7 Awesome Google Drive Features You May Not Know About

Google

Many people take Google Drive for granted. You store files there and go get them when you need them. But there’s more to Google Drive than meets the eye. Here are some of those useful features you may have missed.

Find Files With the Advanced Search

The more files you upload to Google Drive, the more you have to look through when you need one. Luckily, you have advanced search options that make the task easier.

RELATED: How to Quickly Search Google Drive

Enter a keyword or phrase into the Search in Drive box at the top of the main page. Then, click the Show Search Options icon on the right side of the search box.

You’ll see many options you can use to find your file. Choose the file type or owner, use keywords within the file or file name, pick the location, select a date-modified option, or use one of the other fields you see.

Select “Search” and then view your results. If you know which folder a file is in, you can also perform a search directly in a Google Drive folder.

Link Directly to Files

Another handy Google Drive feature is obtaining a direct link to your file. You can do this without even opening the file. Then, save it to your notes for quick access or with a collaborator.

Right-click the file and choose “Get Link.”

You can then choose “Copy Link” to place the link on your clipboard and paste it where you like. You can also use this box to share the link by entering your contact’s email address.

At the bottom of the window, use the General Access section to control who can open the file with the link. You can pick “Restricted” to only allow access to those you share with or “Anyone With Link” to let anybody who clicks the link open the file.

Work With Microsoft Office Files

You don’t have to own Microsoft Office to work with Office files if you have Google Drive. You might receive a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file that you need to view or edit. You can open these files in the corresponding Google app, Docs, Sheets, or Slides.

RELATED: How to Download Files and Folders From Google Drive

Additionally, you can download Docs, Sheets, and Slides documents in Microsoft Office formats.

To open an Office document, upload it to Google Drive like any other file. Then either double-click or right-click, move to Open With, and pick from Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.

When the file opens in the corresponding app, you’ll see the file format retained at the top. Your changes save automatically, and you can then download the file in its original Office format.

If you have a Docs, Sheets, or Slides file that you want to export and save in the Office format, this is just as easy. Open the document and go to the File tab. Move to Download and pick the format in the pop-out menu.

Manage File Versions

Similar to obtaining a link to your file without opening it, you can manage its versions. This feature works with PDF and Microsoft Office files as well as images.

Right-click the file and choose “Manage Versions.”

You’ll then see a pop-up window with each version of the file, including the current version.

As you can see at the top of the window, older version may be deleted after 30 days or 100 stored versions. If you want to avoid losing a previous version, click the three dots to the right of it and pick “Keep Forever.”

If you have a newer version saved to your device that you want to use, select “Upload New Version.” Then, browse for the file and pick “Upload.”

Two more actions you can take are to delete or download any of the versions you see. Use the three dots to the right of the version to pick “Delete” or “Download.”

View a File’s Activity, Details, and Description

While it may seem like such a simple thing, being able to view the activity and details for a file might be exactly what you need to do. Additionally, you can take advantage of the descriptions in Google Drive to add your own details.

RELATED: How to Change the Owner of a File in Google Drive

Open the details sidebar one of these ways:

  • Right-click the file and pick “View Details.”
  • Select the file and click the View Details icon (small letter “i”) on the top right.
  • Select the file, click the three dots at the top, and pick “View Details.”

You’ll then see the sidebar with two tabs for Details and Activity. With Details you can review the file type, size, owner, date created, and more. With Activity, you’ll see things like when the file was uploaded or when it was edited.

To add a description to the file, use the Details tab in the sidebar. Enter your text into the Description box at the bottom and hit Enter or Return. This is a good way to distinguish between files with similar names.

Add Comments to Files

Another convenient Google Drive feature is the ability to add comments to files. This is useful for notes for yourself or collaborators.

Open the file in Preview mode. You can do this by selecting the file and click the Preview icon (eye) at the top or right-clicking and choosing “Preview.”

Select the portion of the file you want to comment on and then select the Comment icon on the right or at the top.

Type your comment in the box that appears and click “Comment.”

Notice you can use the @ (At) symbol to mention a collaborator if you like. As a bonus, you have the ability to assign your comment to that person. Check the Assign To box and click “Assign.”

Upload Files With Your Mobile Device Camera

If you use the Google Drive mobile app, you have an additional feature that can make uploads easy. You can use your device camera to capture a file or other item and upload it as a PDF (Android) or an image (iPhone.)

RELATED: How to Upload Files and Folders to Google Drive

On Android

Open the Android Google Drive app and tap the plus sign to upload a file. Then, pick “Scan.”

Tap the shutter button to scan the item and then use the checkmark to save it. You can pick the trash can icon to recapture the scan if necessary. Select “Save.”

Choose the location to save it within Google Drive and then tap “Save” again. You’ll then see your scanned file as a PDF.

On iPhone

Open the iPhone Google Drive app and tap the plus sign to upload a file. Then, pick “Use Camera.”

Tap the shutter button to capture the image select tap “Use Photo” to upload it. You can also pick “Retake” to recapture the shot if needed.

After a few moments, you’ll see your image in Google Drive.

Sometimes features are obvious, especially if they’re ones you use often. But then there are others you don’t realize exist and would find super helpful. Hopefully at least one of these Google Drive features is useful to you.

Someone turned the Galaxy Z Fold 4 into a Windows Phone and it’s pretty awesome

What you need to know

  • A YouTuber managed to turn his Galaxy Z Fold 4 into a Windows Phone.
  • He used a combination of two Android launchers and Bixby Routines to make it work.
  • The process isn’t perfect, but it appears to work surprisingly well, considering.

Samsung’s latest foldables smartphones are finally available, and while they’ve only just hit store shelves, some users are finding some exciting ways to customize their experience. For example, one Galaxy Z Fold 4 owner has managed to transform his device into a Windows Phone.

YouTuber Mark Spurrell takes us through the process of getting his new Galaxy Z Fold 4 to look like a Windows Phone on the outside and a full Windows PC on the inner display. It may seem like a complicated process, but according to Spurrell, it requires just two Android launchers and tweaking some Bixby Routines to turn one of the best foldable phones into a blast from the past.

The result is a folding phone that features the all-too-familiar Windows Phone tiles when closed. They’re fairly customizable, as Spurrell demonstrates, moving and resizing tiles and even changing icons to match what you’d normally see on a Windows Phone. Spurrell is even able to customize useful gestures for quick access to functions like the camera.

On the inside, the experience is completely different. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 opens to w Windows 10-like desktop, complete with shortcuts and a start menu that lists all your apps. On the bottom left corner is where you’ll find widgets for the clock and calendar, a collapsable quick settings shortcut, and a full panel for settings and notifications that effectively replaces the pull-down notification shade.

Spurrell notes that the process isn’t perfect, particularly due to the phone constantly switching between launchers. However, he says it’s not as wonky as he expected it would be, and overall he’s pretty impressed with the experience.

You can check out the full video above to find out how he turned his Galaxy Z Fold 4 into a Windows Phone and relive the good ol’ days. Who knows, maybe Microsoft will be inspired for its Surface Duo 2 successor. Or not.

Meanwhile, you can check out some awesome Galaxy Z Fold 4 deals in case you’re interested in buying Samsung’s latest foldable smartphone.

Random: Masahiro Sakurai Updated His Awesome Gaming Setup, Here’s A Look

When he’s not making huge games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, video game director Masahiro Sakurai is actually playing them. Yes, as you’ve likely already seen before, he’s got an extensive collection of consoles and games (new and old).

In a new post on social media, it seems Sakurai has updated his gaming space. As you can see, all the consoles are neatly ordered – with the Switch on the second shelf, and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on top. One thing a lot of his fans also noticed is that the Switch dock is placed on its side.

We’re not too sure about the close proximity of the PlayStation and Xbox, either – but to be fair he’s running an open roof at the very top. Here’s a rough translation of what he had to say about his new setup, courtesy of Google translate:

“I had a made-to-order game machine shelf made. For waste heat, the top plate and the back are removed. When playing, the door is left open. The wiring is passed straight through the hole in the center behind the shelf board. The bottom 2 rows are for controllers and such. The power supply on the back can be turned off individually.”

Update: Sakurai has shared a few other images, noting how he got two of these shelves. And in addition to this, another tweet discusses the Switch on its side. He says it’s not recommended by the manufacturer. Here’s exactly what he had to say:

“There are two of these game shelves…For living room and private room (work room). This door is opaque.”

“There was a reaction to the Switch dock horizontal placement …It’s not recommended by the manufacturer, so do it at your own risk. This is just my personal experience, but I had no problems using it until I cleared Xenoblade Chronicles 3.”

In recent months, Sakurai has also shown off his personal game library – featuring all sorts of retro titles:

What do you think of Sakurai’s new setup? How about the sideways Switch dock? Leave a comment below.

Something Awesome Happens When You Use Banana Peel as an Ingredient : ScienceAlert

Every time you peel a banana and dispose of the skin, you’re throwing away a tasty, nutritious snack.

A recent study has shown if banana peels are blanched, dried, and ground into a flour, they can be turned into baked goods that taste just as nice, if not better than wheat-based products.

Unless you’re a devoted reader of vegan cooking blogs or a Nigella Lawson fan, you’ve probably never considered cooking with a banana peel. But not only is it perfectly safe, but scientists also demonstrated it really is good for you.

When their experiments products were taste-tested, consumers reported they were just as happy with the flavors as they were with peel-free sugar cookies.

You’ll even get a generous helping of minerals and cancer-fighting nutrients. Enriched with banana peels, for instance, the sugar cookies made in the study contained much more fiber, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidant compounds.

On the downside, adding too much banana peel flour did result in cookies that were somewhat brown and hard, possibly from all the extra fiber. But when batches were made with flour containing 7.5 percent banana peel, the texture of the cookies hit a far more appealing balance.

As a bonus, the goods also kept well on the shell for three months at room temperature.

While the study only looked at the consequences of adding banana peels to baked cookies, the results suggest using banana peel flour in breads, cakes, and pasta might also be worth considering.

Last year, for instance, a study on banana peel cake found the yellow skin of the fruit provides a natural food color to the baked product as well as a nutritional boost.

A 2016 study, meanwhile, found that substituting up to 10 percent of wheat flour with banana peel flour can enrich baked bread with higher protein, carbohydrate, and fat contents.

Not into baking? Nigella Lawson has used banana peels in curry, and vegan bloggers have recently popularized the idea of banana peel bacon and pulled peel ‘pork’.

Eating the skin of this fruit isn’t just a healthy option, it can help reduce food waste. Around 40 percent of a banana’s weight is in its peel, and most of the time, this nutrition-packed skin is simply thrown away.

Sure, banana peels are pretty useless when raw. But if they are prepared right, they can actually taste pretty darn good. They can possibly even extend the shelf life of some products as the peels have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

The same goes for other fruit peels, too, like mango skin, which was also found to boost a cake’s antioxidant properties and improve its flavor.

So the next time you strip down a banana for the fruit inside, consider keeping the skin. Your belly might thank you later.

The study was published in ACS Food Science & Technology.

Kushida hits awesome finisher in Impact main event debut

Kushida made an impressive debut in an Impact ring on Thursday’s edition of Impact Wrestling. The former champion from NJPW, ROH, and NXT strut his stuff in victory over Rich Swann with an awesome finisher.

Kushida battled Swann in the TV main event with future world title implications at stake. The winner would be positioned to angle for a world title shot after Josh Alexander defends the Impact World Championship against Alex Shelley at Emergence on Friday, August 12.

Kushida entered dressed as an homage to Marty McFly from Back to the Future.

The Time Splitter stifled Swann and taunted on a Hulk Hogan muscle shuffle.

Kushida used submissions to grind Swann and focused on weakening the wing. Swann rallied with kicks to the midsection and spine. Swann got a little payback for the earlier taunt by teasing a chop in the corner. When Kushida tensed up to receive the blow, Swann punched him in the kisser instead.

Kushida stuck with his strategic gameplan for an armbar. Swann stacked up for a pin, but Kushida transitioned back for an armbar. Swann was able to roll toward the ropes for the dramatic break.

The fight raged on with back and forth attacks. Swann got the upper hand with a variety of kicks and a neckbreaker.

Swann aimed to finish with a Phoenix splash, but he missed the mark. Kushida fired up for a hip toss and dropkick. Kushida plotted for a kimura armlock, however, Swann countered for a German suplex.

The opponents dueled in the corner. Swann leaped for a hurricanrana to Kushida off the turnbuckles. Swann was slow to climb for a high-flying attack, so Kushida sprang up for a handspring kick. That blow dazed Swann long enough for Kushida to work for a kimura on the turnbuckles. Kushida then turned it into a flipping slam. Upon impact on the mat, Kushida maintained the kimura submission to earn the win.

Damn! That kimura flipping slam, known as the Hoverboard Lock, was a badass finisher from Kushida. That’s not a new hold in his arsenal, but it was new to me in my first time watching a Kushida match. More important than executing that cool maneuver, Kushida picked up a win over a former Impact world champion. That should put him on the short list for a shot at gold.

Were you impressed by Kushida in his Impact debut match?

President Biden’s awesome video conferencing setup starts with a $7,000 Zoom gadget

President Joe Biden tweeted his Zoom rig on Friday, and it looked so good I suddenly needed to know everything about it. The tweet wasn’t about his video gear, of course; it was to pat himself on the back for falling gas prices. But I don’t want to talk about that. I also don’t want to talk about the chart next to the screen, which was obviously placed there just for this photo and is deeply hilarious. I want to talk about the big easel-looking Zoom rig in front of Biden, as he sits at a desk at the White House residence.

It makes sense that politicians would have the best video chat gear, right? Nobody has more to gain from looking good on video, and nobody has more to lose from a dropped call, low-res cameras, or that thing where you can only hear half the words they say and you end up making Bitcoin the official currency of the United States. Zoom diplomacy is the name of the game these days, and you have to bring your best game. Plus, high-level government officials have been doing video calls around the world for many years. They know how this works.

I’m pretty sure Biden is looking at a Neat Board, which is made by a Norwegian company that’s only a couple of years old. The board is a dedicated video and collaboration gadget with a 65-inch 4K screen, an integrated touchscreen and whiteboard tool, and a 12-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom. It’s a lot like Google’s Jamboard or Microsoft’s Surface Hub, and Neat’s gear works with both Teams and Zoom. (This one’s on Zoom, it appears, as the White House has been using Zoom for Government for a while.) The whole rig in front of Biden is about six feet tall and weighs about 125 pounds. It also costs $7,280 as he has it configured — though he doesn’t appear to be using the $760 Scheduling Display or the $760 Controller, so he’s exercising some fiscal responsibility there.

The White House must like the device because it’s been in use in the Oval Office since right after Biden’s inauguration, rolling and swiveling to either face the couch in the office or Biden at the Resolute Desk. Neat confirmed at the time that it was in fact a Neat Board, though the company seemed surprised to see its product in the Oval Office. (The company hasn’t responded to my request for comment.) The whole setup is impressive, with Biden looking comfortable at his desk and with the camera an ideal distance away so he looks engaged but the participants aren’t staring up his nose.

I do have a couple of notes, though, Mr. President, if I may. For one thing, you really need a mic on your desk: you’re a long way away from the microphone, and I know Zoom and its partners have gotten better at isolating audio, but you’re still going to sound like you’re shouting from the other side of a football field. Maybe replace one of those two desk phones with a dedicated Zoom mic? (Or just build one right into the desk, and into the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. I’m sure Rutherford B. Hayes wouldn’t mind.) Also, bring a couple more things into your background, so it’s not just a flat-looking wall behind you. Maybe a plant or, I don’t know, those enormous flags that usually sit right behind you. And while I’m being picky, I might clean up the desk a little. Or at least put your coffee cup on a coaster.

President Biden brings his video chat A-game to meetings with tech CEOs, too.

There are video conferencing rigs of all sorts around the White House these days. For the most official and highest stakes moments, Biden seems to prefer to set up a high-end camera and feed that into Zoom, much like he’s giving a standard TV broadcast. But, in the Roosevelt Room, there’s a pretty standard camera above a TV conferencing rig, and Biden seems to always sit at the head of the table facing it. (Also, there are mics on the table!) The Situation Room has a dedicated setup, and there’s a camera and a Sharp TV built into the wall at Camp David as well. If this whole “democracy” thing doesn’t work out, the White House would make a terrific WeWork.

I tried to figure out how Biden’s setup compared to former President Donald Trump’s, mostly to no avail. Pre-pandemic, Trump did video conferences from a hulking rig in Mar-a-Lago, but during the pandemic… I can’t find much. Trump did plenty of video conferencing, including from the Oval Office, but there’s much less evidence of what he used. Looking at how he looks in various videos and Zoom grids, though, it certainly looks like he favors the fancy camera approach. And it appears he preferred regular phone calls anyway.

Former President Trump did plenty of Zoom calls while he was president, too.
Image: Trump White House Archive/Flickr

For a more achievable presidential Zoom rig, I might recommend former President Barack Obama’s setup: an iPad on a stand. In a recent video, you can see Obama video chatting from his desk with an iPad Pro on an adjustable desk stand. I can’t say with total certainty, but I think it’s the Lisen Tablet Stand, which you can get for $24 on Amazon. It’s not quite as nice a setup as Biden’s, and we here at The Verge continue to have mixed feelings about Center Stage on the iPad, but it’s still definitely better than your laptop.

Oh, and here’s the most important lesson you can learn from presidential Zoom behavior: turn off your self view. In practically every video conference I could find, Biden’s own feed wasn’t on the screen. It’s good for your mental health, it’s good for your focus, and it’s just better than staring at yourself all day. None of us need to see more of our own face, even when we’re president.

Simone Giertz will sell you a terrible jigsaw puzzle but not her awesome Tesla truck

Swedish inventor and YouTuber Simone Giertz (aka the “queen of shitty robots”) has revealed her latest creation: a website named after the way her last name is pronounced, “Yetch.” Giertz’s roster of inventions includes things like a toothbrushing helmet and a gnarly vegetable chopping machine. While the website doesn’t feature the “Truckla,” a Tesla Model 3 that Giertz transformed into a pickup truck, or a Lego-built photo booth for cute puppy photos, it does feature some practical accessories and items.

While an all-white puzzle can sound like a pain, this one can be a funny pain for those who lose their puzzle pieces. Yetch’s “Incomplete White Puzzle” consists of 499 pieces out of a 500-piece puzzle, and since it is intentional, it will still cost you the full price of $38. The puzzle is described by Giertz as the “world’s worst jigsaw puzzle” in her latest YouTube video and took her a whopping 19 hours to complete.

Giertz’s “Every Day Goal Calendar” is an actual calendar, but the cool part here is that every day in the calendar is back-lit with an individual LED light to help you keep track of whatever goal you set. The calendar is available for $365 — a fitting price. The “Every Day Calendar” was a part of her first Kickstarter back in 2018, which Giertz used herself to keep a meditation schedule.

The website features both a Phillips-head screwdriver ring and screw ring, both for $85. It isn’t clear if one ring will fit into the other, but you won’t be completely screwing yourself if you’re missing either of them.

These items are still available on Yetch. According to the website’s about page, the site was created “after years of prototyping and one too many ‘How is this not a thing? This should be a thing.’”

String of SpaceX StarLink satellites provide awesome sight :: WRAL.com

The latest addition to the Starlink internet satellite constellation was visible Sunday night about an hour after sunset.

Beginning around 8:56 p.m., onlookers glanced to the northwestern horizon for a line of small lights, 53 in all, rising upward. They passed nearly overhead just before 9 p.m. before disappearing into the Earth’s shadow above the southeastern horizon by 9:03 p.m.

Some describe the string of lights as resembling a train, or even ducklings following a mother duck.

The satellites were over Illinois as they came into view, then followed a line that took them over Charlotte, then Myrtle Beach.

Launched from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Thursday, April 21 at 1:51 p.m., this is the latest batch of office desk sized satellites designed to provide global internet service. There are generally 6-8 Starlink satellites in our skies at any point in time. In the days following a launch, they can be seen because though dark here on the ground, sunlight is still reaching these as they orbit at about 200 miles above the Earth.

Following launch, each satellite is moved into its final orbit by raising its altitude and spreading out the flock of satellites.

The same 53 satellites will be visible Monday evening beginning at 9:13 p.m. rising from the west. But this pass will be more than five times dimmer, and more widely spaced making them more difficult to see.

By Tuesday, this batch of Starlinks will be lost from view.

Samsung’s Galaxy A33 leaks in full before its ‘Awesome’ launch

Samsung’s Galaxy A33, rumored to be the most affordable of the three devices the company will announce on March 17th, has leaked in full. Evan Blass has posted a series of renders of the phone over on Twitter, while Appuals has its specs. These include a 6.4-inch 90Hz 1080p OLED display, a 5,000mAh battery, and four rear cameras. It’ll reportedly be priced at €379 in Europe, which is roughly $417 stateside.

Reports suggest the Galaxy A33 will be announced alongside the Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A73 at Samsung’s “Awesome Galaxy A Event” this week. Samsung’s midrange A-series are some of its most popular devices around the world. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy A12 was the sixth best-selling phone in the world in 2021 according to Counterpoint Research, and was the only one of Samsung’s phones to appear in the top ten (the rest were overwhelmingly iPhones, with two Xiaomis).

According to Appuals, the Galaxy A33 will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 1280, an unannounced processor that’s rumored to have an octa-core CPU. Its cameras are thought to consist of a main 48-megapixel camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide with a 120-degree field of view, a 5-megapixel macro, a 2-megapixel portrait lens, and a 13-megapixel selfie camera. It’ll reportedly have an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, an under-display fingerprint sensor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and won’t come with a charging brick in the box.

Stepping up to the Galaxy A53, whose alleged specs were posted to Twitter earlier in the month, could get buyers a bigger 6.5-inch display with a higher 120Hz refresh rate. It’s still got the same Exynos 1280 processor as well as a quad-camera array, but the resolution of its main camera will apparently be higher at 64-megapixels, and its depth sensor will reportedly be 5-megapixels in resolution. We’re looking at a 32-megapixel selfie camera on this model, with the rest of its specs being roughly in line with the Galaxy A33.

Finally there’s the Galaxy A73. There’s less information about this model, but we’ve got some hints thanks to alleged press shots unearthed by 91Mobiles, which appear to show that the A73 will have much smaller bezels than the A53.

The Galaxy A33, A53, and A73 will join the Galaxy A03, A13 and A23 in Samsung’s midrange lineup for this year.
