You Can’t Unsee Twitter’s ‘Useless’ But Amazing Animation Facts

Screenshot: DreamWorks / Kotaku

Each day, I walk down the path of blue-lit internet highways, through Instagram rabbit holes to nowhere, across Wikipedia pages I don’t remember why I was scanning, my face painted a clinical white by my favorite Google question, “Do I have a UTI?”

I do not have a UTI, at least not until I Google the question again tonight, but the daily fascination and shame of being an internet explorer is perhaps why a popular Twitter thread asking users to provide their best “useless” animation knowledge was deleted by its creator. But it’s hard to kill the internet bug once you got it, and people keep sharing animation knowledge that would quench even the most insatiable god’s thirst anyway. Drink up, here’s some of the best of it.

“In Toy Story, Woody was originally supposed to look concerned after he removes Buzz Lightyear’s helmet and Buzz starts choking,” one popular tweet said. “But the model of him during the scene looked bored and unamused, which was funnier so they did that instead.” Accidental sociopathy is a good message to send to children, I think.

Similarly, apparently, in “Invader Zim this walk was supposed to be menacing but when the animation team was done with this, the staff thought Peepi was dancing so they added the music.” And in The Proud Family Movie, Oscar Proud was meant to have a slow-mo running scene, but “when the animation came back from overseas, it looked like this. The crew found it funny and kept it that way.”

But I’m really thirsty—I need more useless animation facts. These eight tweets about Shrek certainly help.

Oh, OK, that’s a lot of facts. I think I’m ready to reintegrate into society now.

What are your favorite random animation facts?

Justin Roiland dropped from two more TV shows after domestic abuse charges | Animation on TV

Justin Roiland has been dropped from two more animated shows, Solar Opposites and Koala Man, after being charged with felony domestic violence against a former girlfriend, a day after he was dropped from hit series Rick and Morty.

US network Hulu announced on Wednesday that it had “ended our association with Justin Roiland”, a day after Rick and Morty distributor Adult Swim released a similar statement saying he would no longer voice the titular characters or work as showrunnner.

The 42-year-old has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial after being charged with corporal injury and false imprisonment by menace, fraud, violence or deceit in Orange County. The charges relate to a 2020 incident against an unidentified woman Roiland was living with and dating at the time.

In a statement earlier this month, Roiland’s attorney T Edward Welbourn said: “Not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the district attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence.”

All three shows will continue without his involvement.

Roiland was co-creator, executive producer and voice of the main character, Korvo, on Solar Opposites, an animated comedy about a family of aliens who crash-land in the US.

Season four had been anticipated to be released this year, but whether Korvo will be recast ahead of it airing remains to be seen.

The first season of the recently launched Koala Man, an Australian American animated comedy about a suburban dad’s superhero alter ego, was executive produced by Roiland, who also voiced a guest character.

Both Koala Man and Solar Opposites are shown on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in the UK and Australia. All were produced with Roiland’s animation studio, Justin Roiland’s Solo Vanity Card Productions.

Video game studio Squanch Games, which Roiland co-founded, also announced that Roiland had resigned from the company on 16 January, four days after the domestic abuse charges emerged. The studio’s first game, High on Life, was created by Roiland and has been a huge hit on Xbox.

“The passionate team at Squanch will keep developing games we know our fans will love while continuing to support and improve High On Life,” the studio said in a statement.

Zelda: A Link To The Past Artwork “Brought To Life” In Absolutely Stunning Animation

Image: via Twitter (Parker Simmons) / Nintendo

If you’ve ever wondered what classic game art might look like if it was brought to life, well here’s a great example. American animator Parker Simmons has transformed parts of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past SNES manual and other materials into living, breathing animations.

The results are absolutely stunning – with artwork of the Super Nintendo action-adventure from 1991 bursting to life. It’s got many Zelda fans on social media requesting an official cartoon in this style, rather than the one we actually got.

Simmons reveals the ‘Link vs Stalfos’ battle was animated in Adobe Animate, had about 110 symbols, 70 frames, and the music was taken from the “Sound and Drama” Zelda CD from the ’90s. Perhaps most surprisingly, the SFX is ripped from Dragon Quest VIII, but it fits! Note: It seems this original art was retrieved from The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts Dark Horse book released 2016/17.

Apart from the beautifully animated ‘Link vs Stalfos’ battle, Simmons showed Link exploring a dungeon and talking to a Sage:

Parker Simmons is best known as the creator of the Cartoon Network animated series, Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart. He’s also worked on OK K.O.! as a writer and in various other roles including voice work.

If you want to see some of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past artwork in its original state, there’s actually an original PDF manual you can access on Nintendo’s official website. And just remember, you can also play the SNES classic A Link to the Past via the Switch Online service. You’ll require a subscription, of course.

As for whether or not we’ll ever see something like this, who knows? With Mario now making his way to the big screen this April, perhaps there is a chance for Link to put the television cartoon series from the late ’90s behind him and write a new chapter in his screen history.

Jules Bass, a producer and director of the iconic holiday TV specials “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman,” died Tuesday at the age of 87, his publicist Jennifer Fisherman-Ruff told Entertainment Weekly. No cause of death was released.

Bass, also an animator and composer, was best known for creating stop-motion and animated TV programs in the ’60s and ’70s with his partner and ABC art director Arthur Rankin Jr. Under the company Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment f.k.a. Rankin/Bass Productions, Inc., the two developed hit holiday programs featuring the talents of Mickey Rooney, Fred Astaire and Burl Ives.

The pair’s first production, a TV series titled “The New Adventures of Pinocchio,” was released in 1960. They also produced adaptations of “The Hobbit” and “The Return of the King,” “The King Kong Show” and the original series “ThunderCats.”

But their most famous projects became holiday classics, including:

  • “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”
  • “Frosty the Snowman”
  • “The Year Without a Santa Claus”
  • “Rudolph’s Shiny New Year”
  • “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town”

These TV programs were frequently based on Christmas songs and featured cel animation that caused a visual effect to appear as if snow was falling on scenes.
