2022 Belmont Stakes winner: Mo Donegal wins as a 5/2 favorite with a huge burst on the stretch to pull away

Mo Donegal is the winner of the 154th Belmont Stakes in an official time of 2:28.28. This is Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher’s fourth time winning the Belmont.

Pletcher’s previous victories at Belmont Stakes were with Rags to Riches in 2007, Palace Malice in 2013 and Tapwrit in 2017. Saturday was a terrific day at the racetrack for him, as his other trainee in the race, Nest, finished in second place.

“This is my Derby,” owner Mike Repole told NBA Sports after the race. “This has been a dream that I’ve had for 40 years. This is the biggest goal I had in my racing life, and I just accomplished it, and I ran 1-2.”

Repole, born and raised in New York, came close to winning a little more than a decade ago. He was emotional as he talked about finally achieved his dream.

“In 2011, I came in second with Stay Thirsty,” he said. “I watched the replay 150 times. I will no longer watch that replay.”

The odds were in Mo Donegal’s favor, as historically, the betting favorite had won the Belmont Stakes more than 42% of the time. He came into the race as the top pick with 5/2 odds and also had a solid resume in New York, as all three of his previous wins had happened there.

He also had a good teammate in Irad Ortiz. The 29-year-old Puerto Rican jockey has a solid reputation in the Empire State and had won the Belmont Stakes in 2016 with Creator. Ortiz is a three-time Eclipse Award winner, receiving the honor in three consecutive years from 2018 to 2020. Success runs in the family as his brother, Jose Ortiz, won this year’s Preakness Stakes with Early Voting, who did not compete this weekend.

No horses this year took part in all three legs of the Triple Crown. Mo Donegal finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby, but had a much better performance on Saturday. He was in the middle of the pack for a good part of the race, as We the People — the favorite when the morning line odds dropped — took an early lead. Skippylongstocking was in the second position and was trying to take over, but Mo Donegal came up from fifth place and began overtaking his competitors with a strong push toward the end.

“I’m always going to be Mike from Queens,” Repole said. “This is New York’s biggest race, and to win it here, with family, friends, I’m sort of overwhelmed.”

Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike finished sixth. This is the first time ever that three different horses have won the Triple Crown races in four consecutive years.

Belmont Stakes 2022 predictions, best bets: Expert picks for win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, superfecta

For the first time since 1926, the 2020 Belmont Stakes was run at a shorter distance than its traditional mile-and-a-half length. COVID-19 not only led to the temporary shuttering of numerous tracks, but it also created disruptions in horses’ training schedules and support staff’s ability to work around each other. The decision was made to run the Belmont Stakes at a more standard length of a mile-and-one-eighth that year. Tiz the Law, a horse sired by Constitution, won two years ago. Constitution also sired the 2022 Belmont Stakes favorite, We the People, who is 2-1 in the 2022 Belmont Stakes odds. Other top entries in the 2022 Belmont Stakes lineup include Mo Donegal (5-2), Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (7-2) and Creative Minister (6-1). Post time for the Belmont 2022 is 6:44 p.m. ET on Saturday. With so much to consider while making your 2022 Belmont Stakes picks, a little expert help can go a long way.

While no one was in attendance for the 2020 running of the Belmont Stakes, the record for attendance was set in 2004, when 120,139 watched as Smarty Jones went for the Triple Crown. No horse in this year’s field is a Triple Crown contender, but the crowd at Belmont Park for the Belmont Stakes 2022 will be a smaller one. Only 50,000 fans will be admitted to this year’s race due to the space needed for the construction of the New York Islanders’ new stadium, UBS Arena. The last game played in the Islanders’ old stadium, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, came in 2015, the same year American Pharoah won the Triple Crown.

Given all the history, there’s a method to picking which horses to focus on for exacta, trifecta and superfecta bets in a Belmont Stakes like this, and SportsLine expert Jody Demling knows what it is. He can help you make the best 2022 Belmont Stakes picks possible.

A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling enters the Belmont Stakes 2022 having nailed the winner of this race three of the last four years. He hit the exacta, trifecta, and superfecta in last year’s Belmont Stakes with Essential Quality. Two years ago, Demling said Tiz the Law was clearly the class of the field, and Barclay Tagg’s horse pulled away for a convincing 3 3/4-length victory. In 2018, he was all over Justify, jockey Mike Smith, and trainer Bob Baffert to make horse racing history at Belmont Park. The result: Justify became just the 13th Triple Crown winner ever, and anyone who followed Demling’s lead cashed in too.

He’s coming off a major heater in 2020: At one point, he picked the winners of six straight races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Demling is at his best in the biggest horse races in the world. He has hit 10 of the last 14 Derby-Oaks doubles at Churchill Downs. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both races all but four times in the last 14 years. He’s also called nine of the last 18 Preakness winners, keenly understanding when the Kentucky Derby winner was poised for victory or a massive upset, and nailed this year’s Preakness trifecta. Anyone who has followed him is up huge. Now, he’s sharing all of his 2022 Belmont Stakes bets here.

Top 2022 Belmont Stakes expert picks

Here’s a refresher on these types of bets from SportsLine’s Jody Demling:

Belmont Stakes Exacta: Pick the first- and second-place finishers in the correct order. A $2 exacta returned $15.00 at the 2021 Belmont Stakes with Essential Quality and Hot Rod Charlie.

Belmont Stakes Trifecta: Pick the first-, second- and third-place finishers in the correct order. A $1 trifecta returned $21.70 at the 2021 Belmont Stakes with Essential Quality, Hot Rod Charlie and Rombauer.

Belmont Stakes Superfecta: Pick the first-, second-, third- and fourth-place finishers in the correct order. A $1 superfecta returned a colossal $60.70 at the 2021 Belmont Stakes with Essential Quality, Hot Rod Charlie, Rombauer and Known Agenda.

While Demling has no quibbles with the favorite status of We the People (2-1) and Mo Donegal (5-2), he plans to hold tickets with Creative Minister (6-1) and Nest (8-1), as well as a double-digit underdog who could really spice up the payouts. You can see his picks here.

NYC police shooting: Video shows 2 NYPD cops shot by suspect during struggle in Belmont, Bronx

BELMONT, Bronx (WABC) — One of two NYPD officers shot and wounded by a suspect in the Bronx Wednesday night was released from the hospital just before noon Thanksgiving Day.

There was a sense of gratitude that everyone involved in the wild shooting survived — but also a sense that something has to change.

Fellow officers lined up to greet NYPD Officer Alejandra Jacobs, who suffered two gunshot wounds to her arm.

The other officer, Jacobs’ partner and an eight-year veteran, remains hospitalized and is expected to survive, as is the 23-year-old suspect.

The incident happened on East 187th Street and Beaumont Avenue in the Belmont section around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the officers barely had the chance to speak to him before he opened fire.

According to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea, police received a 911 call about a man with a gun at the location.

Two officers responded, and surveillance video shows what happened when they arrived.

The officers confront the suspect, whom they recognized from the description they were given. The suspect reached for a gun and a struggle ensued, during which the suspect fired at the officers.

The female officer returned the gunfire, firing five times, and the suspect was shot three times. All three were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital.

‘We have lot to be thankful for,” the commissioner added, citing no loss of life in the incident.

Police recovered the suspect’s gun at the scene. He’s identified as Charlie Vasquez of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. He has several prior arrests including for weapons possession.

They said the gun was reported stolen from Georgia.

“It comes down to accountability, you should not feel comfortable carrying an illegal firearm,” NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison said. “And that’s what it comes down to. In New York, we have some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but we’ve got to make sure those who choose to carry these illegal firearms are held accountable for what they are doing.”

Chicago shooting: 2 young girls shot, 1 killed, in Belmont Central on Northwest Side, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) — A 7-year-old girl is dead and her 6-year-old sister is “fighting for her life” after they were shot Sunday in Belmont Central on the city’s Northwest Side, according to Chicago police.

The two girls were in a vehicle parked on the street just before 3 p.m. in the 6200 block of West Grand Avenue when they were both shot, police said.

The 6-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and right armpit, and was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in stable condition.

The 7-year-old was also shot in the chest, but later died at the hospital, officials said.

“To say I’m saddened and outraged is an understatement,” said Chicago Police Chief Brian McDermott. “I only hope every resident in this city is as angry, saddened and outraged as I am at this time.

Police said the girls are sisters and don’t believe they were the intended targets.

WATCH: CPD gives update on Belmont Central shooting of 2 young sisters

Area Five Detectives are investigating and working to collect any surveillance video in the area.

A $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction, Community activist Andew Holmes said Sunday.

“It’s not about the money it’s just about catching these individuals before they strike and hit another child. Stop killing our children,” Holmes said.

More than 250 children have been shot and 32 killed so far this year in Chicago, according to police data.

“Too many young people have lost their lives to senseless gun violence in Chicago,” McDermott said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or share tips anonymously to CPDtip.com.
