Georgia child sex offender apprehended in Mexico after 5 years on the loose

An international fugitive and child sex offender from Georgia was arrested on Saturday in Mexico after nearly five years of evading law enforcement.

Brad A. Hatter was arrested in 2005 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, after he attempted to meet a 9-year-old girl for sexual activity. He planned the meetup after initially making contact with the potential victim online. Authorities arrested him at the meeting location.

Two years later, Hatter was convicted of attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity and was sentenced to nine years in prison.

But according to police, he stopped reporting to his probation officer, stopped registering as a sex offender, and began hiding from authorities.

The probation officers then sought assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Investigators discovered in a five-year-long search for Hatter that he fled the U.S. for the Philippines. Authorities eventually spotted him in Mexico, where he was working as a school teacher.

U.S. Marshals worked with Mexican authorities to take him into custody. He was arrested on Saturday.

Hatter was transported to Georgia on Sunday and placed into detention.

“Since 2018, Mr. Hatter has been looking over his shoulder, knowing one day Deputy United States Marshals would find him,” Thomas Brown, U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia, said in a statement.

Video shows Mike Tyson hitting passenger on plane; two unidentified subjects apprehended, then released, per police

Mike Tyson was involved in a physical altercation on an airplane Wednesday night, with an edited video obtained by TMZ Sports showing the Hall of Famer striking a passenger seated behind him.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department told ESPN on Thursday that at approximately 10:06 p.m. local time “officers were dispatched to a physical altercation onboard an airplane” at San Francisco International Airport. The department declined to identify those involved, saying it doesn’t release the names of detained individuals.

Police did say two subjects were apprehended before later being released. One person was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

“That subject provided minimal details of the incident and refused to cooperate further with the police investigation,” the officer said.

In the video obtained by TMZ Sports, a man seated behind Tyson who repeatedly had been trying to speak with him is later seen with blood on his forehead, although it wasn’t clear what happened immediately beforehand. According to TMZ, they were on board a JetBlue plane that was headed to Florida.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Tyson had an incident on a flight with an aggressive passenger who began harassing him and threw a water bottle at him while he was in his seat,” a spokesperson for Tyson told ESPN on Thursday.

The police department said it’s “aware of video that possibly captured the incident, which surfaced following the initial investigation. That video has been forwarded to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.”

Tyson, the former heavyweight champion, has been involved in multiple physical altercations in public. Among them: a 1989 incident in Los Angeles where Tyson was accused of striking a parking attendant with an open hand (charges were dropped). In 1998, Tyson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault following a car accident in Maryland. After a three-and-a-half-month jail stint, he was placed on probation.

Tyson retired from boxing in 2005 but did take part in an exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.

The 55-year-old Tyson now focuses on his cannabis line along with his podcast, “Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson.”

Suspect apprehended in fatal shooting at Greenway Plaza-area building

Police captured a man Wednesday believed responsible for killing his supervisor at a Greenway Plaza-area office building, authorities said.

The shooting happened around noon in the 10th floor of the 20 Greenway Plaza building, with the Houston Fire Department initially referring to it as an active shooter incident. Police officials said that was not the case.

Houston police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite said the man ignored other employees on the floor and fatally shot his supervisor.

“We do not believe it was random,” Satterwhite said.

Witnesses identified the suspected shooter and police apprehended him in a vehicle at his residence in the 1600 block of Fannin Street, officials said. He surrendered to authorities. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation dispatched a SWAT team to the building. For about two hours, police searched the building and the surrounding area. Some people were escorted out. Officers at one point entered the parking garage next to the Regal Edwards Greenway Grand Palace movie theater complex.

Connor Franks — who works at the building where the shooting occurred, but on a different floor from where it happened — said someone from his company came to his floor and passed along a message from law enforcement that people should stay in their suites.

He didn’t think anything was really going on. People were sitting around while they waited, huddled in the kitchen, Franks said.

“Then eventually, like probably 15 minutes had passed, nothing was happening,” he said. “So I was like, ‘It must not be super serious.’”

But when he went back to the kitchen to heat up some fish, the group was gone, he said. Another person in the kitchen told him about the SWAT presence. And then SWAT was on their floor, he said.

“And I was like, ‘Crap, now it’s getting real,’” he said.

They were split into two rooms while law enforcement secured the area, where they waited between 70 to 75 minutes, he said.

People in his room were expecting to get some kind of debriefing about it when they were let out, but that didn’t happen, according to Franks. He said he asked law enforcement on his own about it to learn more.

There was a Houston Police Department media briefing near the scene in the afternoon.

Portions of Norfolk Street, between Weslayan and Cummins Green, were also cordoned off. Drivers and pedestrians were urged to avoid the area.

Nicole Hensley and Leah Brennan contributed to this report.
