service says. They can also jump up to six feet vertically “and can quickly pivot to combat predators,” according to the National Wildlife Federation.

Yellowstone is the only place in the United States where bison have continuously lived since the prehistoric age, according to the Interior Department. Between 2,300 and 5,500 bison live in Yellowstone, according to the Park Service.

Yellowstone officials have stressed that visitors must give animals space if they come near campsites, trails, boardwalks, parking lots or developed areas. Visitors should stay more than 25 yards from all large animals, such as bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes, the Park Service says. It advises guests to stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves.

While wild animal attacks are rare, dangerous encounters do happen, especially when humans ignore — or are unaware of — the rules and etiquette surrounding viewing wildlife. Cameron Harsh, the programs director in the U.S. office of World Animal Protection, an international nonprofit group, told The Washington Post last month that “wild animals want to be left to themselves.”

Yellowstone will reopen most of northern loop this weekend

The third bison incident in a month is part of what has been an eventful time at Yellowstone. Park officials announced Thursday that its northern loop will reopen on Saturday, less than three weeks after the park suffered severe flood damage. Record rainfall and historic flooding caused Yellowstone to close all five entrances on June 13. But 93 percent of the park’s road system is now open, and the temporary alternating license-plate system to limit visitors will be lifted during the holiday weekend.

The Wednesday incident remains under investigation, according to the Park Service. In its news release, the Park Service stressed to visitors — again — to not approach bison.

“Give bison space when they are near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area,” the Park Service said. “If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in close proximity.”

Yellowstone bison gores Colorado man near Old Faithful in second recent attack, park says

A Colorado man visiting Yellowstone National Park was gored by a bison at Old Faithful this week in the second attack of its kind in the past month, park officials said.

The 34-year-old from Colorado Springs, whose name the National Park Service has not released, was walking with his family on a boardwalk near Giant Geyser on Monday when a bull bison charged the group, according to a news release.

“Family members did not leave the area, and the bull bison continued to charge and gored the male,” the Park Service said.

The man suffered an arm injury and was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, the hospital for Yellowstone.

How close the man was to the bison before the attack is unclear. The park, which lies mostly in Wyoming, requires visitors to stay more than 25 yards from bison. The Park Service said this was another case in which a visitor was “too close to the animal.”

“This incident remains under investigation, and there is no additional information to share,” the Park Service said.

Less than a month ago, a 25-year-old woman from Grove City, Ohio, was gored by a bison and thrown 10 feet into the air on Memorial Day after she got too close to the animal. While on a boardwalk at Black Sand Basin, the woman approached within 10 feet of the animal, park officials said. Two other people also were within 25 yards of the bison, the Park Service said in a news release.

When the woman approached the bison at the boardwalk west of the Old Faithful geyser, the animal charged her.

“Consequently, the bison gored the woman and tossed her 10 feet into the air,” the Park Service said at the time.

The woman, who survived the attack, suffered a puncture wound and other injuries and was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. It is unclear whether the two other people inside the 25-yard limit were injured. That incident, like the one this week, also happened on a Monday morning.

Bison, the largest mammals in North America, have injured more people at Yellowstone than any other animal, according to the Park Service. Bison are unpredictable and enormously strong, and although they can weigh as much as one ton and stand about 6 feet at the shoulder, bison can run up to 35 mph, which is “three times faster than humans,” the Park Service says.

The Yellowstone bison are considered special because “they’re the pure descendants (free of cattle genes) of early bison that roamed our country’s grasslands,” Interior says.

How travelers can stay safe during encounters with wild animals

Wild animal attacks are rare, but dangerous encounters do happen, especially when humans ignore — or are unaware of — wildlife-viewing rules and etiquette.

“Wild animals want to be left to themselves,” Cameron Harsh, the programs director in the U.S. office of World Animal Protection, an international nonprofit group, told The Washington Post this month. “They don’t want to interact with humanity.”

Yellowstone recently reopened after severe flooding damaged roads and bridges and caused the park to close for about a week this month.

The Park Service said Monday’s attack was the second in the past month “of a visitor getting too close to the animal and the bison responding to the perceived threat by goring the individual.” Park officials again emphasized that Yellowstone visitors should keep a safe distance.

“Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild and can be dangerous when approached,” the Park Service said.

Bison gores woman after she approaches animal at Yellowstone

A woman was gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming after she approached the animal Monday morning, parks officials said.

The unidentified 25-year-old from Grove City, Ohio walked towards the bovine as it neared a boardwalk just north of Old Faithful, according to a press release.

As she got within ten feet of the animal, it gored her and tossed her ten feet into the air, officials said.

The victim suffered a puncture wound and other injuries and was taken to a hospital, authorities said.

Yellowstone visitors are advised to stay at least 75 feet away from large animals like bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 300 feet away from bears and wolves.

“Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans,” parks officials warned.

North Dakota State vs. Montana State score: Bison rout Bobcats for ninth FCS championship in 11 years

No. 2 seed North Dakota State stormed its way to another FCS national championship in a 38-10 victory over No. 8 seed Montana State in one of the most dominant performances the title game’s history. The Bison have now won nine Division I championships since 2011, and they are a perfect 9-0 since the title game moved to Frisco, Texas.

North Dakota State bludgeoned Montana State behind 380 yards rushing and 7.2 yards per carry against a strong Bobcats defense. Running back Kobe Johnson rushed for 106 yards, 76 of which came on a touchdown run in the second quarter. Fullback Hunter Luepke added 82 yards and three scores in an MVP performance for the champions. Quarterback Cam Miller threw for 126 yards and a touchdown on 13 passing attempts.

The Bison posted 270 yards rushing in the first half alone behind All-American offensive linemen Cody Mausch and Cordell Volson, averaging an even 10 yards per carry, to take a 28-0 lead into the break. From there, the Bison effectively ran out the clock en route to their next national championship.

Montana State traversed a difficult path to reach the national championship game, beating 2021 title game participants Sam Houston and South Dakota State by a combined 73-36 in its last two matchups. However, the Bobcats struggled to find any consistency on offense against the physical BIson front. Starting quarterback Tommy Mellott was knocked out with an apparent lower-body injury on the first drive of the game. In relief, Tucker Rovig completed just 13 of 28 passes for 156 yards, one touchdown and one interception. However, 100 of his yards came in the second half with the game out of reach.

The championship is the second for Matt Entz, who becomes the third straight North Dakota State coach to win multiple national championships. Former coaches Chris Klieman and Craig Bohl, who won the first seven FCS titles, now coach in the FBS ranks at Kansas State and Wyoming, respectively.

North Dakota State’s win matches the biggest margin of victory in the FCS championship game since 2003 (28 points). The Bison beat Towson 35-7 in 2013, while then-FCS Appalachian State capped off its legendary 2007 campaign — the year it beat Michigan — with a 49-21 win over Delaware.
