Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023: all the news and announcements from the event

This year’s first Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event will take place in front of an audience in San Francisco’s Masonic Auditorium, marking the first in-person event for Samsung in three years. It kicks off on Wednesday, February 1st, at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, and we’re expecting some exciting announcements.

Unlike Galaxy Unpacked events in the recent past, Samsung’s product reservation page suggests that the company’s also planning to release several new laptops instead of new earbuds or smartwatches. We could see up to five variations of its brand-new Galaxy Book 3 laptops, featuring thinner and lighter OLED panels with sensors embedded directly into the touchscreens.

If you’re looking to stay up to date on this year’s Galaxy Unpacked, The Verge will keep you posted on all the news and product announcements from the event.

Apple’s Website Suggests M2 and M2 Pro Mac Announcements Were Originally Set for Fall 2022

Information embedded within Apple’s website suggests that this week’s new Mac announcements, including the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, were initially set to be unveiled in October or November of last year.

As reported by Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber, the file name for a short mini keynote-styled video that Apple released following the announcement of the updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini includes the year 2022, suggesting the video may have been initially set to premiere last year. The video, over 18 minutes long, looks like the digital Apple events the company has been holding for the previous few years.

Some have speculated the 18-minute video was a segment cut out from a larger event the company was planning to hold in October or November 2022 that included more than the announcements of new M2 Pro and M2 Max Macs. Also spotted on Twitter, the AR files for the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were compiled in October 2022, three months before the new Macs were announced.

Typically, every fall, Apple holds an event in September to announce its latest iPhones and Apple Watch models. In the run-up to the fall of 2022, rumors were increasingly suggesting that Apple was planning to hold two events between September and December: one for the iPhone and Apple Watch and another for the Mac and iPad.

The latter event was to be focused entirely on updated Apple silicon Macs and iPads, including updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and the next-generation iPad Pro, according to rumors circulating at the time. In September, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that Apple had canceled plans to hold a second digital event in the fall and would instead release the remaining products for 2022 through press releases on its website.

In October, Apple announced an updated iPad Pro with M2 and the redesigned 10th-generation entry-level iPad via press releases. In mid-Decemeber, Gurman reported that the new Macs were now slated for a launch in “early” 2023.

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros have options for either the M2 Pro or M2 Max chip, building on the performance of the M1 Pro and M1 Max. The new chips allow for even faster performance and a higher 96GB capacity of unified memory with the M2 Max. The new Macs also now support 8K external displays thanks to a more advanced HDMI port, and the 16-inch model has the longest battery life of any Mac.

Apple this week also announced a new Mac mini, featuring the same design as the previous-generation model but now with M2 or M2 Pro. The new Mac mini and MacBook Pros are available for pre-order on Apple’s website and will begin arriving to customers on Tuesday, January 24.

Intel’s 13th-Gen Announcements Give Us 5 Clues About Future Laptops

Welcome to CES, where Intel routinely drops a boatload of new processors. Periodically, we’ll also see some important capability upgrades to go with them as well. 2023 is one of the lower-key years, and after plowing through the details surrounding all 40-plus new choices, I’ve concluded that Intel’s latest 13th-gen announcements can be pretty much summed up in five key points.

Only a few laptop CPUs promise significant speed gains

That’s because the Core i9-13980HX, i9-13950HX, i9-13900HX and i7-13850HX — the premium CPUs intended for gaming and CPU-intensive graphics (like rendering) — have double the efficient cores (E cores) to hit a total of up to 24 cores and support faster DDR5 memory than 12th-gen offerings. The rest just have tweaks and optimizations, which allow for a gentle bump in clock speeds and battery life. For Chromebooks, the Core i3 N series updates to the latest hybrid P core/E core architecture, which means you may experience notable performance improvements in higher end Chromebooks as well.

You’ll be able to overclock with any of the HX processors, which you were previously only able to do with the HK versions. All SKUs shown support CPU, GPU, and memory overclocking. Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics will also be able to take advantage of a new Endurance Gaming setting, intended to extend battery life while gaming. It does this by kicking in Intel’s XeSS upscaling and capping the frame rate at 30fps, for all your desperation gaming needs.

The company highlighted laptops from the usual suspects — Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Asus and Razer — as partners for 13th-gen HX series laptops.

You’ll likely see a quick jump to 13th-gen based offerings

The new laptop CPUs and supporting chipsets can generally drop right into the existing motherboards and have the same power and cooling requirements. It’s always a faster manufacturing switchover when companies don’t need to significantly redesign the hardware.

Intel

Desktops toddle on

Intel launched its flagship 13th-gen desktop CPUs in September, leaving the mainstream, low power (for all-in-ones and other compact desktops) and inexpensive chips for CES, as it usually does. They’re not terribly interesting, since they, too tend to be variations on last year’s theme. One bright spot is that Intel’s bringing Bluetooth LE audio to desktops via motherboards which use its Killer Wireless modules.

Evo expands beyond Intel graphics

Intel’s Evo program is its marketing imprimatur for laptops which meet specific criteria that highlights all the wunnerful things you can get when you put Intel inside. These types of programs — AMD Advantage is another — usually require that the laptops incorporate all the latest and greatest hardware the sponsoring company makes. So it’s notable that Intel now allows laptops with third-party discrete graphics (in other words, Nvidia and AMD) to qualify, in addition to its own Arc graphics. Also, with noting: Of the laptops launching at CES, I don’t remember any incorporating Intel Arc discrete graphics that I heard about prior to the show.

Previously announced features will begin to roll out

The 13th-gen Core chips support the current 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 data transfer technology, as did the 12th-gen processors, but with some improvements on the laptop processors that aren’t on the desktop equivalents. First, they support DisplayPort 2.1 video for running dual 4K monitors at 60 frames per second, and second, their USB speeds are doubled to 20Gbps. (The latest version of that technology, USB 4, will reach 80Gbps and 120Gbps in some conditions when it arrives as soon as this year.)

Other features include Intel’s Unison, which lets iPhone or Android devices send and receive texts, view and transfer photos, videos and files and more with your PC or laptop. We’ll also see the Engineered for Evo compatibility program expanding to Bluetooth mice, keyboards and Wi-Fi access points, and Intel’s addition of Bluetooth LE Audio (for better, less battery sucking headphone operation) to its Killer Wireless modules. Some laptops will also start to incorporate Intel’s Movidius vision processing unit, which Windows can use for improving videoconferencing experiences.

You can expect a lot more laptop, desktop and component PC news at CES 2023, much of it built around these Intel chip announcements.

Metal Gear Solid Producer Says 2023 Will Be ‘A Year Of Many Announcements’

Metal Gear Solid creator and Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear Solid publisher Konami parted ways with each other back in 2015 and since then, there hasn’t been a mainline entry in the famed MGS series (although there was the not-so-great Metal Gear Survive in 2018).

While there’s no reason to believe Kojima and Konami are teaming up again anytime soon, it seems the latter might be preparing for some kind of return to MGS. Longtime MGS producer Noriaki Okamura wrote in a recent issue of Famitsu that “2023 will be a year of many announcements,” as reported by Gematsu

In this special end-of-the-year issue of Famitsu, multiple Japanese developers and producers wrote quick teases about what 2023 might hold for them. It’s here where Okamura teased that 2023 will be a year of announcements for Konami Digital Entertainment. More specifically, he said “Other than [the educational edition of Momotaro Dentetsu announced last year], 2023 will be a year of many announcements,” and that his keyword for 2023 is “long-awaited,” as noted by Gematsu

Now, this could just be his way of saying that Konami, as a whole, will make some announcements and that maybe some of them will be long-awaited by fans. However, given that it’s Okamura – a longtime MGS producer – saying this, there’s reason to believe that maybe he’s teasing a return to the MGS series. Perhaps we’re getting a remake of one of the games, or maybe a new mainline entry. Only time will tell.

In the meantime, read Game Informer’s ranking of the Metal Gear Solid series.

British pound rises as finance minister brings forward policy announcements

Jeremy Hunt arrives at his home in London after he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer following the resignation of Kwasi Kwarteng. Picture date: Friday October 14, 2022.

LONDON — Sterling rose against the dollar on Monday morning after new U.K. Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt announced he would deliver parts of his medium-term fiscal plan later in the day.

The pound was up around 0.8% to $1.1259 by around 9 a.m. London time, extending gains after the statement from the U.K. Treasury. Within the hour, the currency had started to settle at $1.1170.

Yields on long-dated U.K. government bonds, known as gilts, have also fallen after an unprecedented sell-off which prompted the Bank of England to intervene and stabilize the market in the two-week period leading to Oct. 14. Yields move inversely to prices.

Yields on 10-year gilts fell 30 basis points to trade around 4.029% by 9 a.m. London time. Yields on the 5-year fell to 4.013% and 2-year gilts slipped to 3.663%.

The market moves follow a dramatic day in British politics on Friday, which included big fiscal U-turns from Prime Minister Liz Truss and the sacking of Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng. He was swiftly replaced by Hunt, who is expected to make a statement at 11 a.m. local time on Monday.

The announcements Monday would come two weeks ahead of schedule. However, the full medium-term fiscal plan is still set to be published on Oct. 31, accompanied by a forecast from the independent Office for Budget Responsibility — something that was lacking in the original mini-budget announced on Sept. 23 which roiled U.K. bond markets.

Hunt said over the weekend that his priority as finance minister is growth, much like his predecessor, but he highlighted it would be “underpinned by stability.”

“The drive on growing the economy is right – it means more people can get good jobs, new businesses can thrive and we can secure world class public services. But we went too far, too fast,” Hunt said in a statement released Saturday.

In a research note Monday morning, Kit Juckes from Société Générale said the message the U.K. government now wants to send to the markets is “nothing to see here, please go about your normal business.”

“I’m not sure it will be quite that simple, but gilt yields should fall, sterling volatility should melt away and all we’ll be left with will be recession, austerity, higher rates and a lingering sense that this sterling crisis, more than its predecessors, was homemade and avoidable,” he added.

Biden: Original plan was ‘a mistake’

The International Monetary Fund gave a damning verdict on the swathe of debt-funded tax cuts after they were first announced in late September. U.K. bonds saw a sharp sell-off and the pound hit a record low in the days afterward.

In a rare statement, the IMF said the plans laid out by the U.K. would “likely increase inequality” and it stressed it does “not recommend large and untargeted fiscal packages at this juncture.”

U.S. President Joe Biden weighed in on the British economy over the weekend, describing Truss’s now-abandoned tax cut plan as a “mistake” and expressing concern that other nations’ monetary policies could hurt the United States.

“I wasn’t the only one that thought it was a mistake,” Biden said. “I disagree with the policy, but that’s up to Great Britain.”

Biden also said it was “predictable” that Truss had to backtrack the plans. He spoke to reporters at an ice cream shop in Oregon on Saturday.

Pressure on Truss

On Friday, Truss announced a partial reversal of her so-called mini-budget, including the scrapping of a pledge to reverse a corporation tax hike. Corporation tax will now increase from 19% to 25% as originally planned by her predecessor Boris Johnson’s government.

“It is clear that parts of our mini-budget went further and faster than markets were expecting,” Truss said in a brief and hastily-arranged press conference on Friday.

Markets weren’t reassured by the move though, and the pound fell by around 1.1% against the dollar following Truss’s speech, trading at around $1.1205. Many political observers highlighted her poor performance Friday, piling yet more pressure on Truss with some lawmakers calling for her to step down, including members of her own party and leader of the opposition party, Keir Starmer.

MTV VMAs 2022: Winners announced at raucous ceremony of shock cameos and surprise announcements

Johnny Depp appears as Moonman astronaut at MTV VMAs 2022

The MTV VMAs took place Sunday 28 August at a live ceremony at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

This year’s event was hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow, with performances from Eminem and Snoop Dogg, Lizzo, K-pop group Blackpink, and Italian rock band Maneskin.

Taylor Swift announced her brand new album, Midnights, at the ceremony after making a surprise appearance.

Johnny Depp also made a (more controversial) appearance, with his head superimposed onto one of the Moon Person trophies.

As well as winning Video of the Year, Swift was spotted enthusiastically rapping along with Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ from her seat in the crowd.

And though Harry Styles was nominated for a host of awards, he failed to attend the ceremony due to performing at one of his own concerts in New York.

Bad Bunny won the coveted Artist of the Year prize, shortly after driving fans wild when he kissed one of his male backing dancers during his performance.

MTV VMAs 2022 to kick off in Newark, New Jersey

Good evening and welcome to The Independent’s liveblog for the MTV VMAs 2022.

This year’s ceremony is taking place tonight (Sunday 28 August) in Newark, New Jersey, with not one but three hosts to keep you entertained through the evening: Jack Harlow, Nicki Minaj and LL Cool J.

Organisers have also booked a number of stars for live performances, including Lizzo, K-pop group BLACKPINK, Eminem and Snoop Dogg, and Italian rock band Maneskin.

Harlow and Maneskin are slightly controversial appearances due to the fact that they both dropped out of Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK to make it to the VMAs. I guess money (and primetime TV slots) talk…

Let’s take a look at this year’s nominees, shall we?

Predictions for best-dressed at the MTV VMAs 2022

OK, who’s gonna wear what at the red carpet? I’ve seen a lot of predictions for “naked” dresses because Megan Fox wore one last year… personally I’m always excited to see what Lizzo rocks up in, plus the Maneskin lot (even if they are in my bad books for pulling out of a UK festival to attend), Rosalia, Bad Bunny (incredible style), and Billie Eilish. Nicki Minaj will probably be sporting at least three outrageous outfits.

Jack Harlow and Maneskin pull out of Reading and Leeds festivals to perform at MTV VMAs

Reading and Leeds bosses were probably quite disgruntled to learn Italian rock band Maneskin and US rapper Jack Harlow were pulling out of the festivals last minute.

Both acts were lured away by the promise of some primetime TV spots at the MTV VMAs 2022, with Harlow both performing and co-hosting with fellow rappers Nicki Minaj and LL Cool J.

“We are saddened to hear that Jack Harlow and Måneskin have decided to perform at an award show the same weekend they were confirmed to play Reading & Leeds,” festival organisers wrote in a statement posted to their Instagram Stories.

“We are working on some exciting replacements to join Arctic Monkeys, Dave, Bring Me The Horizon, The 1975, Halsey, Megan Thee Stallion, D-Block Europe, PinkPantheress, Joy Crookes, Fontaines DC, Bastille, Willow, Wolf Alice, Glass Animals, Hybrid Minds and many others at Reading & Leeds Festivals this August Bank Holiday weekend, watch this space!”

Remembering Taylor Swift’s MTV VMAs red carpet look in 2019

Remember this Versace look from Taylor Swift in 2019? I adored it (I’m such a Versace fan) – it was colourful, bold and had a perfect nod to classic power dressing.

Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J and Jack Harlow to co-host MTV VMAs 2022

This weekend’s MTV VMAs will have three hosts; rap stars LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow.

The trio will introduce and present Sunday’s (28 August) ceremony at The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and will appear alongside the evening’s performers, which include Eminem and Snoop Dogg in a first-of-its-kind appearance, as well as Lizzo, Anitta, BLACKPINK, J Balvin, Måneskin and Kane Brown.

You can find a full list of performers here.

Having multiple hosts is nothing new to the VMAs, which were first anchored by Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd in 1984. Other previous hosts include Katy Perry, Arsenio Hall, Jack Black, Russell Brand, Chris Rock and last year, Doja Cat.

LL Cool J is a three-time nominee who won in 1991 for best rap video for “Mama Said Knock You Out,” and was a recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 1997.

What will we see from Eminem and Snoop Dogg?

It has been 12 years since Eminem last performed at the VMAs, and 17 years since Snoop Dogg’s last performance at the awards ceremony.

In February, the pair joined forces with Dr Dre, Mary J Blige, and Kendrick Lamar for a star-studded Super Bowl halftime show.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, MTV has said the show will be a “first of its kind” performance of “From the D 2 The LBC” inspired by the world of the Otherside metaverse.

Otherside – an American video game developer based in Boston – describes itself as “a gamified interoperable metaverse currently under development. The game blends mechanics from massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) and web3-enabled virtual worlds.

“Think of it as a metaRPG where the players own the world, your NFTs can become playable characters, and thousands can play together in real time.”

How to watch the 2022 MTV VMAs

The MTV VMAs will take place at 8pm ET on Sunday, 28 August at New Jersey’s Prudential Center. This means that, in the UK, the ceremony will air at 1am on Monday, 29 August.

Here’s how to tune in… (I’ll be in bed, darlings, handing over to my fabulous colleagues in the US for the main event).

Madonna proves the MTV VMAs have never been short on controversy

Earlier this month, Madonna reflected on how a wardrobe malfunction early in her career – at the very first MTV Awards in 1984 – that led her manager to say her “career was over”.

The 63-year-old music icon said the moment happened when she performed her hit single “Like A Virgin”.

“I walked down these very steep stairs of a wedding cake, and I got to the bottom, and I started dancing around, and my white stiletto shoes fell off,” Madonna remembered on a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“And I was trying to do like this smooth move like dive for the shoe and make it look like it was choreography and my dressed flipped up, and my butt was showing. Can you imagine?

“Those were the days when you shouldn’t show your butt to have a career,” she quipped. “Now it’s the opposite.”

The best dressed stars at the 2022 MTV VMAs

The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards is expected to be full of iconic fashion.

This year’s red carpet begins at 6:15pm (ET) with a 90-minute MTV VMAs Pre-Show hosted by Nessa, Kevan Kenney, and celebrity correspondent Tate McRae. The red carpet livestream can be watched on MTV’s Youtube channel.

The stars have already begun to arrive on the red carpet. Lizzo, who is nominated for four awards tonight, arrived at the Prudential Center in a couture Jean Paul Gaultier gown. Meanwhile, co-hosts Jack Harlow and LL Cool J wore matching black leather looks.
