Apple CEO Tim Cook, Jony Ive, Laurene Powell Jobs panel interview

Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Wednesday that Apple doesn’t spend a lot of effort improving the texting experience between iPhones and Android devices because its users haven’t been asking for it.

“I don’t hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy on that, on this point,” Cook said in response to an audience question at Vox Media’s Code Conference in Beverly Hills, California. “I would love to convert you to iPhone.”

The response comes less than a month after Google kicked off an advertising campaign meant to put pressure on Apple.

Currently, texts between iPhones use iMessage, which has a much smoother experience than when an Android device texts an iPhone, in which SMS messages show up as green bubbles. Google wants Apple to adopt RCS, a kind of messaging that is meant as a next-generation SMS replacement with encryption and other modern features.

The questioner pressed Cook, saying that he can’t send videos to his mom because of the limitations of SMS messaging.

“Buy your mom an iPhone,” Cook said.

Privacy push goes back to Steve Jobs

Cook was joined by former Apple head designer Jony Ive and Laurene Powell Jobs to discuss the legacy of Apple’s founder and announce a new Steve Jobs archive and potential documentary.

Apple’s recent privacy push is not a new goal for the company — the thinking actually goes back to founder Steve Jobs, Cook said.

“Steve really ingrained in the company in the early days in the importance of privacy and it has only grown since,” Cook said.

Cook cited a 2010 talk by Jobs where he said that privacy means that users consent to share their data. “Privacy means people know what they’re signing up for, in plain English, and repeatedly. That’s what it means,” Jobs said in the talk cited by Cook.

Cook’s remarks come as the company’s privacy push has drawn increasing criticism as self-serving as the company has introduced new privacy features that make online advertising more difficult to measure as Apple reportedly plans to increase the size of its advertising business and introduces new ad units.

That’s the same philosophy behind App Tracking Transparency, a feature introduced in 2021 that has roiled the online advertising industry. iPhone owners are asked before sharing a unique device identification number with apps when they boot up — and most iPhone owners choose not to, preventing online advertisers from accurately tracking the performance of their ads.

Companies including Facebook parent Meta have blasted the change as anticompetitive. In February, Meta said it would cost it $10 billion this year.

“What we felt is that people should own their data, and they should make their own decision,” Cook said on Wednesday. “People should be empowered to be able to make that decision in a really straightforward and simple manner. Not buried 95 pages deep in a privacy policy somewhere.”

Cook elaborated that Apple follows stricter rules than advertisers and defended the company’s search ads.

“We’ve never said digital advertising is a bad thing,” Cook said. “What is not good is vacuuming up people’s data when they’re not doing so on an informed basis.”

Cook was asked if he saw Apple as a powerful company that has stepped in because regulators haven’t passed privacy laws.

“We’re not trying to be a regulator,” Cook said. “All we’re trying to do is give people the ability to make the decision for themselves.”

LA County mask mandate: Health officials decline to impose universal public indoor rule

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The Los Angeles County Health Department declined Thursday to impose a universal public indoor mask mandate, citing a “decent decrease” in cases and hospitalizations.

Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer made the announcement during a livestreamed meeting.

“Given the declines in case of hospitalization numbers, we’re hopeful that the admission rate over the next few days remains under 10 new admissions per 100,000 residents and L.A. County is soon officially moved by (the Centers for Disease Control) to the ‘medium’ community level,” Ferrer said. “As I noted last week, any indication that the county would soon be moving to the medium community level would be a good reason to not move forward with universal indoor masking.”

For most of the pandemic, L.A. County has required masks in some indoor spaces, including health care facilities, Metro trains and buses, airports, jails and homeless shelters. The new mandate would have expanded the requirement to all indoor public spaces, including shared offices, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, retail stores, restaurants and bars, theaters and schools.

WATCH | Dr. Barbara Ferrer discusses county’s decision to not reinstate indoor mask mandate

Supervisor Kathryn Barger hailed the decision to hold off on reinstating the rule.

“Unenforceable mandates don’t work,” Barger said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “We must continue to marshal our mandates and resources effectively in the fight against COVID-19.”

Supervisor Janice Hahn had joined her in opposing a mandate, saying she feared imposing such a rule would be “very divisive for L.A. County.”

“I honestly believe there are a significant number of the population who are not willing to accept mask mandates at this point,” Hahn said. “And many of them, the ones that have contacted me, pointed out that we do have more tools now than we had at the beginning of the pandemic.”

The county entered the “high” category two weeks ago when the average daily rate of COVID-related hospital admissions rose above 10 per 100,000 residents. As of July 21, the rate was 11.7 admissions per 100,000 residents.

Earlier this week, as residents awaited the decision, several cities — Beverly Hills, El Segundo, Pasadena and Long Beach — announced they would not enforce an indoor mask mandate if one were implemented.

The El Segundo City Council voted during a special meeting Tuesday night against enforcing a possible mask order.

The Beverly Hills City Council cast a similar vote Monday night. The cities of Long Beach and Pasadena — both of which operate their own health departments separate from the county — announced Tuesday they would not issue mask mandates, even if the county did.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said cases may have slowed, but he would support whatever health officials decide.

“If they say this is something we need to do for a couple weeks to help gets kids in schools, I’ll be supportive of that,” Garcetti told reporters. “But it does look like it may have crested in terms of the number of cases. If that happens with hospitalizations as well, we may not need to go to mandatory masking.”

The shooting was reported at the couple’s home in the 1100 block of Maytor Place at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday. Avant was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she died. Clarence Avant and a security guard were also on the property at the time of the shooting but were not hurt.

“That’s good. We are happy that the police are doing something,” said Yafa Cohan, a neighbor.

Beverly Hills police Chief Mark Stainbrook identified the suspect as 29-year-old Aariel Maynor, whose vehicle was spotted on several surveillance videos driving eastbound out of the city shortly after the shooting that killed Avant.

LAPD’s Hollywood Division officers were alerted to a shooting and burglary call in the 6000 block of Graciosa Drive at about 3:30 a.m., where Maynor was found in the backyard of the home, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the foot.

It was an “astute watch commander at Hollywood that, starting to put two and two together, and reached out to Beverly Hills,” according to LAPD Deputy Chief Blake Chow. Similarities between the two break-ins prompted Beverly Hills detectives to come out to Hollywood to investigate further.

With the arrest, police say they believe there is no further threat to the public, but the investigation is ongoing.

“At this time, we’re only looking at him as a suspect, but again, there’s a lot of evidence to go through, so we’re leaving open the possibility there could be other people involved,” Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook described Maynor as a parolee with an extensive criminal history. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he was most recently released to parole supervision on Sept. 1 after serving four years for second-degree robbery. He has previously served time for a separate robbery conviction and grand theft.

Maynor was arrested by the LAPD and taken to a local hospital. Evidence connecting Maynor to the fatal shooting of Avant, including an AR-15 rifle, was collected by Beverly Hills police detectives, who have since taken over both burglary investigations. Beverly Hills police say he will be booked into jail when medically cleared by doctors.

Clarence Avant: Suspect arrested after famed music executive’s wife Jacqueline Avant killed in Beverly Hills shooting

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — A parolee with an extensive criminal record was arrested for a Beverly Hills home invasion and shooting that resulted in the death of Jacqueline Avant, wife of a famed music executive, police announced Thursday.
The Beverly Hills Police Department identified the suspect as 29-year-old Aariel Maynor of Los Angeles.

They say Maynor is a parolee with a long criminal history. He was caught after apparently accidentally shooting himself in the foot with an AR-15 while committing another break-in just an hour after allegedly killing Avant.

Beverly Hills officers were called to the Avants’ home in the 1100 block of Maytor Place around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning after a reported shooting. Officers found the 81-year-old with a gunshot wound. Avant was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

About one hour later, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood division responded to another shooting call in the 6000 block of Graciosa Drive, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his foot.

Investigators later determined that Maynor was involved in a burglary at that home and had accidentally shot himself with an AR-15. Further investigation tied him to Avant’s death, according to a press release. The caliber of the weapon matched the bullets found at the Avant murder scene.

Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark G. Stainbrook said there were multiple surveillance videos that showed Maynor’s vehicle heading eastbound out of Beverly Hills shortly after the shooting.

Police believe Maynor acted alone and a motive remains unclear.

After the arrest was announced, the Avant and Sarandos families released a statement thanking police. (Clarence and Jackie Savant’s daughter, Nicole, is married to Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix.)

“Our deepest gratitude to The City of Beverly Hills, the BHPD and all law enforcement for their diligence on this matter,” the statement read. “Now, let justice be served.”

Avant, known affectionately as “Jackie,” was well-known and well-respected for her philanthropy over the years.

Her husband, Clarence Avant, was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He was also the subject of a 2019 Netflix documentary “The Black Godfather,” which highlighted his influence in the music industry.

Stainbrook confirmed there was a private security guard on the property at the time, but it was not clear how that individual may have interacted with the suspect.

On Wednesday, Stainbrook read a statement from the Avant family:
“The entire Avant family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love, support and condolences for Jacqueline Avant. Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills, who has made an immeasurable positive contribution and impact on the arts community. She will be missed by her family, friends and all of the people she has held throughout her amazing life.”

The woman was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but did not survive. At an afternoon news conference, Beverly Hills police Chief Mark Stainbrook confirmed the woman killed was 81-year-old Jacqueline Avant.

“The Avant family’s contributions to the world of entertainment and to better communities across Los Angeles are unmatched,” Stainbrook said. He said the department is in contact with the family and offering their support and resources.

Avant was the wife of 90-year-old music executive Clarence Avant and mother-in-law of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Clarence Avant, who was not injured in the shooting, is known as the “Godfather of Black Music” who worked with the likes of Louis Armstrong, the SOS Band, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Babyface.

Clarence Avant and a security guard were present at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt, Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook said he was asked to thank everyone for their messages of support and condolences on behalf of the Avant family.

“Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills who has made an immeasurable, positive contribution and impact on the arts community. She will be missed by her family, friends, and all of the people she has helped throughout her amazing life,” Stainbrook read from the Avant family’s statement.

The Avants were married for 54 years. Danny Bakewell Sr., who is the owner of the Black newspaper the Los Angeles Sentinel,  says he is a lifelong friend of the Avant family and was “overwhelmingly pained” at the loss of such a beautiful person.

“For her to be killed in such a senseless way is unfathomable. There are no human beings more kind and generous than Clarence and Jackie, and for their home and their lives to be violated in such a violent manner is unconscionable,” he said in a statement.

Homicide investigators are at the home, which is located in the Hollywood Hills, between Coldwater Canyon and Laurel Canyon Boulevards.

“I cannot believe this is happening to our neighborhood,” Vida Ardebichi, a neighbor who said she’d often see the 81-year-old Avant out walking, said.

Man robbed of $500K watch in Beverly Hills recalls ordeal

The target of a brazen daylight robbery outside a Beverly Hills eatery that netted a $500,000 watch — and left an innocent bystander shot — recounted the terrifying ambush to The Post on Friday.

Shay Belhassen says that during the ambush he “grabbed the gun and wrestled” the thieves to the ground.
Shay Belhassen

Jewelry dealer Shay Belhassen said he was sitting with a client at celebrity hot spot Il Pastaio on Thursday afternoon when three armed thieves came up behind him and made their move to swipe his $500,000 Richard Mille timepiece.

“One of them was choking me from the back with a gun to my head, while the other one was grabbing my arm, and the third one was yanking the watch off my hand,” Belhassen told The Post in a phone interview — referring to his RM 11-03 rose gold Flyback Chronograph, a favorite of celebs such as Kanye West and Kevin Hart and tennis ace Rafael Nadal.

“I took a chance and grabbed the gun and wrestled them to the ground. They were trying to pull the trigger,” Belhassen said.

Four shots rang out during the struggle, the jewelry dealer said, and one of the slugs struck a woman in the leg who was sitting at the restaurant with her boyfriend.

“I believe one of [the robbers] got shot while they were struggling with me on the ground,” he said. “The eyewitnesses were saying he ran while holding his stomach. I know while we were fighting on the ground, a couple of bullets shot. I believe one of them hit him.”

He added that he was happy to escape the robbery with his life.

“They were coming to shoot. They didn’t come to play around. There was zero fear in their eyes,” he said.

Richard Mille — the luxury watch brand targeted in an armed robbery outside Beverly Hills hot spot Il Pastaio — is a favorite of celebrities like tennis ace Rafael Nadal, Brazilian soccer star Neymar, martial arts wonder Jackie Chan and actress Natalie Portman.

Friends of the victim said the Mille model ripped off in the Thursday heist that left one woman shot was the RM 11-03 rose gold Flyback Chronograph — which costs a jaw-dropping $500,000, according to KNBC.

The watch features a “skeletonized, automatic winding movement with a variable-geometry rotor,” according to the company’s website.

“Under the bonnet of the RM 11-03 beats a flyback chronograph ready to literally race on the track,” it says.
