Matt Holliday Resigns As Cardinals’ Bench Coach; Joe McEwing Named Replacement

The Cardinals announced Thursday that Matt Holliday has resigned from his position as the team’s bench coach. He’ll be replaced by Joe McEwing, who’s spent the past 15 years on the White Sox’ coaching staff. It’s a surprising announcement, given that Holliday was only hired to the post back in early November. Both Bob Nightengale of USA Today and Katie Woo of The Athletic suggest that Holliday’s decision came down to a matter of wanting to spend more time with his family (Twitter links).

Holliday, 43 this weekend, played in the big leagues from 2004 to 2018, donning a Cardinals uniform for much of that time. It thus made for an exciting return to the franchise when it was reported in November that he would take over the bench coach job that was left vacant when Skip Schumaker left to become manager of the Marlins.

However, with Spring Training now just over the horizon, it appears that Holliday has had a change of heart. Instead of returning to the MLB life of constantly being on the move from roughly January/February through October/November, he will choose a less-nomadic path and spend more time with his family. Holliday has four children with the eldest of those four, Jackson Holliday, having just been selected by the Orioles with the first overall pick in the 2022 draft.

As for McEwing, 50, he spent some time with the Cardinals as a player back in 1998 and 1999. He went on to suit up for the Mets, Royals and Astros. He’s since transitioned into coaching, starting in the minor leagues of the White Sox system in 2008. He jumped up to the big league team for the 2012 season, spending time as third base coach and bench coach through 2022.

Raiders bench Derek Carr for Jarrett Stidham: What’s next for QB, plus logical 2023 landing spots

Though unlikely to make the 2022 NFL playoffs, the Raiders are not mathematically eliminated from contention entering Week 17 against the 49ers. Even so, coach Josh McDaniels is making a change at quarterback, announcing Wednesday that Derek Carr has been benched for backup Jarrett Stidham for the remainder of the year. McDaniels left the door open for a QB swap after Week 16’s narrow loss to the Steelers, and now it’s official: Carr is out as Las Vegas’ signal-caller, and perhaps for good.

“We think it’s an opportunity to evaluate a younger player who hasn’t had much time to play,” McDaniels told reporters. “Talking to Derek, who was great, he understands the scenario that we’re in (and is) very supportive. … There’s a lot to be sorted through once the season’s over.”

Per NFL Media, Carr will step away for the final two games of the regular season to avoid distractions. He will not practice, and will be listed as “not injury related.”

A three-time Pro Bowler who has thrown for 3,522 yards, 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions this year, Carr had started started 91 consecutive games for the Raiders, the longest active streak by any QB in the NFL. The veteran just this offseason signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension tying him to Las Vegas through 2025, and was a catalyst for the team’s blockbuster acquisition of wide receiver Davante Adams. But he’s been less efficient than usual under McDaniels, struggling to elevate a mercurial offense, and finish games in which Las Vegas has led, during a 6-9 start.

Stidham, 26, was acquired in a swap of draft picks with the Patriots, McDaniels’ former team, this spring. A fourth-round pick of New England in 2019, he’s spent all four of his NFL seasons under McDaniels, appearing in eight games with the Pats. While he doesn’t necessarily project as the Raiders’ QB beyond 2022, it’s fair to say the same about his predecessor.

Despite his lucrative new deal, Carr, 31, can be released or traded without financial penalty after the season, instantly saving the Raiders approximately $30M. The safe bet, now that he’s been pulled from the lineup after less than a full year as McDaniels’ QB1, is that Las Vegas will, in fact, part ways with the former second-round pick this offseason. Carr has been at least an average starter for much of his career, often drawing high marks for his leadership amid multiple regime changes, but he’s also logged just a single playoff appearance in almost a decade in silver and black.

In the event the Raiders explore an upgrade, with current Buccaneers QB and longtime McDaniels partner Tom Brady among the splashiest possibilities, where might Carr end up in 2023? Keeping in mind that the veteran has a no-trade clause that could allow him to control his fate, here’s an early rundown of logical suitors:

Rams’ Baker Mayfield comes off bench, wins debut on 98-yard drive

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Not long after Baker Mayfield led the Los Angeles Rams to a 17-16 comeback victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night, Sean McVay stood at the podium and laughed.

“Just like we drew it up,” McVay said.

The Rams won the game to snap their six-game losing streak in spectacular fashion, led by Mayfield, who was playing two days after he was claimed off waivers. Mayfield came off the bench after Los Angeles’ first series, replacing starting quarterback John Wolford.

After the Rams had trailed by 13 points in the fourth quarter, Mayfield led the team on a 98-yard game-winning drive, ending with a 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Van Jefferson with 10 seconds remaining.

“I don’t know if you can write it any better than that,” Mayfield said. “Obviously we’d like to be a little bit more stress free, but it’s a pretty damn good story, I’ll be honest with you.”

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the 98-yard drive was the longest go-ahead touchdown drive that began in the final two minutes over the past 45 seasons.

“You can’t say enough about Baker Mayfield and the leadership, the resilience [and] the competitiveness,” McVay said. “And what a quick study. I mean, he just got here five minutes ago and figured out a way to be able to do some special things tonight.”

Mayfield said the past three days were “pretty hectic,” as he went from Carolina on Monday to playing in Los Angeles on Thursday night.

“Some tough decisions, but everything happens for a reason,” Mayfield said. “Right now I’ve just got a lot of emotions, but I’m really, really blessed and I’m really thankful right now, especially just the guys here that welcomed me in and helped me do the crash course here.”

The Rams trailed 16-3 after Daniel Carlson’s third field goal with 12:20 to play, but Mayfield led a 75-yard drive capped by Cam Akers’ touchdown run with 3:19 to play.

After stopping Derek Carr and the Raiders at the 2-minute warning, the Rams found themselves in a precarious situation when AJ Cole dropped a 64-yard punt at the Rams 2. With no timeouts, Mayfield led the Rams downfield and got to the Raiders’ 23 with 15 seconds left. Mayfield then connected with Jefferson in the back corner of the end zone.

On the winning play, Mayfield said he was “completely shocked” to see the Raiders line up in press coverage with 15 seconds left.

“I really thought they were going to pop out and play zone,” he said. “But they just stayed with it, and I saw the weakside safety stay down, and Van’s a great go-ball runner, go up and get it and he won off the line and did a good job.”

Mayfield completed 15 of 20 passes in the fourth quarter, the second-most completions in any quarter of his career, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

A former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick, Mayfield was asked where Thursday night’s comeback win with his new team ranked among his career highlights.

“This is up there to be honest with you,” he said on the Amazon broadcast. “I didn’t think it was going to play out like this, but I am sure happy we covered the two-minute operation, my goodness.”

Mayfield is 0-22 in his career as a starter when trailing by 13 or more points, but this was the second time he has led a 13-point comeback off the bench. He also erased a 14-0 deficit in his NFL debut in 2018.

Despite starting the game, Wolford didn’t attempt a pass. It is the third time in the past 10 seasons that a team’s starting quarterback did not attempt a pass, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Mayfield has now played for three teams in his first five seasons, making him just the second player taken No. 1 overall in the common draft era (since 1967) to do so.

Royals hire Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as manager

The Kansas City Royals have hired Matt Quatraro as their new manager, the team announced Sunday.

Quatraro has been a longtime member of the Tampa Bay Rays organization, most recently serving as their bench coach, a job he took in October 2018. He replaces the fired Mike Matheny.

“I already knew the talent on the roster and how great the fans in Kansas City are, and the interview process convinced me that the terrific things I’d heard about the organization’s culture are true,” he said in a statement. “I can’t wait to get started, and for my family to get to Kansas City and be part of that community.”

The 48-year-old Quatraro was an eighth-round draft pick of the Rays in 1996 and went on to play seven minor league seasons, mostly at catcher, with the organization.

After wrapping up his playing career, he served as a coach in Tampa Bay’s farm system before joining Terry Francona’s staff in Cleveland as assistant hitting coach in 2014. He then returned to the Rays in 2018 as their bench coach.

Quatraro was chosen by Royals general manager J.J. Picollo, who took over as head of the club’s baseball operations after the firing of longtime front-office executive Dayton Moore.

Picollo, along with Royals owner John Sherman, had said they wanted a forward-thinking manager who was more data-driven than those of the past. They got exactly that in the 48-year-old Quatraro, who had been a hot commodity in recent seasons, interviewing with the Mets and A’s last season for their manager jobs.

“We are extremely excited to have Matt leading our club and core of talent,” Picollo said. “Matt has great experiences throughout his career that have prepared him for this. He thoroughly impressed us all during our interview process and is clearly respected across the industry. We are looking forward to working alongside Matt to bring winning baseball to our great fans.”

Kansas City fired Matheny following a disappointing 65-97 season. He was 165-219 in his three seasons leading the team.

The Royals had eyed 2022 as a turnaround campaign, but they were plagued by poor pitching, struggles from young position players and a lackluster group of veterans and finished last in the AL Central, 27 games behind the Guardians.

Pitching has played a large role in their woes of recent years. They had the fourth-worst ERA and the worst WHIP by far of any staff in the majors this season. Pitching coach Cal Eldred was fired at the same time as Matheny.

Patriots bench Mac Jones for Bailey Zappe in second quarter, immediately find offensive life vs. Bears

USATSI

Mac Jones returned to the field Monday night for the Patriots, making his first start since exiting Week 3 with a high-ankle sprain. It did not last long. Struggling out of the gate against the Bears, the former first-round draft pick received a chorus of boos from the Gillette Stadium crowd after throwing an interception in the second quarter. On New England’s next drive, Jones was promptly benched in favor of rookie backup Bailey Zappe, who responded with an immediate touchdown drive to ignite the offense.

Zappe, 23, has become something of a fan favorite and league-wide sensation in his first year with the Patriots. Taking over under center in Week 4 after veteran backup Brian Hoyer suffered a concussion while replacing Jones, the fourth-round Western Kentucky product flashed poise and efficiency in back-to-back victories as an interim starter. Jones, meanwhile, appeared hesitant in the pocket during his first snaps since suffering the ankle injury, finishing Monday’s game 3 of 6 for 13 yards and a pick.

Jones was officially pulled from the game with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. He’s now thrown just two touchdowns compared to six interceptions on the year, after a relatively promising 2021 debut as the team’s first-time full-timer. Zappe, on the other hand, has been sharp off the bench, helping pull New England within three points of the Bears thanks to his first drive.

Jones had taken the majority of practice reps in the lead-up to Monday’s game, per reports, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick previously left the door open for Zappe to remain the team’s starting QB even after Jones returned to full health.

Lakers’ Russell Westbrook cites coming off bench for hamstring strain

SAN FRANCISCO — Russell Westbrook said he “absolutely” believes that Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham’s decision to bring him off the bench in L.A.’s preseason finale could have caused the hamstring strain he suffered that night.

“I’ve been doing the same thing for 14 years straight,” Westbrook said following the Lakers’ 123-109 loss to the Golden State Warriors in their regular-season opener Tuesday night. “Honestly, I didn’t even know what to do pregame. Being honest, I was trying to figure out how to stay warm and loose. … That’s something I just wasn’t accustomed to.”

Westbrook was back in the starting lineup against the Warriors — playing with the first unit for the 1,005th time in 1,022 career games — after being limited in the days leading up to it because of his hamstring injury.

He played just five minutes in the exhibition loss to the Sacramento Kings on Friday. He alluded to being able to play more but choosing not to because, “I wasn’t going to risk it in a preseason game.”

Westbrook played 31 minutes against Golden State and finished with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting, 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal and four turnovers. His plus-minus rating of minus-six was better than that of both LeBron James (-10) and Anthony Davis (-21).

Ham said he wanted Westbrook’s approach to competition to jolt his team from the opening tip.

“You want to start the game off the right way in terms of your energy and being in attack mode, and no one better than him,” said Ham, who spoke to reporters before Westbrook did following the game. “I mean, it’s what we have, and we got some key guys hurt. It’s Game 1, give them a chance to go out and compete at the highest level. I thought he was solid. I thought he was solid. A couple possessions I wish I can get back, but overall, I thought he was solid.”

Before the contest, Ham said he wanted to “establish” a consistent starting unit.

“We don’t want to be one of those teams,” he said, “where teams are swaying according to who their opponent is starting.”

However, asked whether that meant he would stick with his opening-night starters for a stretch of time moving forward, Ham would not commit.

“We’ll see,” he said. “I’m a day-by-day guy.”

Davis said after the game that Westbrook’s bench role against the Kings was merely experimentation.

“I don’t think he was ever out of [the starting group],” Davis said. “I think it was a look [at a different rotation] in Sac.”

It was only the 22nd regular-season game that Davis, Westbrook and James played together since L.A. traded for Westbrook in the summer of 2021. The loss on Tuesday dropped their record together to 11-11. Yet Davis and James were encouraged.

“I think we played well,” Davis said. “We wanted to come out and everybody be aggressive. We didn’t want to — I think last year at times we were playing selfless, like, ‘Here [you take it].’ … It took away our aggression. At certain moments throughout the game, one of us three were aggressive, and it worked out for it to look good.”

As James added, “I thought we all just kind of played free. And it resulted in all three of us pretty much being efficient from the floor.”

TNT analyst Charles Barkley didn’t see it the same way.

“You know how I feel about Russell Westbrook,” Barkley said at halftime of the broadcast. “I admire him. I respect him. It’s time for the Lakers to move him. They have taken all his joy out of life and basketball. … This guy used to be so exuberant and play with great energy and great emotion, I think the wear and tear mentally last year, starting this year. … And the thing is, he’s going to get the blame no matter what, because the Lakers ain’t a championship contender. … I think he needs a fresh start, I think the Lakers need a fresh start, because they’re not contenders.”

Westbrook was asked about Barkley’s comments and whether he has lost joy for the game since joining the Lakers.

“You know, man, I’m super blessed and leaning a lot on my faith,” Westbrook said. “So, I have a lot of great friends and family, good people in my corner that support me through thick and thin, and when I have God in my corner, it doesn’t really matter what happens outside of that. I stay on course, stay focused, stay locked in. That’s all I can ask.

“Everything else that comes around it, I’ll continue doing what I’m doing, stay locked in on my craft and everything else will take care of itself.”

NFL Week 6 overreactions and reality checks: Patriots should bench Mac Jones? Jets a playoff team?

Week 6 in the NFL was as unpredictable as ever, as a changing of the guard seems to be upon us in the league. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are both .500 or worse this late in the season for the first time since 2012, and the New York teams are a combined 9-3.

The Giants are 5-1 for the first time since 2009, while the Jets have their best start to a season since 2015. The Jets matched their win total from last season while the Giants passed it — in just six games. The Packers have lost consecutive games in the regular season for the first time in four years and suffered their worst loss ever under Rodgers at Lambeau Field.

Plenty of overreactions are in store for Week 6. Let’s see if these are deserved or need to be dialed down a bit.

The Bills will get home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs

Overreaction or reality: Reality

Sunday’s win over the Chiefs wasn’t big in determining the Super Bowl favorite coming out of the AFC, but the road to the Super Bowl will likely be going though Buffalo. The Bills defeated the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium and have pulled off wins in two straight one-score games, so that hex on the Super Bowl contenders is gone.

Buffalo is the only one-loss team in the conference and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over Kansas City. The Bills are the clear favorite in the AFC East and own a two-game lead on the Dolphins and a one-game lead over the emerging Jets. They also beat the Ravens earlier this year (and Baltimore is 3-3 after six games).

The road to the Super Bowl in the AFC looks like it’ll go through Orchard Park in January. That’s a scary thought.

Injuries are going to cost the 49ers a playoff berth

Overreaction or reality: Overreaction

Here’s the biggest issue with the 49ers. How many injuries can this team withstand? On San Francisco’s defense, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw are the only two starters that didn’t suffer an injury during Sunday’s loss to the Falcons, nor had an injury prior to the game.

Charvarius Ward left the game with a groin injury. Talanoa Hufanga had to be evaluated for a concussion (but did return), and Samson Ebukam left with a leg injury (he returned as well). Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, Emmanuel Moseley, Jimmie Ward, and Azeez Al-Shaair all missed the game with various injuries.

The 49ers defense didn’t overcome their injuries in the loss to the Falcons, but this team has the depth to withstand the injuries (and have through the majority of the year). San Francisco will eventually get some of these players back and make a run at the NFC West.

Overreaction or reality: Reality

Zappe has made two starts with the Patriots, and New England has averaged 33.5 points per game and 381.5 yards per game in those starts. They are also 2-0 in the two starts under Zappe. The fourth-round rookie went 24 of 34 for 309 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday’s win over the Browns, actually finding both his tight ends (Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry) six times for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Not only did the Patriots throw for 301 yards, but they were 7 of 14 on third down and 2 of 3 in goal-to-go situations. Zappe has four touchdowns to one interception and a 111.4 passer rating this season, with a 72.9% completion rate. He’s the first rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl era to win and post a 100-plus passer rating in each of his first two starts.

Bottom line: Zappe has done more than enough to warrant another start (at least). The Patriots offense is better with him at quarterback.

The Jets are a threat to make the playoffs

Overreaction or reality: Reality

New York is 4-2 and just handed Green Bay its largest loss under Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field. Breece Hall already looks like one of the most explosive players in the NFL, and the defense is shining with D.J. Reed, Sauce Gardner, and Quinnen Williams leading the way.

The Jets have the look of a playoff team, finding different ways to beat opponents every week. The offensive line does a good job of protecting Zach Wilson, and the defense continues to improve, allowing under 300 yards for the third straight week.

If the AFC had to pick seven teams to make the playoffs, the Jets would be one of them.

The Colts wide receivers are good enough to get them to the playoffs

Overreaction or reality: Reality

Indianapolis had its best game from its wide receivers in Sunday’s win over Jacksonville. Michael Pittman finished with 13 catches for 134 yards to lead the way, but the biggest contribution came from rookie Alec Pierce. The second-round pick caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan with 17 seconds left to get the Colts to 3-2-1 on the year, the fourth straight week he’s had a significant contribution to the offense.

Parris Campbell also had seven catches for 57 yards and a touchdown. Ryan’s chemistry is growing with his wideouts, as he’s thrown for 996 yards and five touchdowns over the past three weeks. If Sunday’s game carries over, the Colts may not have to add another wide receiver at the trade deadline.

Pittman, Pierce, and Campbell are good enough.

Vikings are a Super Bowl contender

Overreaction or reality: Overreaction

Hard to not be in favor of a 5-1 start, especially since the Vikings have built a commanding lead in the NFC North. Minnesota is one of just three five-win teams in the NFC and four five-win teams in the entire NFL. The Vikings did lose to the Eagles, but that was over a month ago. They haven’t lost since.

Minnesota certainly capitalized on Miami’s miscues, as a Jaylen Waddle bobbled ball led to a Harrison Smith interception and an eventual field goal. Waddle’s fumble after a long catch late led to another Miami turnover — taking more potential points off the board in a 17-16 game. The Vikings got 10 points off Waddle’s miscues.

The Vikings are a good team, albeit in a mediocre division. They are not in the Super Bowl contending tier yet.

Saints have to commit to the run game more

Overreaction or reality: Reality

What the Saints were able to do on the ground against the Bengals was impressive. New Orleans rushed for 228 yards and averaged 6.7 yards per carry against a Bengals defense that allowed 99.6 rushing yards per game and just one rushing touchdown on the year.

Without their top three wide receivers, the game plan should have been easy for the Bengals defense. A healthy Alvin Kamara ran for 99 yards while Mark Ingram added 46 on the ground and Taysom Hill had 39. Rookie Rashid Shaheed also had a 44-yard touchdown run.

Even when the playmaking pass catchers come back, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. should dial back the pass and commit to the run more. The Saints are a better running team than they might have thought.

Brian Daboll is the Coach of the Year

Overreaction or reality: Reality

The Giants are 5-1 and already have more wins then they had all of last year. A healthy Saquon Barkley helps, but New York is winning with Daniel Jones and a subpar offensive line. Beating the Ravens is another excellent win for an emerging Giants team that’s starting to believe they are more than just a Cinderella story.

This is the first time since 2009 the Giants have started 5-1 or better in the Super Bowl era. Daboll is the first Giants coach since Allie Sherman in 1961 to begin his career 5-1. Jones has four game-winning drives as New York is 5-1 in one-score games — the only team this season to have each of its games be decided by eight points or less.

Daboll might not be just the Coach of the Year. He might be one of the best in the league — already.

Mike Tomlin is still a top-five coach in this league

Overreaction or reality: Reality

There’s a reason why Tomlin has never had a losing season in his 15 seasons of being a head coach — upsets like Sunday’s over the Buccaneers are why. Tomlin lost starting quarterback Kenny Pickett (concussion), but Mitchell Trubisky found a way to record a 142.4 passer rating against a Buccaneers defense that allowed just 193.7 passing yards per game entering the contest.

The Steelers secondary didn’t have its top three cornerbacks and Minkah Fitzpatrick, yet held Tom Brady to just one passing touchdown. The Buccaneers also went just 4 of 14 on third down and 1 of 4 in the red zone.

Pittsburgh outplayed Tampa Bay after getting blown out by Buffalo last week. That’s all Tomlin.

Kliff Kingsbury’s days in Arizona are numbered

Overreaction or reality: Overreaction

Kingsbury isn’t close to getting fired yet, but something needs to be done with this offense. The Cardinals are 2-4, reside in last place in the NFC West, and were held to another slow start after netting just three points and 142 yards in the first half. Arizona even had a stretch where it had 10 plays for 11 yards.

The Cardinals had just nine points against the 31st-ranked scoring defense in the league and had only 315 yards against the 32nd-ranked defense in yards per game allowed. That’s unacceptable for a team with Kyler Murray on it — and he struggled after going 22 of 37 for 222 yards with an interception.

The hot seat is getting warmer for Kingsbury, but he deserves time to cool it off.

Cooper Kupp is the best receiver in the NFL

Overreaction or reality: Reality

No disrespect to Justin Jefferson, but Kupp continues to produce each and every week behind an offense that still is out of sync. Kupp finished with seven catches for 80 yards to lead the Rams in Sunday’s win over the Panthers, giving him 56 catches for 607 yards and four touchdowns on the year.

With Allen Robinson starting to show some sense of production, Kupp is still being tasked to carry a wide receiver group that’s just him through six games. The task isn’t easy, yet Kupp is on pace for 159 receptions this season — which would set the NFL record.

Kupp — the only 2,000-yard receiver in league history (regular season and postseason) — still deserves his due as the best pass catcher in the game. He’s carrying the Rams right now.
