Suspected Russian spy arrested by Norway attended conference on hybrid warfare

Comment

BRUSSELS — The suspected Russian spy arrested in Norway this week attended a seminar on hybrid threats recently that included a scenario about responding to a pipeline explosion, according to Norwegian media, a coordinator for the group that hosted the event, and a photograph from the event.

Norwegian security officials this week announced they had arrested a man claiming to be a Brazilian academic conducting research on Arctic issues in the city of Tromso who they believe is, in fact, a Russian “illegal.” He has been identified in news reports as José Assis Giammaria.

The arrest comes after at least seven Russians — including the son of a close associate of President Vladimir Putin’s — were detained in recent weeks for flying drones or taking pictures near sensitive areas.

Norway on edge over drone sightings, arrest of son of Putin confidant

Norway and other countries in Europe are rushing to secure critical infrastructure after the sabotage of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines. In recent months, there have been multiple drone sightings in Norway’s offshore oil and gas fields and at Norwegian airports.

The Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang first reported Thursday that the suspect attended the Sept. 29-30 seminar in Vilnius, Lithuania, on countering hybrid threats.

The seminar was hosted by EU-HYBNET, a European network on hybrid threats, which include sabotage, disinformation, cyberattacks and other means of fighting outside traditional state-to-state military conflict. The organization’s website and a conference brochure say the group is funded by the European Commission. A spokesperson for the commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Paivi Mattila, a professor at Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland who coordinates EU-HYBNET program, confirmed by phone that the suspected spy attended the event. She said he did not go through a security check but declined to comment further, citing the investigation.

An image shared on Twitter by Mykolas Romeris University, shows Giammaria seated among workshop participants at the event organized with the Lithuanian Cybercrime Center for Excellence for Training, Research and Education on Sept. 29.

A brochure for the seminar in Vilnius says participants in the event would examine different scenarios, including one case of a “gas flow shutdown after a gas pipeline explosion.” In the case study, the “initial findings support the assumption that probably it is about a sabotage and not an accident.”

E.U. warns of ‘robust’ response against sabotage after Nord Stream blasts

Information about the suspect is still emerging. Norwegian domestic security officials announced the arrest this week, saying the suspect posed “a threat to fundamental national interests.”

There is concern he “may have acquired a network and information about Norwegian politics of the northern area,” Deputy Chief Hedvig Moe of the Norwegian Police Security Service told Norwegian media. Even if information the person acquired does not directly compromise Norway’s security, it could be misused by Russia, she said.

As of Oct. 21 Giammaria was listed as a researcher at the Norwegian think tank ‘The Grey Zone’ at The Arctic University of Norway. He is no longer listed on their site.”

Before moving to Norway, the suspect lived in Canada, where he attended the University of Ottawa and the University of Calgary. While in Ottawa, he volunteered to canvas for a local political campaign, according to Global News.

In 2019, he wrote an article for the Canadian Naval Review. The article, titled “Third Base: The Case for CFB Churchill,” argues in favor of establishing a naval base in Canada’s north.

The case comes months after another suspected Russian “illegal” was arrested in the Netherlands. In that case, a suspected Russian spy claimed to be a Brazilian seeking an internship at the International Criminal Court. He had previously studied in the United States.

Man infected with monkeypox attended Daddyland Festival in Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Dallas County health department has reported its first locally transmitted case of the monkeypox virus after a man who attended the Daddyland Festival tested positive.

He traveled from out-of-state for the four-day, Fourth of July circuit party. Health officials said the man went to a Dallas hospital with a rash and was diagnosed through laboratory testing done. Given the size of the Daddyland Festival, others who attended the events could have been exposed to monkeypox and, possibly, infected.

Here’s a breakdown of the festival’s schedule:

  • Wednesday – The Round Up Saloon in Cedar Springs.
  • Thursday – Viva’s Dallas from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  • Friday – Gilley’s Dallas starting at 10 p.m.
  • Saturday – Hawaiian Falls Garland for the Pool Party, followed by the Daddyland main party at Gilley’s.
  • Sunday – Ferris Wheelers followed by the closing party at Gilley’s.

Dallas County has previously reported four monkeypox cases among county residents. All four of those cases have self-identified as gay men and reported a history of international travel.

Nationally, many monkeypox cases are occurring within sexual networks, according to health officials.

Anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, can spread monkeypox through contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, or shared items (such as clothing and bedding) that were contaminated with fluids or sores of a person with monkeypox. The virus can also spread between people through respiratory droplets typically in a close setting, such as people living in the same household or in a healthcare setting.

People who attended the Daddyland Festival parties—including men who have sex with men, people who use social media applications to find sex partners, and those who have had skin-to-skin contact with people with sores or other symptoms of monkeypox—should be aware of their risk and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.

People with monkeypox may develop symptoms such as a fever, swollen lymph nodes, and general body aches before developing a rash. Common household disinfectants can kill the monkeypox virus, according to health officials.

There are currently 20 monkeypox cases in Texas, all of whom are men.

I Attended a Coaching Session With an Elite Matchmaker After Relationship Ended

  • New York City-based matchmaker Rori Sassoon offers one-on-one coaching sessions for $500.
  • During my hour-long session with her, we discussed my previous relationships and current dating goals.
  • I didn’t feel judged for keeping my dating life casual and staying off dating apps.

When Rori Sassoon, co-founder of New York City matchmaking service Platinum Poire, offered me an hour of one-on-one dating advice and coaching, I thought, Why not?

Sassoon has been a matchmaker for nearly two decades, and her business caters to people in the 30s, 40s, and 50s who can afford a $15,000 six-month membership. Sassoon said she wanted to expand her work to include millennials and non-members too, so she launched her coaching service May 1. For $500, a client gets an hour of Sassoon’s time to discuss their dating history, current experience, and ultimate goals and how to achieve them, either in person or over

Zoom

.

After my Zoom session — where Sassoon supported my choice to stay off dating apps, and hyped up my looks, personal and professional successes, and candid demeanor — I felt more empowered to date on my own terms and with a bit more patience.

First, the matchmaker asked about my dating history

Before my session, I filled out a short questionnaire about my past relationships and dating goals.

Sassoon said she’s worked with clients who’ve never been in serious relationships, and others who’ve been married for 20 years, so the intake form helps her open those conversations and offer tailored advice.

To start, Sassoon asked me if I would characterize my previous relationship, which was almost 10 years long and ended 9 months ago, as one of the best romantic ones of my life. I said yes. We talked about how we had lived together, the qualities I liked about my ex, and the ways I wished our relationship could’ve been different.

It wasn’t pleasant rehashing the best relationship of my life, and I worried about feeling judged for having barely any regrets or critiques about the dynamic my ex and I had.

But talking to Sassoon, I felt empowered. Discussing my past felt like a research project for improving the quality of my current dating life.

She supported my decision to stay off dating apps and have casual sex

I expected Sassoon to say my current approach to dating — lots of of first dates, casual flings, and sex when I feel like it — was all wrong.

But Sassoon only asked follow-up questions to better understand my mentality and the people I’d mesh with on dates. In the end, she offered me two pieces of casual dating advice I plan to keep in mind.

1. Don’t compromise on your relationship values.

I told Sassoon I had trouble finding matches who I felt both socially and sexually attracted to, and who wanted to continue seeing me. After two matches ghosted me within a two-month span, I started to wonder if I’d been asking for too much.

But Sassoon said I’d benefit more in the long run if I stuck to my relationship values.

Now, when I notice signs a match isn’t respecting my time or isn’t transparent about their feelings, I try to take a moment to feel sad about that lost connection without assuming I did something wrong.

2. Be open to, not obsessed with, finding connections.

I also told Sassoon I was hesitant to use dating apps again, after deleting them from my phone a month prior. At the same time, I worried I wouldn’t have any opportunities to meet new people if I did.

Sassoon, whose entire business involves helping people get off apps to make connections in real life, said I shouldn’t be concerned.

Instead, she suggested I change my mindset and focus on pouring into myself. She told me to take the time and energy I used to spend on dating apps and interact with real world instead, whether I’m grabbing dinner with friends, running errands, traveling, or doing something else I love.

In Sassoon’s experience, people gravitate towards a positive and fun demeanor, and it’s easier to embody that when you’re enjoying life and trusting you’ll meet great people. She said to tow the line between “hunting” for a match and closing myself off to connection.

It felt like I was talking to a supportive and non-judgmental older sister

I left my session with Sassoon feeling grounded and sure of myself. She was like a confidante and conspirator, and it was refreshing to have an optimistic-yet-realistic conversation, especially after a few months of weariness about my prospects.

Still, I couldn’t help but think the $500 fee would be better spent on a handful of therapy sessions.

I thought about myself a year ago, when I started therapy for the first time ever, and of all the stories I internalized about myself that I had to unlearn.

I’m more sure of myself as a friend, sister, daughter, and lover because I did that work. Without therapy, I don’t think my hour with Sassoon would’ve held the same gravity.

Of course, I’ll take encouragement wherever I can get it because dating is difficult work. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the immense personal work that goes into dating, too.

Lafayette, Indiana: 2 dead, 4 injured in block party shooting attended by over 100 people, police say

More than 100 people attended the party at an apartment complex, a police news release says.

Officers responded to a report of multiple shots fired just before 4:30 a.m., the release says. A fight had occurred in one of the apartments.

“Police located numerous shell casings inside and outside of the apartment, and multiple apartments and vehicles were struck by gunfire,” the release said.

The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified those killed as Tommy Marshall, 34, and Edward Roberson, 29. Preliminary reports indicate they died “due to at least one gunshot wound to the body,” Coroner Carrie Costello said.

“It remains a fluid situation that continues to evolve with additional evidence being discovered and other people and victims being identified,” police said Sunday.
