Prince Harry defends William baldness comments in new interview

Bye to brotherly love.

Prince Harry is defending the comments he made calling attention to his brother Prince William’s “alarming” baldness in his forthcoming memoir, “Spare.”

The Duke of Sussex, 38, appeared on “60 Minutes” Sunday night and spoke to Anderson Cooper about his contentious relationship with his older brother, 40.

Cooper read the beginning of “Spare,” in which Prince Harry makes a dig at Prince William’s hair loss, and called it “cutting.”

“I don’t see it as cutting at all,” the Invictus Games founder replied.

“My brother and I love each other. I love him deeply.”

The royal also told Cooper that there’s been “a lot of pain” between the brothers — “especially the last six years” — and that they no longer speak regularly.

In “Spare,” Prince Harry describes the moment following the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip, when he noticed how his sibling’s physical appearance had changed in recent years.

“I looked at Willy, really looked at him, maybe for the first time since we were boys. I took it all in: his familiar scowl, which had always been his default in dealings with me, his alarming baldness, more advanced than my own; his famous resemblance to Mummy, which was fading with time,” Harry writes.

Prince Harry also revealed the brothers are no longer in touch.

The palace told Page Six it would not be commenting on any allegations made in the bombshell book, which is officially out on Tuesday.

Is this the lip gloss from Kate and Meghan’s ‘awkward moment?’

Prince Harry didn’t gloss over a dramatic makeup moment in his explosive new memoir, “Spare.”

In the forthcoming bombshell-filled book, the Duke of Sussex recalls an “awkward moment” when Meghan Markle allegedly asked to borrow Kate Middleton’s lip gloss — a practice he dubbed an “American thing.”

Could the lip gloss in question be the same one Kate Middleton swiped on at Wimbledon in 2019?

“Kate, taken aback, went into her handbag and reluctantly pulled out a small tube,” he wrote. “Meg squeezed some onto her finger and applied it to her lips. Kate grimaced.”

Harry, 38, added that the alleged incident — which he said occurred prior to the Sussexes’ and the Waleses’ Royal Foundation Forum appearance in 2018 — was something the couples “should’ve been able to laugh about,” but the press “sensed” it was “something bigger.”

As for which lip product the women supposedly shared? Perhaps Middleton passed over a tube of one of her go-to pout-perfecting products, Clarins Natural Lip Perfector ($28).

After all, the product seems to be a purse must-have for Middleton, who was seen swiping on the Rose Shimmer shade of the lip gloss — which comes in a squeeze tube — at Wimbledon in 2019, marking a rare moment of caught-on-camera primping.

She’s far from the first royal to love Clarins cosmetics, however, as Queen Elizabeth is said to have commissioned the brand to create a shade of red lipstick to match her coronation robes.

While Markle also attended Wimbledon in 2019, perhaps she was sticking with her own lipstick go-tos that time around; after all, unlike royals, the former actress didn’t have to keep her lips sealed about her favorite products during her “Suits” days.

Her personal go-tos include Fresh Sugar Lip Balm ($25) and Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk ($34), the latter of which is also among Britney Spears’ favorites.

Markle’s style and beauty choices have certainly made headlines since she first entered the royal family, with polarizing sartorial selections including the ripped Mother Tripper Ankle Fray Jeans ($278) she sported during her first public outing with Prince Harry at the 2017 Invictus Games.

Harry also mentioned the much-discussed denim in “Spare,” claiming the pants were palace-approved.

NASA images showcase eerie beauty of winter on Mars

Ice frozen in the soil left polygon patterns on the Martian surface. (NASA, JPL-Caltech, University of Arizona)

Estimated read time: 4-5 minutes

ATLANTA — Mars may seem like a dry, desolate place, but the red planet transforms into an otherworldly wonderland in winter, according to a new video shared by NASA.

It’s late winter in Mars’ Northern Hemisphere, where the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter are exploring an ancient river delta that once fed into Jezero Crater billions of years ago.

As the planet’s main feature, dust also drives Martian weather. Dust usually heralds winter’s arrival, but the planet is no stranger to snow, ice and frost. At the Martian poles, the temperature can dip as low as minus 190 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are two types of snow on Mars. One is the kind we experience on Earth, made of frozen water. The thin Martian air and subzero temperatures mean that traditional snow sublimates, or transitions from a solid directly to a gas, before touching the ground on Mars.

The other type of Martian snow is carbon dioxide-based, or dry ice, and it can land on the surface. A few feet of snow tend to fall on Mars in its flat regions near the poles.

“Enough falls that you could snowshoe across it,” said Sylvain Piqueux, a Mars scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement from a NASA release. “If you were looking for skiing, though, you’d have to go into a crater or cliffside, where snow could build up on a sloped surface.”

So far, no orbiters or rovers have been able to see snowfall on the red planet because the weather phenomenon only occurs at the poles beneath cloud cover at night. The cameras on the orbiters can’t peer through the clouds, and no robotic explorers have been developed that could survive the freezing temperatures at the poles.

Patchy carbon dioxide frost, or dry ice, can be seen inside a crater during winter in the Martian Southern Hemisphere. (Photo: NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona)

However, the Mars Climate Sounder instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter can detect light that’s invisible to the human eye. It has made detections of carbon dioxide snow falling at the Martian poles. The Phoenix lander, which arrived on Mars in 2008, also used one of its laser instruments to detect water-ice snow from its spot about 1,000 miles away from the Martian north pole.

Thanks to photographers, we know snowflakes on Earth are unique and six-sided. Beneath a microscope, Martian snowflakes would likely look a little different.

“Because carbon dioxide ice has a symmetry of four, we know dry-ice snowflakes would be cube-shaped,” Piqueux said. “Thanks to the Mars Climate Sounder, we can tell these snowflakes would be smaller than the width of a human hair.”

Ice and carbon dioxide-based frosts also form on Mars, and they can occur farther away from the poles. The Odyssey orbiter (which entered Mars’ orbit in 2001) has watched frost forming and turning to a gas in the sunlight, while the Viking landers spotted icy frost on Mars when they arrived in the 1970s.

At the end of winter, the season’s buildup of ice can thaw and turn into gas, creating unique shapes that have reminded NASA scientists of Swiss cheese, Dalmatian spots, fried eggs, spiders and other unusual formations.

During winter in Jezero Crater, recent high temperatures have been about 8 F, while lows have been about minus 120 F.

Meanwhile, at Gale Crater in the Southern Hemisphere near the Martian equator, the Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars in 2012, has been experiencing highs of 5 F and lows of minus 105 F.

Seasons on Mars tend to last longer because the planet’s oval-shaped orbit around the sun means that a single Martian year is 687 days or nearly two Earth years.

NASA scientists celebrated the Mars new year on Dec. 26, which coincided with the arrival of the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

“Scientists count Mars years starting from the planet’s northern spring equinox that occurred in 1955 — an arbitrary point to begin, but it’s useful to have a system,” according to a post on the NASA Mars Facebook page. “Numbering Mars years helps scientists keep track of long-term observations, like weather data collected by NASA spacecraft over the decades.”

New Map of the Universe Displays Span of Entire Cosmos With Pinpoint Accuracy and Sweeping Beauty

Compiled from data mined over two decades by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the map was created by astronomers from Johns Hopkins University. It allows the public to experience data previously only accessible to scientists.

The interactive map depicts the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. It is available online, where it can also be downloaded for free.

“Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae, and galaxies, and now it’s our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people,” says map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. “Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like.”

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey is a pioneering effort to capture the night sky through a telescope based in New Mexico. Night after night for years, the telescope aimed at slightly different locations to capture this unusually broad perspective.

The map visualizes a slice of the universe, or about 200,000 galaxies—each dot on the map is a galaxy and each galaxy contains billions of stars and planets. The Milky Way is simply one of these dots, the one at the very bottom of the map. Ménard assembled the map with the help of former Johns Hopkins computer science student Nikita Shtarkman.

Millennial’s beauty startup Social Bella raised over $225 million

When the Covid pandemic was raging in 2020, much of the world was in lockdown and more turned to online shopping.

But Chrisanti Indiana did the unexpected: she expanded her e-commerce business — offline.

Her beauty and personal care e-commerce startup, Sociolla, had just two brick-and-mortar stores in Indonesia in 2019. By the end of 2021, that number grew “10 times” more, she said.

“A lot of people actually told us that it’s a very bold move to actually open an offline presence, while everybody was closing their offline stores [during the pandemic],” she added.

But that was a “well-calculated” move for Social Bella, which operates Sociolla.

We know that this is the time for us to actually prepare … to make sure that after the pandemic, we can serve more and more consumers.

Chrisanti Indiana

Co-founder and CMO, Sociolla

“We know that this is the time for us to actually prepare … to make sure that after the pandemic, we can serve more and more consumers,” she added.

Looking far ahead turned out to be the right move for the 31-year-old. Her online and offline approach transformed her e-commerce startup into a multimillion-dollar beauty conglomerate.

Since 2018, it has raised around $225 million, and drawn an impressive list of investors that include East Ventures, Jungle Ventures, Temasek and Pavilion Capital.

Indiana, the co-founder and chief marketing officer of Social Bella, tells CNBC Make It how she took her Jakarta-based startup to the next level.

Tackling counterfeits

The idea for Sociolla came about in 2015, when Indiana returned home to Jakarta, after studying in Australia.

The makeup junkie realized that in Australia, she had easy access to a wide range of beauty products from international brands. That was a stark contrast to Indonesia.

“There was lot of options for me, but then I came back and there’s basically none,” said Indiana.

“There wasn’t a platform that had it all — I had to find specific sellers on social media, ask friends who can help purchase the product for you [when they are] overseas.”

What made matters worse for her was the online proliferation of counterfeit makeup products that were sometimes selling at “a fraction” of the original’s price.

I still remember vividly in my mind that there’s a lot of like sellers online, especially on social media, that claim their products are 99% authentic. What does that mean, 99% authentic?

“I still remember vividly in my mind that there’s a lot of like sellers online, especially on social media, that claim their products are 99% authentic. What does that mean, 99% authentic?”

Indeed, locally made counterfeits in Indonesia are rife, thanks to cheap labor costs and materials. According to a local report, Indonesian authorities seized illegal cosmetic products worth $9 million in 2018 — twice the previous year’s amount.

Seeing friends buying these products left Indiana perplexed.

“It’s skincare, it’s makeup. It’s something that you put on your skin. It’s just bizarre for me,” she said.

Sociolla has expanded into brick-and-mortar shops. It now has 47 stores in Indonesia and 16 in Vietnam.

Social Bella

Determined to build a space where consumers can get products that are safe and authentic, Indiana teamed up with her brother and friend to launch Social Bella, with a starting capital of $13,000.

“Since we started, we ensure that we only work with authorized distributors or brand owners,” Indiana said.

Building an ‘ecosystem’

Sociolla may have started off as an e-commerce platform, but the trio had bigger dreams.

Social Bella has since gone beyond offline shops — it’s also a distributor for beauty and personal care manufacturers worldwide.

“We become an associate partner for a lot of global brands in Indonesia. We help them not only to distribute their products to Indonesia, but we also help them understand the market,” said Indiana.

On top of that, the business also operates Soco, which Social Bella says is Indonesia’s largest online review service for beauty products. Soco has amassed more than 2.5 million reviews for around 36,000 products, the company added.

Social Bella was founded in 2015 by Chrisanti Indiana, her brother and president Christopher Madiam (left) and CEO John Rasjid (right).

Social Bella

The “beauty journey” for customers goes beyond putting something in their shopping carts and checking out, said Indiana.

“We realized that there’s a lot of touch points that are really important … finding the right products for yourself is not just about going to the store and picking it up. You will make sure that you read the reviews, talk to your friends, or Google first,” she added.

“Soco makes sure that they can access tons of product reviews before they purchase products.”

On top of that, Social Bella also runs Beauty Journal — a lifestyle website, and Lilla, an online retailer for mothers and babies.

That’s all part of building the business “ecosystem,” as Indiana calls it.

We want to make sure that we are scaling up and reaching more and more consumers. If Social Bella becomes a unicorn, it’s a bonus.

“We want to … to serve more and more women, not only in beauty and personal care, but also in other industries.”

The startup appears to be on the right track — it now boasts more than 30 million users across all its business units, said Social Bella, selling an inventory of 12,000 products from 400 brands worldwide.

Indonesia’s next unicorn?

Over the last two years, Social Bella expanded aggressively, growing from just three Sociolla stores in Indonesia in 2020, to 47 stores there and 16 stores in Vietnam today.

While much of the expansion took place during the pandemic, Indiana said that had always been part of the plan for the e-commerce platform, lockdowns or not.

“It’s actually to create a seamless omnichannel experience … because we believe that we are serving the same customer whether she shops offline or online,” the Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia honoree said.

“They can choose to do click-and-collect or … she can also deliver the purchases to her home. It’s making sure that she can shop the way she likes.”

Social Bella aims to serve more female customers.

Han Lay: Myanmar beauty queen who decried junta seeks asylum in Canada

A Myanmar beauty queen who publicly criticized her country’s military junta, and later became stranded at the Bangkok airport, arrived Wednesday in Canada, where she is seeking asylum.

Thaw Nandar Aung, also known as Han Lay, landed in Toronto and said she was going to live on Prince Edward Island, a province off Canada’s Atlantic coast, Reuters reported. It was unclear what her status was, but Han Lay, 23, told Radio Free Asia she was granted permission to stay with the help of Canadian officials and the U.N. refugee agency.

“Everything happened so fast, and I only have a few pieces of clothing,” she told the broadcaster before departing for Canada. But, she said, “I have spoken out for Myanmar wherever I go. Since Canada is a safe place for me, I will have more opportunities to speak out on the issue.”

Han Lay first garnered worldwide attention last year when, at the Miss Grand International beauty pageant in Thailand, she used her time on the stage to speak out against Myanmar’s military rulers.

At the time, the junta, known as the Tatmadaw, had just seized power and anti-military protests were raging. The military and police confronted demonstrators with deadly force. On one particularly bloody day, March 27, security forces killed over 160 protesters.

How Myanmar’s military terrorized its people

That same day, Han Lay was on a stage in Bangkok wearing a traditional white gown as one of 20 finalists in the pageant.

“Today in my country, Myanmar, while I am going to be on this stage, there are so many people dying; more than 100 people died today,” she told the audience and cameras, wiping away tears. “I am deeply sorry for all the people who have lost their lives.”

“Every citizen of the world wants the prosperity of their country and the peaceful environment,” she added. “In doing so, the leaders involved should not use their power and selfishness.”

The speech put Han Lay in the spotlight and also drew condemnation and threats on social media, she said. After the pageant, she stayed in Thailand to avoid potential arrest in her home country, where thousands have been injured or killed since the military takeover. Thousands more are in prison, and in July the military junta executed four pro-democracy activists, including two of the resistance’s most prominent leaders.

But on Sept. 21, after a brief trip to Vietnam, Han Lay was denied entry at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. Thai officials said her Myanmar-issued travel documents were invalid, Reuters reported. She wrote on Facebook the next day that Myanmar police officials were also at the airport and had attempted to reach out to her.

As the world moves on, Myanmar confronts a mounting, hidden toll

“I will refuse to meet with the Myanmar police by using my human right,” she wrote, adding that she had requested help from Thai authorities and the United Nations.

According to Human Rights Watch, the move was “a deliberate political act by the junta to make her stateless.”

“There is no doubt that what transpired was a trap to try to force Han Lay to return to Myanmar, where she would have faced immediate arrest, likely abuse in detention, and imprisonment,” the group’s deputy Asia director, Phil Robertson, said in a statement Wednesday.

He said that governments should be “on guard” against attempts by Myanmar’s military junta to use “similar tactics against overseas dissidents traveling on Myanmar passports in the future.”

“This is hardly the first time repressive Burmese military dictatorships have sought to use their control over Myanmar passports as a weapon against their own people’s rights to travel internationally,” Robertson said.

Slain Georgia woman Debbie Collier remembered as beloved matriarch ‘filled with joy and beauty’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Georgia real estate office manager Debbie Collier’s son is speaking out for the first time after his mother’s shocking death earlier this month, as investigators race to find a suspect.

Jeffrey Bearden, Collier’s son, told Fox News Digital on Saturday that his mother was the kindest, greatest influence on his life and asked for “respect and privacy” as his family deals with the traumatic news of her murder.

“[I] am writing to request respect and privacy during the darkest and most harrowing time for my family,” Bearden wrote. “I have been incredibly hurt and disturbed by some of the reporting and information shared regarding the investigation into my mother’s death.”

Habersham County deputies found Collier’s remains down an embankment on Sept. 11, a day after her husband, Steven Collier, and daughter, Amanda Bearden, reported her missing from neighboring Clarke County. As of Saturday evening, there had been no arrests in the case.

A crime scene report includes gruesome details about her final moments. Investigators found her naked and burned, with “charring” on her abdomen, clutching at a tree down an embankment a quarter mile from her abandoned vehicle, a day after police said she sent her 36-year-old daughter a $2,385 payment using the Venmo app and a bizarre message that suggested she was being held against her will. Investigators however, publicly ruled out both kidnapping and suicide last week.

“I ask that all attention on the tragic story of my mother’s death remain focused on aiding the police investigation,” Jeffrey Bearden said Saturday.

He asked for privacy and for an end to online guesswork until police complete their investigation.

“There is no place for the court of public opinion in the pursuit of justice for my mother, and this speculation continues to be traumatic and hurtful for my family during the most difficult time we have experienced,” he said.

His mother, he said, was an amazing woman.

“I will never be able to fully articulate the loss of my mother and what she meant to me,” Bearden said Saturday. “She was my longest source of love, support, and encouragement. My mother was a very, vibrant and strong soul. She was a person who valued kindness, empathy, and understanding throughout her entire life. She went through life recognizing the beauty and grace in everything she saw and experienced around her.”

Collier worked as a real estate office manager with Carriage House Realty in her hometown of Athens, Georgia. Reached by text message, a colleague deferred questions to the office’s main line, where calls went unanswered Saturday.

DEBBIE COLLIER MURDER: GEORGIA INVESTIGATORS EXECUTED SEARCH WARRANT AT DAUGHTER’S HOUSE, DOCUMENT REVEALS

“Daily life was filled with joy and beauty,” Bearden said. “She spent her time enjoying and making art. She valued listening to, dancing, and singing along with her favorite music. My mother consumed herself with the holidays, as her focus remained on family and the value of being together over a home cooked meal.”

Collier was generous throughout the holidays, he added, and each year, “would shower her family with thoughtful gifts and gestures.”

“My mother was persistent in her love throughout my entire life, and I will persist until she is given the justice she deserves,” Bearden continued. “Our lives have been irrevocably changed. Our grief is here, and our pain is deep. Again, that is why I am asking you to please respect our privacy while we learn to cope and adjust with our loss.”

Police have served several search warrants in the case but have not publicly identified any suspect or person of interest. Anyone with information on Collier’s case is asked to contact Habersham Sheriff’s Investigators Cale Garrison or George Cason at 706-839-0559 or 706-839-0560, respectively.

Jupiter’s unearthly beauty revealed in gorgeous true-color image from Juno flyby

A new image captured by NASA’s Juno Jupiter explorer reveals features in the turbulent atmosphere of the solar system’s largest planet in the same colors a human observer would see them.

Juno (opens in new tab) took the image on July 5, 2022, during its 43rd close flyby of Jupiter (opens in new tab) using its JunoCam instrument. The spacecraft was at a distance of 3,300 miles (5,300 kilometers) from the tops of the gas giant (opens in new tab)‘s clouds when the image was taken, zipping by at 130,000 mph (209,000 kph).

Citizen scientist Björn Jónsson processed the raw data from Juno to create two images. The image on the left hand side shows the view as it would appear to a human observer in Juno’s position. In the image on the right, Jónsson digitally enhanced color saturation and contrast, allowing the intricate structure of the planet’s atmosphere to come to the fore.

Related: NASA spacecraft snaps gorgeous new photo of Jupiter’s moons Io and Europa (opens in new tab)

The color differences in the enhanced image reflect variations in the chemical composition of different parts of Jupiter’s atmosphere (opens in new tab) and reveal the three-dimensional nature of the powerful storms that swirl in the planet’s clouds. The bright “pop-up” clouds in the higher atmosphere are also visible. The image captures a region at a latitude of about 50 degrees north.

Juno, launched in 2011, has been exploring the gas giant since 2016. Circling the planet in a highly elliptical orbit, the probe completes one lap every 43 days, making regular dips close to the planet’s whirling clouds. At its closest, Juno dives down to about 3,100 miles (5,000 km) above the gas giant’s clouds.

Originally scheduled to retire in 2021, Juno will continue its work until at least 2025. JunoCam images are open to citizen scientists to explore, process and help categorize. The images are available on the JunoCam image processing website (opens in new tab) via the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, which built the instrument.
