PewDiePie Announces “Big Change” to His YouTube Channel

PewDiePie has announced a big change to his YouTube channel, inspired by the likes of Corpse Husband, Dream, and a growing trend amongst popular streamers on Twitch and YouTube. After a two-week break from YouTube, the platform’s most popular content creator is back. In the build-up to his return, the king of YouTube teased a “big reveal.” Following up this tease, today, PewDiePie released a new YouTube video titled, “I’m Back With A Huge Announcement.” And as you would expect, the video is already trending and has nearly two million views. Of course, every PewDiePie upload achieves wild engagement, but this video, in particular, is garnering extra attention for the aforementioned announcement.

For those that haven’t seen the video, PewDiePie is taking a page out of the playbook of Dream, Corpse Husband, Pokimane, and other streamers and YouTubers and will now hide his identity behind an avatar. According to PewDiePie, he’s getting rid of his self-facing camera and doing the “reverse face reveal” to stay relevant.

“I’ve realized that the only way for me to stay relevant at this point… it’s necessary for me to do this,” said PewDiePie, clearly joking. “Corpse Husband… no face cam, no face reveal, massively popular. Dream… no face cam, no face reveal, massively popular.”

Right now, the YouTuber hasn’t decided on a final avatar, but for most of the video, he did use a temporary one, or more specifically, the avatar below:

For now, it remains to be seen how permanent this change will be. In the video, PewDiePie asks fans for help in finding and choosing an avatar, suggesting at the very least the avatar above won’t be around for long. Again though, it’s hard to gauge how long PewDiePie will keep this going. In the video, he’s clearly joking around and perhaps poking fun at the trend, but it also seems like he’s going to keep the avatar at least for a little while.

Tom Brokaw announces retirement after 55 years at NBC News

Legendary NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw announced his retirement on Friday, closing the curtain on his half-century-long career chronicling some of the most tumultuous times in U.S. history.

Brokaw, 80, will hang up his mic as the only anchor to have ever led all three of NBC’s primary news shows: “Nightly News,” “TODAY” and “Meet the Press.”

“During one of the most complex and consequential eras in American history, a new generation of NBC News journalists, producers and technicians is providing America with timely, insightful and critically important information, 24/7,” Brokaw said in a statement. “I could not be more proud of them.”

While Brokaw has won numerous, prestigious journalism awards, including Peabodys, Duponts, Emmys and The Edward R. Murrow Award for Lifetime Achievement in Broadcasting, he could be best known for his work documenting the sacrifices made by Americans during World War II.

His 1998 book “The Greatest Generation” profiled many of those Americans who came of age during that difficult stretch of U.S. history.

Brokaw began his NBC career in the Los Angeles bureau, where the network now runs its West Coast broadcast hub from the Brokaw News Center.

He covered future President Ronald Reagan’s first run for public office, the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and the 1968 presidential campaign won by Richard Nixon.

He moved to the nation’s capital in 1973 and worked as a NBC News White House correspondent during the Watergate scandal, which forced Nixon out of office in 1974.

Then in 1976, Brokaw co-hosted the “TODAY” show before becoming anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw” in 1983.

He led the team there for 22 years before stepping down in late 2004 to become a special correspondent for NBC. He also served as moderator of “Meet the Press” immediately after the untimely death of Tim Russert in 2008.

President Barack Obama awarded Brokaw the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in 2014.

Honor announces its first post-Huawei phone

Honor has announced the new V40 5G flagship phone, its first since Huawei sold the company off to a Shenzhen-based consortium of Chinese partners. The phone is exclusive to China for now, but Honor’s V-series usually makes its way to the rest of the world under “View” branding.

The V40 has a 6.72-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ processor. The primary camera has a 1/1.56-inch 50-megapixel sensor. The 4,000mAh battery can be charged wirelessly at 50W or at 66W with a cable.

Huawei announced that it was selling off Honor in November due to “tremendous pressure” and a difficulty in securing an adequate supply chain. While Honor was operated independently from Huawei, it relied on the parent company for much of its technology, such as HiSense’s Kirin processors. That meant it was hit just as hard by US sanctions banning US companies from doing business with Huawei.

The V40 phones will of course have been in development since earlier than November, but now that Huawei has divested itself of Honor, the international “View 40” version of the V40 may be able to ship with Google services on board. That would allow Honor to sell phones in Western markets and beyond without the huge disadvantage of having to rely on Huawei’s AppGallery, which still can’t compete with Google’s Play Store outside of China, where Google has no presence.

At the same time, Honor no longer has the advantage of relying on Huawei’s supply chain, so it’s going to have work to do in order to establish itself as a strong brand in its own right once the phones launch elsewhere. For now, it’s available in China with prices starting at 3,599 yuan (~$550) for a model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. 3,999 yuan (~$620) doubles the storage to 256GB.

Southwest Airlines announces daily flight destinations out of Santa Barbara, including Vegas

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Southwest Airlines has announced the destinations they will be flying to out of Santa Barbara Airport, including several daily flights to Las Vegas.

Southwest will begin service out of SBA on April 12, 2021. The initial schedule includes three daily departures to Las Vegas, one daily flight to Denver and one daily flight to Oakland.

“Obviously all strong markets in their own right, but they’re also major connecting points within the Southwest network,” said airport spokeswoman Deanna Zachrisson, who says Santa Barbara passengers will now have access to 50 other Southwest destinations via the new connections.

“We know we’ve been an attractive market for Southwest, but it took the shake-up of the industry as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide the impetus to enter the market,” said Airport Director Henry Thompson in a statement. “Whatever the reason, it’s our region that stands to benefit.”

Southwest’s network and notoriety for low fares and no baggage fees make it a popular airline.

“They just have such a large, loyal customer base,” Zachrisson said. “And that’s one of the reasons why we pursued them for so long.”

The airport staff and other local organizations have courted the airline for at least five years.

Tourism group Visit Santa Barbara has been actively involved in those conversations. The organization is now committing $250,000 to support the new flights, including marketing campaigns to attract visitors in each of the new Southwest destination cities.

Once leisure travel is deemed safe once again, the new airlines could help galvanize a significant rebound for Santa Barbara’s hospitality industry and broader economy overall.

“Obviously this is important for our very critical tourism industry, for meetings and conferences industry, for weddings,” said Kathy Janega-Dykes, president and CEO of Visit Santa Barbara. “The easier it is for people to get here, the more likely they are to consider a visit, and become, certainly, a repeat visitor.

“We also know that air passengers stay in the region longer than those that arrive by car or train. They also tend to spend more money in our community… And the pandemic has certainly illuminated how essential tourism is to our local community.”

Southwest flies with Boeing 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft for all its destinations and will do so out of Santa Barbara as well.

The new flights are currently bookable on Southwest’s website. Introductory fares start as low as $39 one way to Las Vegas.

Dead By Daylight Studio Hurriedly Announces Colorblind Mode After Designer Complains About Accessibility Requests

Image: Behaviour Interactive

A little over a week after a Dead by Daylight designer became publicly agitated over requests for accessibility options, developer Behaviour Interactive has announced that it is working on accommodations for colorblind players.

“This is not how we wanted to reveal this, but we feel it’s the right time,” the studio’s official Twitter account told video game accessibility advocate and advisor Steven Spohn earlier today. “We have been working on a colorblind mode for some time now and we are planning on a release shortly.”

Spohn had previously asked the developer to answer for statements made by live balance designer Ethan “Almo” Larson on his personal Twitch stream, during which he derided a viewer for “blabbing about colorblind mode all the time.”

“It’s getting really boring,” Larson said on January 12. “We’ve heard it a million times. We know. Continuing to badger us about it isn’t going to change anything. If it gets done, it’ll get done when we have time to do it or if somebody decides that it’s something that should be done. We know that a lot of players want it. We know that it’s not a small number. We get it.”

Dead by Daylight fans have long asked for a colorblind mode, as the condition can severely impact someone’s ability to play the game. According to a recent Reddit post calling for the community to boycott online play on September 6, which advocacy groups have designated as Colorblindness Awareness Day, some of the more egregious examples in the game include miniscule differences between status effect colors against the health bar and recent changes in the UI that replaced a more obvious visual indicator of character injuries with a simple red glow.

While it couldn’t provide a release date, Behaviour Interactive is hoping to add a colorblind mode to Dead by Daylight in the game’s next major update. The studio also shared examples of the work it’s done so far.

“This is not indicative of the views of the team, and we deeply apologize for any frustration or harm this may have caused,” the official Twitter account added in response to Larson’s statements.
