The CW’s 2022 Cancellations Because of Mergers and Streaming

Image: The CW

For fans of the CW’s original programming, it’s a been rough couple of days. Not only have fan favorites like Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman been abruptly canceled, earlier this week the network bid farewell to other series including Naomi, Charmed, and Roswell, New Mexico. There’ll still be some original content coming out for the 2022-23 season, including Gotham Knights and Supernatural’s prequel series The Winchesters, but for a network that let some of its series go on for quite awhile, the culling has been nothing short of shocking. Add to that the news of Warners and CBS Studios are currently attempting to sell off the network, and it feels safe to say that the network may look pretty different after the 2022-23 season.

The Hollywood Reporter published an investigative piece on Friday detailing the CW’s recent events, and it all basically comes down to money. In 2011, current network owners Warners and CBS Studios struck a partnership with Netflix to bring their series to that platform. (A season of The Flash, for example, would arrive on Netflix a week after its season finale aired.) International rights also contributed to the network’s rise during the 2010s, allowing them to air original series on Friday and Sunday nights, and contributed to the renewals of several shows over the years. Ever wonder why Riverdale keeps on going? It’s because internationally, it’s considered a “Netflix Original” and is treated like a relative big deal on the platform.

But in 2019, Warners and CBS Studios, who are now overseen by Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global thanks to recent mergers, ended their deal with Netflix in favor of their respective streaming systems HBO Max and Paramount+. As a result, the Netflix revenue went away, and their international has been slowly dwindling as the focus has been on building up these newer platforms. Legends, along with other cancelled shows like Charmed and Roswell, were all included in that original Netflix deal. But now that the shows included in that deal are gone, nearly all of the CW series for the 2022-23 season will be available to stream on The CW’s website and their app, CW Seed, which is said to be of “particular interest” to those looking to buy the network.

Fans who’ve spent their time recently taking to social media in the hopes their favorite show will get renewed or picked up by HBO Max or Paramount+ may be out of luck. Further in the Reporter’s piece, they reveal that the streamers couldn’t snatch up a show like Legends or the also canceled Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies due to their being packaged into that Netflix deal. While characters from Legends and Batwoman have a chance to show up in the still airing Superman & Lois or The Flash, that may be as far as they get. By all accounts, and unless those fandoms can work their magic, those shows are dead and gone.

The CW Cancels Batwoman After Three Seasons

The Batwoman showrunner for The CW, Caroline Dries, has announced on Twitter that the DC superhero show will not be returning for a new season.

In a Tweet Dries writes, “Just got the sad news that #Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude.” Dries added that it was an honor to make 51 episodes and thanked the show’s producers, cast, crew, and fans.

Batwoman premiered in 2019 as part of The CW’s DC universe of TV shows. The series originally starred Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, Bruce Wayne’s cousin who takes on a cowl herself to fight crime.

After the first season, Rose announced she would be leaving the show with both Rose and CW offering different reasons for the split. The original plan was to recast Rose’s character but this changed and instead, Batwoman’s title was inherited by a new character, Ryan Wilder played by Javicia Leslie.

Leslie played Wilder’s Batwoman for two seasons, the most recent of which premiered on October 13, 2021. It would end up being the final season for the character.

No reason has been given for why The CW canceled Batwoman, but the news follows reports that CW owners Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global are looking to sell the network. Despite the report, The CW is still exploring new DC shows, including Gotham Knights while renewing others like The Flash for a ninth season.

Warner Bros. TV Hits Back, Reveals Misconduct Allegations Against Ruby Rose After Actor Alleges Toxic Behavior On ‘Batwoman’ Set – Deadline

UPDATE 11:30 AM: Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the CW drama Batwoman, released a strongly worded statement in response to former star Ruby Rose’s scathing attack on the show, the studio and producers this morning. In the statement, Warner Bros. TV corroborates Rose’s claim that she was fired from the show, but says that the action was the result of an internal probe into “complaints about workplace behavior” against the actor. Such an investigation into Rose’s behavior had long been rumored but not officially confirmed until today.

Despite the revisionist history that Ruby Rose is now sharing online aimed at the producers, the cast and crew, the network, and the Studio, the truth is that Warner Bros. Television had decided not to exercise its option to engage Ruby for season two of Batwoman based on multiple complaints about workplace behavior that were extensively reviewed and handled privately out of respect for all concerned.

PREVIOUS 9:20 AM: Ruby Rose has slammed the CW, Warner Bros. TV, Berlanti Productions and top executives on Batwoman in a blistering tirade, alleging toxic behavior on the set that drove her from the show.

It was shocking to fans when Rose abruptly announced her departure in May 2020, leaving her title role as Kate Kane/Batwoman. At the time, there were rumblings that Rose was not happy on the show, but she left with little clarity on her exact reasons for leaving. In her statement at the time, Rose said that “this was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

A couple of months after the exit, Rose revealed more in an interview, saying that returning to work 10 days after a surgery “maybe wasn’t the best idea” and made her “taxing” job “more difficult.”

Now more than a year later, Rose has broken her silence in a scorched earth fashion. In a lengthy post on Instagram stories (you can see her complete post below), Rose unloaded on the reasons why she really left Batwoman. We have reached out to the CW as well as the studio and production company behind the series, Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Prods., for comment.

“Enough is enough,” Rose wrote in her first post, which was addressed to the CW, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries, and Berlanti Prods’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. “I’m going to tell the whole world what really happened on that set. I will come for you so what happened to me never happens to another person again. And so I can finally take back my life and the truth. Shame on you.”

Rose, who had had surgery for a stunt injury she had suffered, included footage of her surgery in her post, saying she was forced to return to work by former head of Warner Bros. TV Peter Roth. She alleged Roth threatened her into returning by claiming she would cost the production “millions” and that “the whole crew and cast would be fired.” She also accused Roth of inappropriate behavior with a bizarre claim that he had asked women to steam his pants while he was wearing them, and alleged he had Rose investigated by a PI after she left the series. Additionally, Rose mounted an attack on former co-star Dougray Scott, who played her father, accusing him of misconduct on set.

Rose also detailed what she described as unsafe working conditions on-set, including serious injuries to a Batwoman crew member who received “third degree burns over his whole body” during production. She also blamed the work conditions for causing serious injuries to other crew members, and slammed the show for “ruin[ing] Kate Kane.”

She concluded by asking fans to stop asking if she would ever return to the show. “I wouldn’t return for any amount of money nor if a gun were to my head. NOR DID I QUIT. I DID NOT QUIT. They ruined Kate Kane and they destroyed Batwoman, not me. I followed orders, and if I wanted to stay I was going to have to sign my rights away. Any threats, any bullying tactics or blackmail will not make me stand down,” she wrote.

Sources close to the situation insist that what Rose paints is a distorted picture of what transpired a year and a half ago, noting that Rose herself was the subject of an internal probe into bad behavior allegations by the studio, with the two sides ultimately opting to part ways. Her claim that she was fired is consistent with what was rumored at the time of her exit, as the studio and the producers at the time allegedly agreed to present the departure as Rose’s decision, a PR practice often used in high-profile talent dismissals.
