College football Week 10 preview: An afternoon in Athens, an evening in Baton Rouge

The college football season comes in two parts.

The first half consists of September and October when teams jockey for position in the Associated Press and coaches’ polls. It’s a time when fun non-conference schedules are played and the cupcakes come to town.

It’s also a time when conference play begins, setting the table for the second half of the season when the battle for conference championships will be settled.

TENNESSEE HEADLINES FIRST COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS, GEORGIA DOWN TO THIRD

And then there’s the second half of the season, when the College Football Playoff committee becomes the focus of the college football world as we inch closer to New Year’s Eve when the semifinals are played.

The first CFP rankings came out Tuesday, and they have provided us with one heck of a college football Saturday.

Let’s look at a few games to be aware of Saturday as the college football season kicks off Week 10.

No. 3 Georgia vs. No. 1 Tennessee – 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS

Would it be an overstatement to call this game “The Game of the Century?”

Maybe. But it sure has a nice ring to it.

The Vols will travel to Athens, Georgia, ranked No. 1 in the CFP rankings for the first time in program history. It’s a classic battle of opposites as Tennessee comes in with the top offense in the country and Georgia will counter with a defense that’s second in the nation in points allowed per game (10.5).

GEORGIA LOSES NFL DRAFT PROSPECT FOR THE YEAR WITH TORN PECTORAL AHEAD OF MARQUEE MATCHUP WITH TENNESSEE: REPORT

Georgia’s defense did take a big hit earlier in the week when outside linebacker Nolan Smith underwent surgery to fix a torn pectoral suffered in last week’s game against Florida.

Smith, a potential first-round NFL Draft pick, leads the Bulldogs with three sacks, seven tackles for loss and and 16 quarterback hurries.

But it’s a defense that is loaded with talent, fourth in the country in yards allowed per game (262.6) and 13th in the country in passing yards (177.1).

LEGENDARY GEORGIA FOOTBALL COACH VINCE DOOLEY DEAD AT AGE 90

“They’re athletic. They can run, all three levels,” Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said Monday when asked about the Georgia defense. “They’re physical on all three levels. They don’t have any busts. They play their assignments extremely well. They make you earn it. It’s a great test for us. You’re going to have to win one-on-ones.

“That’s out on the perimeter. That’s in the offensive line — in the trenches — and you’ve got to be able to sustain drives.”

Georgia will be facing its biggest challenge of the year as the Tennessee offense has been unstoppable under Heupel and Heisman favorite Hendon Hooker.

The big-play Volunteer offense leads the nation in points per game (49.4), yards per game (553.0), pass efficiency (198.52) and yards per pass attempt (11.3). Its running game also averages 199.6 yards per game, good for 24th in the country.

“Tennessee is not necessarily a pass-happy offense,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said, according to ESPN. “They run the ball really well. I think you could say that statistically they have explosive passes. They are a running team that chunks it deep. They do a really good job with explosive pass plays. They commit to the run. There is a toughness there. Their backs run really tough.”

The winner of the game “between the hedges” will set itself up for a berth in the SEC championship game and establish itself as the top team in the country.

It should be a thing of beauty.

No. 10 LSU vs, No. 6 Alabama – 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

All eyes will be on the SEC for the two biggest games of the day as Nick Saban and his one-loss Crimson Tide head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for a matchup with Brian Kelly and the Tigers.

Both teams are trying to hand each other a second loss in the SEC. There are three teams — Ole Miss being the other — tied atop the West with a conference record of 4-1.

Alabama is coming off its bye week after drubbing Mississippi State and is hopeful the week off has allowed quarterback Bryce Young a few extra days of healing for his injured shoulder.

MICHIGAN STATE SUSPENDS FOUR MORE FOOTBALL PLAYERS FOLLOWING TUNNEL INCIDENT WITH MICHIGAN

In the two games since sitting out against Texas A&M, Young has completed 56 of 87 attempts for 704 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions.

The LSU defense will be tasked with trying to stop Young, a dual-threat quarterback, a type of quarterback that the Tigers’ defense has struggled against this year.

Against Tennessee, LSU allowed 239 yards passing and 56 on the ground to Hendon Hooker. Against Florida, it allowed 185 yards passing and 109 on the ground to Anthony Richardson.

But this is why Kelly left South Bend for the Deep South. He wanted a chance to beat the best.

“I want to beat Nick Saban,” Kelly said in the spring. “Who doesn’t want to beat Nick Saban? You know what I mean? I want to play him in the regular season. That’s the standard, right? That’s the standard. Now he’s a conference opponent.”

DEION SANDERS PLANS TO LOCK DOWN JACKSON STATE PLAYERS INSIDE HOUSTON HOTEL IN WAKE OF TAKEOFF’S KILLING

He has his opportunity and will need a big game from quarterback Jayden Daniels to get his first win against Saban in three tries.

Against Ole Miss in Week 8, Daniels threw for two touchdowns and rushed for three more.

On the season, Daniels has thrown for 1,812 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 524 yards and nine touchdowns.

“(Kelly’s teams) always have balance on offense,” Saban said, according to The Tuscaloosa News. “They’re going to run the ball. They got a very good throwing scheme. Utilizing the personnel that they have very, very well.

LSU HEAD COACH BRIAN KELLY ON INSTANT REPLAY: ‘RUINING THE GAME’

“They’ve historically played very well on defense and special teams. It’s typical of what a well-coached team usually does. They’ve gotten to the point where — and all of his teams have been this way — they don’t beat themselves. You’ve got to execute and beat them, and I think that’s got to be the focus for our team.”

No. 13 Kansas State vs. No. 24 Texas – 7 p.m. ET, FS1

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian gets another chance to improve his record in true road games as the Longhorns head to Manhattan, Kansas, looking to avoid their third loss in conference play.

In the two years that Sarkisian has been in Austin, the Longhorns are just 1-6 in true road games, including blowing a 14-point lead against Oklahoma State in Week 8 at Boone Pickens Stadium.

It’s the same team that Kansas State smacked in Week 9, embarrassing the Cowboys 48-0 at home.

AUBURN FIRES FOOTBALL COACH BRYAN HARSIN FOLLOWING LOSS TO ARKANSAS

“I think that we’ve played good football,” Sarkisian said this week, according to ESPN. “I think we’ve got a team that’s committed for this final month of the season, but we have to be cautious not to look down the road. We’ve got to focus on this game, and we’ve got to handle our business this week, and it’s going to be a heck of a game.”

The Wildcats were without starting quarterback Adrian Martinez against Oklahoma State but didn’t skip a beat with backup quarterback Will Howard.

Kansas State rushed for 199 yards in Week 9, 158 of those yards coming from running back Deuce Vaughn.

The Wildcats are 11th in the country in rushing yards per game with 228 yards. Texas is third in the Big 12 in rushing yards allowed per game (121.6).

Martinez has practiced all week, but Kansas State will not make a decision on who will start under center until closer to kickoff.

“We are prepared for both, we have to,” Sarkisian said Monday, according to ESPN. “Obviously the style of player that Adrian Martinez is in the quarterback run game is a real factor in the success they had with him. And then, obviously, Will Howard, his ability to really throw the ball and push the ball down the field.”

Notre Dame vs. No. 4 Clemson – 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC

There were many in the world of college football who disagreed with Clemson’s ranking in the first College Football Playoff poll Tuesday.

And while a win in South Bend, Indiana, certainly won’t quiet all the naysayers, a Tigers win over Notre Dame in primetime surely will prove to some that the Tigers firmly belong in the CFP conversation.

“The biggest thing is not making the game bigger than it is,” Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei said. “It’s a big environment. It’s going to be a night game and all the external factors. I think, at the end of the day, you’ve just got to go out and play football.”

DEION SANDERS GIVES EMOTIONAL SPEECH TO JACKSON STATE AHEAD OF SWAC MATCHUP: ‘WE ARE ALL VALUABLE’

Uiagalelei has been much improved compared to last year, throwing for 17 touchdowns to just four interceptions. But Uiagalelei was benched by head coach Dabo Sweeney in Clemson’s Week 8 win over Syracuse in favor of freshman Cade Klubnik after Uiagalelei committed three turnovers.

“We’re people, and people are not perfect, Sweeney said this week, according to ESPN. “We have moments from time to time. You have to be made of the right stuff to be able to let it help you get better. We’re not 8-0 if it’s not for DJ. He had a bad game, but that’s why you have a team.

“I’m really proud of DJ, and how he’s handled himself and how he’s led. He knows he can’t go play like that. There’s a standard. He’s the ace. You’ve got to go do your job.”

He’ll be facing a Notre Dame team that has improved since its disastrous 0-2 start to the season, winning five of six games in head coach Marcus Freeman’s first season as the helm.

“This is what we do, we play in big games like this,” Freeman said. “It’s not a David vs. Goliath. This is a heavyweight fight. We’ve got a dang good football team.”

Baton Rouge shooting near Southern University injures 11, and 2 are arrested on accessory charges

CNN
 —

Two people have been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured 11 people early Friday at a fraternity house party near Louisiana’s Southern University, part of an investigation that is “very fluid,” police said.

The shooting, coming as the university marked homecoming week, happened shortly before 2 a.m. at the fraternity house just off campus in Baton Rogue, police said.

Nine people were initially reported to have non-life-threatening gunshot wounds; by Friday night, two more people injured in the shooting had come forward, Baton Rouge police Deputy Chief Myron Daniels said, without detailing the conditions of those two.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting investigation, police said. Daryl Stansberry, 28, and Miles Moss, 24, were being held on preliminary charges of accessory after the fact to attempted first degree murder, and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities, Daniels said in a Friday night news conference.

Daniels, who did not take questions, did not elaborate on what the two were accused of doing, or whether police still were looking for anyone accused of firing the shots. The investigation was “ongoing and very fluid,” and more information would come, he said.

“We do have something we have to follow up on,” the deputy chief said.

Investigators, however, “believe this to be an isolated incident,” and “there is no ongoing threat on the campus of Southern University,” Daniels said.

CNN’s attempt to determine whether Stansberry and Moss had legal representation wasn’t immediately successful.

Authorities have not announced a motive in the shooting.

Police asked any witness or partygoer with photos, videos or information relating to the shooting to contact them.

The shooting happened “off campus at a non-university sponsored event,” and “we are keeping anyone affected by this incident in our thoughts,” the historically Black university wrote.

Officials “are continuing to ensure that students, employees, alumni and other visitors to campus are safe during this homecoming weekend,” the university’s statement reads.

Lincoln Riley says he won’t coach LSU, stuns Baton Rouge

STILLWATER, Okla. — A few minutes into Bedlam, during a timeout, a familiar tune came wafting out of the speakers at Boone Pickens Stadium. The melody centered around a city 620 miles away from here, a place among the Louisiana swamps, in the heart of SEC country, amid the oak trees rooted in the soggy ground.

I spent last night in the arms of a girl in Louisiana
And though I’m out on the highway, my thoughts are still with her
Such a strange combination of a woman and a child
Such a strange situation stoppin’ every hundred miles
Callin’ Baton Rouge

This wasn’t necessarily an accident. It was a not-so-subtle jab from one rival, Oklahoma State, to another, Oklahoma, whose coach, Lincoln Riley, was/is at the center of LSU’s search for a head football coach. The same LSU that is located in, of course, Baton Rouge.

About three hours after the tune filled this raucous orange-painted pit of college football, Riley’s team collapsed late in a 37–33 rivalry loss that, if nothing else, lived up to its name. Oklahoma State returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Each team scored a TD after the other muffed a punt. OU forced a fumble that led to a safety. In all, a whopping 23 points were scored off turnovers or special teams miscues.

In the end, the No. 10 Sooners (10–2) gave away a nine-point second half lead, their offense scoring zero points in the second half against the seventh-ranked Cowboys (11–1), who march onward to next weekend’s Big 12 championship game against Baylor with their CFP hopes still firmly alive.

This story should probably be about the Pokes and their magical run this season. They possess one of the nation’s best defenses, an electric quarterback and a high-flying running back. They’re fun to watch. And they’ll be given their due later this week ahead of that meeting with the Bears (10–2)—a rematch of OSU’s 24–14 victory on Oct. 2.

For now, it’s time to call Baton Rouge, where LSU fans, boosters and even some school officials were left completely stunned by Riley’s admission after the game that he is, in fact, not a candidate for their job.

Riley during the 2021 edition of Bedlam.

Alonzo Adams/USA TODAY Sports

“I’m not going to be the next head coach at LSU,” he said when asked about the reports linking him to the gig.

Let’s first get something straight. The reports connecting him to the job—some even claiming he accepted it already—were wholly unsubstantiated and, for the most part, not credible.

However, this writer spent six years in Baton Rouge, five of them covering the football program. Over the last week or so, I have never witnessed the kind of buzz out of that city about one name since the 2015 season, when the university was poised to hire Jimbo Fisher before deciding to keep Les Miles.

Whatever happened between LSU and Riley wasn’t a complete fabrication. Influential boosters and others around the university expected him to be the program’s next leader. After all, how could he turn down a chance to be college football’s highest-paid coach?

If this Silly Season has shown us anything, it’s that money—even resources, recruiting territory and conference affiliation—doesn’t always win out. It’s just not worth it, accepting a job at such a pressure cooker. LSU has fired the last two coaches, each of whom won a national title.

Riley’s decision, if there even was one, wasn’t the first. With three big-time openings available this offseason—LSU, Florida and USC—coaches around the country are standing pat, and getting paid to do so. Mel Tucker at Michigan State. James Franklin at Penn State. At Texas A&M, Fisher got a new contract before the silliness even began.

Most expect Luke Fickell to remain at Cincinnati. Brian Kelly has made it publicly known that he doesn’t plan to leave. Dave Aranda has made a commitment to agree to a new contract at Baylor. Even Kentucky’s Mark Stoops shot down a question about him leaving Big Blue Nation.

Sometimes, it’s just not worth it.

And so what now for the big three programs with open jobs? Iowa State’s Matt Campbell is an attractive option who could make a move. At Florida, Louisiana’s Billy Napier has emerged as the top candidate in a deal that could be finalized soon.

Is Napier now an option for the Tigers? Is Campbell heading to USC?

One thing seems certain: Baton Rouge might have called, but Riley didn’t answer.

Baton Rouge children’s hospital nears capacity, braces for surge in Covid cases ahead of school year

Dr. Trey Dunbar, president of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, said the spike in Covid-19 cases right now is twice what they saw in the pandemic’s initial surge last year.

“We’ve seen over the past couple of weeks a pretty dramatic increase,” Dunbar told CNN by phone Friday. “A good number more of children are requiring hospitalization.”

Dunbar said they are seeing more children sick from a respiratory standpoint and an increase in those who are acutely ill from Covid-19. Many children require breathing support of some kind, whether it be extra oxygen or breathing tubes, he added.

The hospital is currently treating seven Covid-19 patients, but Dunbar said they’ve had anywhere from eight to 12 patients per day. The hospital is up to about six admissions per day with about 50% of those patients going to the ICU, Dunbar said.

“Any time a child is sick, it’s hard. You place it in the context of Covid, it’s hard. Restricted visitation its hard, certainly for younger children. Teenagers can understand what’s going on, younger children might not understand,” Dunbar said.

“There’s still unknown and fear in Covid, in particular what that might mean for a child in the short and long term.”

Dunbar attributes the spike in cases to the Delta variant, which he said is prevalent in the Baton Rouge community, as well as low vaccination numbers statewide.

According to Louisiana’s health department, 90% of the more than 5,000 Covid cases from July 15-21 were people who were not fully vaccinated.

Dunbar said he anticipates an increase in cases when the school year begins in just a few weeks. Though the state’s health department recommends masking in schools, Dunbar said each local district has control.

At West Baton Rouge Schools, masks are recommended but not required for students when they return to classrooms Aug. 9, according to the district’s website.

The East Baton Rough Parish School System said on its website that guidance will be released Aug. 3, just a week before students are scheduled to start school on Aug. 11.

For keeping kids safe at school, Dunbar said students 12-years-old and older should get vaccinated. For students who are ineligible for the vaccine, Dunbar said the answer is masking and social distancing.

In preparing for the anticipated surge, Dunbar said the hospital is actually lucky because many southern hospitals are experiencing staffing shortages. Our Lady of the Lake will be increasing staff and opening new hospital beds.

Dunbar said most children’s hospitals this summer, especially in the south, have also been very busy with RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

“You start with the pandemic for the last 18 months, and then RSV for the last couple of months, it just seems to be one thing after another that’s keeping our teams very busy,” Dunbar said.
