Hands-On Experience of New HomePod Reveals ‘Exquisite’ Audio Quality

One of the first hands-on experiences with the new second-generation HomePod has offered new details on the latest smart speaker’s quality and performance compared to the original HomePod launched in 2018.

TechRadar‘s Lance Ulanoff had the chance to listen to the new HomePod during a listening session by Apple for members of the media and shared his experience with the speaker.

According to Ulanoff, the new HomePod handles the separation of vocals, instruments, and tracks with “excellent” precision when listening to songs like “Everybody” by Ingrid Michaelson. “What I noticed immediately is, from a single HomePod 2, the excellent separation of acoustic instruments and her voice. I could clearly pick out a tambourine, guitar, and drum kit as distinct elements in the air,” Ulanoff said.

One challenge often faced by typical speakers is that the louder the volume, the more distorted the audio can become. Ulanoff said that even with the volume at 90%, the new HomePod delivers “aural clarity” with no distortion. According to Ulanoff, the new HomePod has a sensor built into its design that can measure the internal temperature of the system and, if under ideal conditions, can “crank up the power even further.”

Like the original HomePod, the new model has spatial awareness, but with better performance thanks to advanced computational audio and improved hardware, like the S7 chip. With spatial audio, the new HomePod, either alone or in a stereo pair, can offer an immersive 360-degree listening experience.

One of the interesting things about the new HomePod 2 is its spatial awareness. As I listened to music from a single and then stereo pair of HomePod 2 devices, I noticed how the sounds often didn’t seem to be coming directly from the HomePods (thanks Spatial Audio!). Some were coming from the left, others from the right, and some (usually, but not always, vocals) from dead center. The most interesting sounds though, were the ones that almost seemed to wash over me; they were bouncing off the back wall (maybe a foot away from the HomePod 2) and then rising and, I’m guessing here, bouncing from the walls to the ceiling to my ears.

Ulanoff called a stereo pair of new HomePods “impressive,” adding that certain songs felt as if they were “coming from behind and in front of me. The sound stage was so wide and deep that it didn’t matter where I stood in the room.” It’s worth noting that first-generation HomePods can’t be used in a stereo pair with the newer model, according to Apple.

Internals of the new second-generation HomePod

Visually, the new HomePod looks a lot like the original smart speaker, but with a larger backlit touch interface and a slightly shorter design. Internally, the new model has two fewer tweeters and microphones than the original HomePod, which was likely a cost-cutting decision. The tweeters and microphones are “tilted up to avoid any audio being distorted by reflections from whatever surface the speaker is sitting on,” according to Ulanoff.

Like the original HomePod, the new speaker can quickly analyze its placement in a room to adjust the audio accordingly in just 20 seconds, thanks to a combination of the four microphones and the S7 chip. A built-in accelerometer also detects movement to allow the speaker to readjust its room analysis.

The new HomePod comes around two years after Apple discontinued its original smart speaker. The first-generation HomePod failed to be the market success Apple was hoping for, because of its high $349 price at launch and limited integration with third-party services. We’ll get a closer look at the new HomePod when media reviews are published in the days leading up to its launch on Friday, February 3.

Galaxy Buds 2 Pro 360 Audio recording software update out now

Last updated: January 17th, 2023 at 09:23 UTC+01:00

Samsung announced last week that it’s going to release a new software update for the Galaxy Bud 2 Pro that will bring 360 Degree Audio Recording. Users will be able to capture immersive sound for the video content they create using a compatible Galaxy phone.

The company had said that it would be rolling out this update progressively. We can now confirm the rollout of this update. We’ve received it on one of our devices already. It’s only a matter of time before it’s made available to all users across the globe.

Record 360 degree audio with your Galaxy Buds 2 Pro now

Samsung is rolling out firmware version R510XXU0AWA5 for the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. The changelog confirms that this new feature is included. Once your earbuds are updated, record a video using the Samsung Camera app, and your earbuds will be able to capture immersive 360 degree audio. This feature is only supported on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The devices must be running One UI 5.0. Future devices will support this feature as well.

A new “Connected device diagnostics” option has also been added through this software update. It lets you see if every feature of your Galaxy Buds is performing as it should be by letting you test each feature separately. The Samsung Members and the Galaxy Wearable app must be updated to their latest versions for this feature to work.

Samsung also announced last week that it would release an update for the Galaxy Watch that would let users zoom the camera on their connected Galaxy phone through the smartwatch. That update has also started rolling out today.

Jeff Beck Looks Back in Never-Before-Heard Interview Audio – Rolling Stone

“The only friends I had were pretty low-life,” Jeff Beck said, looking back at his childhood in newly unearthed audio of an interview with Rolling Stone’s Kory Grow. “They were one step away from jail, most of them. The guitar saved me from that.”

Beck – who died this week at the age 78 – looks back at his entire career, from the Yardbirds to the Jeff Beck Group to his fusion era and beyond in the interview, which can be heard in its entirety in the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “I’ve never made the big time,” Beck said, “and mercifully, probably. When you look around and see who has made it huge, it’s a really rotten place to be when you think about it. Maybe I’m blessed with not having had that.”

The nearly two-hour-long tribute episode also features new interviews with three guitar legends: Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, and Joe Satriani. Elsewhere in the episode, Andy Greene joins host Brian Hiatt to discuss Beck’s entire career.

“Jeff Beck probably stood out the most in terms of spontaneous, quirky, but melodic stuff,” says Campbell. “It was always surprising, like, ‘How’d he come up with that?’ Plus, he looked great!” Campbell also reveals one thing he had in common with Beck: Both of them kept guitars in their bathrooms, just in case.

“Jeff didn’t care about perfection,” says Reid. “He cared about inhabiting the space, the moment, the emotion… When he really plays with textures and just wrings all of this pathos out of the instrument, I mean, that’s extraordinary to me.”

This new AI can simulate your voice from just 3 seconds of audio

Microsoft’s new language model Vall-E is reportedly able to imitate any voice using just a three-second sample recording.

The recently released AI tool was tested on 60,000 hours of English speech data. Researchers said in a paper out of Cornell University that it could replicate the emotions and tone of a speaker.

Those findings were apparently true even when creating a recording of words that the original speaker never actually said.

“Vall-E emerges in-context learning capabilities and can be used to synthesize high-quality personalized speech with only a 3-second enrolled recording of an unseen speaker as an acoustic prompt. Experiment results show that Vall-E significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art zero-shot [text to speech] system in terms of speech naturalness and speaker similarity,” the authors wrote. “In addition, we find Vall-E could preserve the speaker’s emotion and acoustic environment of the acoustic prompt in synthesis.”

The Vall-E samples shared on GitHub are eerily similar to the speaker prompts, although they range in quality.

In one synthesized sentence from the Emotional Voices Database, Vall-E sleepily says the sentence: “We have to reduce the number of plastic bags.”

However, the research in text-to-speech AI comes with a warning.

“Since Vall-E could synthesize speech that maintains speaker identity, it may carry potential risks in misuse of the model, such as spoofing voice identification or impersonating a specific speaker,” the researchers say on that web page. “We conducted the experiments under the assumption that the user agree to be the target speaker in speech synthesis. When the model is generalized to unseen speakers in the real world, it should include a protocol to ensure that the speaker approves the use of their voice and a synthesized speech detection model.”
