NCAA announces Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker as next president

The NCAA has selected Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker as its next president, succeeding Mark Emmert.

Baker, a Republican who has been governor since January 2015 but will conclude his second term in January, will begin his new post March 1. He played power forward for Harvard’s basketball team during the 1977-78 season, but has no previous collegiate administrative experience. He has spent most of his career in Massachusetts state government but spent a decade in health care administration. The 66-year old Baker holds degrees from both Harvard and Northwestern.

In April, Emmert announced he would be stepping down. He has led the NCAA since November 2010 and in April 2021 had his contract extended through 2025. Emmert will remain in an advisory role until June. Baker said he believes he’s joining the organization at a “pivotal” time for the NCAA, which is in the process of transforming the way it governs college sports due to political and legal challenges to its business model.

“I think it’s worth doing,” Baker said in a news conference Thursday afternoon. “It’s big and complicated, but so have been a lot of the things I’ve done in my life. Most of the time they were absolutely worth doing.”

Linda Livingstone, chair of the NCAA’s board of governors and Baylor University president, helped lead the search for a new president along with six others, including former Duke standout basketball player Grant Hill, now co-owner of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Livingstone said Baker stood out as a candidate because of his track record of building bipartisan consensus during a time when the NCAA is aiming to “engage and motivate” Congress to create federal legislation that will give the NCAA legal clearance to regulate how college athletes are compensated.

“We are excited to welcome Governor Charlie Baker to the NCAA and eager for him to begin his work with our organization,” Livingstone said in a statement. “Governor Baker has shown a remarkable ability to bridge divides and build bipartisan consensus, taking on complex challenges in innovative and effective ways. As a former student-athlete himself, husband to a former college gymnast, and father to two former college football players, Governor Baker is deeply committed to our student-athletes and enhancing their collegiate experience. These skills and perspective will be invaluable as we work with policymakers to build a sustainable model for the future of college athletics.”

Baker’s background in politics and policy fueled his candidacy, as the NCAA has faced several high-profile legal challenges in recent years. In 2021, the NCAA began allowing athletes to profit off of their name, image and likeness, but the rules vary between states as there is no federal policy, despite a desire from athletic directors and major conference commissioners. In a release announcing Baker’s hire, the NCAA noted “untenable patchwork of individual state laws” have limited its authority.

Baker told reporters Thursday that he was not ready to dive into details about some of the specific issues reshaping college sports, such as increased transfers between schools and the evolving ways in which NCAA athletes are allowed to make money. He said his goal will be, in part, to make changes while preserving the part of college sports that he believes is “one of the truly greatest human potential development organizations ever devised.”

Under Baker’s predecessor, Emmert, the NCAA has started to make an effort to shift more power from its central national office in Indianapolis to individual divisions or conferences. Baker said he believes this a good fit for his experience, having spent much of his career working in “distributed decision-making models” of leadership.

“It’s about being a convener and a collaborator of a very large organization that has a lot of points of view and seeking to find those places where people can come together, can agree and can make a case … about what the best way is to ensure we don’t lose this jewel going forward.”

Baker, whose term as governor ends on Jan. 5, said he plans to attend this year’s NCAA convention in mid-January so he can begin building relationships and developing a better understanding of the organization he will soon lead.

Myles Garrett says he’s impressed and not surprised by Baker Mayfield’s performance

Getty Images

Baker Mayfield‘s tenure in Cleveland did not end well, but one of his former teammates is rooting for him after his spectacular comeback on Thursday night.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, who played with Mayfield for four years in Cleveland, said he went to bed on Thursday night with Mayfield’s Rams trailing 16-3 but didn’t doubt Mayfield was capable of bringing the Rams back, which he did in a 17-16 win over the Raiders.

“I’m not going to lie, I didn’t see half of it,” Garrett said, via the Akron Beacon Journal. “I went to sleep at the end of the third. I was like, [16-3], new team, maybe he’ll get them next week. I went to sleep, I woke up. Right before I went to sleep, I was with my [physical therapist] John, I said, ‘Maybe you should stay up. There is a possibility he could bring them back. You let me know in the morning.’ So I wake up and there’s a text waiting on me like, ‘You won’t believe it.’ I said, yeah I will.”

Garrett said he watched the comeback in the morning and was impressed with what Mayfield did.

“I mean, it was [impressive],” Garrett said. “And going back to watch it, he was putting some dimes out there for guys to go get early on in the game and it was just that time until it clicked. So I have nothing against the guy now. I’m hoping for his success wherever he’s at.”

Mayfield becomes a free agent in March, and no one knows where he’ll play next year, but things have started well with his third team, and it’s impressing teammates from his first team.

Baker Mayfield throws game-winning touchdown during Rams debut vs. Raiders on ‘Thursday Night Football’

Baker Mayfield had an inkling that the Rams would request his services after he was released by Carolina earlier this week. Mayfield was so certain that Los Angeles would sign him that he actually booked a flight for Los Angeles before he had officially cleared waivers.

In a performance befitting a Hollywood script, Mayfield led the Rams to an epic 17-16 victory on Thursday night after throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds left. The score capped off a 98-yard drive that saw Mayfield complete several big passes while helping the Rams snap their six-game losing streak.

“This is up there,” Mayfield told Amazon’s postgame crew when asked to compare Thursday night’s win to other notable moments in his career. “Originally, I was angry about having to go through so many coaching changes and learn so many new things, but it sure helped right there. … They put some good plays out there and put me in a good position to win.”

It took three running plays and one possession for Sean McVay to make the switch from John Wolford to Mayfield. Mayfield entered the game with 2:21 left in the first quarter and the Rams trailing 10-0.

“I knew I wasn’t going to start,” Mayfield. “Honestly, we were just seeing how John was going to feel, just how that was going to go and just going to play it out. I was going to be ready no matter what.”

Mayfield went 22 of 35 for 230 yards in his Rams debut. Trailing 16-3 late, Mayfield engineered a 17-play drive that ended with Cam Akers’ 1-yard touchdown run. After the Rams defense forced a quick punt, Mayfield’s 32-yard completion to Ben Skowronek on Los Angeles’ final drive helped set up his game-winning pass to Jefferson.

“To be honest with you, I was completely shocked they lined up in press coverage with 15 seconds left,” Mayfield said of his game-winning touchdown pass. “I really thought they’re going to try to pop out and play zone but they just stayed with it. Their weak side safety stayed down. Van’s a great go ball runner. He won off the line and did a good job.”

On his first play as a Ram, the former Browns and Panthers quarterback zipped a 21-yard completion to Jefferson. Mayfield then had a 6-yard run that helped set up Matt Gay’s 55-yard field goal.

“For him to get here and just do he just did, it just shows how determined and what kind of a guy he is. I’m glad he’s here,” Jefferson told Amazon’s Kaylee Hartung. “He just came in and worked out. He’s only been here for a day. … When he came in we knew he was going to execute.”

Mayfield and the Rams offense didn’t do much in the second or third quarters, but turned it on in the fourth quarter. He had considerable success throwing the ball to Skowronek and Tutu Atwell. Skowronek caught seven passes for 89 yards. Atwell caught five passes for 50 yards after catching just six passes during the season’s first three months.

Mayfield signed with the Rams a day after he was released by the Panthers. Mayfield, who signed with Carolina this past offseason, lost his starting spot after sustaining an injury in Week 5. His last start in Carolina occurred during a Week 11 loss to the Browns, the team he spent the first four years of his career with.

“I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is don’t let the on the field play affect who you are day in and day out,” Mayfield said when asked about the biggest thing he’s learned during his career up to this point. “Be the same guy for your teammates, and that’s been the biggest thing this year that I think I’ve tried to just handle overall. Just try to help out where I can, not letting all that other stuff affect me and roll with the punches. Be who I am and kind of be that leader.

“I love football. I love playing this game and love playing and competing. Just go enjoy it.”

Mayfield did that and then some on Thursday night, and it resulted in a memorable finish that helped his new team stave off playoff elimination.

“It speaks to the culture of the locker room,” Mayfield said of the Rams’ overall performance on Thursday night. “Them coming in here and still trying to compete, even though the record speaks for itself. Just welcoming me in, competing and fighting to the very finish. That says everything you need to know about this place.”
